'S 7 '01 Iabovel Notre Dame's Bob Peltz dashes to a first down on the Austin 25 yard line. On the next play, he arched a colorful touchdown toss to Tom Bolz. The Irish missed the extra point. This turned out to be disastrous. Capitalizing on an Irish fumble, the Friars scored the touchdown and extra point with only minutes left to play. The fighting Irish kept the crowd of 6000 on edge by beginning a spirited march down to the Austin I8 yard stripe. Hopes for victory as well as for a repeat as division champs were crushed when star quarterback Peltz was smothered and crippled on a pass attempt with seconds remaining.
