Mr. Al Verdel 'Wie Mr. AI Verdel One experience that is surely dreaded by every Notre Dame student is that of having to stand on the wrong side of the dean of discipline s desk But the man on the other side of the desk doesn t nec essarily think that his side is always the right side Mr Albert Verdel has served for four consecutive years as Notre Dame s dean of discipline And when he says it s not always easy it s the voice of exper :ence you hear His past positions are impressive enough to put respect into the hearts of the most irreverent. Among them are coach of Bordentown Militarys football team for twenty-one years a coaching position with the Phillies Cyes the Phil- lieslb in 1944 and what was probably the most challenging part of his career coaching Notre Dame s football team for seven years. With all of this experience in sports behind him there are certain parallels Mr. Verdel has found be- tween discipline in sports and that in school. For instance, Any coach will say that a well-disciplined Mrs. Helen Shelly Mr. Al Verdel team will win more than their share of games. lf there s no discipline there are problems. Mr Verdel feels that the hardest part of his job is making decisions that have to do with dealing out particularly difficult because lt s hard to have a student not fit into the community. But according to Mr Verdel discipline is not all punishment. He believes in constructive discipline which includes helping in personal matters and guiding the students in the proper direction. In spite of the stigma that is bound to be attached to any discipline office the job even has its joys. Mr. Verdel feels that by working with students and see- ing them mature he contributes to that growth and in effect grows with them. He belives that discipline is a combination of sternness and love. You have to have both. Thanks to Mr. Verdel's efforts, we've got both at Notre Dame. MR. VERDEL WEIGHS THE ISSUES
