,Masfrzz Ol PRESENTED BY I HE SENIOR CLASS O Flower of Howers, our Lady of the May! Breathe from Cod's garden of eternal Howers Blessing, when we thy little children pray: Let thy soul's grace steal gently over ours. Send on us dew and rain, That we may bloom again, Nor wither in the dry and parching dust. Lift up our hearts, till with adoring eyes, O Moming Star! we hail thee in the skies,' Star of our hope and trust! Sweet Star, sweet Flower, there bid thy beauty stay: O Flower of Howers, our Lady of the May! O Flower of Howers, our Lady of the May! Thou leftest lilies rising from thy tomb: They shone in stately and serene array, Immaculate amid death's house of gloom. Ah, let they graces be Sown in our dark hearts! We Would make our hearts gardens for thy dear care: Watered from wells of Paradise, and sweet With balm winds Howing from the Mercy Seat, And full of heavenly air: While music ever in thy praise should play, O Flower of flowers, our Lady of the May! We pause awhile - and look back. Remember September 9, 1946? How falter- ingly we followed the lighthearted, self assured upperclassmen up the Bunny Pathn. We had not noticed this secret passage through the woods when we made our formal registration visit. We soon realized that this was only one of the many happy experiences awaiting us. lntrigued with the newness of things, with the atmosphere of distinction and refinement, we un- derstood, although we had no words for the sa ev.. digs:-e at- 9Q ' RILX'LllliND YlXClgX'l' BEA l'l'Y, SJ llctrcat hlastcr, 1950 wi , ,,,,.'1g.z .i X,-f X--1 A-aff! thoughts, how lucky we were to be here at Notre llame Academy. Yet we were not inarticulate in our appraisal of the social activities. Uur Freshman calendar was filled with humor- ous dates ranging from the insignificant meetings of the Tan Bandittiu to the more important meetings of the school's many clubs. From the very start, our class was completely united. Our many little projects, including the yellow shoelaces with scrubby oxliords, the swaying back and forth during llistory and the huge turtle we brought into class proved our liunloving dispositions. XVe entered wholeheartedly into everything. VVe soon established our fame by winning the song contest sponsored by the CAA. VVe gave our loyal support to the Varsity and those of us who did not make the team gladly helped cheer them. Suddenly mid-terms were upon us. We found U91 603 f?'7'x S-N.- ,,- .-.. J. Af L- X 4... . out how little we knew about Latin declensions and Science experiments. XVe looked forward to the Freshman-Sopho more Valentine Party for weeks. VVhen the great day finally arrived we had a wonderful time. The Sophomores were charming hostesses. It was the first time we really had a chance to get to know them. Our first Retreat at Notre Dame Academy was a memorable occasion. Under the inspiring guid- ance of Father Hugh Calkins we solved many of our problems. We were overjoyed when four of our beloved classmates participated in the 'lbig playn. Spring came and so did Spring Fever . We found it very difhcult to study for those final exams. Cur Freshman year was glorious. So many hrstsl Sophisticated Sophomores! This was the year we earned the title of 'isocial butterflies . In Sep- tember we returned to Notre Dame Academy bursting with intentions of leading the school. We encountered our first obstacle in the form of Latin, Geometry, and French. But our Sophomore year didnlt consist of all work and no playu, for in October our social activities commenced as we de- voured burnt hot dogs and carbon crusted marsh- mallows at the fall weenie roast . After this casual event we looked forward to the sophistication of our first High School Dance: the ClA.A. Turkey Trot. On December 8 we became part of an impres- sive ceremony as we consecrated ourselves to the Blessed Virgin as Sodalists. We added another cu., L 14 - .sf-X ff note to our fame when we won the song contest for a second time, constantly crooning HN. D. is on its way . Abounding in the Christmas spirit, our generosity knew no bounds as we outfitted baskets for the needy. Wle began the new term by getting acquainted with the Freshmen at the Valentine Dance. Then our thoughts turned to the spiritual, as Father Frank Beatty brought us closer to God during our second annual Retreat. Soon we were directing our energy toward our major production Harriet . With Spring came the May Procession and, as new Sodalists, we par- ticipated with unequalled fervor. Finally, we prepared ourselves to come face to face with our First High School Regents. Recalling the days of our junior year we visual- ize the distracting view from the classroom. Our studies in French were interrupted frequently when the Queen Mary or Queen Elizabeth came through the narrows . Can we ever forget those Monday morning conferences? Those deep, pene- trating discussions in Religion class will remain with us as a treasure throughout the years. No one could ever be so fine a convert as Michael, our re- formed atheist. To a 'iclass without a teacher for a few days Miss Kane kindly came. With her we struggled through Hlogarithmi' weeks. That year Father Donahue gave us our inspir- ing and elevating retreat. VVeeks after, we still kept with us that spirit which held us to better ways of V4 - .. ..... ......,.......