PAGE REV. EDGAR A. PELLETIER ur ura ieA As we walked on through our four scholastic years - the best years of our lives - we, the Seniors, often stumbled on the way toward the pin- nacle of our efforts - graduation. It was then that we needed encourage- ment and moral support, and it was then, that, from out of the shadows of charity and humility, came a prayer, a sacrifice, a confession. As we labored through months of hard work, it was then that our minds and souls demanded spiritual nourishment - a divine manna - and always, there was a consecrated hand holding the White Host over a golden chalice as we knelt at the altar rail - humbly - to receive Holy Communion. As we marched forth through days of happiness - glorious days - when life and the world seemed so right - it was then that we knelt at the foot of the altar, uniting ourselves with our priest at the Mass - his and ours - MY LORD AND MY GOD. This is a tribute to you, Father Pelletier, Father Lucier and Father Page - our curates, our friends. To you, Father Pelletier, goes our deepest gratitude for the many improvements you have made since your arrival at Notre Dame, but mostly for the introduction of our fine athletic program. May God bless you! And to you, Father Lucier, we extend our deepest appreciation for being such a wonderful leader as chaplain of the Children of Mary. If we have grown to love our heavenly Mother so dearly, our affection is accredited to your own untiring, unselfish devotion to her. May you continue your zealous, apostolic work for many, many years to come! And to you, Father Page, there isn't much we can say because Words cannot measure the depth of gratitude that lies within our hearts. Under your guidance, We have made L'ETOILE a publication to be proud of - a book we shall cherish for the rest of our lives. If it were not for you, these pages would bear no significance, for you are truly the soul of our efforts. By means of your leadership in this endeavor, you have symbolized the strife that one must take in order to attain a lofty ideal. You have suc- ceeded in spiritualizing both our yearbook and our lives. The best we can do is this - a prayer and Thanks for everything. Dear Curates, at the moment of the Consecration at your Mass, as you lift your brow and your heart toward the Great Redeemer, remember that you are not alone, remember that the Class of '52 is there - at your side - all of us - and hear us as we lift our hearts, in adoration, with yours and say . . . We looked forward to four years of work and play- we got plenty of both. The to-tal enroll- ment was thirteen students -twelve girls and one boy. Thus, we progressed under the guidance of Sister Elizabeth- de-Hongrie. We presented our first play, entitled The Dove, on our Superior's feast. We also danced to the Blue Danube. The school, represented by the Misses Yvette Courtemanche and Claire Rob- ert, partook in the monthly meetings of the Junior Red Cross in Worcester. CHAPTER II We started our second year at high school under the supervision of our two former teachers and that of Sister Jean- du-Cenacle. The attendance was again thirteen students - ten girls and three boys. In October, we had a Halloween party in which the whole school partici- pated. Each class took part in the en- tertainment. We presented a song en- titled La Cantinieref' As the year progressed, our class de- creased, and we found ourselves with just eleven pupils, nevertheless, we had high hopes to gain new students with time. The welcome mat was out to any- one who wanted to join us. During our Sophomore year, the first annual Bishop Wright Declamation Con- test was held. Madeleine Levesque, Norman Gagnon and our own Claire Robert participated in this event. We had a winner, and Claire was the lucky one. Congratulations from all of us. Keep up the good work! 41 fkeq Another year had come to an end, and, of course, each one of us looked forward to our summer vacation, but always keeping in mind the fact of com- ing back in September to our Junior year. CHAPTER III In 1951, we resumed our classes - Juniors at last! And, one big, happy family. Our class had now increased to fif- teen students, ten girls and five boys. We, the Juniors, had the honor of starting a series of dances which are now being held weekly. We entitled our dance Harvest Moon Festival. Yvette Courtemanche and her commit- tee decorated the hall. Claire again did us honor by winning the semi-finals in the Declamation con- test. If she didn't succeed in carrying the final cup to her school, it wasn't be- cause she