. H T Bishop Gibbons High School Schenectady, New York .... Life is but it is not all all ugly, but it is no lot all bad, good, it is not all beautiful . A Man’s Work and Worthy of a Man’s Dignity • • • • 5 6 ... it is life, life, life the only thing that matters ... 8 Administration Brother Thomas P. Draney Principal Activity periods . . . abbreviated schedules . . . make- ups . . . study halls . . . reading club. . . . The perplexed looks on the faces of more than seven hundred September zombies was sufficient testimony to the fact that things are sure different around this place!” But with an adapt- ability that surprised even themselves, students soon ad- mitted that the temporary strain on their pattern of exist- ence was worth the effort. Faced with the inevitable complications inherent in every change of leadership, the Gibbons administration under the direction of Principal Brother Thomas P. Draney has succeeded in incorporating countless valuable and ambitious innovations. Ultimate purposes and obligations, however, do not change. Tranquil, efficient, neither timid nor intimidat- ing, the Bishop Gibbons administration pursues these goals with a quiet urgency. Brother Patrick B. Lane, aside from his demanding duties as teacher and as vice-principal, has assumed the necessary responsibility of dealing with those who would curse the daylight; His efficiency as Dean of Discipline can be attested to by occasional offenders or by the ever- diminishing group of regulars.” This year our chief counselor and guidance coordinator is Brother J. A. Van Koolbergen. His job is to organize, coordinate, and supervise the school’s vital guidance ac- tivities. The problems of fostering the intellectual, social, and spiritual development of the student body are the re- sponsibilities of this very popular and knowledgeable ad- visor. Br. J. G. Carr, treasurer of the school, has the respon- sibility of supervising all school finances and of coping with the perennial problem of parochial education. Br. Carr is also coordinator of athletics. Our nurse, Mrs. Waligurski, must tend to everything from keeping medical records and quelling epidemics to dispensing band-aids to bail-point victims and amateur chemists, and aspirins. Mr. E. Oliveira heads both the Athletic Department and the Physical Education Department here at Gibbons. The Physical Education Department which includes Mr. M. Meola, instills in the students a justifiable pride in their fitness. Fr. Cox, who is a member of the Guidance Department and Chaplain, concerns himself with the religious life of the students in our school. The secretaries, Mrs. Bennis and Mrs. Little, have the responsibilities of typing letters, filling out reports, and attending to a thousand details, which they do with a radiant cheerfulness and graciousness which belies the rigors of the demands made on them. It is only through such capable and conscientious per- sonnel that Bishop Gibbons has acquired its ever-growing reputation for inculcating in its students a durable sense of values. Br. P. B. ACTIVITIES Student Council IHjMi Our Student Council, under the leadership of President Roger Cochetti, took on more responsibilities than any previous Student Council. The Gen- eral Council consisted of twenty-nine elected home room representatives, five officers, and three executives. An eight-member Executive Council met with the General Council weekly. The Student Council’s projects and ser- vices included a wide range of activities: the maintenance of the Student Council book store, the Poster Club, the Ski Club, the Graduate Homecom- ing, the Junior Prom, the Senior Ball, the Computer Dance, the Junior- Senior mixer, and the sale of game tickets. The Council has demonstrated that student freedom” entails awesonje yet feasible, responsibilities. u s a P G S 24 T. Finn, D. Flatt, R. Cochetti, S. Goodall, T. Scarff, T. DiLorenzo. N Y M C A Model United Nations The Bishop Gibbons Model UN, a chap- ter of the interscholastic Model UN, has been one of the largest and most active organiza- tions in our school this year. Under the leader- ship of Vice-President John Bradt and moder- ator Br. Pellegrino, the Bishop Gibbons chap- ter recieved twenty-one delegations to the General Assembly and two delegations to the Security Council. Through participation in the organs of the Model UN, members learn in a new and exciting way the problems presently confront- ing the United Nations and the method of so- lutions proposed by the member states. Dur- ing the Model UN sessions students assume the roles of real representatives to the UN. Bishop Gibbons, as one of the fourteen Model UN member schools, was also fortu- nate this year in having two students elected as interscholastic officers — Financial Director John Cecilian and President Roger Cochetti. 26 Chinese delegate, John Bradt and Ethiopian delegate Charles Sulzman participate in the deliberations of the Security Council. Roger Cochetti presides as an Ethiopian representative addresses the General Assembly of the Model United Nations. John Bradt addressing the General Assembly. 