BROTHER DENNIS, S.C., B.A. A man needing no introduction, Brother Dennis was the motive force of Notre Dame High School for the first three years. He was vice principal, a member ol the school board, and always an active recruiter both for the school and the community. His seal for the welfare of each and every young Crusader will remain unparalleled in the history of our school. Although a specialized teacher of Latin and foreign languages, he held his own in any other high school subject, whether it be religion, math, speech or dramalics. He has left, as it were, a part of himself here in the Alma Mater Song and in the school emblem, both creations ol his prolific mind. Can we ever forge! such an imposing personality? BROTHER EUGENE, SC.. MA. Piety, a great spirit of faith, and nnllagging devotion to our school beat characterize Brother Eugene. Brother was one of the varlicat ro- cruitera. After having spent a year of apt-uializeil study in Rome, he joined the teaching staff in the fall of '53. Aa vice principal, junior class advisor, and director of the Leaguf- of the Sacred Heart, he exerted a great inlluvm-e over the entire student body. A perfct-liunisl at heart, he found many a way ui he-tte-ring the school organism. An English scholar himself, hr- was able to give to each uf his English sliuherits an immediate preparation for 1-ull:-gn. Brother Eugene was called upon in 1955 tu assunu' the direction of is sevondnry school at St. Colum- ban's, England. He is 1-quul tn the tasks at hand. The Crusade-ra arul the faculty int-mhcrs have lost in him a sonrvt- ul' inspiration and encouragement. , VH., -V . 7 1.-- 1, . Divine Providence has given Her to us not only as the inspira- tion for our school days here, but as our secure hope for the future. Our world can be restored to Christ through her intercession. Evil, today as always, shall be crushed by her heel. Christian leaders today are staunchly devoted to her. Mary, teach us to live the truths Christ taught, to center our lives in Him. To help obviate to these and other needs the Notre Dame Forensic Association was founded in 1954 by Brother Reginald. Through painstaking effort and research the debaters have reached a better un- derstanding of socio-political truth and developed the ability to impart it with light and power. To insure the prosperity of debating at the school, the Association is divided into the Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Senior groups. Tom Lomaglio and John Peralta, two great performers, were elected to the Catholic Free Press All-Star Eleven on the first and second teams. Dick Dandini was named its athlete of the week. In 1955, the first full varsity season attracted 67 re- cruits including our six four-year 1nen: Ron Lamou- reux, John Peralta, Dick Dandini, Bill Brodeur, Tom Lomaglio, and Chico Spinelli. We lost a Bernardian Bowl opener to St. Clementls of Somerville due to ex- cessive fumbling. Dandini scored our lone tally in the 13-7 game. Next, the gridders held a heavily-favored Fitchburg High team to a sole touchdown and a safety in their first meeting at Crocker Field before 2500 fans. The Sentinel praised Peralta and Spinelli for a moral victory over the Red and Cray. Despite good showings they also lost to Northbridge and to St. Columbkille's. Sweeping reverses and a sharp pass attack were the causes of those two Crusader down- falls. In the remaining four games the Crusader goal line was to be crossed but once more. Deliitetto, managers. ln November of 1955. our first four-year varsity team was assembled. The Blue and White court game still remained below par against Catholic Divi- sion foes as they beat only one Worcester team. St. Stephens Nevertheless the Crusaders lost no time in stamping themselves as the best North Wor- cester County team as it racked off seven straight victories against area competition. including vic- tories oy er Fitchburg and St. Rernards Then with the city and North Wforcester County titles almost assured. tragedy struck. Plagued with injuries and listless play the local hoopsters suffered a complete reversal of form which saw their spirited game fall off woefully. As a result they reeled off seven consecutive defeats losing among these to Fitch- burg. St. Bernardis and Athol High in return en- gagements. Thus the coveted titles were claimed bv the Red and Gray cagers whose only county blemish was our thrilling game-ending 51-48 win on their home floor before a sellout crowd of 1200. The Crusaders thus ended the season with an ll-13 record. Craig Corliss retained his city scoring champion- ship with -1-l2 points. He also set a new Wvorcester moderator. L. Cormier. Keating. Benoit. Blanchctte, iN, Cormier Kneeling: Lussier, manager. Lf-clair. Stewart, Uandini. Corliss. County record with 47 points in the second Cru- sader-Cardner game in which the locals scored Ui points. Great performances were also given by Warren Baker with his drives and nifty' lay ups. and by Greg Tessier and Billy Brodeur with their rebounding and good court game. The greatest credit goes to Coach Mucho Pappas whose patient hand and court know-how guided the team during the season. Credit is also due those unsung reserves whose timely relieving saved many a game. These are Norm Cormier. Bob Keating. Doug Han- nula. Vic Blanchette. Dick Dandini. George LeClair. Don Benoit, and Clayton Cardinal. The Junior varsity cagers. fast and sharpshoot- ing, amassed a record of l2 wins and 10 losses. Great performances were given by joe Tagg. John Karl-cutt. Alan Stewart, Ronald Sibley. Richard Trudel, Charlie Sicard. The freshmen hoopsters coached by Don Boud- reau, senior, lost but four games. two of which they later avenged.