didn't try. And we appreciate her all the more for being such a won- derful sport about it. This year, we Juniors are all excited because we are planning the prom in honor of the Seniors. It has always been the tradition for a Senior to receive his class ring in his final year, but it took us to change this custom. We received ours this year. The emblem of our ring is a sailboat with a shining star guiding it just as Mother Mary will guide us as we sail on the sea of life. Thus ends another year at Notre Dame High. We naturally look forward to becoming Seniors, but with a little melancholy, for we know that it will be our final year at Notre Dame. Yvette Courtemanche, '53. The beginning of a new school term! The beginning of a new chapter in our life! We were Freshmen at last - mighty, mighty Freshmen! Our first year at Notre Dame was very successful both educationally and socially . . . educationally, because of the untiring and unyielding efforts of our two beloved teachers, Sr. Elizabeth- de-Hongrie and Sr. Marie-de-la-Repara- tion . . . socially, because of the great co-operation of the entire class led by the four officers: Constance Langlois, Presi- dent, Laura Bachand, Vice-President, Evelyn Bourgeois, Treasurer, and Ther- ese Fortin, Secretary. One of the various outings planned by this group was a trip to Rivier Col- lege in Nashua, N. H., where the class attended a play dramatized by the stu- dents of that college. Parties held at various times during the year also proved successful. Thus we passed our Freshman year studying and playing, guided by our fine Sisters and aided by the good priests of our parish to whom we are all most grateful. CHAPTER II Our return to classes for our Sopho- more year brought about a feeling of sophistication, we were now considered upper-classmen and we could look down on the lowly Freshmen. More subjects were available this year than in the past and they were taught by Sister Elizabeth-de-Hongrie, Sr. Marie-de-Lourdes, Sr. Marie-de-la- Reparation, and Sr. J ean-du-Cenacle. Class oflicers chosen for the year were: Constance Langlois, President, Laura Bachand, Vice-President, Evelyn Bourgeois, Treasurer, Lucille Martel, Secretary. Of the twenty-seven girls in the Freshman class, only three failed to re- turn, but their loss to the class was com- pensated somewhat by the enrollment of Daniel Yvon who for a time was the only boy in class. The close of the Holiday season brought us another enrollee in the person of Raymond Desrosiers - both of these boys have proven to be an asset to the class. The Sophomore class is credited for having sponsored the first of the dances held by the Social Committee at Notre Dame Hall. These gatherings have been most successful. The members of the Sophomore class appointed to the Social Committee were: Jeannine Blan- chet, Joan Paquin, Laura Bachand and Constance Langlois. An addition to the sporting activities was the forming of a basketball team under the direction of Father Pelletier. Both of our boys helped the team off to a good start. The Sophomore class boasts of many good singers who play an important part in the school Glee Club. We are proud to have with us Ther- ese Fortin who represented us in the semi-finals of the Bishop Wright 'Decla- mation Contest. Another fine organization showing outstanding promise is the Senior Scouts, all of whom belong to the Sophomore class. These have given much of their time to render service to the community. This fine work is being done under the leadership of Miss Yvette Lamoureux and Miss Theresa Leduc, both of Notre Dame Parish. All in all, our Sophomore year has been a year of accomplishments that hold great promise for the future. We are anxiously looking forward to the next two years of our school term for we know that they will be crowning of our efforts. Shy, demure, bashful! We knew not the meaning of these words. We were young! We were full of life! We were Freshmen! Thus began our first year at Notre Dame. The first impression we had was one that we are sure will remain with us long after we have completed our four years at the High School. The atmos- phere of friendliness, the pleasant sur- roundings and the appealing personali- ties of both the students and the sisters have caused us to think highly of the school that we will attend during our scholastic term. Our teachers for the year were Sis- ter Marie - de - la - Reparation, Sister Elizabeth-de-Hongrie, Sister Marie-de- Lourdes and Sister Gerard-Marie. Class officers were chosen and are as follows: Marie Haling, President, Claudette