X X: ToDAY W To most modern youth, the days when gas lamps and horse-drawn carriages gave way to the first incandescent lights and crude auto- mobiles seem a part of the remotest past. We Notre Dame students, however, feel linked to that inventive age by a special tie since it was exactly sixty years ago, 1879, that our alma mater began to function as an educational institution. Enthusiastic as we are about all that is new and modern, we cannot suppress our curiosity about Notre Dame's development during those three score years. And what of the pupils of those times? How would their school life compare with ours? We cannot find a better means of answering these questions, or a greater way to pay tribute to our schoo1's progress than to contrast the typical Notre Dame girl of yester- year with the typical Notre Dame girl of today. In the pages to follow, you will see these two as they enact all the phases of Catholic high-school life: religious, social, athletic and schol- astic. Follow them and share with us the romantic epic of Notre Dame -past and present--as told in Tower Memories of 1939.
