This was the excitement felt by a Knight who strove to impress his lady fair. To win her hand he must prove his skill and courage at jousting in the tournament. Today the Notre Dame Knight who takes an active part in competitive activities and school functions is developing an amiable per- sonality as well as proving his worth. T Introduction . . . .... One of the most amiable and sincere persons at Notre Dame High School is Mrs. Kane, the school secretary. Mrs. Kane unselfishly gives of her time to answer telephones, listen to absentee excuses and put up with the general activity that goes on in school. Mrs. Kane is a versatile person who enjoys swimming, gardening and dancing. She is an active church worker at St. Francis De Sales Parish and was a former president of its Altar Society. In appreciation for your kind service to Notre Dame, the students and faculty wish to dedicate to you the 1958 Arches. Bob Apodaca .iifn eel ,ff S , 11 31 As in the days of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, representatives of the Stu- dent Body meet to determine cooperatively with the faculty those actions which affect the whole student body. IN OBSERVANCE OF: Although the Notre Dame of San Fernando Valley has barely ten years of history behind it, this year the religious institute which has been responsible for making that name known throughout the world, observes the centenary of apostolic approbation of its rules and con- stitutions. NH' H sp YA V H A 5 x lf57ilQ2f - 'V Aside from his armor, a Knight's greatest pride was his horse. In many cases his life depended on the training of his steed. Today the modern Knight is not in such a pressing situation, but one has to admit that without his automobile he would be greatly handi- capped. As the Knight of Old spent many hours in grooming, feeding and giving tender to his mount, we see today's Knight polishing, modifying and test- ing his car. All these things build a monument of self accomplishment and give him something to be proud of. N. Q, 'R 1, 1 J 1' JAMES G. AARON ALAN C. HER ,I The squire was an apprentice to the knight and he eagerly awaited a chance to show his skill. He prac- ticed untiringly with the sandbag quintain and often the taunts of his master spurred him on. Our juniors can be compared to these squires in the way they respond- ed to a jest made by Brother Charles that He would eat his hat if they collected 375 in their mission drive. They not only reached their goal but collected a total of 35175, and Brother was forced to eat his hat. CPhoto by Ted Hoffj Schugel smashes through a Mt. Carmel Crusader. fPhot0 by Rex Taylorj Nodine leads the team to battle with Cathe- dral. CPhoto by Ted Hoffj Merkle breaks javurek away for a big gain against Loyola. The team that Notre Dame fielded in 1957 will not go down in history as the best we have ever had. In fact it may be called the worst. Certainly their record of failing to win a single game could not be topped, but in spite of their record they have gained the admiration of the faculty and student body by their never say die spirit, courage and determination. Keeping up the spirit game after game was in itself a truly remarkable feat and will not be forgotten. They started their exhibition season with a heartbreaking loss in the last two min- utes of play to a heavily favored Burroughs team, 7 to 6. They next came up against a big, fast, experienced Oxnard team. The Knights had things completely their own way for most of the first half but late in the second half the superior Oxnard man- power finally wore them down and brought about their defeat. The Knights opened the league season against the perenial Catholic League cham- pion, Mount Carmel, who was destined to go undefeated in Catholic League play, and win the championship. The Knights outplayed their rivals in every respect but again the breaks were against the Knights and after having victory in their grasp they lost on a last minute touchdown, 21 to 14. No other team in the league held the Cru- saders by so close a margin. The Irish then took on Loyola. The student body especially looked forward to the game with arch-rival, Loyola, as it was to be the homecoming. An unexpected storm rained out the festivities and threatened the game. It was actually cancelled and then after a protest from Loyola, scheduled again. The see-saw battle was waged on our home field which was made a quagmire by the rains. For a full 48 minutes they slushed back and fortn through the mud with the final nod going to Loyola, 12 to 7. The Queen and her court were honored the following night at the dance and it was the consensus of opinion that it was the lovliest court we have ever had. The Knights were in bad shape as they journeyed to Cantwell to do battle with the Cardinals. The Asiatic flu had