Ouel- lette, Vice-President, Bernard Robert, Secretary, Madeleine Cournoyer, Treas- urerg and Cecile Peloquin, Librarian. Of our class of thirty-seven pupils, many have contributed their services to Cfaaa .Hiafory the Social Committee, basketball, cheer- leading and many other organizations. Early in September, the Seniors held an initiation party in our honor. The tricks they played on us were very fun- ny but the refreshments that followed were even more fun. It was this party that played a big part in the grand school spirit that exists at Notre Dame. A Hallowe'en party was held for the whole class at Joyce Cormier's a few days before Witches Night. We all en- joyed ourselves immensely. Donald St. Jean certainly did a fine job by representing our class in the Bishop Wright Declamation Contest. Orchids to you, Donald! On March 11, seven Freshmen girls were capped at Harrington Memorial Hospital after finishing a six-lesson course in Home Nursing. The girls were: Claudette Ouellette, Marie 'Hal- ing, Pauline Courtemanche, Dolores' Racicot, Joyce Cormier, Jacqueline La- mothe and Anita Bergeron. Our dreams of a perfect year have been more than realized. And to our successors, we wish every bit of happi- ness that we have found at Notre Dame High. Marie Haling, '55 X if ' X. The team, however, dropped its first official game, a 54-28 decision to Holy Name of Jesus High School, of Worcester. The game marked the beginning of an extra-curricular athletic program planned when enrollment at the school markedly increased with the install- ment of a classical course this fall. The parish hall has been renovated to serve as a gymnasium. The installation of new showers has been another addition to the rebuilding of our gym. Rev. Edgar Pelletier is in charge of the program. Clifford Pont- briand, former Clark University player, is the team's coach. The varsity team includes Andre Poirier, Francois Trahan, Real Brunelle, Roger O,Brien, Daniel Yvon, Raymond Desrosiers, Roland Bois- vert, Lawrence Lavigueur and Arthur Rousseau. Members of the JV team are Roger Brousseau, Paul Forcier, Victor Despres, Bernard Robert and Robert Leblanc. Although the boys lost their first game, they have improved over their last appearance and their work has indicated that they'll be even stronger in future games during the years to Come. They are as follows: Genevieve Hetu, Captain: Rachel Bro- deur, Theresa Miller, Irene Guillemette, Laura Bachand, Sylvia Beaudry, Claudette Ouellette and Victor Rochon, mascot. The won and lost column for the Notre Dame squad is: four wins to seven losses. The team won its first victory from the Notre Dame Alumni by a score of 61-41 and then repeated their success by trouncing them again: 60-41. Their two other victories were against St. Mary's: 49-35, and against City Line Garage: 67-53. This game against the Webster hoopsters was the last game of the season and was held March 11, 1952. We bid farewell to the team and thank them for a wonderful year of sports and fun. We also say goodbye to our wonderful cheerleaders who have been such staunch supporters of the squad. I would like to mention here the names of Rachel and Genny who are graduates, and who are thus bequeathing their uniforms to their successors. . To the Notre Dame Basketball Team - Thank You! On December 14, 1951, the sister-part of the Notre Dame basketball family came into the world with whoops of delight and yells of cheer and satisfaction. Following a previous invitation a large group of happy girls gathered at the parish hall on the afternoon of December 14, 1951. Enthu- siasm was the keynote of that first session of basketball practice . . . appro- priate footwear was put on and baskets were made long before first instruc- tions were given. It was suggested as timely and very beneficial, and, afterwards voted upon and accepted as such, to open each basketball practice with body build- ing calisthenics. Gymnastic movements can be fun . . . are often exerting . . . make for better coordination . . . develop poise and assurance . . . and constitute a fitting entree to the following substantial meal one tackles in a real lively basketball game. Did you ever build castles in Spain and then, suddenly wake to find them there before your eyes? How did you feel? Wasn't it like a new world opening at your feet- a new world with you sitting right atop of it? Wasn't it like a star - one so distant, so far out of reach - and suddenly so very close that you could pluck it right out of the heavens and hold it in your hand . . . your very own? If you're