PRINCIPAL We of the Arches staff, together with the entire student body, would like to ex- press our sincere thanks to Brother Robert for his constant efforts on our behalf BROTHER EAGAN HUNTER, C.S.C. Diredor of Studies BROTHER CHARLES ESCOBAR, C.S.C. Treasurer BROTHER BENIGNUS BEUTTER, C.S.C. Vice-Principal MRS. HAROLD KANE School Secretary 7 ATICDN Brother Nivard was raised and educated in Wisconsin. In 1931 Brother entered the Sacred Heart Postulate to begin training for re- ception into the Holy Cross Brothers. After completing his novitiate train- ing, Brother Nivard attended Notre Dame University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. Sub- sequent summer school work at Notre Dame University led to a Mas- ter's degree in physics, and further post-graduate work was completed at Catholic University of America, Long Beach State College, and Im- maculate Heart College. ln the sum- mer of 1958 Brother Nivard studied at Reed College in Portland, where he was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to study a course in modern physics as de- signed for high schools by the Physi- cal Science Study Commission. This course was introduced into the Notre Dame High School curriculum upon Brother's return from Reed College. Last summer he taught this new physics program to other high school instructors attending Immaculate Heart College. Brother Nivard was assigned to Notre Dame High School in 1951, and in his various curricular and extra-curricular positions he has im- pressed his students and fellow teachers with his congenial manner and devotion to duty. We, the students and faculty of Notre Dame High School, dedicate the 1960 yearbook to this devoted Brother of Holy Cross on the occa- sion of his completion of twenty- five years of service to youth in the Congregation of Holy Cross. Brother Nivard through his patient explanations has led many boys to the awareness of the importance of the physical sciences. ,a- 0' E Mass was celebrated on February 2 for Brother Nivard and Brother Rembert on the occasion of their twenty-fifth anniversaries. The an- swer to this question is not found in it being a moral obligation of parents, or even that their boys will get a better education. No, it is much more than that. At Notre Dame religious instruction is empha- sized. Moreover, our learning is not restricted to the classroom, we learn from the daily morning confession and communion, the three one-day retreats a year, the various religious and vocational talks, and the influ- ence engendered by the Brothers of Holy Cross. Through these means we learn the validity of a Catholic education, the validity of sound religious principles and the validity of a good Christian life. -Greg Dempsey One of the greatest advantages of a Catholic education is the availability of the sacraments. W. W Brother Nivard and Brother Rembert pose happily before the shrine of Our Lady on the 25th anniversary of their entrance into the Holy Cross order. AJ Some of the many students who offered their Mass and Com munion in honor ofthe two Jubilarians. I :4 Father Murphy delivered the sermon expressing gratitude to the Brothers for the many years of service, Father Paten, the founder of the Family Rosary on Radio, takes time out to loin the brothers at lunch. A large number of students take advantage of the clay of recollection to receive communion. Brother John Boyle, who came to us in the second semester, teaches Religion I, IV and Algebra I. I4 Confession, another one of the Notre Dame student's spiritual advantages. Deceptive pass.ing and ball handling by the Crusader quarterback Mike Arnone was the decid- ing factor in the game. The first score came when Pat Butler fumbled on the Notre Dame 30 yd. line and Frank Pozsgai picked off the fumble and scampered into the end zone. Terry Supple was the big rock for the Knights defense, making more than half the tackles. The Cubs never passed the Knights 30 yard line, thanks to the alert secondary spirited by Kurt Wolfe. Runs of 79 yards by .lim Vuchsas and 67 yards by Dave Kopay highlighted the game. Alert safety Bob Bateman blocked a Loyola pass into the wait- ing arms of Tom May who scampered down the sidelines for the touchdown. G 'f Larry Gooch Jim Brooks Lacking the ability to gain ground in the clutch, the Knights played to a score- less tie with Pius X in their final Catholic League game of the year. The game marked Notre Dame's third tie, earlier they battled Serra and Cathedral to draws. Dave Kopay and Jim Vuchsas started the first march into the Warrior's territory only to have it stopped on the 7 yd. line. The next time the Knights got the ball they drove to the 15 yd. line only to fall one yard short of the first down. With only four minutes remaining the Knights moved from their 18 yd. line to the Warriors l8. With fourth down and three yds. to go, quarterback Bill Stifter dropped back to pass only to be smothered by the right side of the Pius line. This game left the Knights with a l-2-3 record in Catholic League play, which was a tie for fourth place. The fighting lrish once again outdid their opponents on the statistical chart but the potent Pilots were too much to handle. Notre Dame gained 362 yds. while Banning only had 3Ol, the Knights collected I8 first downs to the Pilots 12. Within the first 2 minutes of the game Terry Yamamoto scored 2 touchdowns. During the game he gained l50 yds. in 18 carries. The big gun for the Knights was. Dave Kopay who picked up lOl yards in l2 carries for an 8.5 average. Kopay set up the first tally by intercepting a Pilot pass. After successfully executing an onsides kick, the Knights marched to the Pilot's ll yd. line. Five plays later Kopay went over center for the tally. The loss gave Notre Dame a 3-3-3 record for the year. In the first game, against Burroughs, the Junior Knights met a fast moving, explosive offense. With a quick 20 points being scored against them, the J.V.'s never could completely recover. The highlight of the game, however, was undoubtedly Walter Newton's 