wb- vw XJ CQ' Sfudmf 60 cl! The purpose oi the Student Council is to encourage the students of Notre Dame Academy to accept and discharge their responsibilities to themselves and to their school to stimulate a spirit of cooper ition among the Students and the Stall and to ald in the development ol loyal, constructive school spirit Membership in the Student Council presupposes that each councilor will maintain a high scholastic average and uill at all times be in cxemplai ol the ideals ol Notre Dame Academy The Student Council was organized in September 1949 upon the suggestion and guidance of Mother Saint Mary Cenevieve. Under its hrst president, Betty Twyford, it laid the basis for the transference of responsibility in school activities and discipline to the student body. During its second year the Council, guided by President Eileen Hoey, expanded its influence. Encouraged by the progress made in the formative years the 1949-1950 Student Council, with Constance Ayers as president devised a program by which the Council attained an important place in school curriculum. Several amendments were added to the Constitution. An Honor System was estab- lished which placed full responsibility for the maintenance of the standards set by the Staff upon the student body. A more ellicient programing of student activities during the school year was provided in order to arrange dates for meetings so as to prevent conflicts. A Standards Committee was organized for supervision and enforce- ment of established high standards. General assemblies were held in the school audi- torium at which all the students discussed matters of importance to the student body. The Student Council was honored by a letter from the Middle States Association, complimenting it for its organization and effectiveness. Considering the prestige of this Association the council members felt that this was indeed high praise. U1