claimed many a victim and they were riddled with injuries. It was hotly contested all the way and in spite of their handicaps the Knights had a good chance to pull this one out. The superior Cantwell manpower showed up toward the end of the game and they managed to eke out a narrow 19 to 14 victory. The roof really fell in on the Knights at Saint Anthony's. The flu riddled Irish fighting all the way, went down to a crushing defeat at the powerful Saints. It was simply another case of overwhelming odds for the spirited Knights. The Knights hosted Cathedral on their own field, and I would say, this was the only time the Knights played listless football. The Notre Dame Knights seemed to have other things on their minds besides a football game. The Phantoms took com- plete advantage and grounded out a 26 to 14 victory. Serra was strictly a black day for the Knights as the experienced Cavaliers grounded out a one-sided victory. The classy Cavaliers capitalized on all the breaks and the mis- takes made by the Irish. For the last game of the season the Knights journeyed away from home to meet an inspired Warrior team from Pius X. This was the battle of the two luckless teams of the Catholic League. This would be the game which decide who would sit in the cellar. This game impressed me as being the hardest fought of all. Pius led all the way, but the Knights were in the contest until the last few minutes when Pius got three quick touchdowns and went on to humble the Knights. Although the Notre Dame Knights had a bleak season, they were not without their moments of glory and their heroes. It will be hard to forget the scampering runs of our Captain, Denny Nodine, or the bruising runs of Ernie Schugel and Tony Kopay. Little Ray Wolfe, the watch-charmed mainstay of our defense, will also be remembered as well as all the other members of our spirited team. They have contri- buted to the name of Notre Dame and the student body is proud to associate with them, The Fighting Irish of 1957. N , www ,M 6 JK, .31 2 F' -Ka. L 1 Qi Bl K The Knights' basketball team for '58 was not exactly favored to burn up the league. With only two lettermen returning, Coach O'Neil could not be expected to match last year's team, which had two all C.I.F. stars. The Knights had to start practically from scratch, and with Coach O'Neil's expert training they have de- veloped into a smooth coordinated unit. They went through their exhibition season without much success. They managed to collect one win against heavily favored Oxnard. The Knights had weathered the exhibition season and had gained experi- ence and confidence, and were beginning to work like a team. Notre Dame did not exactly make an auspicious entrance into league compe- tition, for they were soundly beaten by Loyola, but the Knights had a potential scoring threat in Hank Salvatore. He was scoring from 15 to 25 points per game. Hank ended the season with a 15-point average. On the first round of league play, the Knights became seasoned campaigners as they got most of the bumps-from Cathedral, St. Anthony, Cantwell and Mt. Carmel. In all these games the Knights fought bravely and their opponents knew that they had played a hard fought game. The first half of the season was not altogether black for old Notre Dame. They collected their first wins of the season from Serra and Pius by scores of 51 to 50 and 55 to 40. In these games Salvatore, Moder, Boyd and Flanagan really showed their abilities. The Knights weren't exactly on cloud nine as they prepared for the second half of the season, but they had determination and confidence that they could do better. The second half of the season was a repetition of the first. Although the Knights had improved, they just didn't get the breaks and on other occasions they just weren't as hot as they should have been. Salvatore gained over 20 points on several occasions and Flanagan boosted the spirits with some clutch shooting, especially against Serra. On the whole, the combined play of the Knights was not quite up to their capabilities. They looked like the Knights of old as they humbled Pius and Serra exactly in the same easy manner that they had done earlier. They had done their best, but wound up sixth in the league. Although the '58 basketball team will not be remembered as having the winning- est season in the school's history, they will be remembered for their determination and fighting spirit. Each and every member of the team brought honor and glory to the school every time they were in action, and the school can be proud of them. Gone will be the nucleus of this team! Captain Mike Boyd, Steve Moder, Joe Flana- gan and also Hank Salvatore, who is ineligible to play next year. Coach O'Neil with his usual mastery should develop a fine team next year, as he will have several lettermen