But for fifty- five young women, this was the day of days-the day they first entered college. After that arduous climb up Grymes Hill, we arrived, and nerv- re ously scanned our surroundings. He ll We were, only recently glorified hig school seniors, now tl1e lowest of tlle low-college freshmen. One hundred 2 Rita Rogers, Class President, lights the Christmas Candle. X VrV,. and ten knees buckled, iifty-five stom- achs dropped, hut We surged ahead to our first encounter and met the col: lege. Looking back on Freshman year now, we can smile at our fears, but the grossness of their magnitude overf whelmed us then. That day we were petrified at our humble position in the World. Glancing enviously around us at the first Tea, we wondered if we could ever attain the poise and con- Cookie voicing our appreciation at Freshman Investiture. W 0 A-I The Faculty Dinner after Investiture. fidence of those who surrounded us. The answer seemed uno , and our hearts sank. But one faint glimmer of optimism said that we could try, and try we did. Freshman year introduced us to the bazaar in the midst of a hurri- cane. This storm was but the begin- ning: it was the prediction of the future storms that would accompany most of our social functions. The Christmas party was our first contribution to the social life of the college. We, as hostesses, cranned our necks, slid off ladders and stretched our arms in order to decorate the giant tree in the center of the audi- torium. Pouring at high tea was a frightening experience to think about but we passed it off expertly, beaming at the laudatory remarks about the success of our party. Christmas vacation meant a relief from school and gave our tired muscles a rest from an exercise in which we were always participatingg the exercise that followed the com- mand - 4'Freshmen, to the audito- rium! We have to put up the chairs. Exams were not a bright prospect for us still green coeds and a curtain of gloom seemed to fall over most of us. Seeing the doors guarded by stu- dent councilors made the tenSi0I1 even worse but we overcame our fi1'St major obstacle satisfactorily. That twice daily walk on the hill. In February, we happily greetedoa group lower than we on the scholastic ladder - the February Freshmen. Then, with our class complete, we re- ceived our academic caps and g0WDS at the Investiture ceremony. Once again the weather was against us - this time ice and snow had converted the campus into a spectacular but hazardous winter wonderland. This same month, we were proud to witness the beatification of Mar- guerite Bourgeoys, foundress' of the Congregation de Notre Dame, when attired in our academic robes we at- tended Mass in her honor at Saint Patriclis Cathedral. The Spring Term introduced us to some new fields of learning, among these, '4Home Nursing , and for months afterward everyone with even a simple headache was utreated for shock . During March, N. D. witnessed what probably was and will be, its only tragic comedy. In the Four One-Act Play competition, the illus- trious Freshmen presented a tragedy Tomorrow Is the Day, but because of prop failures and the misplaced cry-4'Let me have itli' as the gun was fired, the audience was laugh- ing hilariously when the curtain was closed. Although unrewarded, our efforts were not unappreciated. Rumors of increasing bus fares caused consternation for those travel- ing from a distance. At this time, we were still living in a paradise with two cent bus transfers, and most of us walked the hill twice daily. May saw us preparing for finals again, and for our first participation in Class Day exercises. On this event. ful day, we moved our tassels from left front to left back, signifying 0111- new position as Sophomoresg The closing of this academic year saw the departure of the cgwaterbury Girls for the C.N.D. mother-house in Montreal, this was the largest single group ever to leave our class. Our ranks had been depleted, but our spirits remained undaunted. We left for summer vacation like bright-eyed optimists. Will we ever forget that feeling of wide worldly knowledge when we eyed the younger generation and its timid battles with the law of gravity and a teacup? We had returned to the college after a long vacation, combining a summer's tan with the fashion of sophisticated living, and wearing our black silk taffetas and spike heels. For this was the year that we knew all, that is, until the scourge of American History took its toll, and we were forced into action against preserved frogs. We had begun to know the joys of no longer heing a child, when we worried the freshmen with initiation and then magnanimously made peace with them. Time out at the Senior-Sophomore Luncheon Revenge IS Sweet Those ubillets douxn on the bulletin board. Then there was the West Point Ballg we were so casual when we heard tl1e good news, as though we had been to literally hundreds gf such affairs. But the night of the dance, our viewpoint changed and our sophistication almost slipped when we were faced with a lobby full of grey uniforms with shiney gold buttons. It was not long after the West Point escapade, in which one gallant actually flew down the steps of the Astor, that certain members in the class added their talents to the Christmas tableau and came close to startling a backstage revolution. Cookie was the star of that drama in .everyday life, there has never been anyone who has reached anything equal to her unique interpretation of a dashing lady. Other thespians of the day displayed hitherto un- recognized skills, with their original lighting schemes and confused snow flurries. But these snow scenes were outdistanced to the ones created by nature, and a blizzard, on this day, had us all hiking to the ferry. The Christmas formal was sud- denly very important to us because this time it was our creation, and we were the ones who sold the bids from behing the counter in the cafe. That was the year when . . . the white bucks fad originated, Margie McKeon caused a ripple by joining the WAVES, the spring migration for Between classes some relaxation. 