It is here that we have proven or not proven ourselves to be good salesmen of moral character, good sportsmanship, and overwhelming enthusiasm. Z X x r 1 A X F my in -as 0 ex LJ is :O . 5 Miki' 1 if P A ' if-Wifi :Gd ,, . 0' ymwe From the first minute of practice to the last whistle of the Cathedral game there was found at Notre Dame High School a spirit prevalent only with the existence of a fine football team. The Fighting Irish as they are affectionately called was in every sense of the word a really good bal Iclub. They had every- thing a top flight team needs: speedy backs, a hard charging line, elusive ends, brilliant field leadership, and a fine coaching staff. What that team did is now history and every one connected with N. D. is proud of them. They were one of the finest of Notre Dame football teams. The first two games found the Irish up against strong experienced teams, Oxnard and Santa Bar- bara. The team gained valuable experience in both these contests, experience that proved extremely useful when we ran into difficulty because of iniuries in the middle of the season. Going into our first league tilt we faced powerful Mt. Carmel. Carmel's line averaged 2l5 pounds. Compared to N. D. with an average of 175 pounds, Carmel was the unanimous favorite, but as the game progressed the little Irish were pushing the favorites all over the field. For the first half at least, the biggest upset of the season was in the making with the score, N. D. 6, Carmel 0. But in the second half the Carmel Giants finally wore the Irish out and they scored two quick touchdowns and won, I2-6. ln this game N. D. proved themselves a team to be reckoned with. Then came Cantwell, and a fellow by the name of Tenk led the Irish to victory by virtue of two unbelieveable runs of 60 and 40 yards, for two T. D.'s giving N. D. a thrilling 20 to I9 victory. Next came Loyola. Never before in the history of the school had a Notre Dame team defeated a Loyola football team. All week long the team and the student body looked forward to this battle of arch rivals. The place was Rancho LaCienega. The kick-off was taken by Loyola and after one play they fumbled. Then on the first N. D. play from scrimmage Luecke gave the ball to Tenk and the game was all over-sixty yards and T. D., the first of three for Tenk, the first of five for Notre Dame, the first victory of N. D. over Loyola. This victory more than any other was enioyed by the students of Notre Dame. The following week Notre Dame celebrated its Homecoming, and Pius X found itself hopelessly out- classed as the Irish won 26-6. At the half all eyes were on the four lovely Homecoming Princesses and Queen, Pat Pinto. Then came Serra. Much could be said about this the only poor game the Irish played all year. There were iniuries, and there were mistakes, but most of all there was an inspired opponent who took advantage of our lack of spirit to score an upset victory. The next opponent of N. D. was St. Anthonys, our cousins from Long Beach. This game started out as a repeat of the Serra black Friday. Riddled with iniuries the Irish found themselves trailing by an overpowering score of 26-0. Then with less than six minutes left to play the Fighting lrish earned their name. The air was filled with footballs and flying cleats. As the gun sounded one of the smallest men on the field, Denny Nodine, had scored 20 points by way of three touchdowns and three points after. Even as the gun sounded the Irish were fighting for the ball as victory was still within their reach. The last home game of the season found the two luckless teams of the league, Notre Dame and Cathedral, fighting it out. With one regular back still operating the Irish had victory in their grasp. Then two fumbles were picked off by Cathedral backs and turned into touchdowns which spelled defeat for the Irish of Notre Dame. The are many other things to be mentioned about this football season, the Rich Marrone catches and the consistent Gary Gierok tackles, and the fight of the rest of the squad, all outstanding in their respec- tive iobs on the gridiron. Post season honors were generously bestowed on the Knights of Notre Dame. Four first string All Catholic players, two second string All Catholic and one Honorable Mention. But most of all the team proved that the spirit of Notre Dame is present at Notre Dame High School, and that i956 will be remembered as the beginning of the title of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. 75 Mike Arlotto Tackle George Barry Halfbock Ughll John De Cosier End .K ' Ron De Lamore Center Tony Fudale A Guard Delfmmdvmlcfon . . Throughout the year they truly exhibited the Spirit of Notre Dame. Paced by Tony Salas and Bill Gregory, two of the best basketball players in Southern California, the Knights ended the season with a very good record of 25 wins and 5 losses. The season's opener saw us romp over a good Van Nuys team 87-63. ln the next game an over- confident Knight team fell to a surprisingly good North Hollywood five 64-48. From this time until the final game of the Mt. Carmel Tournament the team ran up nine straight wins. These included victories over such powerful teams as Oxnard, one of the top ranked teams in the C.l.F. and Ventura League, by a score of 71-59, and John Burroughs, Foothill League Champion, 58-52. After easily winning the first three games played in the Mt. Carmel Tournament, the Knights lost in the finals to Mt. Carmel 57-55. The Knights entered the Burbank Tournament next and after three hard fought games emerged as Tournament Champions. This was the first tournament that o Notre Dame team has won. lt was prob- ably the high point of the year for the team. In the first game, we swept by John Muir 72-52. ln the second we again edged Burroughs, this time by a score of 52-46, and in the finals we overcame a 15 point deficit to win 47-41. We entered the Beverly Hills tournament as favorites, and after winner our first game easily, fell unexpectedly to Torrance. lt was in this game that the incident occurred that lost for our team the chance to go to the C.l.F. Playoffs. The beginning of league play