But as Bishop Sheen curtly reminded: There is no Easter Sunday without Good Friday. And thus we see on the Notre Dame emblem the cross stands prominent, retaining as it were its eminence of Calvary over redeemed man. It is a cross fleurettee in silver which reminds us remotely of the forma- tive ecclesiastical stages of New England, and proximately of our Superiors and teachers whose greatest Faith is that they have abandoned all, taken up their cross, and followed Christ. The Seniors are tenderly remembered in the loving, suppliant call of the Doceat Mel They call to their school and to Her, Notre Dame of Good Counsel, to fill them with the sources of human knowledge and divine wisdom. The Torteaux or discs, four in number at the top of the emblem, are a symbol of the under- classmen. They symbolize the Authority to which students must submit with respect, but also the eager incentive to spur them on in their ideal of becoming educated Christian gentlemen. - -: -Qi r QD .llll ll l 6. mlU mM JH ef , Great Hearts Turn the ln the middle of the Notre Dame emblem stands an artistic gold monogram of Mary encased, as it were. by a red Heart. The one recalls our consecration to Our Lady, the other our apostolic devotion to the Sacred Heart as students of His dedi- cated Brothers. And by way of analogy. since a manls heart is the motor of all his living activities. so then the gold monogram and red heart symbolize all the activities of the Crusaders. The color of the two symbols. one gold, the other red. are also force- ful reminders that we must always act with the noblest intentions of love. and to walk in all strength- in the pursuit of the virtue of faith. A young man without a solid moral training is a ship without a keel and without a destination on the turlrulent sea of life. The Confraternity of the Sacred Heart is an organization which purports to give a solid religious training to a select few, and to reach out to the remaining students through the influence of these same few. The Con- fraternily, therefore, consists of young men dedicated to the ideals of perfecting themselves in the practice of their Catholic Faith through the devotion to the Sacred Heart. These teenagers through their leadership endeavor to im-ulcate into the other memliers of the student hody the con- victions they have made their own through prayer and meditation. Although seldom in the limelight, the Con- fraternity memliers have brought a renewed religious vigor in the school through such organizations as The Living Rosary, the En- thronement of the Sacred Heart in the class- rooms, novenas, and Lenten projects, Assured- ly each memher, through his generosity and constancy in spreading the devotion to the Sacred Heart, will have his name written in this same Heart Mnever to lie effacedf' SOPHOMORE KQONFRATERNITY -- lf-ft to right: G. Under the new direction of Brother Giles the Notre Dame Clee Club continued its meteoric rise to the pinnacle of vocal entertainment. lts thirty and more members sectioned into threc singing parts gave beautiful renditions of religious hymns, classical pieces, and popular songs at our different school functions and assemblies. As truly as music is the universal language of all men. the Clee Club often expressed the common thought and emotion of us all during those several school functions. Their greatest performance was their annual minstrel show in November entitled Showboat. A thronging crowd of 900 parents and teenagers enjoyed the vast repertoire of the members and volunteers. as they strutted through their songs and jokes in front of a stage decor of the Showboat Robert E. Lee. In December the young performers went to Gardner to entertain the Catholic Women's League. They also added great warmth and cheer to the closing ceremonies of the l956-57 school year. Athletic Moderator X f ff XXXW A ,X ,J X...-1 ,f ff Sports even in a high school is a vast organizational structure of men, equipment, transportation, and schedules that can tax the energy and patience of even the greatest busi- ness executive. At Notre Dame, Brother Ar- mand has held the exacting job of athletic moderator for five years, and he has'-been largely responsible for the smooth operating machinery found in the Southstreet school's sports world. His tireless effort to improve the quality and quantity of Notre Dame athletes and equipment, has made the Crusader school a North Worcester County power in all the four major sports. Also his courtesy and reception of opposing coaches and teams have been impeccable. But his great- est contribution to area sports has undoubted- ly been and still is his cherished ambition of welding all North Worcester County schools into a federation of competitive but friendly sports. km true and complete dCflI1lt1OH Pfllltclllfbll tate me o man a1m the dexelopment of the bodx to make 1t the dl clpllned m tru ment of the enlwhtened mlnd And port haxe proxen mxaluable for thu pulpo e That 1 uhx ID the 'Notre Dame cuxlleulum mter cholabtxc Sport are vnen thelr proper txme and place The Covwheel atop the sehool emblem ls a flttmg symbol for Qpolt and a forceful xemmder that fan and YN1IlIllHg athletleb must wheel ln um on mth ewelw C00 lthe 1nd1v1d ual playerj dlpplng and rlslng as the hub fthe teamt dictates The sporta dlllllOIlll6S at Notre Dame are juatly proud that lll fue years of athletle competxtlon great achxewementm were made 1n teachmg every player the notlonm of falr play and spoxtbmanshlp In the wlsh of the CYC wouth pledge Crusader athletes haue been humble xlctola and graclous lo CIS For thlb we owe our coachmg personnel the ment of true edueatora of the man lll each one of thelr playerb Ill football basketball tlaek and babebill fx L1 -erm- My ' t V 'nth ? 1 .15 , v MR. JOHN O'GRADY r' L -51:17. Stepping victoriously into the Notre Dame football system this year was new head coach .lack 0'Crady. He made a young, unsure team, tabbed as a sleeping giant. into the Crusaders' winningest grid squad. His gridsters trained to clockwork precision and hard-charging foot- ball scored six victories with only two losses. He developed a highly potent backfield that scored over 150 points. and a vicious line that gave but 78 points. Coach 0'Crady, a former Concord High and Boston University player, made great football know-how and rigid training sessions his winning factors. Still greater heights are expected of his charges in his second year at the helm. ,-. Q ,- s., MR, GUY DIBENEDETTO One of the first Fitchburg men to devote their time and effort to the Notre Dame sports cause was Guy DiBenedetto. He brought to the first Crusader gridmen not only football know-how, but valuable character training which early stamped Notre Dame football as clean but hard fought. Despite young and undermanned varsities and scanty training and playing equipment, he produced teams of great defensive strength. His finest hour was undoubtedly his upset over St. Bernard's 1 in 1955. MR. ERNEST NOLE Another in the long line of devoted founding friends of the Notre Dame cause is personable Ernie Nole. His work with Crusader athletes has been incalculable. and his valuable line coaching and scouting have helped to produce some of the most alert and better defensive lines in the country. As freshman coach he has tabbed and developed some of the brightest prospects on today's winning varsity. I . E4,v fi-ng: X A Xt . ASS.-V ' t 1' , F '. His game of the year was un doubtedly at Maynard when he recovered a touchdown fumble to give the O'Grady men a squeaker, 7-6. ROGER GACNE Roger Gagne was one of the four-season veterans on the stalwart Notre Dame line that brought the Crusaders their first winnhxg football season. Also one of the 1956 grid co- captains his constant, rugged line work at tackle was an inspiration to the whole team which recognized his unsung greatness. A great take-charge guy he maintained a great fighting spirit on the whole team. RONALD BEAULAC A two-year varsity man who excelled in several positions is versatile Ronald Beaulac. Alternating at guard and left end, he proved a good two-way player with a knack of being at the right place at the right time.
