These halls were strange, not only to us, but also to the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, who had just arrived in Miami, from West- chester, Pennsylvania. Though the first few weeks were filled with confusion and disorder, we and the sisters eventually became adjusted to the new rules and regula- tions. We proved that being the low group on the totem pole didn't mean we were the low group on the talent pole. On December 11th, the circus rolled into NDA with the Sophomore talent show. The acts ranged from a skating performance to songs, dances, and comedy. Never did we imagine the days of Christ so vividly until we attended the Academy Award winning motion picture Ben Huru. The scenes and plot were so intricate that it held our interest to the very end. The day was a change from the usual, but it was extremely interesting. Seen by many of us for the first time was the reception of the postulants into the order of the Sisters of St. Joseph. We witnessed a beautiful sight as the postulants walked towards the altar in their white gowns to become the servants of God . We became acquainted with the marvels of the under- water world on our field trip to the Miami seaquarium. Sr. Marie Hostia, Sr. Cyrenia Marie, and Sr. Theresa Alma accompanied by Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Wiegmann -Zwere our chaperones for the day. All brought their lunches ibiand a grand picnic was had. ,i-1 The month of April reminds us of carnival time. Under the guidance of Sr. Marie Hostia, and with the generous help of Mrs. Mosca, a spaghetti dinner was enjoyed by all who attended. After dinner, many participated in the games of chance at booths, and later on in the evening a raffle was held. Field day came and went and with it we, the sopho- mores, defeated the juniors at baseball and won the hoola-hoop contest. At show time we put on a spectacular display of calisthenics. In December a Forensic Program was started by Sr. Marie Hostia, As a product of their industry during the year the members of the league were able to participate in the nation-wide contest which was held in New York City. We are very proud of our classmate, Jane Nilon, for her outstanding ability in debating. As a last activity in our sophomore year we gave the graduating class of '60 the traditional Mother-daughter tea. 56 IUNIOR YEAR Returning to Notre Dame as juniors we found that new changes had taken place, such as the addition of freshman class, and the new uniforms. Installation of Student Council members took place September 23, 1960. At this time junior council mem and homeroom representatives took a pledge of fide A new activity, the Children of Mary, became part Notre Dame under the direction of Sr. Cor Mariae. Tl main goal is to give special devotion to the Blessed Motl The football season arrived, and with it came the N Dame cheerleaders. Among the junior cheerleaders Joan Berceli, Joyce Bogdanffy, and Theresa Caunci A Christmas play entitled The Crib of Grecion, un the direction of Sr. Cor Mariae, Sr. Mary Bcrchmans Mrs. Roberts, was presented in the school cafetori for the faculty and student body. The theme of the annual junior dance was the S Man Frolicn. On january 27, we tried to recapture winter season with a snowman and snowballs galore Launching a new activity at Notre Dame was science fair, headed by Sr. Cyrenia Marie. It was h in the school cafetorium on February 16 and 17. Am those who won ribbons for their displays were Car Hughes, Eileen Lannon, and Alice Henke A Pontifical High Mass was celebrated by Bishop C man F. Carroll to commemorate the opening of P American week. We, the juniors, along with the en student body assisted at the elaborate celebration. With vocational month came the annual essay cont sponsored by the Serra Club. A first place winner Judith Magill who competed in the B Division open all juniors. A gold plaque was presented to the sch to be retained for one year. A forecast of our senior year arrived late in April wh we were measured for our long-awaited class rin To acquaint ourselves with the Courier staff, we we invited to assist them in the editing of their last editi of the school paper. The election of our officers for the following ear we announced and they were as follows: Sandra Gillis, pre dentg Eileen Lannon, Vice-President, Melodye Moulto Secretaryg and Dolores LaRuffa, Treasurer. On May 21, we were hostesses for the traditional Fathe daughter breakfast which we gave the seniors of '6 Under the direction of Sr. Cyrenia Marie, Sr. Virgin Assumpta, and Mrs. Barbick, an enjoyable moming w had by both fathers and daughters. Outstanding achievements by