XVITH the sincerest hope that this expression of loyalty and felicitation may augment his joy on the glorious occasion of his golden jubilee as a priest, we humbly dedicate this book to our beloved prelate, His Grace, the Most Rey. Joseph Schrembs, S.T.D., LL.D., Archbishop-Bishop of Cleveland. T HIS GRACE Born March 12, 1866 in Bavaria, Bishop Schrembs came to America at an early age. After long years of study, he was rewarded with ordination to the priesthood on June 29, 1889. It was in 1921, after ten years of zealous service as the Hrst bishop of Toledo, that he was transferred to the bishopric of the Cleveland Diocese. Of his labors here we need say little, for the splendid record speaks for itself. His judicious administration of the affairs of his oflice and his unselfish efforts on behalf of numerous leagues, have distinguished him as an outstanding churchman. It is not surprising then, that Bishop Schrembs' years of service and leadership should be climaxed with a singular honor when the newly-reigning Pope Pius XII, in his first official act concerning the American Hierarchy, conferred upon him the title, Archbishop We at Notre Dame congratulate our bishop upon his new appointment and also upon his Hfty years in the priesthood, and feel that there is significance in the fact that our sixtieth anniversary falls in the same year as that of his golden jubilee. For Archbishop Schrembs' inspiration and support have done more than any other single factor in making Notre Dame what it is today. LIQADIAQR IN CATHOLIC ACTION IJI'IfIiNDIiR OF THIC CATHOLIC PRESS I'RONIOTIiR OF IZUCHARISTIC CONC RISSES X X: ToDAY W To most modern youth, the days when gas lamps and horse-drawn carriages gave way to the first incandescent lights and crude auto- mobiles seem a part of the remotest past. We Notre Dame students, however, feel linked to that inventive age by a special tie since it was exactly sixty years ago, 1879, that our alma mater began to function as an educational institution. Enthusiastic as we are about all that is new and modern, we cannot suppress our curiosity about Notre Dame's development during those three score years. And what of the pupils of those times? How would their school life compare with ours? We cannot find a better means of answering these questions, or a greater way to pay tribute to our schoo1's progress than to contrast the typical Notre Dame girl of yester- year with the typical Notre Dame girl of today. In the pages to follow, you will see these two as they enact all the phases of Catholic high-school life: religious, social, athletic and schol- astic. Follow them and share with us the romantic epic of Notre Dame -past and present--as told in Tower Memories of 1939. AND YE S INTRODUCTIO 5 Q X i g Y ' f' 2 x 1 X y - 'Y g JY , 1 ' 5 E 5 1 E 2 5? Richard Gilmour, D.D., Bishop of Cleveland, was a strong incentive to its progress. His hospitality to Mother Mary Chrysostom and her band of eight sisters upon their arrival from a persecuted land, and his constant interest in the development of Notre Dame, have contributed a pleasant note to the glorious past of our Alma Mater. Each day, week and month is dedicated to Gur Namesake and her Son. The sun, shining through stained glass, finds the entire chapel filled with girls engaged in early morning prayer and song. Throughout the day, as the sun beams through the crucifixion window, and later, when the long slanting rays of late afternoon shine through, students still continue to make pop-calls to Him. Retreat . . . time to make longer visits, time to be alone with God. Beautiful silent days, March 7-10, to attend Mass, conferences, stations and Benediction. This year's retreat was the first double one in the history of the school. Rev. Andrew Cook, SJ., of Chicago, con- ducted exercises for the freshmen and sophomores in the auditorium, which was converted into a temporary chapel. At the same time Rt. Rev. Msgr. Floyd Begin, S.T.D., guided the juniors and seniors in the regular chapel. Open forums and discussions put Notre Dame's classes in religion on a practical basis. Once a week, in addition to the daily classes taught by the Sisters, the juniors and seniors are given special instruction by priest members of the faculty. EVERY Catholic girl cannot attend a Catholic high school, but in order that our friends may share the protection and beauty of our beloved Mother's blue mantle, we have revived the Mercier Club which was Hrst introduced at Notre Dame in 1929 and flourished until four years ago. Through religious chats by a visiting priest, chapel services, and a social hour, the Mercier group at Notre Dame fulfills the purpose of the club, namely: to give Catholic girls in public high schools an opportunity to associate with friends of their own faith. Til-IROUGH the past sixty years, with the steady develop- ment of Notre Dame has taken place a parallel growth in its mission activities Especially active is the Mission Club which tends to follow the Rt. Rev. Msgr. john P. Treacy's Propagation of the Faith program by aiding both the home and foreign missions. It has sponsored raffles and collected large quantities of stamps, the proceeds of which are sent to the missionaries, particularly Father Charles Bonnot and Father John Kilian, two Jesuit priests. Members of the club sew dresses, dolls and pin cushions in their spare time along with making religious book- marks and collecting holy pictures. Recently they ob- tained samples of medicine which were sent to the Ameri- can Negro Missions in Alabama. 24 y o t t'l't'll'c' CLUB MEMBERS SORT STAMPS, MAKE CLOTHES, AND RENOVATE USED RE- LIGIOUS ARTICLES AT MONTHLY MEET- INGS .... The purpose of the organization has never been modified during the fourteen years of its existence. Then, as now, it strove to maintain order throughout the school. To facilitate this work there are two groups of seniors: the monitors who patrol the halls, watch lunch lines and take posts at specified positions throughout the building, and the faculty assistants who supervise study halls in the absence of the teacher, deliver messages and do errands. Ghosts and goblins Hrst appeared at N. D. in 1935 when the seniors chose Hallowe'en as the occasion for their class party. Since then every senior class has followed them in their choice of this holiday for an annual celebration. Once in the gym, dancing, games, and refreshments diverted the seniors' attention from the witches, gob- lins and cats that menacingly regarded them from the shadows. Between the pages probably there is pressed a faded corsage and a tattered dance program reminiscent of soft colors and