Q 1 THE FRESHMAN SQUIRES And had done mfifznlly in lizzie .rpafe Of time, in hope to win his ladfs grate. ITbe Squife: Chaucefs Prologuej The poet's penetrating insight into the fire and enthusiasm which burned in the young would-be-knights heart has left a memorable page about the darling of romantic me- dieval lore - the Squire. His one ruling passion was to master the arts and skills of gallantry and thus prove himself worthy of knighthood. The Notre Dame freshman is the young Squires scholastic counterpart. In the short space of one year, he tries with feverish activity and devotion to master the intellectual, cultural, and physical arts of school life, to stamp himself as worthy Crusader timber, and, in the main, to win the grace of his Lady, Notre Dame Alma Mater. . 3 L . .4 ' ? kid 4 f 3 N . I To Lm:a.rla: Richard Lovelacej The dashing cavalier wielding the weapons of his trade - sword, horse, and shield - with finesse and experienced skill has fired the imagination of champions of liberty throughout the ages. But the cavalier is noble, not only in his military science, but especially in the stronger faith with which he embraces his just causes. The Notre Dame junior who has acquired a new echelon in the ranks of upperclass- men embraces school causes with greater, unalloyed devotion. With the weapons of his mind, heart, and hands he rides close to the forefront meeting the challenge hurled at his Alma Mater's honor and glory. x ff' , 5 al' X9 JUN 1sRo'1'HER ALFRED. sc I I Irs very simple. rc-allyf' M. IO9 fx VARSITY HIGHLIGHTS After posting three winning seasons in a row. the local cagers compiled an 8-and-12 retord under the helm of a new eoath. Gerry Belliveau. The Blue and Vilhite actually out- scored their foes from the floor but were able to Convert only for 59 per cent from the free stripe. or 245 out of 414. while their opponents sank 65 per Cent. or 518 out of 506. Captain Tom Barnicle. a North Worcester All Star nominee. led the attack with 312 points from the floor. while Fran Cormier. honorable mention. had 21'. Both were superb rebounders and jackie Kendra proved an extellent playmaker. The inability of the South Streeters to hold preearious leads in the waning moments of four hoop contests. three of them against titv teams, was the margin of difference between a winning and losing season. ln all four tilts. the locals held the advantage with less than a minute to go. but the failure to freeze or to hit from the foul line tost the decision. Thrilling last-minute wins in the last two contests buoyed up mentor Belliveau's hope that the locals have snapped their string of tlose-game losses and have learned to play headsbup ball under pressure. B-SQUAD HIGHLIGHTS XVith added experience from summer league bas- ketball, the B-squad posted an enviable 12-8 record under the tutelage of Coach Craig Corliss. Sparked by the high scoring antics of Don LeBlanc, Ed Mclntyre, and Nitlt Martines, the daring floor play of Dave Auger, and the rebounding of Darby XX'all-:er and Paul Foster, the prelim heroes surprisingly ran roughshod over most of their Worcester opponents while experiencing some difficulty with the generally weaker teams ot' North Worcester County. The Corlissmen showed great improvement in all phases of the game, especially in driving, ball hand- ling, and rebounding. Only foul shooting, a traditional local nemesis, was below par. Don LeBlanc showing fine form It! SQUIRE HIGHLIGHTS Despite a 2-7 record, Squire coaches Craig Corliss and Brother Ber- nard, S.C., failed to express concern, as several frosh hoopsters showed tremendous improvement in dribbling and shooting with either hand. Fundamentals and jump shooting are what we are after, said Cor- liss, and we believe we have a nucleus of fine ballplayers on the frosh squad. The locals bested Lunenburg and Fitchburg Teachers' College and lost close decisions to Saint Bernard's, Leominster and Fitchburg, win- ners and runner-ups respectively, in the frosh loop, also downed the locals. Promising frosh cagers were Robert Burrill, Terry Slattery, Denis Leger, David Basque, Richard Deschenes, Maurice Roy, Raymond Gas- tonguay, and Kevin O'C0nnor. II3 FRESH MAN BASKETBALL From. fell!