found us facing a powerful St, Anthony squad. The tremendous shooting percentage of the Saints spelled doom for us, as we lost 80-52. We then ran up three more wins in a row as we defeated Serra 56-44, Loyola 58-52, and Cantwell 66-54. Then came Mt. Carmel and the Crusaders pulled away at the end to gain a hard fought victory. The Knights refused to give up, and were simply outplayed. We finished the first round with victories over Pius X, 67-59, and Cathedral 66-45. The first game of the second round saw us gaining revenge for our earlier loss to St. Anthony as we defeated them 61-51. We then defeated Serra 75-52, Loyola, for the eighth straight time, 61-58, and Cantwell too fell before the Knight aggregation 78-55. The Knights hoping that the third time would be their charm faced Mt. Carmel again and for awhile it looked as if they might win, as they led at one point in the game by 10 points. But the Crusaders caught the Knights and as we slowly began to fall apart they pulled away to win 63-50. ln the last two games the Knights showed their opponents no mercy as they thrashed Pius X 70-45, and Cathedral 80-69. ln the Pius X game Gregory garnered 30 points, and Salas got 32 against Cathedral. The Arches wishes to congratulate Coach John O'NeiI and his fine team on the wonderful iob they did in bringing glory to Notre Dame Hi. lt also hopes that Seniors Tony Salas, Bill Gregory, Mike Walls, Ernie Pursley, Bob Wunsch, Roger Brennan, Jim Schmiederer, Joe Wetter, Walt Griffen, and Pat Johnson will have as much success in whatever they choose to do next year as they had with the Notre Dame Basketball team this year. The first eight games although non-league were won quite handily by our fighting team. This is a new record of consecutive wins for any baseball team at our school-the old one being five. The team has also topped past squads with total number of wins-the past sum was ten. This year's group of ball players numbers four seniors, nine iuniors, and nine soph- omores. Soph Gary Angello filled the left field position well, with Roger Culver, a iunior and JV letterman of last year ably backing him up. Kenny laPointe, gi sophomore, played center field with soph JV letterman George Lohman pushing hard for this spot. In right field was iunior Wayne Boyte, a JV letterman and a good hitter. The infield showed soph Dan Vallas at third, a JV letterman and an all around good ball player. Among our other players were: soph JV letterman Bruce Luedtke, another third baseman, shortstop senior Rich Marrone, a letterman of two years and co-captain, a fine hitter and fielder, Bob Hiegert, a sophomore, a good prospect for this spot next year, JV letterman and soph Dennis Monahan, our qualified second baseman, and his understudy, soph Bob Wilhelm. At first base we see returning from last year's varsity, iunior Roger Willett. JV letterman Ed Harms, a iunior also, played this position when Willett was pitching. Two year let- terman, senior, and co-captain Dennis Borowsky was back for his third year behind the plate. Gabe Boury, another senior, also looked good at this position. The pitching staff consisted of eight chuckers and featured soph Jack Bussie. Willett also did very well. Junior Barry Carpenter fashioned a neat two hitter against Pius. JV letterman and iunior Gordon Goossen was a fine relief pitcher and iuniors John Rougeot, Bob Apodaca, and JV letterman Frank Fese also showed promise and will return next year and finally yours truly, JV letterman and senior Norm West. B L 4 H yi' I02 Notre Dame Track Meet in Visio Vision. Falck, Javurek, Barry . . . the terrible trio of sprinters. T R A C K LEAGUE CHAMPS Notre Dame Track Men captured the first maior sport League Crown ever won by a Notre Dame team. The league season started out with the team in high hopes for we showed much promise. Our first meet saw us facing a slightly favored and very powerful St. Anthony's team. The contest was tight all the way with the meet going to the winner of the relay. We won that relay thanks to an outstanding last leg run by Mike Tenk. Next we met Cantwell, whom we downed with comparitive ease. The following week saw us go against our arch rival, Loyola, whom we had never beaten in ten consecutive years of track. The meet was anybody's guess as both teams were powerful. Half way through the meet we were behind by a good margin, but a sweep by Barry, Javurek and Tenk in the 220, and a first and third by Phelan and luecke in the mile brought us up even. lt now rested on the relay. We were behind up to the fourth leg but Tenk solved our problems by running a 21.2 and winning the meet. In gratitude the chapel was iam-packed after the meet. Pius was our next contender, and our winning streak held as we downed the Warriors on their own track. Serra came to N. D. to try their luck against our undefeated squad. They were unsuccessful as we romped to another win. Dick Falck ran 10.2 winning the hundred. This was Dick's first league meet due to an iniury. On Tuesday, April 16, we met our first defeat on the track of Cathedral High. Most of our performances were not up to par with the exception of Phelan who ran 4:38, to win the mile and break the school record. luecke was second with 4:41. We now faced Mt. Carmel for our last league meet of the season. Inspired performances in the sprints were evident as Barry ran a dazzling 10 flat to capture the school record in the hundred. Javurek and Susca ran a close second and third. We swept the 220 inlthe same A ux order. Of course we went on to win the ll '- meet gaining a record of o wins and 1 loss which gave us the League Champion- vi ship along with St. Anthony and Cathed- r I an , af? G . Needless to say none of this could have . f been accomplished without the best coach- ing available given of course by Coach Bill Leeds. There were plenty of tough spots that we could never have gotten out of without his inspiration and know- ' how . He indeed is the League Champion , and the track team thanks him from the bottom of their hearts. JOHNNY STRAHL 1, 103 an , J, . , I ,. ,, i iili i - i f-5-', Phelan breaks the tape against Loyola.
