A - :,, ,f,1r 1 Brother Rembert Sorg, C.S.C. DEDICATIDN It is our glad fortune to acknowledge the efforts of two Brothers who zealously care for our school grounds. Many an unseen hour go into cutting grass, clipping shrubbery, and watering lawns and fields-the results of which are evidenced in the flowering beauty of our campus. With pleasure we honor these two faithful Holy Cross Brothers by dedi- cating The 1959 Arches to them. To 'MOM on 6 Om CA : OMF Brother Rembert was once corpmissioner for the religious houses on the campus at Notre Dame University. He was a familiar sight in his panel truck buzzing from house to house fulfilling the many wants of hundreds of religious at Notre Dame. Prior to this, he was stationed in Valatia, New York and Rolling Prairie, Indiana. At St. Ed- ward's University, Austin, Texas he was commis- sioner and supervisor of the student snack bar. Another school, Holy Cross, New Orleans utilized his talents in directing their cafeteria. Here at Notre Dame the beautiful grounds and flowers are his charge. Although seldom acknowledged we hope that this word of praise will be a fitting evidence of our appreciation. Brother Luke, a person of unusual wit, enlivens the community with his music on the zither, the iew's harp and the violin. His assignments have been as unusual as his interests. He has farmed at Watertown, Wisconsin and at St. Edward's Uni- versity, Austin, Texas. When a good prefect was needed to handle the study halls at the university he undertook that iob. For almost a score of years he was canvasser for the Ave Maria. At Notre Dame Brother Luke can be found limeing lines on the track, or riding the lawn mower or driving the ieep. We are indebted to him for all his efforts and for the splendid condition of our athletic fields. rw! P' if ,SVS it H! , ' ze W :,,gmq,,',fk u - f . . .. ., K. ! The latter involves a guidance program which is carried out through testing, interviews, and the scheduling of classes. The ultimate end is a wise, carefully selected program to be utilized later in one's profession. With good order there are associated some unappreciated iobs such as attendance and detention. The compiling of permanent student records and the keeping of school finances are also a part of administration. 41,0 Lf- 000 llslce-P, . However the primary aim, around which most of the others revolve, is the boosting of school spirit. This is accomplished in part by the presence of the band at pep rallies and at football and basketball games. High up on the list is the part that the band and glee club, by participation in parades and concerts, play in spreading the good name of Notre Dame High School. sf There are other less obvious, but also important functions, in which the Music Department engages. These include the helping-hand of our band to other schools in developing their own bands and the recently organized Introduction to Music course, all with the final purpose of bringing culture into our lives and glorifying God. Steve was a quiet, unassuming person who, no matter how he felt, was always cheerful. ln school Steve was recog- nized as a fine student and was respected by his classmates. Although his illness kept him from taking an active part in sports, he did enjoy dancing and Chi Rho activities. ln his untimely death, the seniors and faculty recog- nize the loss of a fine Catholic gentleman and friend. After taking a 12-0 lead on first half touchdowns by Merkle and Von der Ahe, the Knights were momentarily stunned by a 65 yd. return of a pass interception by an Indian safety man with only 3 seconds left in the half. The extra point attempt was wide and the Kills if 5 ,l e is Knights left the field at halftime leading 12-6. The Knights came back in the second half to blank the lndians and also scored once more themselves. N.D. Topples Saint Anthony in Homecoming Game The fine New Notre Dame football team defeated St. Anthony in this game by a score of 20-14. lt was our first win in history over the long Beach school. The win provided a very fitting climax to the traditional Homecoming Week. Halfback Mike Genne turned in his finest game as he stole the show by scoring two touchdowns and gaining over 140 yards rushing. Tackles Larry Deisinger and George Skalla sparked the Knight win with their excellent line play. After a scoreless first half, Saint Anthony's Marty Johnson made a 24 yd. touchdown run with a stolen ball. Notre Dame bounced back with a 64 yard run by Mike Genne, aided by a key block from Larry Diesinger. In the fourth quarter Dennis Monahan threw a 45 yd. touchdown pass to Genne. The Knights' last touchdown came on a 43 yd. run by Dave Kopay. The final score of the game was made when a Saint end grabbed a 24 yd. pass from quarterback Leo Sanchez. They had two things in mind when they left, keeping their win streak intact and paying back Serra for the pasting we received last