human, you've felt this - we all have - and youlll under- stand the story that belongs to us - the Seniors of 1952. This is the narra- tive of our yearbook. There are many wonderful things about being a Senior - our class rings, our pictures, our banquet, our class trip, our prom and finally our graduation. As we walk through the portals of our Alma Mater, it is true that these remembrances will remain deeply set in our hearts and will close- ly follow us through life although they are things of the past, events that cannot be relived. However, in years to come, there is one souvenir that we can always look upon as a means of bringing back to our memories the cherished thoughts and the memorable experiences of our Senior year - our yearbook. With this conviction in mind, we entered our final year at Notre Dame, only to be met with a bitter disappointment. Ten years ago, the practice of a yearly publication was banished, and since then, though many efforts had been made, a renovation had never taken place. With a bit of sadness in our hearts, we accepted this - it was God's will. BUSINESS STAFF Seated:-Rachel Brodeur, Business Manager. Standing: KL. to RJ-Therese Poirier, Feature Editor: Irene Farland. JJ Born On a cold, dreary morning in November, Father Page walked through our doors and into our class, and he brought with him the answer to our prayers. He announced that, providing We Worked very hard, a yearbook was in our hands. Never were there nine more jubilant girls! And might I add that we were speechless - utterly speechless . . . and very, very grateful! With happy hearts and an unextinguishable ardor, we plunged head- long into the heavy task before us. Primarily, we needed a name for our book - a name that Would mean something - and We found one - L'ETOILE. We adopted as our patroness, Mary, Star of the Sea and the Morning Star, and immediately placed in her hands the hard work, the inevitable sacrifices and the numerous joys, hoping that she would hold them all in her maternal heart. If the yearbook is a success, it is be- cause of Mary's loving protection. She has been our guide and our coun- sellor. Through the able, firm hand of Father Page, she has paved the path for us and We are eternally grateful. She has truly been L'ETOlLE. And so, our dream has been realized - our hope fulfilled - our as- piration accomplished. We have seen the light of a new-born star - We have understood its meaning. And we will follow it onto Whatever path it may lead us . . . with a broader outlook upon the future and a deeper, greater sense of values. Genevieve Hetu, '52 lee Club Let us sing to the greatest glory of God!,' Is it not true that the re- joicing and singing of His children renders Him happy? It is thus that the Notre Dame Glee Club strives. Sister Saint Anne, who is also our superior, is to be credited for the organization of the Glee Club. Her great talent for singing has expressed itself on many an occasion and has rejoiced big audiences. Her experience in this field, combined with the able assistance of Sister Marie de Montfort, create for us two of the best requirements to form a Glee Club. Under their able guidance, the Notre Dame Glee Club has grown competent. The cur- rent addition of male voices provides a strong bass section. Sister Saint Anne's well-trained group has had many opportunities to show its talents. Being part of the Sunday Church Choir is one of the many privileges. From January to December, each great feast sees the Notre Dame Glee Club ready and able to render the appropriate hymns and songs at church services and ceremonies. When the beautiful month of May comes along, both Sister Superior and our dear Monsignor Lamothe are feasted in a very special way. This is where the Glee Club makes known its greatest talents. This select group has been heard on both radio stations WORC and WARE - And it has been praised repeatedly. The sincerest desire of all the members of this beloved organization is expressed thus: May the Notre Dame Glee Club continue to' prosper under Sister Saint Anne's direction for many more years to come. Irene Farland, '52 - fv ocia! Commiflee The Social Committee was organized in October of 1951 to set forth evenings and gatherings of good, clean fun. Its aim: to keep today's youth together. In the little time of its existence, our Social Committee, with Genny as General Chairman, has been quite on the ball. Evidence of this is given when one considers the great success of our Weekly dances, which have become a teen-agers' rendezvous. Teeners of