Les gradues de 1956 6 Donald Coutu , 1 , 1 A deep flow of gratitude issues from our hearts for you, our Curates, as we, the Seniors, leave our dear Alma Mater. You have been friends, advisors and spiritual guardians to us. You have tended your flock with all the devotion and care that your fervent hearts contained. Father Smith, our able sports director, it is through you that we learned a sense of fair play. You have given us the ability to accept defeat and claim victory which we will carry with us as we face the future. The Scouts and altar boys never had a more devoted friend and chaplain than you, Father Landry. Our Senior girls will al- ways remember the spiritual enlightenment that you quietly but effectively provided as leader of the Senior Scout troop. And now, as we ring down the curtain on another episode of our life, we know there will always be a special spot in our hearts for you, Father Lucier. Our yearbook itself will be a frequently reread reminder of the spiritual leader whose untiring efforts made it possible. Your wise counsel will be a guiding ray which will lead us through life.. Yes, we, the Class of 1956, cannot forget the magnificent in- spiration our Curates have been for us through the years. In recog- nition and heartfelt thanksgiving we sing: Te Deum laudamus! This school year so eagerly anticipated was delayec by the flood which temporarily crippled our town. However, we soon compensated for lost time ----- intent as we were onhmaking our Junior year a very fruitful one. Qiite conscious of the need for able leaders the class elected: Armand DeGrenier, president for the third con- secutive yearg Pauline Racicot, vice-president, Omer Guay, treasurer, and Judith L'Ecuyer, secretary. Our social success we assured by re-electing the social committee composed of Richard Giguerre, chairman and his assistants: Gloria Proulx, Donald Charpentier, and Lorraine Brunelle. Richard and his staff have meticulously executed their responsibility of making our monthly dances a success. The sorrow of losing some of our classmates was counterbalanced by the joy of receiving into our ranks three new members: Edwina Tardif and Raymond Cyr from Van Buren, Maine and Paul Trahan of Worcester, who returns to us after a six year's absence. Our pride surged high on learning that Armand DeGrenier was also elected president of our Catholic Youth Council with Norman Ledoux another member of our class as vice- president. In other school activities we find John Depres and Ronald Richard playing for our var- sity basketball team, while Pauline Racicot and Edwina Tardif are enthusiastic cheerleaders of N.D. The classical course students work intently at their individual science project for the School Science Fair, while the commercial students are diligently practicing in order to merit certificates of accomplishment and efficiency. As the days rolled into November, the Bishop Wright Declamation contest found our class well represented by Omer Guay and Gloria Dumas. Omer Guay was also awarded second place in the semi-finals of a French Declamation Contest. December claimed our class members for an active part in a concert and play in honor of Sister Pierre-d'Avila, our kind superior. With January came the moment long awaited by any high schooler--the ordering of our class rings. Quite special do we consider ourselves as we admire its blue spinel ceramic stone. Delivery was promised for March. Extensive plans for the Senior Prom are now under way and we hope that it will be a tribute to our upper- classmen. If our predictions are accurate the final months of this school year will be as fruit- ful to us as the first have been. To Sister Marie-de-la-Reparation, our devoted homeroom teacher, and to all the other teachers who have contributed in making this year wonderful, I wish to express heartfelt thanks in the name of the class of 57 . O o Qop Class I-lfstofug September 1955! Gaily and hopefully we embarked on the second lapse of our scholastic journey. The Usmiling Sophomoresv, though forty-six strong, were happy to welcome Rachel Cyr and Dolores Langevin in their ranks. From the very onset of the school year the classical and commercial students found themselves assigned to separate classrooms--Sister Sainte- Rollande was homeroom teacher for the Classicals and Sister Veronica for the Commercials. However, the division was just curriculum-wise--for we were still one in heart and spirit, We sailed along happily under the guidance of our devoted homeroom teachers as well as Sister Bernadette-Marie, Sister-Jeanne-de-Florence and Sister Jean-du-Cenacle. After the thrills and chills of initiation week died down, we elected officers--two sets of them! Classical course leaders were Frederic Hetu, President, Louise Beaupre, Vice-Presi- dent, Ronald Corriveau, Treasurer, Madeleine Haling, Secretary and Anne Marie May- nard, Chorist. The Commercials installed Nancy Bonnette as President, Rita Carmel, Secre- tary, James Normandin, Treasurer and Yvette Racicot, Librarian. The Hrst event of the school year, udeclamation