7 rincilaaffi message Notre Dame Academy, as its name implies, is placed under the benign patronage of our Blessed Lady. For the past thirty-one years of its existence, she has ever been held up as the gracious model, the loving guide and the constant inspiration of each and every student who has come to N. Di to receive an education within its walls. My dear students of '58, I also present to you Mary, Our Lady, Notre Dame. As you go forth into your new walks of life, no matter what you do or what you become, keep her and her sterling virtues ever before you as your beacon light, your ideal to follow despite the various difficulties and obstacles that will confront you. Never com- promise for the maxims of the world, the true principles of Christianity you have learned here. Keep your eye trained to gaze on the mountaintop where stands Notre Dame, and keep climbing up and up to the summit-strive continually higher and higher for the only true goal that is worth climbing for. Let us consider your life of the future as a trip. Wihen you are planning any worth- while trip, you map out the whole course before setting out, and the more important the trip, the greater the precautions you take. If your journey impels you to travel on a road you have never travelled before, you make yourself familiar with the route of the road. You will make inquiries at travel agencies, consult guide-books, time-tables, road- maps, secure accommodations and make reservations, so that you may arrive safely and surely at your destined point. But, my dear students, not all the travel agencies, guide books, time-tables, ot road- maps in the whole world can help you if you have no idea where you are going. In other words, you must first choose your destination, and then steer straight for that end, otherwise, your trip becomes an aimless drifting to Nowhere, Each of you have the fine opportunity of starting out on a long trip, an important trip, almost as important as you going to Heaven, in fact, it is closely linked with your journey to God, and thus, the better you chart your course, and the better you follow your plan, the surer you will be of gaining your heavenly destiny. I mean that each of you is facing the opportunity of a trip into the world of IDEALS-IDEALS you are going to follow through life. Whether those IDEALS will lead you Up or Down de- pends on your own personal choice. You are familiar with the little poem that reads: To every man there openeth A Way, and Ways, and a Way. And the High Soul climbs the High Way, And the Low Soul gropes the Low, And in between, on the misty flats, The rest drift to and fro. But to every man there openeth A High Way and a Low, And every man decide-th The Way his Soul shall go. The thought in this little poem summarizes very aptly my message to you. May each of you make the right decision. and then, with Our Lady as your guide leading the way, may each of you follow in her loving footsteps up, up to the throne of her Divine Son. -7-
