9. en -5 f F 5 z Junior Prom Committee The Shield Ball ,A I ioa If we could live in an ivory tower on a deserted island with only the people we love, social activities in high school would be a luxury we could ill afford. Not so, however, when even here at Notre Dame we must associate with hundreds of students so different in their' interests, their thinking, and feeling, their background. Not so, either, when later we shall live and work side by side with individuals of other races, other creeds, and other nationalities, with men and women who do not and, try as they may perhaps, who cannot see or understand the wisdom of our ways. This is why the social activities we share together and with teenagers of other schools play such an important role in our life here, They teach us lessons we could never learn from books or in six easy steps, and make a decided contribution to the foundation we are building for tomorrow. By creating as many opportunities as possible to enlarge our circle of friends and acquaintances, Notre Dame is doing a great service indeed, At our dances, at parties, at dinners, and at other social gatherings, we come to see in the other fellow qualities of mind and heart we never suspected. We begin to grasp the impor- tance of iudging each one on his own merit. Slowly but surely, our attitudes change, our faith in others and our trust increase, we feel more and more secure, and, to say the least, the future looms that much brighter. ff V I . ' 1 X.
