C. there lived a man, Diogenes by name, who set out to find an honest man. In the course of his travels he lived a life of austerity and self-mortification so that he himself might become a better man. Although he met many outstanding persons he always seemed to find a dishonest side to each of them. He died never completely convinced that there was an honest man in existence. The fundamental purpose of Notre Dame is to build honest men through spiritual, social, and academic achievements. We invite you to travel along with our modern Diogenes, through the pages of Credo '67, to view the making of these honest men. We invite you to see how the training and discipline received from a devoted faculty has been the foundation upon which these men have built their lives. 2 4 .,. r vn- I E v.-if-an in ata 0' gf 'E .QI - L.. ra ixx A 5' .1 -QQ. ry fa , Q :WSJ M' lla-'il ,,,,,,,QlIiL..1 M -ally L 1 4 nf? .1-it--Y X it f a' ., 1,3 n, 11 Rf yi V 5 em C Q , sg li SEM 1? 1 5511. an is iw 5 1 SWS .,.-warn E Q 5 2 if W ,:1,Mi fi4M+ P5 .. Through the courage of his convictions, he has sparked a new spirit of ecumenism which has resulted in many rapid changes within the Catholic Church. We, the students at Notre Dame, admire his incentive and initiative to unite all faiths into a single universal Church. He has set an example which all world leaders ought to follow in their strive for harmony among nations - unification by peaceful means. lt is our fervent hope that all of his obiectives will be realized and we sincerely proclaim Viva il Papo! HIS HOLINESS POPE PAUL Vl Instrumental in the founding and early de- velopment of Notre Dame High School, Mother Mary Bride has continued to act as its benefactress during the past six years. As Mother General of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, she vigorously fostered and implemented a program designed to meet the needs of both students and faculty. A new convent, housing twenty-eight faculty members, and an athletic stadium are two very tangible testimonials to her personal interest and material contributions. Through her wisdom, fore- sight and direct appointment, Notre Dame has the first lay vice-principal in the diocese. We are grateful to Mother for the continued support and encouragement she has shown along with her provision of opportunities for our personal and academic improvement. Their keen interest in all levels of school life, their eagerness to aid us in improving ourselves, and their capable ability to advise us during our adolescence have made us their debtors for years to come. Now, we can go forth better prepared to take our place in society and to face its trials and tribu- lations. As we strive for theuright we can feel assured that the foundation has been laid for us at Notre Dame by a devoted faculty. To all of our teachers-Iaity as well as reli- gious-we wish to extend our sincerest thanks. We shall never 'forget your unselfish, untiring efforts! y 10 SISTER MARY DECLAN, R.5.M., Principal FATHER MICHAEL REAGAN, Chaplain ,,,, ,, .ZZ-4: M-AMW, . -19660-1, fchlz 40,90 ,gzfu ' , ,f,4,d,- i CU ,,., fp Cv d 44 5 www Lflf ,f A J AV 549, MM Awy xyd -fiilvdowqb Wfvxl, cw. He too, will be in search of honesty and truthfulness and will depend on these virtues as he pauses on the brink of his future. Although the senior may not spend hours each day evaluating the personalities of those persons with whom he may come in contact, he will search for the basic fundamentals which have been instilled within himself at Notre Dame. After completing his education here at N. D., the senior is prepared to step forth into the world with the necessary qualities for a successful life. With their youth and vitality, the seniors will iniect a new life imbued with Christian morality into every phase of human society. D. carrying on a rapid conversation in Spanish. ln case you're still wonder- ing, it was Lucrecia Braham and Constanza Caro, our two foreign exchange students, getting together for a chat between classes. Lucrecia, an avid admirer of basketball and the guitar, came to Elmira from Guatemala. She is planning to study at Saint Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, which is now her present home. However, before doing so she found it necessary to improve both her English and her knowledge of chemistry. She started attending Notre Dame last October in preparation for her future study in the field of nursing. Constanza arrived at the home of Dr. and Mrs. William Kelly, as the guest of their daughter Mary, on Thanks- .1 V, K.-.,,... :QE P ar 4 si 'S IW LUCRECIA BRAHAM giving Day. She remained there until February when she moved to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Gridley and their daughter Mary Anne until June. Here at Notre Dame she studied English, Spanish American history and art. Constanza claimed that swim- ming was her favorite hobby and that she also enioyed reading. Upon her return to Colombia, Constanza plans to study psychology at the local university. The entire student body enioyed the infectious laughter, gaiety, and friendliness of both students and will always remember them. To you Lucrecia and to you Constanza, we wish to extend our best wishes for a successful future and to tell you that we will miss you in the coming years. Marcia McCarthy, Notre Dame's first candidate to suc- cessfully capture the title of Chemung County's Junior Miss, was crowned on November 5, i966 at the Horsehead's High School Auditorium. The event was the climax of many long hours of rehearsals and interviews involving all ofthe candidates. Marcia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Justin McCarthy, along with Mary Anne Gridley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gridley, represented Notre Dame in the pageant. As a result of winning the title on the local level, Marcia received a three-hundred dollar scholarship. She was also awarded