Southbridge, Spencer, Web- ster, Sturbridge and Charlton, who patronize our dances, seem to go on from one Week to another with the expectation of having a grand time at Notre Damel' come Saturday night . . . and that evening is always so very charming. The Social Committee, which is comprised of seventeen members, has for some reason or other, remained more or less incognito. Here are our own candidates - and Well-chosen ones, too! Officers are: Genevieve Hetu, General Chairman . . . Claire Robert, Secretary . . . and Real Brunelle, Treas- urer. Seniors Jeannette, Rachel and Lorraine are a very valuable asset to the group. Of course, Juniors-Frank Trahan, Irene Guillemette, and Yvette Courtemanche are to be cited, also. Sophs-Laura Bachand, Joan Pa- quin, Constance Langlois, and Jeannine Blanchet are quite a la carte. Last but not least - our Freshmen - Bernard Robert, Donald St. Jean, Marie -Haling and Roland Boisvert. These are the butter on the bread! All in all, our Social Committee has been a great help to all of us in many ways. Everyone in contact with this fine group has but one toast: Hats off to you, and continue the good Work! Q if D .1 125 FRESHMAN YEAR In September, of the year 1948, fifteen eager, starry-eyed freshmen, including fourteen girls and one boy, entered Notre Dame Academy. Our teachers were Sr. Marie de la Reparation and Sr. Antoine de l'Assomp- tion. Officers elected were: President I , .. Irene Farland Vice-President .. I Therese Poirier Secretary .. . ,. ., . Rachel Brodeur Treasurer ., Norman Martin Librarian . Jeannette Rousseau In November, to our great regret, Marguerite Caplette left our class. On November 28, we had a Thanks- giving party. Memories of this party prompted us to plan a similar one in February, for Valentine's Day. This was also a huge success, and we decided to continue having them every so often. We went to a closed retreat in Marl- boro for a few days. It certainly did us all a lot of good. We had the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin during the month of May. Lu- cille Pleau, a junior, was the lucky queen. SOPHOMORE YEAR For the second time, we lost another student, Norman Martin, and We re- mained, what we dared call the lucky thirteen. However, the departure of Sr. An- toine and Sr. Francis somewhat dam- pened our spirits. But as each sorrow must have its share of joy, the arrival of Sr. Helene-du-Crucifix and Sr. Eliza- beth de Hongrie consoled us greatly. Officers elected Were: President Rachel Brodeur Vice-President I Therese Poirier Secretary . Irene Farland Treasurer Lucille Vallee Librarian Regina Lussier Joy of all joys! For once, instead of losing a member, we gained one. And we were all very glad to welcome into our class, Bernadette Blinn, who has been with us ever since! Since we could faintly recall what it was to be a freshman, we decided to give our successors a party. We found out that it was a wonderful way of get- ting acquainted and we all enjoyed our- selves immensely. Therese Miller was elected freshman queen and she re- ceived a gift. After, we all had lunch and played games. Senior In December, we lost another class- mate, Jacqueline Labarre, and in Janu- ary, two more - Dorothy Giroux and Anne-Marie Fournier. At the Coronation of the Blessed Vir- gin during the month of May, Alice LeBlanc, a junior, was the queen. As always, it gave us joy to attend a feast in honor of our Lady. JUNIOR YEAR After our refreshing summer vaca- tion, we were all very happy to return to ND for our Junior year. However, our class had lost one more member, Barbara Roberts. Our teachers for the second year of commercial course were Sr. Helene-du- Crucifix and Sr. Marie de la Reparation. Officers elected were: President ,. .. H .. Therese Poirier Vice-President .... Rachel Brodeur Secretary .... . . Irene Farland Treasurer . ,. Constance Plouffe Librarian .,.. ...,...... R egina Lussier A Halloween party at Notre Dame Hall was enjoyed by the whole school and many parishioners. We had helped to plan it and were mighty proud of its success. In December, Lucille Vallee and Ce- cile St. Cyr left us. Genevieve Hetu joined our class in February. We were very glad to wel- come her and she certainly has proved to be a worthy classmate. Regina Lussier and Madeleine Le- vesque were lucky enough to attend the Installation of Bishop Wright. It is certainly something they will always remember. For the first time in our new diocese, a declamation contest was held. You can imagine how proud we were to have two winners in the semi-finals in Webster and our final winner for