lilting rhythms. All these, together with a myriad of other joys were crammed into a few short hours of merri- ment. Wlien the evening was over, however, there remained the satisfying realization that with the pro- ceeds of this dance, two sodality officers would be sent to represent N. In the beginning, however, plays were almost always of an historical nature and were usually presented around the holidays, but in keeping with the modern trends students of today show a marked preference for plays of a lighter type, especially comedies. A new tendency to place all the emphasis upon the actors by doing away with detailed scenery was introduced this year by the Dramatic Club. The Notre Dame Day play joan of Arc, and the senior class play, The Lily of the Mohawksf' were of this type and proved the effectiveness of so-called stage4spacing. The Mask and Whig club, as the play production group is called, is composed of members from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes who presented appropriate plays on Notre Dame Day, at the Thanksgiving assembly, and on the night of the Sodality Reception. .1 .., , .ssstss . s if 3- - ' , ,ba A v I l , . . 5 Olhcurs: D. In those days students studied readin', ritin', and 'rithme- tic within the walls of the old school building at 18th and Superior. In 1915, the establishment moved to its present location. Wfith the introduc- tion of a more modern educational system into Cleveland schools in 1926, Notre Dame followed the trend by reorganizing the grade and high school divisions. Six elementary grades, three grades of junior high, and three grades of senior high re- placed the former eight grades of grammar school and four grades of high school. Movies, plays, lectures, and demonstrations break the so-called monotony of school life. Three distinct courses are also offered now: the college preparatory, general culture, and vocational. Art, which is offered in both the general culture and college preparatory courses, is taught by Sister Mary St. Ann, Sister Mary St. Margaret, and Sister Mary St. Therese. In the commercial department, which has greatly expanded in the past few years, Sister Mary Celia, Sister Mary Dolorose, Sister Mary Ifdmond, and Sister Mary Linette compose the faculty list. Prior to that time similar lubs, such as the Camera Club and the Magic ixers, served as outlets for the ideas and rojects of scientific-minded students. The resent club, which was named for Father ulius Nieuwland of Notre Dame Uni- ersity, is guided by a written constitu- 'on signed by all the present and former embers. Under the guidance of Sister Mary Luke, poems, short-stories, and essays flowed from their willing pens. Three mimeo- graphed booklets containing their efforts have already been published. Not content to be known merely as the producers of Tfn' Dvfmf, however, these aspiring author- esses strive to break into print via literary contests. The club's weekly meetings, despite their worthy purpose, usually terminate in a doodling session when the members decorate the blackboard of 103 with favorite scrolls. The ambitious seniors had materialized their dream. From this humble beginning, the annual which was first called Tozwr' Ml'lIIUl'if'X in 1932 grew into a large, lirst-class book. It must have been hard work at first, but the girls loved doing it, just as we do. The hours spent after school and yes-even the Easter vacation were gladly relinquished, for who minds a little work when a dream can be made a reality? The three departments, editorial, art, and business were determined to do their best, and they had fun doing it. In fact, the memories connected with the production of the annual will forever remain with the most pleasant ones of our school life. dna' In 70 1.176 BACK in 1933 when The Tower made its debut as a small, mimeographed paper without even a name, there were probably some who said it couldn't be done. Today, six years later, it bears the rating All Catholic -two words which show that it not only could be done, but that it has fulfilled it's purpose, namely: to afford a worth-while medium for student expression of Catholic principle and thereby further intelligent Catholic leader- ship. Since that memorable day in December, 1933, it has become rooted in the heart of every Notre Dame student-so much so that not until the present annual staff were to give their Tower,' positions over to the juniors did they realize just how much they really did love it. All the hustle, bustle and commotion that accompanies making the deadline, dummy-pasting night, proofreading, typing, copyreading, and of course, writing and re- porting the news had become a part of their lives. But now those days-and nights-in The Tower Roomn are only memories to be stored away with the other happy hours at Notre Dame. Staff members. starting mp, left to right: gl, LONOMY, A. EIBFX. A. A Noie 0 Thanknf IF you have enjoyed reviewing with us the scenes contained in this annual, it is only because the patience and guidance of our faculty advisers as well as the cooperation of everyone concerned, have made it possible for us to edit Tower Memoriesf' To Sister Mary St. Lucy under whose adept tutelage the editorial staff worked, we express our heartfelt thanks. Likewise, Sister Mary St. Ann, advisor to the art staff deserves a special vote of appreciation. To Sister Mary Carl for her expert management of finances, we also send a note of thanks. The appearance of any publication depends primarily upon good craftsmanship of the type that our staff has been fortunate to have at its disposal. The concerns: Chesshire-Higbee Stu- dio, Jahn and Ollier Engraving Company, Judson Printing Company, and Mueller Art and Binding Company, can rightfully claim this book as a laudable sample of their work- manship, for its fine photography, clear cuts, clean copy and attractive cover do them justice. In short, to everyone who had a hand in the production of Tower Memories, we say, Thank you -and Congratulations 95 MMM-.uEnf4 x,w...u-erase IQWWWQF ....a..in31 WSH 2-nnunlllm -'1 Bw. The results of such a drive determine the quality and size of the annual, which is bigger and better this year because of their efforts. Our special thanks are tendered to Lillian Diersen, whom we have crowned Yearbook Queen in recognition of her work of securing the largest number of advertisements. Also meriting our appreciation are Dorothea Bauer, Veronica Nuzzo, Cecille Tussay and Jeanne Smolik, runners up for the title, who have been named attendants to the queen. Likewise, we offer thanks to our advertisers whose splendid support we pledge ourselves to justify.
