Bon voyage petite nacelle! Regardez toujours l'Et0ile! Soeur Sainte Anne, a.s.v. Vous partez, chers Gradues . . . Soeur Germaine-de-Jesus, a.s.v. You have no doubt been viewing in perspectlve a chal- lenging future that props up just beyond the threshold of your beloved Alma Mater. It is my greatest desire that you shall be soundly prepared to face anything it has to offerg that its opportunities shall Warrant success for allg that no obstacle shall be a stumbling stone but rather a stepping stone bringing you ever closer to God your Final End. Trust in God, count on Mary's assistance in all occasions. Above all, remember each time in life comes but once. So make the most of it. Sister Louis-du-Saint-Sacrement, a.s.v. Soeur J eanne-de-Rheims, a.s.v. l3 'Navi' Nfulvanu-A To perpetuate the memory of your four years at Notre Dame, you have edited a Year Book. The souvenirs enclosed will oft recall the joys and sorrows of arduous studies, charac- ter formation, and co-curricular activities. You will be happy and successful in your future life in as much as you give to others a needed service, a word of sympathy, a cheerful smile, or a helping hand. Such things brighten a life . . . such things may save a soul. Be loyal to your religion, to your parents, and to your Alma Mater. Congratulations! Mother Mary should be for you not only a special devotion but also and especially a NECESSITY. Yes, someone that you especially need, someone with whom you should share your sor- rows and your joys, someone who can and who wants to help you, someone you can trust at all times, someone in whom you should confide-She is your Mother, is She not? May God grant that you always remain her worthy child. Such is my prayer for you today, tomorrow, and henceforth. Sister Marie-de-Lourdes, a.s.v. Sister Madeleine-du-Divin Coeur, a.s.v. Sister Sainte-Rollande, a.s.v. I4 3 Guided by the Holy Spirit, the soul evaluates created things at their true Worth-in their relation to God. We are all instruments in His service and can be assured of His loving care even in adversity. May you always put first things first and prize the friendship of God beyond all else. Sister St. Hilda, a.s.v. As you set out on a new epoch in life, I would like to make mine Goethe's choice greeting. I Wish for you HEALTH enough to make Work a pleasure, WEALTH enough to support your needs, STRENGTH enough to battle with difficulties, GRACE enough to confess your sins and forsake them, PATIENCE enough to see some good in your neighbor, LOVE enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others, FAITH enough to make real the things of GOD, HOPE enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future. Also, to add to the excitement of the year, the planning of the prom was anxiously awaited by each member of the class. These spirited and hard working stu- dents are proudly anticipating their fourth and final stage at N .D.H.S. Sophomores Acquainted with everyone and proud of their new title, these vigorous Sophomores were more than anxious to make headway in their studies and gladly joined the great- est of the school's activities, the CYC. It seemed wonderful knowing that they were no longer the youngest at N.D.H.S. Freshmen September classes of 1959 have begun. - Freshmen, whose talents have been displayed at our Get-Acquainted Party, are cordially, welcomed at Notre Dame High. A choice of courses and subjects account for the pleasant memories that this eventful year will bring to the minds of each student in years to come. 42 'fa 'ax ,.,,, .. .fy,,'.,: . On the contrary, in accordance with the modern tendencies in historical writing, the author aims to emphasize only those factors in our class development which appeal to us as most vital from the standpoint of today, and to explain prevailing conditions and in- stitutions by showing how they came about. We have not tabulated a series of historical oc- currences under successive classroom administra- tions but have carefully selected the great phases in the development of the class and treated them in as coherent a manner as possible, considering the material with which we have to deal. The endeavor is divided into three parts: Dis- covery, Exploration, and Settlement, with an after- word in which some strictly personal opinions are hazarded regarding the probable future of the class. Discovery The discovery of the rocketship N. D. H. S. was an accident. Four stages ago, early one morning on the 9th of September, 1956, the faculty of N.D.H.S. were aimlessly strolling through the aisles, chatting about the just-ended vacation and wonder- ing whether there would be any startling changes in their courses during the coming year. Suddenly, they caught a glimpse of something new and strange. Just inside the front door, huddled together in mute embarrassment and anxiety, were 67 strangers of what became the class of 1956. To the human eye, they seemed merely a group of out- siders, well-dressed, reasonably good-looking, and badly frightened. But to the trained eyes of these dauntless and experienced explorers, these strangers seemed distinct and widely separated individuals, each possessing aptitudes and