At the beginning of the school year it was very easy to distinguish freshmen from other students. lt was not at all unusual to see one wandering aimless- ly around looking for the swimming pool or furiously pounding a locker that wouldn t open because the combination was forgotten. As the average frosh became used to the daily routine he began to look a little less like a lost puppy and more like a self- assured member of the school community. The enthusiastic newcomers took pride in their new enviornment and displayed a healthy school spirit. This sense of pride and accomplishment was carried over into every project and activity taken on Drive where competition on all levels is always keen the freshmen placed a close second to the highest class the sophomores. Never being content with second best the energetic frosh challenged the top-seeded sophs to a volleyball game. Because of some confusion in the scoring the first contest was called a draw but the rematch was won by the sophomores in the last few seconds. Although the by the Class of '81 this year. Freshmen directed their energies into such activi- ties as the Koinonia Club s Socials for Special Peo- ple and the Right to Life March in Washington D.C. where an impressive number of them attend- ed. Their Christmas project turned out to be a big hit with the old and the sick in area nursing homes who received small gifts from them. They carefully planned out and sponsored their own successful dance which was held on the evening of February 24. A pie-eating contest, whose participants were sponsored by anyone wishing to help the Ad Drive, was held during March. As a grand finale to their year's activities, the freshman edition of The Gong Show was presented. The freshman class has proven itself to be a vital part of the Notre Dame community. They have a lot of potential and much to offer the school asthey settle down to relax and enjoy their next three years at Notre Dame. ENTHUSIASTIC NEWCOMERS PARTICIPATE
