Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow -- You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering many Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the victor's cupg And he learned too late when thelnight came down How close he was to the golden crown. During our first week at sea, our pride and bravery waned into badly dissimulated fear at the very thought of the oncoming initiation. The first dingy filled with our devoted officers is launched towards Frosh Isle. Heading the frail fleet of Freshmen are Julianne Hetu, President, Vice-President, Con- stance Trudeaug Suzanne Caron, Secretaryg and Leo Mandeville, Treasurer. Having set- tled down to our regular routine, we undertook the preparation of our annual Declama- tion Contest under the guidance of Sr. St. Rollande. Suzanne Caron brought honor and pride to our class as Freshman delegate to Worcester. The Notre Dame cheering squad added a new member to its team.Claudette Dufault, vivacious and enthusiastic in lead- ing the boys to victory, was selected. The Latin wizzes participated in the annual A.P.S.L. exam. In the Spring a regional French contest was sponsored, and Gertrude Gamache achieved the highest score and won first place for CentralMassachusetts. Even the happiest days must fall into the abyss of eternity, but we all agree that our Fresh- man Year has left sweet, unforgettable memories. Reaching our second Paradise Island, Soph's Island, our second dingy is set ashore with able leaders. Julianne is once again elected to lead us on through the year. Suz- anne Caron takes on her new role as Vice-President. Our own tiny trinket,Jeanne I-Iuard is installed as Secretary, and our trustworthy companion, Susanne Ferron, is initiated as Treasurer. We were honored and delighted to have among the officers ofour student body, the C.Y.C., two of our devoted classmates. Suzanne Caron was elected historian, while Susanne Ferron, served us well as Social Chairman. Once again the school took part in the A.P,S.L, Latin awards. Margaret Giroux and Lucille Bonnette joined the roster of lively cheerleaders in encouraging participation in our intra-scholstic basketball events. As participant of the years 1960-1961 to the French Declamation Contest, N.D.H.S.se- lected Gertrude Gamache as representative in the junior division. Our Sophomore Year will be one whose memory we will long cherish, a year we are proud to have lived . . . and we HAVE lived it! But we do keep in mind what is meant by the sweetest word in the language which is LOVE , the greatest which is GOD , and the shortest which is NOW. Together they comprise our dearest and most noble duty: LOVE GOD NOW. From smiling, sophisticated Sophomores we, now forty -one' enthusiastic Juniors, set upon the sea our third dingy destined for Insulam Tres. Energetic and venturous, Robert Cournoyer guides his eager Pirates unto the search of hidden treasure. His scavengers include our efficient Suzanne Caron as Vice-Presidentg our experienced Susanne Ferron as Treasurer, and our competent Jeanne Huard as Secretary. Julianne Hetu assumed the position of Secretary of the C.Y.C. and Suzanne'Caron was elected our first Vice- President. Our cheerleading squad was enhanced by the appearance of one more of our students, Carol Boulanger. Finally, our search has ended, and we come upon a treasure chest overflowing with rubies, onyxes, emeralds, and sapphires encrusted in sparkling gold and silver -- our class rings. Bearing our newly found jewels, we anxiously return to our ship, the S.S. Notre Dame. Preparations are now being made for our annual gala event, the Junior Prom. The ship's Empress Ballroom is elaborately decorated, and the enticing couples smoothly glide along to the enchanting music of Perry Conte and his Orchestra. 78 Once again we, now mighty Seniors, steadfastly sail along following the compass of unity, good will, and cooperation. We launch our fourth and final dingy towards Last Island with Robert Coutnoyer as our staunch leader. Perry Nuckle assumes his new posi- tion as Vice-Presidentg Jeanne Huard again is elected Secretary. Paul Lataille is en- rolled as Treasurer. Following the precedence set before us, we undertook the task of initiating and welcoming the new Freshman Class. Our sole C.C.D. instructor, Anne- Lee Martin, faithfully teaches the Word of God to His Little Ones. Under the watchful supervision of Sister Marie-de-la-Redemption, the Senior Class participated in three various essay competitions. As our Student Government Day representative,CarolBoul- anger was chosen. An inspiring weekend was spent by both girls and boys at our annual retreats. Elected Captain of our Varsity Basketball' squad, Paul Lataille led us to victory in eleven of our twenty -one jousts. Suzanne Caron assumed the leadership of direction of our Student Body, assisted by Julianne Hetu as Secretary, and Paul Lataille as First Vice-President. Through rough seas we emerged, always bearing in mind our school motto, Respice stellam, Voca.Mariam. Faithful to our guiding light, Our Lady of the Seas, we keep our beacons ever alight. Our Captain, Father Choquette and his devoted crew, the Faculty, are constantly tracing upon their navigation charts the future route to success and happiness. We, shipmates under our colors of blue and white, find that our time has come. We are now expressing that same undefinable feeling that other classes have experienced before us andwill continue to experience, But, in that feeling is found the simple words that express it all: We are grateful, we will NEVER forget ! Diane Paquin, Gertrude Gamache, Priscilla Bernier. 79 Ak Ak K ' t A fi Am ,fm at X f WNV MWNVN 1? D N x X f x, X N1 Ak AL K, Seniors, our ship, S.S. Notre Dame is rounding the last buoy, and we are traveling our last mile to- gether. How quickly all those miles have passed, and with them, our joys and sorrows. We are now completing one phase of life and are standing on the threshold of another. We look back on our four years and have only fond memories of the days spent together. You, the faculty, have created an atmosphere of understanding, helpfulness, and friendliness. Your guidance and good counsels have helped us launch our souls on the sea of life. To let friendship die away by negligence and silence is certainly not wise. May we, one and all, safely alight in God's blissful shores. We are all anxiously awaiting our landing on these unknown shores -- our chosen colleges and fields of work, To we Seniors, this yearbook is priceless because it contains all the symbols of our love, our gratitude, our dreams, because it envisions four precious years in the halls of Notre Dame. Farewell, beloved Alma Mater! There's something in the parting hour Will chill the warmest heart, Yet kindred, comrades, lovers, friends, Are fated all to part . . . 80