contest found two sophies on the ranks Madeleine Haling and George Bellerose. George won semi-finals honors. In November, Madeleine Haling attended the National Convention of the CYC at St. Louis, Missouri and had many an interesting tale to tell upon her return. During this same month, Anne Marie Maynard and Robert Boulanger were nominated CYCers of the month. We were proud in- deed that students from the Sophomore class should be the first to have this honor. Our class showed its true colors at the unforgetable skating party we had at Yvette Raci- cotfs camp. A grand turnout! A wonderful time! And the days sped by! Christmas, with its usual festivities, New Year's with its resolu- tions, January with its exams! Lent took on a deeper spiritual meaning as each student was spurred to greater generosity by the CYC motivation projects. Participation in the county Science Fair and in the National OGA Shorthand Contest gave great stimulation to our class work and we actually found some -days too short! With the prom but a memory, we solemnly reflected, as we pressed the soft petals of our corsage roses, that soon, very soon, we would be closing our textbooks upon the learning and happenings of our second year of high school. We are taking with us countless happy memories, and to the up-and-coming Sopho- mores we say 'fMay your second year at Notre Dame be filled with blue skies, pink clouds, and silver stars . -------Pauline Lavallee, Pauline Payant 0 F F I C E R S26 First row:Judith Bouchard, Louise Lataille, Louise Beaupre, Celine St. Germain. Four years of our lives were depending on the foundation started this cool September day in '55 With such a large number of pupils to copge with, it was to be expected that our devoted teachers, Sister St. Pierre d'Avila, Sister Rollande and Sister Bernadette Marie, should de- cide to separate us into two groups, IA and IB. This, in no way meant A was superior to B but, was solely a means of enabling the sisters to teach in an easier and better way. Sister Marie-de-la-Reparation, however, decided to die courageously and undertook teaching all fifty-two young, impetuous students in the Library of the New Notre Dame High. Our hats are off to such a teacher! We are humbly grateful also to our principal who has found time, in her busy schedule, to teach us Latin and algebra. While settling into our routine of changing classes at curious hours and learning new subjects with complicated textbooks, one thing was uppermost in our minds .............. Initiation!!! When that day arrived, fear was soon forgotten in the wholehearted enjoyment which we felt. Initiation night found us trying to follow the theme of the evening, Beat the Clock. Any freshman can admit that it was far from easy. Tricky questions like What is like a cat, acts, and does things like a cat, yet is not a cat?', were askedand few could think of a kitten', in the few seconds which was the time allowed. After all had been run ragged, we waltzed for the remaining time with Norman Lafrenais, Freshman King and Yvette Vaillancourt, Freshman Queen. Once a month our reliable social committee arranges entertainment for our Saturday night dances. Without such devoted teen-agers our dances would be far from what they are ..........fun! Today, we are freshmen, tomorrow, we'll be seniors. Faithful to our motto, Laborare est Oraref' we will make our four years of work at Notre Dame High travel along the high- way of a quartet of worship. We hope to meet milestones of happiness, fun, success and, best of all, contentment along the N.D.H. four-lane highway. In fact, although it is taught formally as a subject, it permeates every subject. How often does it not guide us in evaluating literature in terms of morality. By its light, science is studied with an eye on the Creator of our marvelous universe. . .and so on throughout the day. From day to day, religious instructions have increased our everlasting love for God and neighbor. We profit of this last opportunity to thank you, devoted Sisters-bearers of truth-and we pray that Christ may shower you with his many blessings in return for your tireless devotion. Mariette Bellerose SCIENCES Sciences are like narrow paths leading to a broad highway of success. As we went through our high school at dear old N.D., we traveled these complicated paths to our final goal. Our first path was Biology under the expert leadership of Sister Elizabeth-de-Hongrie who first introduced us to our sciences in our Sophomore year. Then came Geometry with its difficult angles, triangles, and rules. As Juniors we traveled a more difficult and capable path, Chemistry. This year, our teacher was the very reliable Sister Jeanne-de-Florence who did her utmost to teach us this subject. Algebra came also, Sister Eustelle-de-L'Eucharistie with her almost unlimited knowledge of Math guided us easily along this footway. Cur senior year brought us to our final path and to the edge of our golden highwayv with the most interesting subject ever, Physics, with all its puzzling laws and formulas. After four