Freshman Year' SUMMER Happy anticipation marked the prelude to college life. Our induction into the ranks of Notre Dame brought grave misgivings min- gled with tense expectation. Fortified with the knowledge that we had successfully completed our Orientation Pro- gram, we nonetheless felt overwhelmed by the presence of graceful veterans, gliding through the rigors of our first Dean's Tea. Although we did not doubt for a moment that we would lead Notre Dame to wider horizons, we trembled inwardly and jostled our classmates struggling with equal inept- ness to balance the tea cup. Glamour gave way to solemnity as the en- tire student body assisted at the Mass of the Holy Ghost in Lavelle Hall. Thus, with proper perspective, did we begin our life at Grymes Hill. Summer time, and the living is easy is a refrain which, as we will whole-heartedly attest, contains but a grain of truth. Dur- ing the ensuing weeks we withstood coinci- dentally the wooing of the various prexies of every campus organization, the introduction to new courses and modes of education, and the familiarity lquite soon achievedl with the imposing rules of the Student Government. ln the midst of this confusion the Class of 'Sl rescued us from our quandary by legal adoption. These Junior sisters promised aid and advice on problems collegiate as they graciously entertained us in the cafe We Frosh gaily contributed to the festivity with old songs and new songs lt was on this memorable occasion that Joan Cleary and her Junior Birdmen gained their long lived fame Our serious side plainly showed however that we were ready and quite able to support 88 Little Theatre's production of Alice-Sit-By- The-Fire. Her performance in this James Barrie classic initiated Bootsie Swett's thes- pian talents. History records a progression of events. The history of the Class of '53 emphasizes the relative importance of annual changes which occurred between l949 and l953 in the metamorphosis that produced sagacious Seniors from foundering Freshmen. Out- ward physical alterations merely reflect the more vital inner changes. The four forma- tive years of our college careers have brought new maturity which has made of us truly college women. - . .