talents, deficiencies and capabilities decidedly worth finding out. Gently attempting to dispel the fears of the strangers, the faculty bade them enter and spent the next few weeks attempting to gain their con- fidence and friendship. They' succeeded, after great difficulty, in accomplishing this. The discoverers of the class of 1960 will be celebrated in history for the gentleness and courtesy they ever displayed toward these strange beings they so curiously en- countered on September 9, 1956. Exploration The discovery having been reported to the ruler of the spaceship, the news of this remarkable ac- quisition was received with marked delight and a few misgivings. The strangers were divided into small groups and assigned to the care of the dif- ferent explorers. They were given a name, Fresh- men, and became a part of N.D.H.S. They were taught many, new strange customs and manners, and were required to learn difficult lessons. At first, they often wished they had never been found, but, before a year was over, they became thoroughly at home in their new surroundings. During the first month of this year, the Fresh- men suffered much inconvenience because of their unfamiliarity with the new learning place and its traffic rules. Because of this they incurred heavy penalties, but by Thanksgiving, they had become familiar with the topography of the place and were often in the right place at the right time. They were permitted to form an organization of their own, and elected the following officers, all of whom fulfilled their duties well: President: Arthur Marquis Vice-President: James Martel Secretary: Lucille Gendreau Treasurer: Madeleine Hetu The Freshmen became interested in strange new exercises called baseball and basketball, and at- tained a slight degree of prowess in each. They suffered much agony and despair during this period because of the social functions sponsored by the CYC which the little strangers were required to attend in order to acquire poise and dignity. The little male Freshmen in particular found the Satur- day night dances torture, but the females engoyed them greatly. In time, however, these functions became festive occasions for all. ISTORY , O 1. .nj -x. . . .. . .'-I it , .. I The intellects of the little spacemen were found to vary in keenness from sponges to razors. Already some of them were showing signs of unusual abil- ity in various fields, such as oratory, as some en- tered the French Declamation Contest: singing, some joined the Elite Glee Club: and many others. At the end of the year, a terrible disaster befell the Freshmen-Final Examinations, one of the greatest storms of shooting stars ever. With the coming of the next stage they received a new name-Sophomores, and, the process was called by the fscientificj name acceleration , bet- ter known as promotion The routine of the classroom was now familiar and they found studying much easier. The social functions of this period were delight- ful. The C. Y. C. chose three of its officers from the Sophomores, among which were Muriel Faucher, Spiritual chairman: Arthur Marquis, Physical Chair- man: and Madeleine Hetu, Social Chairman. These spacemen were really getting up in the world! The class organization of the Sophomores was as follows: President: Arthur Marquis Vice-president: Muriel Faucher Secretary: Joan Huard Treasurer: James Martel This was a most distinguished body that reflected honor on N.D.H.S. To cheer those little spacemen on to victory, cheer- leaders were chosen. They, were Jane Gaumond, Suzanne Cournoyer, and Constance Cardin. In the third stage, owing to a speedyfblast off, the Sophomores became Juniors, and their promo- tion made their sense of importance increase out of all due proportion. The class organization was as follows: President: Arthur Marquis Vice-president: Madeline Hetu Secretary: Joan Huard Treasurer: James Martel Two outstanding events occurred during this third stage. First was the reception of our class ring, making us official' N.D.H.S. Juniors. The other was the Prom. With Underwater Fantasy as the theme, this Prom received very special acclaim and the Juniors were especially proud of their achievements. This was a year of hard work and the dreaded or- deal of exams was passed with few casualties. The teachers had endeared themselves to the hearts of the class, and there was a feeling of genuine friend- ship throughout N.D.H.S. And now we come to the fourth and final stage in the history of the spaceship, N.D.H.S. The Ju- niors automatically fas was their custom in many things? became Seniors. With the gaining of this title, they began to take themselves more seriously than ever before. The organization of the Senior class was note- worthy, the following list of officers being in charge: President: James Maetel Vice-president: Muriel Faucher Secretary: Joan Huard Treasurer: Lorraine Gamache For the first time in the history of N.D.H.S., a girl, Madeleine Hetu, was chosen as President of the C.Y.C. Other officers from the fourth stage were Elaine Collette and Ronald Senacal. -Among cheerleaders were Constance Cardin, Ce- cile Llvernois, and Nancy Dugas. A class song, a class will, and a class motto were