90 thg Point began, the Brooklyn Edu- cation girls added to their knowledge by a trip in a TV truck, we first .dis- covered that diamonds are a g11'lS very good friend, Rita Rogers was so overcome with work that. she took .to using crutches, and V31'S1ty, with 1ts accompanying cheerleader squad, be- came 3 part of the past. Besides the usual humid atmos- phere and coexistent bulletins stat- ina the type of weather in which one U u is not allowed to wear a kerchief, Spring brought us the new concern of planning the Senior-Sophomore luncheon for our older sisters, we had never realized that there could be so much controversy over a roast chicken! The luncheon, at the Tavern of the Green in Central Park, closed our social calendar for the year, and a few days later, with the turn of a tassel, we officially became upper- classmen and smiled knowingly on the newly-made sophomores. We had reached the half- way mark in our careers after brav- ing the uhigh seas for two years. The worst seemed to be behind us, and we came back, this fall, glowing with pride in our new position. Junior year was the time to write a ubaby thesisv, become engaged or indulge in intense philosophical dis- cussions-and all in spite of twenty- four credits. At last we were matured. We had crossed the bridge of Fresh- man awedness, climbed the wall of sophistication and, now, we were finally on the inside, looking out. We had earned the rank of upperclass- men. The Freshman Adoption ceremony ensured our rights to Junior privi- leges and gave us an opportunity to demonstrate our talents in vaudeville. 92 fi 3 L I 1 f F :Y 1 'QI W! Eliot was a con- troversial topicg and speaking French was suddenly the thing to do. In a mock presidential election, N. D. went Republican and voted Eisenhower into officeg the rest of the nation followed our footsteps shortly afterwards. This might have been due to the efforts ,of Eileen McCaffrey and Rita Rogers who met the president-to-be quite accidentally. Were they surprised when they found themselves the only passengers on his private ferry and had the oppor- tunity to shake his hand and talk with him. The Junior-Freshman Dance was our prize accomplishment. Preceding the annual Christmas party, a certain Junior gained eter- nal fame with her classic rendition of a song titled G6La Vie En Rosef' The Spring semester proved that this was to be Hour year. We brought back the Father-Daughter dance, initiated a ceremony of pre- sentment of Senior rings, and intro- duced a formal tea and fashion show for our mothers. A torrential downpour greeted the Junior Prom, but even a deluge could not dampen our spirits. Amid a glorious spring garden setting and to the tune of Lester Lanin fAmer- ica's number one college bandJ, the dance was a huge success. Our fame as hostesses rose again after the sumptuous banquet held at the Roof Garden of the Pierre for the outgoing seniors. The signific- ance of our future importance was beginning to grow upon us. This was our final presentation, henceforth, everything would be given to us. We were reaching the top of the ladder, European trips were inaugurated by Ruth Reardon and Ursula Ties- We Mmm, Comin' around the mountain. dell, and in their excitement about sailing uthe wild blue yonder, they had almost every other junior ready to accompany them. Planning to tour the continent, with Father Moody as their guide, they were barely able to check their exuberance. But summer jobs were calling most of us once more, and after that won- derful class day when we took over as the new senior class, We went skip- ping off, our tassels hanging in our eyes at last. I 95 Committee members and football props for the Junior Frosh dance. EMM SENI 12 YEAR Senior year began with our all- important conference with the Dean the day before the rest of the college reported. This was the final mark of superiority. We had reached our goal and our assurance at our last tea proved that we had accomplished what we started out to do. This year began a series of ulastsw to accompany a few more firsts. All of our academic functions were be- ing enjoyed this year for the last time as college life ebbed away. We inaugurated the first Senior- Sophomore dance, but found that we could not compete with a blizzard, our plans were thwarted, but only temporarily. Our vaudeville talents were again summoned up, when we presented the first senior Variety show. And President of the Glee Club, Nelly Garcelon, proved her versatility by leading the choir through their selections and singing her own solo in the meantime. Knee socks were again the rage when the temperature hit all time low points and snow was no longer a thing of the past. For the first time, sleighing parties were organ- ized on different hills surrounding the campus, and one day, the school was completely isolated by the ef- forts of ,lack Frost. The cry became -nTune in WABC to make certain that the college is open because of the arctic weather. We saw our last Christmas party with no little regret because N. D. Christmases with their large, gaily trimmed tree, the red-bowed choir- esters carrying glowing candles, and the informality of the party with the faculty had come to mean so much to us. Individual parties at tables in the ucafn proceeded the main one, and some of us will never forget that cake, baked by Eileen Woodstock, that was held together with tooth- picks.