the 'first place trophies for Scholarship and Achievement and Creative and Performing Arts for her presentation of Debussy's First Arabesque on the piano. Marcia then traveled to Rochester for the state finals held on November 26 and 27. There she placed as second runnerup and was recipient of a three-hundred dollar savings bond. Marcia has indeed earned her title as she undoubtedly has all of the outstanding qualities which a Junior Miss must possess. She has truly displayed the rewards of a Catholic education received at N. D. It is with great pride, Marcia, that we say that Chemung County's Junior Miss is our Junior Miss. 1 A r' L X , ... A is f dl' -1 2 Q bf- ii., in l lf f F R- N. Being a scientific observer, our modern Dio- genes cannot fail to notice that the spirited under- classmen here at Notre Dame are already striving diligently to attain their desired goals. The anxious underclassmen move toward these goals of intellectual achievement and personal maturity by working eagerly to succeed at whatever they attempt. Each one desires to develop himself and his abilities to the maximum. Young, efficient and ambitious, they are the honest men of tomorrow, for today they are willing to accept the discipline and criticism aimed at making them better students-better people. 50 51 .,, , .' zu 4 . Q i 4 ln the past pages we have viewed, along with our friend Diogenes, the students in the light of their academic lives. But a school consists of more than desks, blackboards and teachers. Acti- vities fill the gap and help round out a person's character. These extra-curricular activities help bring out latent talents and develop a sense of responsi- bility and cooperation between students and faculty. Each club extends different advantages to its members but all serve the same dual pur- pose: extending a goal to work for and creating a channel for leisure time. As Diogenes pointed out to us when we first met-a good education is of the utmost import- ance but he also states that it has to be coupled with an active body of organizations to complete a person for the future. 78 11. - , 1 1, - I xx sd T2 , tg, 1 ' L Q it . ix , xg? SODALITY The Sodality, one of the largest student organizations at Notre Dame, has as its main purpose the bringing of Christ into the hearts of others. Throughout the year its officers and members directed their proiects toward this goal. Under the guidance of Sister M. Jane Frances and the leadership of Lawrence Comereski, the Sodality began its money- making proiects with the annual dance and Christmas card sale. Traditionally, on December 21, the Christ the King Mass was celebrated with each school organi- zation being represented on the stage. To Jesus, Through Mary expresses the main theme of the annual May Day Ceremony held in honor of Our Blessed Lady. The entire student body participated in the festivities. Besides these maior contributions to school activity, the Sodality also worked the concession stand after school. The CREDO Staff takes time out to relax and look at their work. CREDO The Credo staff worked continuously to produce the yearbook. From the 'first planning sessions a year ago to the crowded picture taking days, all looked towards the finished product. The sponsor drive was a big success and assured the staff of ample funds for color pictures and extra features. The yearbook press entertained the staff by showing them how a yearbook was actu- ally put together and then invited the staff to lunch in Rochester. Many conferences and much corre- spondence between editors, moderator and the press led to the finished CREDO. 86 l The MARYLEAF and GENESIS staffs worked long and hard to produce the fine literary works that the school enjoyed all year long. Each energetic worker gave of his time and energy to produce a monthly paper and at the end of the year our literary magazine. It is time out to read their finished product for the MARYLEAF staff members: JoAnne Marks, Georgianna Glace, William Coughlin, Christine longwell, Sister M, Kilion iseatedj, James McGill, Rinda North, Jane Lilley, Mary Lou Carroll, Ellen Youngmon, Terrance Kirkpartick, Albert Zinn and William Rempe. ON A CLEAR DAY Melinda Welles makes one last attempt to resist the charm of her eighteenth .century painter, Edward. Daisy Gamble is a flighty, happy-go-lucky cigarette addict, afflicted with strange powers that embarrass her boyfriend Warren. His future with Fillerby Baby Products does not provide for a wife who can make flowers grow by singing to them, or who can find lost articles before they're missed. Desperate to become normal, Daisy asks psy- chiatrist Mark Bruckner for help. Under hypnosis, Daisy reveals a previous ex- istence as Melinda Welles, when she broke eighteenth century tradition to marry the artist she loved, Edward Moncrief. Fascinated at first by the scientific aspects of the case, Mark grad- ually falls under the spell of the elusive Melinda. Accidentally, Daisy discovers that Mark is using her only to summon Melinda. She mourns, What did I have that I don't have? and resolves never to see him again. The fighting spirit of the Melinda buried within her begins to rise. Mark's only recourse is an attempt at extrasensory per- suasion to bring DaisyfMelinda back to him-on a clear day--forever- I ' X 1.4- l 1 A ,H ' A ,,, ,- ..f .MQ nk, t, - g ' In A A x , -,rl .1 5 Hi ,. Whether it be on the football field, basketball court, wrestling mat or baseball diamond -win or lose - this kind of spirit is exhibited. As always there has to be someone at the top to lead and guide our actions. Not only the athletes but the whole student body realizes the loyalty of our coaches--Mr. Teta, Mr. Tessier, Mr. Hill, Mr. Goodman and Mr. Maio. By giving of themselves they have brought us fame, vic- tories, school spirit and a realization of what team work can do for a group of aspiring athletes striving to achieve a common goal.
