vousfb ist-or wifi 0542 Class o 49Y2. The last act crowns the play . . . As we put the finishing touches on the drama of our college days, let us call forth the characters and re-read the play bill, so that under memory's sweet sedative, the tears and laughter of the script may merge and we may once more feel the poignancy of mirth. Act I Cast in the tragicomic role of high school senior reduced to freshman status we entered upon the collegiate stage. Our abounding self-confidence received a sudden jolt when our dazzled eyes met a battery of tests eu- phemistically-titled Orientation Program. We gazed with undisguised awe at the upper-classmen who knew simply everyone and presided with easy charm at the Dean's Tea. Kneeling prayerfully in our lowly places at the Mass of the Holy Ghost, we felt united to, yet somehow separated from, the rows of somber academically-clad figures be- fore us. Theirs was the role of scholar, their garb linked them to the medieval tradition of scholarship. This scene made us aware that ours was the role of the understudy, that of preparing and anticipating. The sense of belonging entirely was ac- quired together with a Junior sister when we were officially adopted into the Notre Dame family. We had not been taken under protection a minute too soon, for the Sopho- mores had plans for us, plans that included baby bonnets and white sneakers, animal crackers and toy balloons, and classrooms that looked like overgrown nurseries during our own 46Baby W'eek,'. However, the Sophs buried the hacket fin the fireplace, no lessl and we forgave them, singing their praises at supper in the cafe. Our new sisters quickly evinced their loving care by providing introduction to the men of the Catholic colleges in the metro- politan area at our memorable .lunior-Fresh- man dance. The ice was broken. We no longer stood alone Cexcept in the cafeteria, where all Freshmen stoodb. Little Theatre and the Clee Club profited by our talent, and in December we were proudly watching two of our number - Gloria Cavoty and Martina Griffin - taking important roles in I Re- member Mama. , Our first Christmas party on Grymes Hill will long be remembered - the huge tree we decorated, the hundreds of sandwiches we made for the tea, and Pat O,Sulivan as Santa Claus bringing presents to the faculty and fun to everyone. '6Orientation Program The vacation passed with a stealthy swift- ness, and the new year found. our company confronted with the amazing information that exams were upon us. Our dramatis personae was soon enriched by that group henceforth and forever dubbed the February freshmen. Before we had time to learn their names, Fordhamis new Presi- dent was placing a cap on each head and smiling his way into every heart. Spring brought Little Theatre's production of The Torch Bearers, a rush of events, exams, and our first act curtain. We put aside our masks and sighed for a more dra- matic role till our next entrance cue. Mary Lou's First Tea