27 Debate And Oratory Bishop Gibbons High School Debat- ing Society, under the coaching of Brother James Barwin, began the year by reorganizing to debate the new topic successfully. A series of debate theory classes were held to instruct the mem- bers in the proper form of argumenta- tion. The group met four days a week for the purpose of going through prac- tice rounds and used the activity period for researching. Numerous interschool debates were arranged to prepare the team for tournament competition. A second aspect of the society is Forensics. This group deals specifically with speaking events as outlined by the National Forensic League. Under the direction of Brother Post, the team re- ceived instruction in dramatic interpre- tation, extemporaneous speech, original oratory and declamation. The team did very well this year copping a third place trophy in the Irish Christian Brothers’ Tournament held at Essex Catholic. They also repre- sented the school at the New York State Forensic League Regional Com- petition held in Poughkeepsie, New York. W. Byrnes, M. Kondratowicz, Br. Post. L. Urban, R. Marble. J. Hart, has made the band a successful organization once again. The Christmas and spring concerts in conjunction with the Choral Club were highly suc- cessful, and their role in athletic func- tions was considerably expanded. In order to insure a good band in future years, lessons have been set up for underclassmen. A farm system”, begun in several local gradeschools in the area, has been organized to give them experience. Do what with it? 29 Choral Club The end of those weeks of practice The Bishop Gibbons-Notre Dame Choral Club consisted this year of 20 tenors, 20 basses, 50 sopranos, and 50 altos. Under the dynamic and capable direction of Mr. J. Robert Sheehan, it established itself as an outstanding cultural group in the school and community. Two major concerts were scheduled this year: the concert at Christmas 1967 and the spring concert in conjunction with the Bishop Gibbons Band, were both well received by capacity audiences. I 30 The combined Bishop Gibbons-Notre Dame chorale performs at their Christmas Concert. Literary Magazine The Spectrum consists of a group of students inter- ested in the proper method for successful expression of their ideas in writing. Numerous selections, ranging from the vituperative to the saccharine, the prosaic to the ingenious, the phil- osophical to the bizzare, are submitted to the maga- zine’s moderator Mr. Paul J. Cassidy for suggestions. The group's concerns are twofold: first, with increas- ing the interest in the school in creative writing, and secondly, with providing the opportunity for a mean- ingful exchange of constructive criticism. You're going to write about u-hat happened on Saturday night ? ? ? 31 Knight Early in September the Knight Staff was organized and set out to bring to the student body a yearbook that would excel all previous yearbooks. Due to the combined efforts of the supervisor of the book, Mr. Joseph Snapp, and the very able co-editors Richard Garbellano and William Schultz pictures were taken ahead of schedule and a new feature was introduced, the using of informal underclassmen pictures. The success of the yearbook was due to the coopera- tion of the entire staff coupled with the guidance of our faculty adviser. The staff has tried to make this the 1968 KNIGHT, an able representation of our school, and a book every student will be proud to call his very own. A. Von Stetina. T. Dilorenzo and J. R Bassi wonders why this oneis too light Crosier Lc Penseur “I am more interested in putting out a quality newspaper than getting it out on time.” This is the goal set by Br. Thomas Draney with regard to the publication of the 1967-68 Crosier. This year has been organizational working behind the scenes to prepare and insure the best” in high school journalism for the future. A curriculum of basic principles of journalism was pre- sented to the Sophomores by Mr. Arthur Isabel, moderator. Mr. Isabel is a professional working for the Schenectady Gazette. Editor John Mastriani has instructed Junior and Senior staff members during the activity periods preserfting various aspects of ''newspaper-ing”. Publishing became more difficult by doing it entirely within the school. Our first issue was printed professionally, but after that we were on our own. The great wait for issue two was necessary so that typists could be trained to justify the copy, headline type could be purchased, and the printing press could be overhauled. The Crosier is a member of the Empire State School Press Asso- ciation whose convention and seminar at Syracuse University was attended earlier in this year. In their competition, the paper re- ceived a rating of 163 of a possible 200 points. Catholic University, perhaps, has summarized the newspaper’s progress best by saying Amazing improvement!” 