ON A CLEAR DAY Melinda Welles makes one last attempt to resist the charm of her eighteenth .century painter, Edward. Daisy Gamble is a flighty, happy-go-lucky cigarette addict, afflicted with strange powers that embarrass her boyfriend Warren. His future with Fillerby Baby Products does not provide for a wife who can make flowers grow by singing to them, or who can find lost articles before they're missed. Desperate to become normal, Daisy asks psy- chiatrist Mark Bruckner for help. Under hypnosis, Daisy reveals a previous ex- istence as Melinda Welles, when she broke eighteenth century tradition to marry the artist she loved, Edward Moncrief. Fascinated at first by the scientific aspects of the case, Mark grad- ually falls under the spell of the elusive Melinda. Accidentally, Daisy discovers that Mark is using her only to summon Melinda. She mourns, What did I have that I don't have? and resolves never to see him again. The fighting spirit of the Melinda buried within her begins to rise.
