Debate And Oratory Bishop Gibbons High School Debat- ing Society, under the coaching of Brother James Barwin, began the year by reorganizing to debate the new topic successfully. A series of debate theory classes were held to instruct the mem- bers in the proper form of argumenta- tion. The group met four days a week for the purpose of going through prac- tice rounds and used the activity period for researching. Numerous interschool debates were arranged to prepare the team for tournament competition. A second aspect of the society is Forensics. This group deals specifically with speaking events as outlined by the National Forensic League. Under the direction of Brother Post, the team re- ceived instruction in dramatic interpre- tation, extemporaneous speech, original oratory and declamation. The team did very well this year copping a third place trophy in the Irish Christian Brothers’ Tournament held at Essex Catholic. They also repre- sented the school at the New York State Forensic League Regional Com- petition held in Poughkeepsie, New York. W. Byrnes, M. Kondratowicz, Br. Post. L. Urban, R. Marble. J. Band Mr. Norman Fredricks, the new di- rector, with the help of moderator Br. Hart, has made the band a successful organization once again. The Christmas and spring concerts in conjunction with the Choral Club were highly suc- cessful, and their role in athletic func- tions was considerably expanded. In order to insure a good band in future years, lessons have been set up for underclassmen. A farm system”, begun in several local gradeschools in the area, has been organized to give them experience. Do what with it? 29