34 Well, how does this sound, Roper? The Newspaper. The Radio Club offers an opportunity for the inter- ested students to explore the complexities of electrical theory and design. In the preparation for their amateur radio licenses, this year’s forty members explore such fields as transistors, single side-band circuitry, radio wave propagation, and emergency communications techniques. Under the leadership of president Ken Griggs, the Radio Club enjoyed one of its most successful years. Mainstays Larry Urban and Tom Hurley, assisted by Brother V. P. Lish, trained the less experienced mem- bers, thus insuring the continued success of the club. 36 Turn up the voltage, let's not get caught short! ' Telling to you the truth. Moshe. The new side lights, of course, come from the female section of the Pep Club which is comprised of about 50 girls from Notre Dame High School. Ten of these fifty girls act as cheerleaders at our football and basketball games. Twenty-five devoted B.G. students car- ried seven subjects this year. In addition to the usual six, the newly-formed Ger- man Club provided an opportunity for these students to gain a familiarity with the language. Mrs. O’Connell, teacher-moderator, is herself a native of Frankfurt, Germany, where she was a teacher before coming to this country in 1953. She is the motivat- ing force behind the club. Conceived by Brother Draney, the club is intended for those who are going into the field of Science or for those who simply have an interest in the language. It is conducted in the same way as any language course with the same amount of homework, the sole difference being that no coercion is in- volved. The success enjoyed by the club is another indication of the feasibility of individual responsibility. 42 Chess-Club This year, one of the most popular new activities at Gibbons was the Chess Club. At the end of every day visitors to the Physics lab could see as many as a dozen heads lowered in concentration over chessboards. Under the moderation and support of Br. V. P. Lish, the club’s three teams carried on a league schedule of games among themselves, as well as several inter- scholastic matches with other area schools. Some fine upperclassmen players emerged, but it is the interest and capability of younger chess-buffs” which prom- ises a rosy future for the Chess Club at Bishop Gib- bons. Back Row: J. Cecilian, E. D. C. Hart. With an emphasis on the communication and affirmation of Christian prin- ciples, the action group enter- tained at Christmas, at St. Clare’s Hospital and at Schen- ectady County Jail. A program for the orphans at St. Cole- man's Home proved the most successful and rewarding for those students who were in- volved. Members of the Poster Club: J. Bernier, A. Vonstentina, J. Hare, P. Cochetti. Poster Club This year the Poster Club has done a most effective job in putting an interest in the students about upcom- ing events. Brilliant displays of color and imagination are continuously inspiring them. Tim Kearney, the president of the Poster Club, presents unique ideas to the members of this organization who in turn develop them into eye-catching posters. This club has played an important role in Bishop Gibbons this year, and has aided in developing a most unmistakeable spirit in the men of Gibbons. G. sur- prised its football fans (and area sports writers), boasting a 6-2 record best in history of the school and insuring its first share of the Diocesan flag. In coach Oliviera’s estimation, the Golden Knights really exemplified team spirit. The key word in the Gibbons offensive attack was diver- sity.” The talent-laden backfield consisted of seniors Bill Schultz and Nick Riano, juniors Tom DeCrosta and Dave Bessette. Chris Dickens was the prime target for Bessette's aerials. Bill Daviero and flanker John DiOrio also made their presence felt. The defensive unit, led by Dean Flatt, secured many vic- tories by their hard hitting aggressiveness. Tackle Paul Vellano, guard Pat Mastroianni, defensive ends Bill Dunphy, John Di- Orio, Joe Leva, and halfbacks Bob Ferguson, Bill Schultz, Dick Gorecki, and Kevin Ring gave the opposition few places to run. The offensive line must also be commended for the superb job they did all season. Key performers were Jack DeCrosta, Dean Flatt, Bob Swanker, Mike Verra, Kevin McLaughlin, and Paul Pentkowski. The scoring was led by Bill Schultz who scored five touch- downs and gained 672 yards at seven yards a clip. Nick Riano was second with four touchdowns, followed by Chris Dickens and Tom DeCrosta who had three each. Despite their lack of experience the Gibbons harriers be- gan to jell” during the middle of the season, capturing the Diocesan championship and finish- ing with an overall won-lost record of 147-19- Under the direction of first year coach Br. Mi- chael Pellegrino, Gibbons was respected and feared by every school in the area. Jerry Montgomery, a sophomore already being billed as. the school’s greatest runner, was this year’s super-star” Always near the top, he owns the sophomore record with a 12:15 timing of the two and a half mile Grout course. Hot on his heels was Tom Clarke, a junior, who performed amazingly well despite the fact this was his first year at track. Steve Goodall was the only return- ing letterman this year. As team captain Goodall was an inspiring team leader and a fine runner. Participating in their first year of Varsity com- petition were Tom Burnes and Chet Bigeanski, both consistent runners. Steve Mahoney, the only senior on the squad, and Steve Wade, a tenth grader, also contributed to this fine year with outstanding seasons. Jerry Montgomery setting his 12:15 on the Grout run. Burke R Rossi Varsity Though the Knights seemed to have trouble in non-league competition, they came through when it counted, and at the end of the season they found themselves on top of the Diocesan League. Winning the flag in his first year was indeed, a