years of hard study we hope we are ready to put forth our feet on that long desired road to happiness and success. We will always be grateful to our dear teachers for the tremendous help they've given us. In the name of the Senior Class, I wish to thank all my teachers for the trouble and sacrifices they have had in helping us acquire the necessary knowledge for securing ourselves a happy and prosperous future. May God grant them many fruitful future years. Alfred Hevey 31 LANGUAGES Learning to express ourselves correctly is English and in French is one of the important achievements of our language program. The concern of the English Department for good English, oral or written, is evidenced by the many opportunities offered us in both fields. Oral talks, panel discussions, grammar, composition and literature are some of the means of attaining this goal. We are also proud to strive toward the mastery of our mother tongue, French. Very fortunate are we indeed, to keep aglow the precious heritage of our ancestors by the tireless work of competent French teachers throughout Grammar School and High School. Latin is another language on our curriculum. It may be a dead languagei' but we rea- lize its importance. Latin roots are a splendid help toward the increasing of our English and French vocabularies. Since it is the language of the Roman Catholic Liturgy, a better under- standing of Latin leads to a more complete participation in religious ceremonies and liturgi- cal prayers. True, our language assignments seemed, at times, a gigantic task, but today we are glad to have had these opportunities for personal enrichments and a guarantee for success in our future careers. Pauline Picard HISTORY History repeats itself!!! Ancient and American History which we have learned in our school years will enable us to understand the problems of the past and to cope with present- day situations. Through these courses, we have learned of the God-given freedoms by which we possess the freedom of speech, of press, of religion and the blessing of the absence of fear. All this, our teachers have transmitted to us by their constant efforts and patriotic enthu- siasm. They have taught us to live by our American creed, to be loyal citizens of our beloved United States of America. BUSINESS EDUCATION What an emotional event! It was now time to climb the ladder of business education. The Busy Bees, 'fShooting Stars,', Little Greggs, and the Swing Alongs were rushing up, step by step. First step was shorthand. Our Million dollar swing was mastered after rnuch effort and our chicken tracks certainly improved a great deal. Climbing to the sec- ond rung, we found typing to be a pleasant experience. Under the masterful eyes of our teachers, speed and accuracy were acquired in a short time. Our third step was bookkeeping. Watch the game! was the maxim and we learned the art of Double Entry Bookkeeping. Advancing another rung, we now reached filing. Changing our motto to Keep your eye on the ballf' we experienced little difficulty in wading through the science of filing. We are now at the peak of the ladder, learning comptometry, finally. The tapping of keys at such a speed seemed impossible. But through practice and effort, we succeeded in becoming com- petent operators of this machine. We now are at the end of our high school days. Reaching the summit of our ladder, we, the Seniors of 1956, wish to express our heartful gratitude to all our devoted teachers who have guided us so efficiently through a difficult period of our high school days. Winter, once again, ushered in the basketball season. Six players, full of pep and vigor, turned out for the team with high spirits, thirsting for a better record. At the half mark ofa schedule of 17 games, we had a record of three wins and five losses. Our loss of several games and an inferior record of wins this year never so much as dampened our school spirit, courage and enthusiasm. Our boys played hard and strove to obtain victory. Fred MAI Hevey and Paul Hoppy Proulx, co-captains, did some terrific ball playing. Other members of the team sparkle in this dive for success. Through the magnificent coaching and patience of Greg Decataldi, the boys presented a- nother enjoyable basketball season to our school. With the excellent coaching of Missjeannine Blanchet and Mr. Edward Julien, we are striving towards our goal through splendid teamwork. Although we lost our opening game against Woodstock Academy, we were victorious in our return game. We wish to remember forever the worthwhile lessons acquired in training: cooperation, good sportsmanship, and the acceptance of ups and downs with a smile. Beautifully gowned in choral robes of royal blue enhanced with white stoles, the group stood out impressively on a stage daintily adorned with apple-blossoms. The audience listened, rapt in appreciative admiration, as the glee clubbers smoothly and easily fol- lowed the graceful directions of our maestros Sylvia Gregoire and Donald St.Jean. Our thanks and admiration for tireless devotion go to