- ,..v' thought and action. And then - that whispered word that made our eyes shine -the Prom. To the music of The Minute Men we danced and whirled on the clouds of music. The Kings Servant given in March brought out again the Sarah Bernhardtsp and i'Katherine Cornellsn of the class. The inspectors from the Middle Atlantic Asso- ciation did not intimidate us in the least. We were f61 Q? proud of Notre Dame Academy and we made every effort to proxe to the examiners what wonderful teachers we had VVe were not surprised to receive the formal accreditation We took this as a matter of course VVe felt and looked like brides in our white xeils as we sang and marched in our Ladys May procession. Then came the unior Senior banquet at which we were hostesses. Can we ever forget the pleased expressions of the Seniors as they viewed the replica of the High School? With the close of the year we realized that next year we would no longer be uniors but Seniors. Remember the great dav when vie walked into school and said I am a Senior'? Although we all thought wc sfzozrfd fccl diffcrcnt none of us did. VVL proudly took possession of the Senior locker room complctc with ncw dripcs and '1 new chaise longue. After three years of being together we were divided into two classes. Since we xx ere together for most of our classes, it didnft affect us too much. We started our social activities early in October at the Senior l lalloween Party. ln November the Iligh School was transformed into a fairyland for the G.A.A. Autumn Whirl. The purpose oi the Student Council is to encourage the students of Notre Dame Academy to accept and discharge their responsibilities to themselves and to their school to stimulate a spirit of cooper ition among the Students and the Stall and to ald in the development ol loyal, constructive school spirit Membership in the Student Council presupposes that each councilor will maintain a high scholastic average and uill at all times be in cxemplai ol the ideals ol Notre Dame Academy The Student Council was organized in September 1949 upon the suggestion and guidance of Mother Saint Mary Cenevieve. Under its hrst president, Betty Twyford, it laid the basis for the transference of responsibility in school activities and discipline to the student body. During its second year the Council, guided by President Eileen Hoey, expanded its influence. Encouraged by the progress made in the formative years the 1949-1950 Student Council, with Constance Ayers as president devised a program by which the Council attained an important place in school curriculum. Several amendments were added to the Constitution. An Honor System was estab- lished which placed full responsibility for the maintenance of the standards set by the Staff upon the student body. A more ellicient programing of student activities during the school year was provided in order to arrange dates for meetings so as to prevent conflicts. A Standards Committee was organized for supervision and enforce- ment of established high standards. General assemblies were held in the school audi- torium at which all the students discussed matters of importance to the student body. The Student Council was honored by a letter from the Middle States Association, complimenting it for its organization and effectiveness. Considering the prestige of this Association the council members felt that this was indeed high praise. Under the in- spiring guidance of Mother Saint Mary Genevieve, our moderator, and the untiring efforts on the part of Miss Christine llowe, our director, the club has achieved another year of amazing success. This year for our major production, we turned from a tragedy to a comedy. The successful Broad- way show Life with Mother made its comeback in our little theatre during April. VVe will never forget the anxiety of first tryouts, the tiring hours of practice but the thrill that came when the cur- tain rose on opening night. Life with Mother is another success we have added to our repertoire of past performances. Our society is an active member of the National Catholic Theater Conference. Its purpose is to further interest in the Catholic Theater Conference by presenting plays with a high moral background. Each member of the Dram has, as her goal, the Drama key which is merited at the end of four years by earning of twentyone points. Backstage work, prompting and costuming all count toward the accumulation of points. It is obvious therefore, that the Drama Club benefits not only those who have dramatic ability but also anyone who is willing to do her part in our productions, though she may never shine before the footlights. The Cast of Life With Mother enjoyed an appreciative and responsive audience. Seated, left to right are: Beth Davies, Lois McGrath, Joanne Dooley, Joan Saccaro, Patricia Farnan. Standing: Donez Xiques, Mary Marsh, Anne Reidy, Joanne McVVilliams, Jayne Leahey, Frances Downing, Lorraine Fields, Joan Carroll, Joan Meek, and Phyllis Zarelli. ,fs- D .JL u rut NW X l Ut NN Url t Omni Nlblml fu mu' tuitt Mrs. Willoughby Uoanne DooleyD is obviously pleased with john's attention. joan Carroll reenacted role ol' john Day. The first event of the year was the Autumn Whirl . The proceeds of this dance will be used for the building of the nevv tennis court. Seniors from St. Francis Prep Seton Hall Prep and the Augustinian Academy as well as several from Villanova and St. Peter's Colleges were invited. XVith their wonderful cooperation and our schoolmates support the dance was a complete success. Besides being the first social event of the year it was the first dance ever given in our school. The outstanding feature of the G.A.A. is the Varsity captained by Beth Davies. XA e are especially proud of the good sportsmanship of the team in accepting defeat as well as victory. Our six cheerleaders vurc alvi ays on hand to lead our cheering squad to spur the Varsity on to their victories and to help soften the blow of their defeats. Little Miss Notre Dame Justine Moran became a regular cheer- leader. She helped boost the morale of the team and certainly was a credit to the cheering squad. The last event on the C,.A.A. calendar was Field Day. Athletic letters out awarded to all students who earned them. The point system offers the opportunity of winning a letter not only to Varsity players but to all those who have been of assistance in G.A.A. activities. The 'W eenie Roast and tht spirited singing of school songs made this day an unforgettable one. The C.A.A. has contributed greatly toward character building. Require- ments such as perfect uniforms, silence in the halls and other regulations have developed the sense of fair play in all the members. This association has encouraged a sense of responsibility, the value of cooperation and team- work and, most of all, a respect for other girls, even when they are opposed to us. First and foremost, the G.A.A. has shown us how to be great losers, as well as Sportsman-like winners.
