In the Cross School Life Triumphs The essential fact of Christianity is the Resurrection and not Redemption. But as Bishop Sheen curtly reminded: There is no Easter Sunday without Good Friday. And thus we see on the Notre Dame emblem the cross stands prominent, retaining as it were its eminence of Calvary over redeemed man. It is a cross fleurettee in silver which reminds us remotely of the forma- tive ecclesiastical stages of New England, and proximately of our Superiors and teachers whose greatest Faith is that they have abandoned all, taken up their cross, and followed Christ. The Seniors are tenderly remembered in the loving, suppliant call of the Doceat Mel They call to their school and to Her, Notre Dame of Good Counsel, to fill them with the sources of human knowledge and divine wisdom. The Torteaux or discs, four in number at the top of the emblem, are a symbol of the under- classmen. They symbolize the Authority to which students must submit with respect, but also the eager incentive to spur them on in their ideal of becoming educated Christian gentlemen.

Great Hearts Turn the ln the middle of the Notre Dame emblem stands an artistic gold monogram of Mary encased, as it were. by a red Heart. The one recalls our consecration to Our Lady, the other our apostolic devotion to the Sacred Heart as students of His dedi- cated Brothers. And by way of analogy. since a manls heart is the motor of all his living activities. so then the gold monogram and red heart symbolize all the activities of the Crusaders. The color of the two symbols. one gold, the other red. are also force- ful reminders that we must always act with the noblest intentions of love. and to walk in all strength- in the pursuit of the virtue of faith.