adopted and used in every possible occasion. At the expiration of the fourth stage, the Seniois were positively dizzy with dignity. All this was looked upon with friendly amuse- ment by the teacher-explorers, who regarded the re- sult of their four years. They had converted a band of untamed little strangers into intelligent, cour- teous students of N.D.H.S. and had lost only the usual proportion in the process. Settlement This third and last period is rather difficult to describe. In these rapid and disturbing times, noth- ing remains settled for long, but it appears that the Seniors were urged to stay in this rocketship to which they had come four stages previously to be discovered, in which they- remained to be ex- plored and are now ready to find their settlement. They have all chosen their vocations. Among them are the lawyers, doctors, scientist, great business minds, and what-have you's of the coming years. We hope that among their number are also those who are destined to become discov- erers and explorers of other worlds-the mind, heart and the soul. It may be that we have erred on the side of re- straint in writing this history. So we take the op- portunity to say now that in our far from humble opinion the class of 1960 is the most brilliant and attractive of any class known to history and will always be remembered by the faculty of N.D.H.S. and the people of the town as that wonderful class of 1960. There's CECILE LIVERNOIS, owner and manager of S.O.S. From what I can see, there are only three girls besides the boss, working in this, huge building. LORRAINE Jet-Propelled GAMACHE 'on her IBM fIt Bugs Mel typewriter, ,JOAN Aurora Borealis HUARD taking short- hand, 500gYYQlfdS a minuteg and JOAN Moonglow BINETTE, straightening out her DO-IT-YOUR- SELF-FILING-CABINET-KIT. Cecile finally told me what S.O.SL means-Same Old'Secretaries! There, aren't too many left, so I'm off again. Maybe if I 'go in the other direction-Oops! What's happened! It's sooooo dark! Well, it must be a tun- nel! No, it's not a tunnel-it's a funnel-a gigantic funnel. I should have knownthat Powerful Vocal Chords herself, CONSTANCE CARDIN,,would be up to something. She and her cheering buddy, NANCY Falling Star DUGAS are in the process of building the most monstrous megaphone this-side of space. The purpose of this is sothat during any sports game, especially f'Craterball , the creatures of other planets -can join in to cheer those space- men! onnto victory! A My but the people up here are active! I wonder what's going on down the path, there. Isn't this something. TREES! TREES! AND MORE TREES! . . . Looks like an apple orchard. No, it can't be. There are 'both apples and oranges growing on those trees! Oh! good, here's a sign-SHIRLEY'S UAPPL-O-RANGE . You mean SHIRLEY PRO- VOST? Yes, it sounds just like her. Every recess in school, she either could be found eating an apple or an orange. Quite clever, Shirley. Now, 1et's see, where to now??? Gee, I could use an ice cold drink. Oh, here is a nice, quiet, cozy place. Wonder what it is called? Oh! NICE, QUIET, COZY, PLACE . Looks like the owner or owners have quite a sense of humor. For heaven's sake, DIANE Block-Buster POIRIER and ALICE Fire-Cracker MORIN are joint owners. And, bov, can they make a delicious glass of iced-water. Well done, girls. After a trip like this, the only cure is to visit a psychiatrist. Don't tell me!!! There's the office of a psychiatrist right across Stellar Street . I can't take too much more of this. I might just as well go in and pay him a visit. I MUST REALLY BE OUT OF MY MIND-ELAINE Slap-Happy BACHAND-a psychiatrist??? Oh, no, it's impos- sible. She very politely takes me by the collar and pulls me to the couch. She says to me: Are you tired? rundown? nervous? depressed? And before I could answer, she says, I know what the answer to your problem is. You're suffering from tired, run- down, nervous, depression! Sounds just like Elaine. So I turn around to walk out of the office, and trip over a funny looking thing. It's called a Creeper- Sweeper . What in the world????? In walks SU- ZANNE Lightning COURNOYER. She is the inventor of this weird machine. You see, Sue was the official Sweeper of classrooms in High School, so after long hours of back-breaking work, she finally decided to make things easier for herself. Now, all she has to do is sit back and watch the machine work. So, after this final ordeal, I notice that it is get- ting late. Pd better get started for earth. Into my Rumpus and off I go. What's that coming toward me-HELP!-CRASH . . . Sir!-er,--Mam!-are you all right? What a silly question!!! Who do you think it is? RICHARD Roly-Poly ROY. He lsfjust out giving a test ride to his new lavender rocket ship, the BLAH . Fine for him, but what about me? I have to get back to earth , and make a report, of my findings. Richard is very kind to me and lets me have one of his other rockets, the BLOB . ' And 'here I am--back to earth-safe and sound after a very eventful journey. I am fully satisfied to see that my classmates are all happily settled in their astral havens and rest assured that I'm doubly proud to be one of the class of '60. Can you blame me??
