Much as we may have failed to show it at times we know and appreciate the importance and the strength of the foundation we are receiving for the years ahead. lt is without a doubt a multi-splendored thing with the Builders attending to every facet of our personality every phase of our development. And yet how keenly we feel the inadequacy of words alone to tell the whole story! For this reason if for no other we offer you this 1957 issue of The Juggler a word and picture story of a foundation in progress a strong foundation one we are sure, that will last forever. 3 A STRONG FOUNDATION LASTS FOREVER with alvariety of opportunities and meaningful experiences is 4.391 11 -n ILL z,,4,1q,, fwlbiu sflicxx. In the chapel, in the classroom, in confidential talks with our teachers, and counsellors, we find strength, light and inspiration. We are given the shining example of Christ as our model and experience the rich rewards of His way. We are introduced to the masters of prose and poetry and learn more effective ways of expression. We are taught how to balance equations, how to read blueprints, how to make sulphur. We learn from the past to understand the present and plan more wisely for the future. With patience and effort, with desire and a will to succeed, with God's help all the way, and our Lady's too, we work with confidence and unfailing optimism. Mill: ca Q ' Archery division of the Conservation Club The modern high school is a far cry from the golden rule days of yesteryear, and Notre Dame is no exception. Our clubs and extracurricular activities offer undreamed opportunities for creative experience, for growth in leadership, for religious and moral development, for training in the wholesome use of leisure time. Thus, we have Our Lady's Sodality with its program for per- sonal sanctification and closer union with Godi We have the Student Council with its delegated authority and responsibility in matters of concern to the student body and to the school. We have the Conservation Club with its interest in the great outdoors and its regard for the protection of this Water Wonderland. We have our publications, The Shield and The Juggler, offering many students the perfect outlet for their special talents and giving many more due recognition for personal achievement in other fields of endeavor.. To be sure, these are only a few of our many outside activities, still, who can assess their contribution to our individual growth and development? What yardstick, what norm is adequate to determine the strength, the quality, the value they add to our foundation. Not the virtuoso who finds in music the perfect medium for self expression, a means unequalled for the sharing of feelings and sentiments too deep, too strong, or too sacred for words, not the student who sees in music a personal challenge, an opportunity for achievement and very real satisfaction, not anyone who has known the magic power to soothe, to comfort and to cheer. These, among others, are the reasons why, two years ago, a Band was organized, and last year, a Glee Club. Their respective achievements are proudly recorded on the follow' ing pages, but more important by far is the implied contributions which both Glee Club, and Band in particular, are making to their active members and indeed, to every student at Notre Dame. We are gaining new respect for good music and a taste for it which has been blunted by much that is popular today and forgotten tomorrow, ln terms of our educational foundation, this new knowledge and appreciation of music which has survived the test of time spells strength and endurance. For all its importance, however, physical fitness is only one of the many reasons for organized sports at Notre Dame where we have made sure the conviction that, on the field of sports are sown the seeds which in later life yield the fruits of victory. Boys are not born unselfish and cooperative, considerate of others and loyal. The sense of iustice or fair play is something we must acquire, and we have to learn responsibility much as we learn to walk or talk. The ability to follow with dignity or lead with humility, and the capacity to make and keep friends are not gifts from Heaven. They are the result of experience in failure as well as in success, the fruit of repeated opportunities to match wits with others and know the sting of defeat as 'well as the thrill of victory These we firmly believe are some of the rich rewards of our expanding sports program a very real and worthwhile contribution to the foundation of as many students as are willing to participate actively or passively directly or indirectly EBV! fQUL gn Q 'X .vdwbiln ,,,, N D hopefuls size up the situation l 1 1 '-f-L 3 ' . - L :if 4 s ' I - ' -' I ff? Not so, however, when even here at Notre Dame we must associate with hundreds of students so different in their' interests, their thinking, and feeling, their background. Not so, either, when later we shall live and work side by side with individuals of other races, other creeds, and other nationalities, with men and women who do not and, try as they may perhaps, who cannot see or understand the wisdom of our ways. This is why the social activities we share together and with teenagers of other schools play such an important role in our life here, They teach us lessons we could never learn from books or in six easy steps, and make a decided contribution to the foundation we are building for tomorrow. By creating as many opportunities as possible to enlarge our circle of friends and acquaintances, Notre Dame is doing a great service indeed, At our dances, at parties, at dinners, and at other social gatherings, we come to see in the other fellow qualities of mind and heart we never suspected. We begin to grasp the impor- tance of iudging each one on his own merit. Slowly but surely, our attitudes change, our faith in others and our trust increase, we feel more and more secure, and, to say the least, the future looms that much brighter. ff V I . ' 1 X.