year. When it was all over they had accomplished both, the second by a remarkable score of 40-6. The first half was a pretty tight battle with the score 7-6. But the team that came out of the dressing room in the second half began to play a type of football the likes of which has never been seen at Notre Dame and in doing this they proceeded to roll up 33 more pts. while Serra could not cross the goal line again. This was typical of the type of game this team was capable of all season long if they did -not let down in the crucial moments. The line play was truly superb, and backed un with a backfield that had a scoring punch this team could not be denied that night. It was played a very happy team that walked off the field that night after the game, and iustly so, football the way evervone had been waiting for. But this drive was finally stopped by the Pius line deep in their territory. Theni late in the third quarter the Knights began to move. After recovering'a fumble on the Pius 38, Notre Dame went down to the goal from ,where Monahan crashed in to score, but the play was nullified by an offsides penalty. Following the ensuing punt by Pius, Notre Dame powered their way to the Pius 9 where they fumbled. But again Pius was forced to punt and Notre Dame took over on their own 46. After making a first down on the Pius 43, the Knights pulled the game out of the fire when end, Danny Vallas, cut behind the secondary and caught Monahan's pass and scampered for 20 yards and a score. Jim Woodyard kicked the extra point and Notre Dame won the game 7-0. c. I QW -mi? During the practice season and on through the league there were some very bright moments enioyed by the team. Outstanding players on this year's squad were seniors Bruce Luedtke, Steve Cordova, Co-captains Sam Lindsay and Mike Jezik, and sophomores Joe Borella and Bud Lawrence. The 0'Neil-men got off to a fairly good start in the practice season. After losing to Verdugo Hills, they looked very promising in their overwhelming win over Burbank. At this point things were looking optimistic. The Knights' next win, however, was preceded by five losses, finally beating John Bur- roughs in the first game of the Burbank tournament. Joe Borella made the all-tournament team. Finally the Knight quintet ended a gloomy practice season by making a road trip to San Bernardino to play the first annual San Bernardino tournament. After beating Ramona, a team which went to the finals of the C.I.F. playoffs, the N.D. cage squad was eliminated in the second found. In the Catholic league it was almost the same story. After losing to Pius X, a close game to arch-rival Loyola, and to Mt. Carmel, the Blue and Gold, led by the fine shooting of Bruce Luedtke, beat Cantwell 58 to 44. Following this initial win, Notre Dame ended up on the short end of many a close Catholic league contest, losing to St, Anthony, Serra, Cathedral, Pius X, Loyola, and Mt. Carmel before winning their second and final game, defeat- ing Cantwell once again. The Faculty and students of Notre Dame wish the best of luck to the gradu- ating senior members of the team: Bob Wilhelm, Bruce Luedtke, John Murrin, Denny Monahan, Ed Belleuo, Dave Jackson, Mike Jezik, Sam Lindsay, Steve Cordova and Tom Von Der Aheg and looks forward next year to the fine play of: Mike Kinney, Bill Moser, Bud Lawrence and Joe Borella. SECOND ROW, left to Right: Coach Leeds M Purdy, P. Buccola, R. Corbett. The 1958-59 Cross Country Team had a pretty successful season winning three meets and losing three. They might have done better had not some of the members had to drop out at the crucial periods during the season, because of iniury or sickness. The team'was led by captain Dave James who stood out all season, as the greatest distance runner ever produced at Notre Dame High School. He broke the C.l.F. record for 'l.8 miles with a tremendous 8:35 clocking. His teammates Kym Woolston, Ted Hoff, R. Buccola, and Mike Makin also stood out during most of the season. The biggest surprise of the season was a freshman named Judd Iverson, who was No. 4 on the team during the latter part of the season and was good enough to earn a varsity letter in his first year of competition. Then for the first time in history they won the opening league game against St. Anthony's. They then went to to put down their next five opponents in order. The team seems destined to go on winning games not only this year but also in the years to come. Much of the credit is due to Coach Spindola. He has molded almost the same team that has had a poor record for the last three years into a championship team. Led by Jack Bussie, Bruce Luedtke, Ken LaPointe, Captain Danny Vallas, Bob Heigert, Joe Buttitta, Denny Prendergast, Gary Angello, George Lohman, Jerry Kreske, and Dennis Monahan, the Knights are in second place, as we go to press, and with two games yet to be played, the team boasts an 8-4 record.
