4036 67... Packing power punch in his swing is Irish first sacker Dan Vitali. The Austin pitcher was stingy with the hits, however, and the Friars handed the Irish a 3-I defeat. Out by a whisker is Chris Bockhausen, thanks to a spectacular stretch by the De La Salle first baseman. The Irish proved masters, nevertheless, by downing the Pilots for the second time, 6-4. With a 4-I first place record, Notre Dame took on Salesian. The Knights surprised the Irish by squeaking out a 6-5 victory. Cathedral continued Notre Dame's downward tumble by making the Irish bite the dust, 5-3. Austin, too, welcomed the faltering Irish by winning a hard-fought pitchers' duel, 3-I, thereby handing the Irish their third straight defeat. Then, however, the hungry Irish flychasers feasted on champion bound De La Salle, 6-4. Notre Dame extended its upward climb by powerfullyoverwhelming St. Joe's I4-0. The Irish ball club closed their season on a high note by walloping Salesian, 9-O, which netted them a second place finish. Smiles of victory and relief are expressed by the happy Irish nine: Tom Bolz, Terry Templin, Father John Bryson, Mr. Tom Kelly Icoachl, Chris Bockhausen, Butch Gramer, and Dave Carruthers.

Silent encouragement is given to an Irish batter in a tense situation late in the all important Austin game by Dan Vitali, Prisco Nardone, Chris Bockhausen, Phil Kramer, Terry Templin, Gary Lytle, Dave Carruthers and Tom Bolz. Led by Bob Biernat, Bob Peltz and Russ Gram- er, the lrish jumped off to a victorious start by trouncing Cathedral, 13-2. After dropping a non- league encounter to Catholic Central, 10-5, Notre Dame's spirited squad lost a 6-5 heartbreaker to Austin in extra innings. Bouncing back the Irish whipped De La Salle, 8-6, and St. Joe's ll-1. Terry Templin pitched Notre Dame into first place by besting U. of D. High, A-3, for his fourth straight victory. Batter up! That's what Notre Dame's nifty nine did to many opposing pitchers this spring. Gary Lytle packs a mighty wallop which helped defeat previously unbeaten De La Salle, 8-6. lf, rf- S ,mg SRX