tribute to Coach Larry Feldman. Leading the Gibbons attack was scrappy Jim Tedisco, his unbelievable moves, deadeye shooting and pin hole passing made him Schenectady County’s choice for Runnerup Player of the Year. Jim also broke the Diocesan scoring record set by Dick Grubar with a phenomenal 26.1 points per game average, and the single game record with 55 points in one game. The all-around honors go to senior Stan Withkowski who helped Gibbons greatly off the boards as did Center Tim Farry and Jim Pawlik, the other forward. Tim also helped take up the scoring slack when the opposing defense was keyed on Tedisco and Pawlik was deadly from the corner. In the other guard position was Bob Rossi, managing a 15 point average, it was Bobby who made the difference in many of the Knight’s most impor- tant games. Gibbons also received a lot of help from junior Steve Albrezzi. He was in the starting lineup whenever Gibbons was riddled with one of its many injuries. Senior Ken Hoffman was sidelined most of the year with ankle injuries, but he was impressive in the games in which he did play. Basketball Team wound up its season win- ning 11 out of their 18 game schedule. Through the drive and determination of first year coach Frank Bianchini, the Knights won the J. V. portion of the Amsterdam Christmas Tournament, downing Hudson, 82-69 and Guilderland 68—48. Captain Bill Daviero was voted Most Valuable Player of the tourney, averaging 18 points and 17 rebounds for the two games, with very strong support from Bob Hoffman, and an excellent floor game from Jimmy Collins. Hard-crushing sophomore Bob Hoffman averaged 15 rebounds and was leading scorer with 16 points. Second to him was junior Bill Daverio with a 14 point average and 13 rebounds per game, other players averaging in double figures were junior Art Viscusi with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Bill Langston with 10 points and 3 assists per game. Quarterback Jimmy Collins led the team in assists with 6, along with contributing 8 points per game after missing a great part of the season with a serious ankle injury. Tom Hassel second leader in assists with 4 per game, and a 5 point per game average. All in all the future for next year’s Varsity seems promising. Bill Daviero comes up with an easy two pointer. 65 Jimmy Collins Quarterback of the Gibbons offense passing in for another assist. Art Viscusi all alone as he goes up for two. J.V. Bowling This year's bowling team could easily be called the never say die team of 1968”. Despite record shattering performances, this year's team lost several matches by less than forty pins. The team began to show its winning style as it won 6 of their 8 matches including a sweep of trophies in the Diocesan League Tournament and a smashing win over the intramural all-stars. Led by consistent strike men Doug Wisnewski and Joe Parker and backed by the very capable Tom Micile, Marty McDon- naugh, John Divine and Robert Consalvo, and super sophs Adam Lubrant and Henry Cassidy. Pellegrino, Bishop Gibbons's Indoor Track Team, despite a number of unfortunate occurrences, had a very successful season. The team made its belated debut in Syracuse where the Knights placed third out of twenty- five upstate schools. Improving steadily, the team placed second in Rochester out of fifteen western schools and the following week recorded its initial first place finish. Co-captain Rudy Nedvidek dashed to a record-breaking season. The fleet-footed seniors est- ablished school records in the 50 yard, 60 yard, 160 yard, and 300 yard dashes. The mile relay team of Mike Chantnicki, Rick Fogarty, Larry Loveless and Jack O'Brien set school records in the 1600 and 1800 yard relays and accounted for nearly a quarter of the team's points. Other records were set in the 640 yard, 900 yard and 1600 yard medley relay. Mike Caputo, Bob Tiscionee, Chet Rozowicz, Bill Schultz, Tom Howley, Gary Chylinski and Jack McDermott aided the team's efforts. An impressive victory was scored by Steve Good- all in the 1000 yard run, while Rick Morse accounted for most of the team's middle distance points. Fresh- men Ed Flynn, Dave Yankovich and Steve Burke were also instrumental. First Row: W, Wakeman, R. Schultz, T. Clarke, C. Bieganski, G. Carta, R. Nedvidek, W. Schultz, T. Vellano. Second Row: S. Zwack G Gourlay realm-of-the-gods, or I-with-my-extraordinary-vision-will- determine-the-general-course-of-the-universe-let-my-secretary- do-the-work.” The extraordinary impracticality of this way of thinking is evident to those who have worked on any publication: page 4, or page 75, or page 144 simply does not exist until someone creates it. And it cannot be created by generalizations, smiles and excuses, good will, or sophisticated abstract theories. If a misspelling is not corrected, the misspelling becomes reality; if a page is not laid out, the page does not exist. Our lives, we are told, are in constant danger of being abstracted to death, and this is tragic. But the breach of faith which is involved in abstracting to death the expectations of several hundred students would be more tragic. The idea, then, that a yearbook should be relegated to the idealist, the romantic, the dreamer is a false one. Dreams are necessary, but confrontation and execution are essential. 144 JJIbh M'lU
