Whether you have been able to con- tribute successfully or not, depends on the amount you have to give and the enthusiasm with which you have given it. Achievement of any sort essentially means giving-giving of oneself Whole-heartedly, Without reserve. To those Seniors Who have achieved, Congradulations and Best Wishes, you have started life on the right foot. Notre Dame has provided you with a set of Christian principles and has established a climate in which these prin- ciples could grow and become part of you, active in your own minds and hearts. Notre Dames contribution can be measured only in.terms of what you have given, be it large or small, she will return it a hundredfold. Pope Pius Xl defined Catholic Action as the participation of the laity in the Apos- tolate of the Hierarchy. This is what the Young Christian Students at Notre Dame are attempting to do. There are four groups of Y. C. S. at Notre Dame-one for each class. These groups are headed by Dick Anderson, senior, lim Conway, junior, Ernie Schugel, sophomore, and Bud Meyers, freshman. Brother Ricardo, C. S. C., is faculty moderator. Group meet- ings are held Weekly and general meetings on occasion. Y. C. S. representatives attend certain Archdiocesan activities. The purpose of Y. C. S. is to better ourselves and to further the betterment of others in our surroundings. Pius Xl said, All must cooperate in Catholic Action, even if they do so only to a small degree. Work and a desire to strive for self-improvement are necessary to be a good Young Christian Student. L4-L-..-, ' Q ll. to r.l First Row: K. Kan-iinski, R. Casey A. White. V. Fadale, B. Szfmlwz' Gamma! By I ack Irwin With the commencement of the fall term last September, the three Student Body Officers who had been chosen by the student vote in a spirited election last lune, took office. They were: Randy Wenker, President, lohn Miscione, Vice-president, lack lrwin, Secretary. Sitting with them and completing the Student Council were the respective heads of the different school organizations. Under their leadership an enlarged program for the betterment of the school and the interest and enjoyment of the students was undertaken. Many things were accomplished by the Student Council this year. The Council con- tinued in the practice of saying the Rosary in the Brothers' Chapel and authorized the collection of class dues. The Council also helped to organize new cheer leaders. ln addi- tion, the first Talent Assembly was held this year, a Pep Club was formed, corres- pondence about various events was exchanged with other schools for the betterment of interschool relations. Finally, an intramural program was organized and Pep assemblies were held under the auspices of the Council. So that the students might be fully informed, the practice of posting the minutes of the Council's meetings on the Bulletin Board, was established. The members of the Student Council are deeply grateful to their fellow students for the confidence placed in them and thank them for their cooperation in all that was undertaken. Any accomplishments of the council were due entirely to the great spirit of the Knights of Notre Dame. 1-my . '-15?- '. - ,ezvvggw . N 3 BY Isrrv Cellner With the blowing of a whistle and the twirling of a baton, The Notre Dame High School lgaigdcstarted the '55 and '56 year under the guidance of our able Director, Brother Eugenio, The Band was in full swing with the kick-off of the football season, playing marches and performing halftime stunts to the delight of the many fans. From the marching on the gridiron, the Band switched to marching in the All Western Band Preview at Long Beach, in which 75 bands from five western states participated. A year ago, Notre Dame's Band won the plague for music. This parade was followed by the Burbank on Parade celebration. The next event was an invitation to give a concert at Disneyland's first annual Christmas Festival. After the concert all the band members were given complimentary tickets with which to enjoy the gaities at this wonderland. The Band was also presented with a, beautiful plague signed by Walt Disney in appreciation of our performance. Aside from the concerts and parades, our thoughts turn to the social side and the Squires Band, the school dance band organized a year ago. This group chosen from the main body of players established a reputation for themselves and Notre Dame High, by playing for school dances as well as many Chirho and parish club dances. The high point of the year came when they were asked by the Knights of Columbus to entertain at the annual Commun- ion Breakfast at the Biltmore Bowl, at which His Eminence, Cardinal Mclntyre, was the honored guest. After Easter, the Pep Band was invited to play for a benefit Boxing Match at the Holly- wood Legion Stadium for St. Ioseph's Hospital. This was followed by the annual Archdiocesan Music Festival held at Mount St. Mary's College at which Notre Dame High School's Band took top honors for concert work. Next day, the marching band participated in the Pan-American Day parade in Lakewood and won the Second Place Trophy. The year continued to a close with parades scheduled for National City, The Maytime Band Review, San F ernando's Annual Fiesta Parade, and Notre Dame's Annual Spring Concert May 26 and 27. v -.7 4gglr'v:: f'.. , A ,l 1 4 'JI Qs. S. C.. moderator: Dick Anderson, c:ss't. editor: Larry Barr. editor. 