Sr. Marie-de-Montfort and Sr. Eustelle-de-l'Eucha- r1st1e. Led by our very able chaplain, Father Lucier, and our devoted advisor, Sister Veronica, who gave us the push we needed by her unceasing helping-hand and the willing sacrifice of her precious time, our coun- cil can look back upon a happy, fruitful year. With our ultimate goal, eternal salvation, in view we travelled along guided by the illuminating motto: Unity, Sanctity, Actionll' The spiritual, cultural, social and physical development of the in- dividual youth is the primary purpose of the C.Y.C. We, the Seniors of 1956, thank God and wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our dear sisters for their great contribution to the growth and benefit of our council. For all the privileges of our membership in this youth movement we say: More power to the Catholic Youth Council of Notre Dame High Schoolf, Diane Phoenix SOCIAL COMMITTEE A well-balanced education necessarily includes the 'fsocial graces. Though our school is a rela- tively small one, Notre Dame can boast of a well- organized social committee that keeps the younger set a la page socially speaking. Jeanne Boudreau, the able and devoted gen- eral chairman, assisted by seventeen responsible members, has greatly contributed to the success of our weekly get-togethers. We love these friendly gatherings and all Notre Damers look forward to Saturday night. Under the protective guidance of Our Blessed Mother and vigilant chaperones, Notre Dame's teeners and their friends are always assured ofa good good time. On our way up to God the Almighty, we visited four planets, the first of which was called Freshman.,' Little knowing what would become of us or where we were headed for, 44 happy space- travelers' boarded the rocket-ship Notre Dame? Having been prepared with years of experience and loaded with an abundant supply of knowledge and friendship, the f'Notre Dame received us joyfully. This welcome became official the day of our initiation. The Seniors of 52', kept us busy and bubbling over with laughter and fun. Finding ourselves safe and sound the next week, we buckled down to business. We were well pleased to meet our space pilotsn for this year, Sister Louis-Hector and Sister Bernadette-Marie. With their patience and intellectual leadership we zoomed through Latin and algebra with flying colors. We were very pleased to welcome to our new school Sister Marie-de-la-Purification, the present Mother Superior of the Sisters of the Assumption. It was a great sorrow for us to see that Sister Eustelle-de-l'Eucharistie had to leave us for a while. But this sorrow was diminshed by the joy we received from her substitute Sister Ste. Blance. We know that it was no easy task for her to come to us during mid-year exams, and we deeply appreciate the way she handled the situation. We were proud of Robert Proulx, our delegate on Good Government Day. Sister Jeanne-de-Florence directed a Science Fair in March in which all our budding biologists, chemists, and physicists took part. That was truly a timely application of our years of laboratory knowledge. As graduation, our landing-station, approaches we thank God and His Heavenly Mother for the protection they bestowed upon us. We also thank His assistants: pastors, curates, and teachers who guided us and kept us on the right orbit. Since I have now become an ffofficalu tax collector Qbadge and allj and April 15 is now approaching I must go out, and collect taxes. Lets see, where shall I start? I know!!! I haven't seen my dear old classmates in ages. Why not visit and collect Cof coursej at the same time. My mind made up, I immediately leave my office, and am about to cross the street, to my car, when an ambulance uscreamsn by, and practically knocks me off my feet. While trying to gather my senses, I notice that my old friend Lorraine, now an R.N. is the driver, no less. Well, she always did want to get a-headn, and she almost got mine that time. My car, starts with no trouble at all for a change and I proceed down the street. Suddenly a large billboard catches my eye, 'Torget about Betty Crocker, and think about Jeanne F reniere's ready-mixed foods. They're better for your tummy. So that,s how Jeanne made out. Pretty good. --------Continuing on my search, I notice that I am running out of gas, but quick! I pull into the first gas station I see and what do you know! It's Renee Cthey call her greasy pants nowj coming to wait on me. After filling up the tank with her new f'Knock and Stall Itu gas, I roll along at high speed. Say, look at that jet! Hey, its slowing down. It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Fred Hevey, and there's Diane also, an attractive stewardess for the F ly it or Junk it Airlines. Hi there, Fred! Hi, Diane! Woops they're gone again. Now, let's see, where to now??? Well! Well! Another sign, 'LIS your cranium pushing against your cerebellum? Do you sometimes feel that you are going mad? Then it's high time you paid a visit to the psychiatrist, Jeanne Boudreau. Let her solve your problems, and do all the worrying. All