returning. Congratulations to this year's spirited team! MID APRIL TABULATION With eight league games still remaining for the baseball season, the Notre Dame Varsity Baseball Team has at present compiled a record of 2 wins, 3 losses and a tie. Yet, this record does not clearly indicate the ability of this baseball squad which consists mainly of juniors. The team possesses two of the finest hurlers in the league in Gordon Goosen and Roger Willett. Gordon has now pitched 19 innings allowing but one hit. Roger who also alternates at first base, pitched 13 innings against Loyola, holding them to four hits and a tie for the game. Barry Carpenter, Rich Donovan and Bob Apodaca round out the pitching staff. The infield is very ably handled by Frank Major as catcher, Jackie Bussie at first, Denny Monahan at second, Bob Hiegert at shortstop, and Danny Vallas at third. Two fme understudies at catcher and shortstop are George Lohman and Bruce Luedke. In the outfield are two '57 All Catholics, Wayne Boyte and Ken LaPointe cover- ing left and center with Gary Angello in right. Duke McMahon is also a fine ou'- fielder. The team has tremendous po- tential and has high hopes of winning the Catholic League Championship. It has several athletes capable of scoring individual championship records. Notre Dame's first two contests were lost to Bur- roughs and Burbank. Then came St. Francis, the per- ennial champ of the Catholic conference and we lit- erally crushed them. The Knights opened their league season at Serra and had a pretty easy time of it as we won handily with a score of 68-36. The Irish next garnered a win that they are especially proud of. In a surprise meet with Van Nuys, we beat them 63-41 which proves that the Knights can challenge the best that the Valley can offer and come out on top. At the next track meet the Knights encountered Cantwell on our track which was like a quagmire from the deluge of rains, and slaughtered them 89-15. The Cathedral and Pius X meets were rained out but the team journeyed to Santa. Barbara and took a very creditable Seventh Place among 25 schools competing which were among the best in the C.I.F. The Notre Dame thinly clads then entertained Mount Carmel at home and it was another romp for the pow- erful Knights who rolled over the Crusaders 79-25. With only Cathedral, Loyola, Pius X and St. Anthonys to go, it is expected that the Knights will go all the way. The team will almost certainly be recognized as the best team in any sport that Notre Dame has ever had. There are only twelve seniors on the team, so it looks as though the Notre Dame track team will be powerful next year. Leaving us this year will be Ray Wolfe and Gary Edwards in sprints, Stan jones and Tom Souza in the hurdles, Steve Moder in the 880, john Aussem, Hugh Johnson and Tony Kopay in the pole vault, and Mike Boyd and Marty Vusich in the high jump. These lads can be especially proud of their accomplishments and of their part in team spirit. Both the student body and the faculty are proud of them. Next year's team has excellent possibilities and with expert tutoring of our esteemed coach, Bill Leeds, the team is almost certain to have another winning season. Gary Edwards l. The paper provides wholesome features, news items of campus activities, and entertaining humor-all compiled under the watchful eyes of Brother John and Mr. Douglas Stewart. If the success of The Knight be measured by its acceptance among the students, it would rate tops. The students always look forward to our action packed paper. The hopes of making the 1957-58 season one of t e most successful were fulfilled. The Band started the year with halftime shows at the football games, under the leadership of Drum Major Michael McGreevy. Then followed the basketball assemblies and games, parades and the Christmas concert. The Christmas concert and the Annual Spring Concert were the peak of the season, and of course, this year the band had the distinguished honor of playing three selections from Paul Weston's Crescent City Suite : Creole Songs and Dances , Lucy',, and Ferryboat to Algiers, under the direction of the composer himself. Shortly after the concert, the band played with nine other high school bands in a massed band tribute to Our Lady at Mary's Hour in the Los Angeles Coliseum. A list of parades attended include 111 Arcadia, f2j Star of Bethlehem , GQ Orange Show, MQ Festival of Nations, f5j Maytime Band Review , 16, Reseda Festival, and Q71 San Fernando Annual Fiesta parade. The band also played for the Knights of Columbus meeting and the annual Diocesan Music Festival at Mount St. Mary's. The Squires Dance Band also had a successful year, playing for several school and parish dances. Our sincerest gratitude to the seniors in the band who helped make this year the success it was!