7lze Kndyfzf By Larry Barr On October 28, l955, something new came to the Notre Dame campus. For it was on that day that the first edition of The Knight for the l955-56 school year was distributed to the Notre Dame student body. What was so unique about the occasion though? The Knight, as the official N. D. student publication, had been published and distributed every year since the school first opened its doors. For several years it had been a mimeographed sheet, and for the past two years it had been a printed two or four page newspaper. As the school grew, the size and guality of the student publication also grew. lt was this factor, the swift increase in enrollment, that brought about the something new. F or when The Knight was passed out on that October Friday, the students received not a four or six-page newspaper, but a new twenty-page magazine. The staff of The Knight was hopeful that the students would like the magazine, and from every indica- tion, they had no reason to be disappointed. The first edition had a football scene, showing a night game in action under Notre Dames new lights, on its cover. lnside was the usual news on school activities, but with much wider and more adequate coverage. And there was more sports news than ever before, for it has been the policy of the staff to devote approximately one-third of the magazine to Notre Dames athletic activities. . Organized for but two years, the group has been admitted into the Catholic Forensic League of Los Angeles, CBrother lohn CSC was elected League Presidentl, into the South- ern California Debate League, and, just recently, the National Forensic League. The N.F.L. is a national honor society of outstandillq l'liCJl1 SCl'1OO1 SPGGCTI STUCl9T1TS- This YQCIT. the Club has taken first place in debating at the LOYOlU UUiV9TSilY TOUTUUTUQUTI and has won the sweepstakes trophy in a contest held here at Notre Dame. ln the field of debate, both novices and veterans have taken first, second, or third places at tourneys. lim Conway and lay Whitney were one of the more successful teams and in one of their first tournaments at Loyola U., they took first place. Pat Boylan and lerry Cellner, Pat Bossi and Mark Villarino won third place in the same contest, and, lohn l-leaphy and Dan Baedeker, Alex Bryant and Leo Whitaker placed during the year. Novices lim Corley, Paul l-leaphy and lim Brosnan, Martin Cordon, lerry l-lewitt and Mike Collins went through undefeated at a tournament here at Notre Dame. Cn February 23, the speech club demonstrated for the Patrons Club the various facets of lndividual Events, with lay Whitney, who won first at U.S.C., demonstrating extemporaneous speaking, Alex Bryant, who took first at an American Legion Cratorical Contest, giving a sample of original oratory, Pat Boylan, winning second at Notre Dame, giving an example of impromptu speaking, Bob Colonna, who took second at Notre Dame, rendering a sample of humorous speaking, while, Mike McGiveney, winner of first place at Loyola U, demonstrated dramatic interpretation. So what does this benefit them? Well, for one thing, they learn through practice how to speak before an audience, to see fairly both sides of a question, to reason accuratelyf to learn the value of someone else's opinion. These and all the other benefits helpful in later life make public speaking more than worth-while. ll. to r. Iohn Nownes, Tony Regan, Brian Ward, Ted Dudley, Pat Flaherty, Lee Hotz. Paul Deisinger. The Patrons Club is an organization composed of the fathers and mothers of Notre Dame students. The purpose of the organization is to provide the parents with an opportunity to discuss problems with teachers and with other parents toward the benefit of their son and Notre Dame in general. The Patrons Club also conducts many financial ventures that provide funds for co-curricular activities at Notre Dame. The Club.with a large, active member- ship, well directed by their officers, has an enviable record in putting-over many enterprises. Among these are: the erection of the bleachers on the football field, build- ing of the hand-ball courts, the spring project of donations on a carp and finally, their fun campaigns such as the dance pic- tured on the opposite page. The faculty and Notre Dame students are very grate- ful to these fathers and mothers who have Worked so hard for Notre Dame. THE FIRING LINE Parents interview the Brothers about Dennis ' school work. Although statis- tically not a successful year, with a record of C3-75, this team WCIS COI1Sidered by all to be the best club Notre Dame ever fielded. At our first home game under the lights, a powerful Cantwell team beat us 25-8 with the fast improving