you have to do, is pay your bill. After riding around for a few hours, without any sign of my dear classmates, I find that I am famished. Ah, herels a nifty little restaurant. On entering, I find myself in a very congenial atmos- phere. Leave it to Charlotte and Paul. Charlotte, head waitress and sole inventor of a Hcrampy- toes easer, especially designed for tired waitresses, and Paul the head waiter, still wearing his diploma from the Public House, on his chest, greet me as usual with a sunny smile. After enjoying a very delicious meal, I once more set out on my search for the rest of the class of 56 . What have we here????? It's a sign saying, This way for a tour of the Syl-Conv Research Lab. A little recreation is welcomed after dinner, so, following the big crowd I find myself in a spacious laboratory. Why, look who,s here! It's Sylvia and Connie, two of the greatest scientists of the day. Sylvia is well-known throughout the country for her article, '4Flea Jumping, in 10 Easy Lessons. Connie is very popular for developing Flying Cupsv, to match Flying Saucers. After my visit of the lab, I resume my tax-collecting tour. Look at that crowd. I wonder what's going on? Why its Peggy, now Sister Mary Marguerite who's holding up traffic, while ushering her class of 60 kindergarten Mmonstersn. Moving along the road, I notice a huge white house, with a great sign in front, saying, Do you need a rest from married life? Does your husband treat you cruelly, on purposen? Let us, Lucille, Annette, and Beatrice, help you straighten yourself out. Try our Get Away From It All plan. It has helped millions????? Further up the highway, I see a man working on the road. Why it's Bobby Proulx, and he's been proclaimed painter of the year. He paints the white lines in the middle of the road. His in- tentions were to be an engineer, and he does engineer himself pretty well in painting the lines straight. Boy, these classmates of mine sure get around. Hmmmm'. Wonder who lives in this beautiful house. Well Illl be! Lauria lives here. She has just made over 33 million dollars for developing a new fuzzy wuzzy home permanent. No neutralizer, no curlers, no setting or resetting. It works by mental telepathy. Oh well, I suppose I should keep going. Say, isn't that Richard Patenaude and Donald Coutu marching up ahead? Why, it sure is, and they're wearing their Boy Scout uniform. Cf course, they've both been proclaimed as the two 'cDon't forget the matches boysn of the year. I suppose I should love walking. So, I'm off again. Well, what's this? Another billboard with the words, See the Flippity Flop Ice Revue, wifh our foremost ice skating queen and, Hey, I need another pillow,,' Normandin. Hmm,,this show should prove to be most interesting. But, I suppose I should get back to work again, and think about this show later. Take a look at this building! It's a school to help shorthanded students write long-hand. And it's founders are quite well-known for their '4Duz does everythingi' System. They are Profs: Con- stance Dufault, Mariette Bellerose, and Jeannine Cloutier. My but the countryside is peaceful. The trees, the valleys, the farms are beautiful. Say, that girl looks familiar. She should be, why that's Pauline. She moved out on a farm, and now raises spinach, to send to Hollywood to keep Popeye supplied year round. Well done, Pauline! As I continue along the way, I happen to turn on the radio for some music. All at once, a familiar voice which I recognize for Gerry Marand's, says, Do you eat and eat and always gain weight? Is your middle beginning to resemble a rubber tuben? Sticky-Stickum Syrup. Always a resultf, So Gerry's on the radio, eh. Well! That's news! Gosh, its getting late, and you know something? I didn't collect any money from my class- mates. Oh, well, looks like I'll have to charge them double next year. All in all though, I sure am proud of them. Wouldn't you be?? In the heart of every Senior, the book of the year is l Etoile for many joyful hours were spent in the planning and composing of this cherished souvenir of our High School days. To all the members of the Editorial Staff, who so patiently and diligently worked to- gether, a sincere thank you. But, where did we get all our material? To this question, the Seniors enthusiastically responded with compositions, ideas and pictures. Yes, it is the entire class of '56 that has made this yearbook possible. In the name of all the Seniors, I have the honor of expressing our deep gratitude to Father Lucier, our friend and advisor. Thank you Father, for helping us discover by your careful guidance and timely help that all difficulties can be mastered with a sterling will and trust in God. A grand merci to all our teachers who so devotedly helped us in the tedious work of correcting and ameliorating our editorials. Because of you, many wonderful memories will live on in our hearts forever. May each one of us, Seniors of '56, venture this one request as we bring our yearbook to a close ------- Forget-Me-Notf, Lorraine Roy 55 22 fr. -rv-. ., ' .sf iii YEARIOOKS 3 .
