You will recall many favoured and familiar settings where you spent such happy hours together with your friends; the bright and smiling faces of those you have grown to know and to love; the varied and interesting activities and pastimes in which you participated. But — above all, my dear girls, may you recall the deep and lasting lessons of truth that Notre Dame has tried to implant in your hearts during your years here. If you ever keep in mind this true wisdom, and live it out in your future lives, it will be your surest guarantee of personal success and of eternal happiness; and we will always be able to be as proud of you, as you are today of Notre Dame! OUR N. D. CHAPLAIN REVEREND R. W. O ' BRIEN For his cheerful personality, his personal interest in each one of us; for the many spiritual graces and blessings that come to us through him, we are deeply grateful. May God bless him! The pause that refn teachers alike spend sil the altar of God. : )XXX X M ♦ â– . • M w i i WW 1 snWi i us f arwwj EDITORIAL 1960 . . . the year of promise. In an apparition to three small children in 1913, Our Lady promised that peace would reign through prayer and sacrifice. Has the promise been kept? Perhaps we should ask ourselves, Have we fulfilled the terms? Giant strides in nuclear warfare have been welcomed by an insecure world. But is this a step towards true peace? Is this what Our Lady meant? One of the children who saw Our Lady in 1913 - Lucy - is still alive today. She has written a letter to be opened in 1960, in which is revealed a further message from Our Lady of Fatima. As we present our 1960 Nodaac, then, we pray that all of us may realize the true meaning of peace, the peace of Our Lady of Fatima. Sheila Quinn presents prizes for the game of HEARTS to Constance Harkin and Mary Currie. They Wanted m Light On The Subject...And They Got It! It was people with inquisitiveness and a sense of experiment in the early, struggling days of Hamilton that brought the first lighting to homes and factories. In ' a little cottage on Main Street, a family that had been engaged in the work in England, produced the first sulphur match in 1830. Then the first use of natural gas as an illuminant in Canada was in the Old Mill at Mount Albion, on tha eastern part of the mountain. The Young brothers of Hamilton took a role in it, too, by following up with the use of petroleum in the shape of a burner for the family lamp — something quite new for Canadians. Famous in this line was Charles Will son, a chemist of York Street, who discov- ered acetylene gas — one of the more remarkable individual achievements in the growing town. Willson had a small room over a blacksmith shop and liked to try his talent in experiments. THROUGH EXPERIMENT AND ORGANIZATION THE GREAT INDUS- TRIAL TRIUMPHS OF HAMILTON HAVE MADE ITS NAME FAMOUS . . . WITH IT HAS GROWN THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR, NOW MORE THAN MO YEARS OLD, AND AT A CIRCULATION FIGURE OF OVER 100,000 COPIES EVERY DAY. To be SURE of what you read - Be Sure to read . . . O that EATON ' S spends for merchandise is spent in Canada Eaton ' s is one of Canada ' s biggest and most consistent customers. Although we constantly import the specialties of other countries and our buyers shop the markets of the world in search of new and interesting products, nevertheless the percentage of Canadian-bought merchandise sold in Eaton stores is tremendous. In fact, more than 85% of the goods we sell are bought from Canadian suppliers. We buy in every part of Canada— from large industries, small factories and individual artisans, in cities and towns and villages from British Columbia to Newfoundland. And wherever we buy, we help contribute to the well-being of the community and prosperity of its citizens; we help to keep factories busy and men and women working and earning. Here is convincing evidence of the faith that Eaton ' s (and the people who shop at Eaton ' s) have in the products of Canadian mills and factories ... in the resources and resourcefulness of Canadian suppliers. 3L«fSi As Eaton ' s of Canada, we are justifiably proud to be able to play a leading role in the development and progress of Canadian industry.