Knights coming to life in the last quarter. With our fourth loss in as many starts, the Knights dropped a close one to Serra l3-6. The second half of this game belonged to Notre Dame, however, and the Knights almost took it. At last, against Pius X, N. D. hit pay-dirt winning in a poorly contested game 27-Up and then, in the heartbreak of the year, Notre Dame lOSt in the last minutes of play 21-13, to Loyola, Against St, Anthony, CLF, semi-finalists, only a case of the fumbles kept us from defeating the heavily favored Saints' The Kmqhts knocked over favored Cathedral in their next encounter at the jamTf19Cl lOUCk9d l1OII19COTfliUQ QGITIG- The SCOT9 woe 12-7. This yearls team was tlanked by a pair ot excel- elnt blockers, lim Bussel and Gene Cassidy, who consistently opened ott tackle slants, and lohn Knight who ably handled the defensive chores. At the tackle spots we used Clitt ClGran, Mike Phelan and Bill Thompson who always showed a desire to make up tor their inexperience. At guard: Bandy Wenker, Al l-larrutt, Pat Carroll and lerry Donckels, voted this year's Most Valuable Player, although out-weighed, they were never out-tought. Vieing tor starting center this year were Art Taylor and lim Burnett. Cur halt- back positions were handled by Bay Stettanus, Larry Kane and Bob Dunlap who each had their share ot sparkling nights. lohn Miscione and Bick DeSantis, though hampered by injuries, stepped into play at crucial moments giving a tine account of themselves. Art Thompson, Pat Flaherty and Steve Krause did not chalk-up muchxplaying time but did give treely ot their time to help the team. Rumors, wishful-thinking, and heated discussions have been in the air for the past several years- When are We going to get lights for the football field? Well, it is no longer a rumor or wishful-thinking, the football lights are actually in the air. Eight steel fingers have skirted the Notre Dame gridiron since last fall. There is no doubt about it, we have the best lighted field in Southern California. For this new light that penetrates the blackness of Sherman Oaks, We are indebted to Mr. Wil Vonderl-Xhe. Through his generosity, Notre Dame students for years to come will enjoy the many advantages of night football. Tl-IE ARCHES takes this opportunity to express the gratitude of the Brothers of the Holy Cross and all Notre Dame students, present and to come, to Mr. VonderAhe for this generous benefaction. The barometer of school spirit raised lOOfXi with the erection of the new lights. Thanks, Mr. V. All of us are most grateful. .Queen I ctw Indians ! ! ! The ineligibility was not blamed on the school or on any player, it was a technicality of which we were the victim. Cnly hours later, the undefeated Knights met St. Anthony on the Saints' home floor, and, still shocked by the disastrous news, lost their first league ball game. This and a loss to Carmel gave us a seasonal league record of l2-2. Placing fifth in the league, we were still voted into the C.l.P. playoffs as the second team. ln the first C.l.P. tilt we stomped Santa Monica, C.l.P. representative of the Bay League, 85-63, and were picked by the papers to go into the finals. ln the quarter-finals, we lost to Mark Kepple 74-68 and the team dropped from the C.l.P. picture. lt was at this game, however, that Tony Salas scored 36 points-breaking the school scoring record for a game. Bob l-lull has turned in some fine performances for the N.D. nine: so far he has pitched a no-hitter against Cantwell, a one-hitter, and a three-hitter against Loyola. Bob now boasts a 4-l record with a terrific earned run average of 0.20. Lefty, Tom Dalton, the team's other fine chuclcer, has an E.B.A. of 0.66 and a shutout against St. Anthony to his credit. Tom also has a starting berth as an outfielder when not on the mound. Big, Fred Carpenter, N.D.'s two time All-Catholic outfielder, is per usual in stellar form, with a bulging .390 batting average. Spirited lohn Miscione rounds out the outfield. The infield is ably managed by Denny Borowslqy at catcher, smooth fielding Pat Mitchell at first, Tom Wright at second, Dick Marrone at short and Dave Walsh at third. Notre Dame was put in the weak class. Four teams landed in the powerful class: Mount Carmel, Loyola, Cathedral, and St. Anthony. As the season progressed, the team rounded into shape and picked off lVlt. Carmel in their first league encounter. This was considered one of the biggest upsets in the league. Still under-rated, the team met Cathe- dral, a stronghold in track for more than a decade, and handed them their first defeat of the season. By now, the Knight spikemen were in the race for the crown and soon the rest of the league was gunning for them. Undefeated in five starts the team met Loyola, also undefeated, and was given its only defeat of the season. As we go to press, the Knights have to meet Cantwell. With only one loss thus far, Notre Dame has an excellent chance of placing second in the Catho- lic League. This year's team tied or broke every existing varsity track school record.