the cup in the Freshman-Sophomore divi- sion in Worcester. We wish to congratu- late Madeleine Levesque and especially Claire Robert, who took final honors for us! There was a composition contest held for all the high schools of Southbridge, and again we came out victorious. Genevieve received first prize for the best compositions among the girls. She was the lucky winner of a beautiful watch. The yearly Crowning of the Blessed Virgin was held and Claire Robert, a Sophomore, was the Queen. History We were in charge of the prom of 1951 and we are very proud to say that it was one of the nicest ever. The Senior-Junior Banquet was held at the Publick House. Monseigneur Lamothe and the Curates were our hon- ored guests. We wish to thank the Se- niors for giving us such a wonderful time. And once more, we came to the clos- ing of a school year. We looked back on our three years with fond memories and hoped that we would be worthy Seniors. SENIOR YEAR As graduates, at last, we began our last year at our Alma Mater. We were glad to return after our summer vaca- tion, but we knew that it would go by altogether too fast. We decided to make the best of it, however, and utilize it to its full extent. President . ,..,.,..... Genevieve Hetu Vice-President .... . Therese Poirier Secretary ..,. ..,.,., . , . Irene Farland Treasurer .....,,,.... Constance Plouffe Our teachers for our Senior year were: Sr. Jean du Cenacle and Sr. Marie de la Reparation. For the first time, we decided to initiate the Freshmen. The boys were so handsome with lipstick and it was a treat to have them all do our bidding. We only hope that the Freshmen en- joyed it as much as we did. During November, we planned a Hal- loween party. It was a great success. We hope that there will always continue to be one each year. An operetta was decided upon in honor of Sr. Ste. Anne's feast. We were mostly all in it and its success is cer- tainly due to Genevieve's able manage- ment. What better Christmas present could we receive but our graduation rings? So, on Christmas day, we got the won- derful news that they had come in. We all rushed to the convent, and once we had them on, there never were nine happier Seniors. When Father: Page announced that he would help us if we wanted a yearbook, we felt as if our cup of happiness had overflowed. Right away we got to work, and we do mean work. We are espe- cially proud to say that our publication was the first officially printed yearbook in the school's history. A social committee was organized to plan school activities and to be in charge of the dances. Four members were chosen from our class: Genevieve, as Chairman, and Rachel, Lorraine and Jeannette. They are certainly doing a good job, as is proved by the growing success of our dances. For the Declamation Contest, we again went to both the semi-finals and the finals. We were proud of all our contestants and especially of Claire Rob- ert since she was victorious at the semi- finals. Although she did not bring home the cup for the finals, we wish to con- gratulate her and say that for us, she was a winner. Basketball was also undertaken this year and might I add that we are more than proud of our boys and their sports- manship. Soon, the Notre Dame basket- ball squad will have its place at the top of the winning teams. We mustn't forget to mention our wonderful cheerleaders and their ar- dent support of the team. They have cheered the players even through loss and they will certainly be rewarded by many victories. By the way, the Senior Class boasts two of these cheerleaders, Rachel, and Genny as captain. During March, Rachel, Connie and Genny broadcasted on the radio over Station WARE. These three girls acted as student disc-jockeys and announced the results of the Top Ten Tunes poll taken in the high school. It certainly was a very interesting experience! On March 14, Senator Hetu traveled to the Boston State House - for Genny was chosen as our Good Government candidate. And she did a fine job as our representative! Although we can not wait till the end of the year to finish the Class History, I know that many more things will hap- pen to make it a colossal success. I wish I could relate the happenings of the Prom, of the Graduation exercises, of our class trip, of our Senior Banquet and of all those other important events, but since it is impossible, I wish to say that I know that they will be occasions of which we will always have fond mem- ories. We will always remember our four years at Notre Dame and our only wish is that we could live them all over again.