60 yard run for a touchdown. The game ended 26-7. lHaIkyard, Reardon, Sartoris, Newton pictured below.i Anita 5.4. r,.f . The last league game of the year was played against Pius X and we still had a chance to come out on top of the league if we only could win today. With the backfield of Newton, Reardon, Halkyard, and Sartoris-and with a strong line, we felt ready. Very quickly we showed our superiority over a good Pius team. Rapidly we piled up the score because this was the biggest one yet. With the firing of the final gun, Notre Dame knew that at last we had won a championship in football. The Cross Country Season started with a thumping three way victory over Bur- bank, South Pasadena, and Beverly Hills, giving their new mentor, Mr. Engle, ca preview of things to come. Following closely on the heels of the initial triumph was a split tie and win over Glendale Hoover and Glendale High, respectively. Flushed with victory, the thin-clads ran over Cantwell in the first C.L. meet of the season. Sophomore Judd Iverson led the crew in this contest, as well as running a blistering 8:46 against Cathedral the following week. Fine performances were turned in by all, but the Spooks squeaked by in their closest meet of the season. St. Anthony was run out of Centinella Park when they met the Knights of the Valley, and the Mt. SAC Invitational proved a fine conditioner for the Loyola meet. The fastest times of the season were recorded on this day, as Notre Dame edged Loyola by 2 slim lO point margins. The morale was high when the team faced Piux X beneath the starters gun, but Pius was to emerge the victor as they cinched first place in the Catholic League, R. Buccola, E. Walker, W. Staf- ford, J. The Phantoms, taking advantage of a iittery Knight team, iumped off to a nine-point lead early in the game. By the end of the third quarter, however, the sharp shooting of Joe Borella and Dick Pian- tadosi had moved the Knights to within 5 points of the now spooked spooks. After Piantadosi tied the score at 51-51 with only 50 seconds left, the Phantoms came back. Moving down the floor, they shot once and missed. They took the rebound. The seconds moved quick- ly by as they waited to shoot again. They did . . . and missed! We took the rebound, and now it was our turn. For three quarters it looked like Notre Dame was going to hand St. Anthony their first Catho- lic league loss. But as the last quarter came to a close, the Saints, led by Tyrone Price, lumped to a seven point lead that seemed insurmount- able. Notre Dame didn't seem to be particularly upset about this development though, for iust before the buzzer sounded Bill Moser tossed in a lump shot that tied the score. The Knights held a two-point advantage in the overtime with lust eleven seconds to go when Price hit two free throws to tie it up again. The buzzer sounded for the second time, and the game was sent into a sudden death finish. After missing three quick shots, N.D. lost the ball to the Saints. At the end of the first round of the season, the Notre Dame Varsity is on its way to a successful year in the tough Catholic League. We have some very able boys in Rich Donovan, Dave Cross, Phil Capka, Tom May, Al Donato, and others. Mike Whaling, backed up by Dick Schaefer, is holding down the catcher's position, the infield is strong with Donovan at first, Tom Powley at second, Dan Whilhelm at third, and Leo Vusich at shortstop. The outfield is in good shape with Tom May, Mike Carr, and John Becker hauling down the fly-balls. We hope to see the team in first place at the end of the second round. Huckaby Moderator Since the first edition of the Knight was printed thirteen years ago, it has given the student-body praiseworthy news coverage and many hours of entertainment. By dividing this year's edition into six general parts, the staff has strived to provide articles of interest for every member of the school. The Carnival took precedence in the school news section for the first section, but it was soon overtaken by other school func- tions: the senior retreat, Knight of the issue, and new members of the faculty. News of the activities of various clubs and organizations is written by Mike Mirandi, Dennis Colby, Dan Bros- nan, and Robert Martineau. Such items as field trips, financial ventures, and results of proiects are also reported in this section, Organizations The section always turned to first, of course, is Knight Life. This fea- ture has provided many chuckles, and has become an indispensable part of every edition. Terry Guerin, Joe Di- Muro, Terry Supple, Jim Vuchsas, Ed Flynn, Bill DeRubertis, John Salzman, Gary Faris, Marlin Foxworth, and Bill O'ConneII have done a good iob re- porting the news in this section. fi EDITORS SEATED: Ted Hoff, Pete McAndrews, Dave McDonald. Besides performing a valuable service forthe school, the Knight gives its mem- bers valuable experience in the problems of the newspaper world. SQUIRES 1959-1960 SEASON During the basketball season, the Pep band pro- vided plenty of spirit at all the home games, cheering the players on and arousing enthusiasm among the spectators. The school dance band, the Squires, although not too active, played for some musical school events and assemblies. lt has given members of the band valuable experience for later life. ln all, the Notre Dame Band has lived up to its reputation of past years. From the beginning of the 1959-1960 season, the band has carried the Notre Dame spirit and name far and wide, bringing fame and renown to Notre Dame's portals, and incidentally, her trophy case also! At Christmas, the band put on its annual Christmas Concert, first for the Patrons' Club and then for the student body. Under the able direction of Brother Eugenio C.S.C., and the fine tutoring of Mr. Dominic Cifarelli, the Band played selections such as the beautiful Christmas Suite of Walters, the Toy Trumpet, and Leroy Anderson's Song of the Bells. No account of the Band would be complete without mentioning the band sponsored Snowball Dance fol- lowing the holidays.
