To Mary, the Mystic Rose of God, under the beautiful title of the Im- maculate Conception, the precious Pearl of our century and the Tower of Strength against our foes, we pledge our troth and dedicate our yearbook. Placing our trust in this Anchor of Hope, we fear not, though these days are fraught with imminent danger of war and our vision of the future is clouded by the fog of international confusion. It is we who must rekindle the flame in the Lamp of Christianity, whose rays alone will guide us to peace on earth. Therefore, with Catho- lic principles as our weapon and our Victorious Mother leading us on- ward to fight the good fight, let us throw back our shoulders, look up to the stars and accept this challenge presentedto Christian Youth of to- day. The flower of our valley Is like a holy flame That lights both earth and heaven And bears a sacred nameg In loving veneration, In childlike joy and awe, We sing the praise of Mary, The Rose without a flaw. 60-Sditars Patricia Murphy Mary Lou Secreta We are happy to present this pictorial record of the joyful, productive hours of academic toil, the gay festive gatherings at school events and the friendly atmosphere of students and faculty . It is our desire to have this issue of Notre Dame mean more thana sou- venir from 1959, since we have tried to produce an annual that is not just a reminder of classmates, events, and good times. Easily depicted are the highlights of our years at Notre Dame g less easily, it is to express that which made our four years fruitful---a Christian Education. In our yearbook we wish to show how the principles of a Christian Edu- cation are being realized in our school organization. May the them'e, Chris- tian Education, which we have adopted express the truth, that, there can be no ideally perfect education which is not Christian. 6 CHRISTIAN CITIZENS OF HEAVEN AND AMERICA Kantculs DEDICATION ....... Christian Education , of which our late Holy Father speaks, belongs primarily to our good parents. Secondly, it rests in the capable hands of our pastors and teachers who are responsible for the Christian Education of hundreds of young Catholics in Notre Dame High School. We Seniors have enjoyed the privilege of sharing the be- nefits derived from their expert guidance and vision as edu- cators, dedicated to the philosophy, that only education with religion shapes the ideal citizen for the future. Our Instructors 4711 tudies We are their garden where they sow the seeds of culture and of truth, They tend with loving care The beauty they find there, They snip the wild shoots from the stem, Then soothe with ointment each of them. We are their garden--a beautiful garden-- a garden of youth. 16 Qaculty .qtygf Sister Eulalia Latin, Social Studies V ' 35,564 r.. LIFE A SECOND PHASE IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION 65 LETTERS AND ARTS REVEAL THE DIVINE Nj Hamlet sits here too with the child like Ophelia at his side, and Juliet listens as the rustling of leaves pro- claims that Romeo is climbing to her balconied casement. Here are many other characters from romances, bio- graphies, essays, and dramas, all con- tributing to our knowledge of human character. BROWSING AMONG BOOKS Here we meet David Copperfield, Oliver Twist and the other children of Dickens' pen, and we come to realize our fortune of being children of the twentieth century. Here stands our late Pope Pius XII who taught us how to carry .high the lantern of hope, here lives Thomas Dooley enduring uncomplainingly the hardships of native life, here in the shadows lurks Macbeth, stained with the guilt of in- ordinate ambitions. CONTRIBUTES TC CHARACTER BY TRAINING THE MIND'S PLAN IN ALL ORDERS OF CREATION BOOK EXHIBIT Diana Patsy and Mary Perris ex- amine books displayed during Catholic Book Week. Morning, evening, noon and night, praise God! sang Browning's Theocrite . A similar prayer may be offered by the businessman who gets a good typist, especially, our efficient yearbook typist, Josephine Simon. Commercial art, added to the curriculum this year, has furnished us with beautiful signs at every school function. ACCURACY AND INTEGRITY Shorthand is no stumbling block for this splendid group of students. The juniors claim it's a thrill to be able to type that first sentence without peeking at the keys even once. Here the pupil becomes the teacher in business mathematics. 73 IN SOCIETY I ws -s.! A thoroughly Christian Education that distinguishes Notre Dame's Curriculum shall ever be held a cherished privilege and a precious heritage. Equipped with those fundamentals that make progress secure, we graduates are destined to wield a salutary influence through many generations. What we have absorbed during these four scholastic years, in surroundings, where sacrifice, innocence and love are happily blended, will stand by us forever. We salute our Alma Mater, praying that the good works we have so well begun, may be crowned with eternal splendors. Farewell, dear Alma Mater! We leave thee with regret, Where 'er our path-ways lead us, We ne'er shall thee forget. Sweet memories cluster 'round thee Like attar of the rose, And golden is the vision, That ever brightly glows.