NDA juniors in the APS nationwide competitive Latin examination was announce by a letter from Auxilium Latium, national class mag zine. Three juniors, Judy von Suskil, Jane Nilon, an Lorraine Rumbel were awarded Certificates of Superla tive Merit, which is the highest possible rating. Eac girl also received a gold medal. Publication staffs, Children Mary, Mission Club officers, and homeroom represen- ves received their ribbons and badges. The students pledged their loyalty to NDA and the program con- ed with the singing of the alma mater. ' pep rally sponsored by the Madonna staff on Septem- 29th was followed by a Get Together Dance , which ved to be a great financial help in the production of yearbook. Also, a pep rally was conducted by the Couri- staff to encourage the student body to buy subscrip- is to the school paper. fter waiting impatiently for three long years, our rished class rings were presented to us during a beau- il ceremony on November 3rd. Father Robert Rearden ssed and distributed the rings. We then attended the ly Sacrifice of the Mass wearing our rings for the first e. n a superb display of dramatic ability six members the senior class represented NDA at the Drama stival held at Barry College on November 4th. Penny dry, through her promise of talent as an actress, was arded the trophy for the best actress. The remainder the east also gave an excellent performance. With the election of Arlene Biagotti as queen, and ndra Gillis and Melodye Moulton as princesses, the mecoming festivities of Curley High School began. The 'irvest Dance was the next event on our calender. A x supper and a night of square dancing was the special traction for the senior class. Skip day was held at the traditional scenic place of randon Park. The voices of 118 girls were heard as We joyed a day of swimming, picnicing, and games. The second annual reception of the new members of e Children of Mary was held on the first Friday in eeember. This was a solemn ceremony at which Father earden blessed the miraculous medals of the Blessed other and presented them to the new members. The oly Sacrifice of the Mass was then offered in their Il0I'. With the joyous season of Christmas came the Senior ing Dance. The most exquisite decorations were pre- ared for the occasion. Our faces reflected pride and joy .lsliaforg - ...lllllllll ' ,. as we stood under the symbolic ring to have the memories of the night captured in a picture. During the'middle of january we, the seniors of Sister Agatha's Home Economics class, took part in a fashion show. We modeled the clothes which we had made during the first semester. The styles were varied ranging from playelothes to dresses. The journalism class sponsored a calender party which was most interesting and enjoyable. Tables were decorated representing the months of the yearg entertainment and refreshments were enjoyed by those who attended. The junior-Senior Ministrel was eagerly anticipated by parents and students alike. XVith Sister Cyrenia Marie and Mrs. R. Barbick, as our directors and advisers, the show proved to be an enjoyable occasion. It was a beautiful May afternoon when we, the seniors, and our mothers accepted the invitation of the sophomores to attend a tea given in our honor. XVe were served Petit-fours and coffee or tea. We wish to thank the sopho- mores for their wonderful hospitality. Tests always seem to be the hardest part of school life and it was no exception with the Gainesville Ex- aminations. Most of us had a -firm desire to attend col- lege, and the numerous questions that entered our minds were answered by our counselor, Sr. Jose Marie. Fathers proudly escorted their daughters to the Father- -5 daughter breakfast given by the junior class. The forth- coming seniors of '63 were delightful hostesses and we were gratified with the hours of planning and work in which they so successfully accomplished in giving us the - breakfast. -1 As one of our last activities as a senior at Notre Dame, we attended a beautifully planned dinner and banquet -: held in our honor. Following the banquet, awards were given to the most deserving students. We wish to thank the members of the guild for an enjoyable evening. 'LEE The long-awaited day of graduation finally arrived and with it came tears both of sadness and of joy. As we walked up to the altar of St. Mary's Cathedral we were reminded of the effort that was put into our work these past three years. A speech by Bishop Carroll was directed to the seniors. As we walked out of the Cathedral doors we realized that this was the last of our high school days. At Notre Dame we have acquired many Christian ideals which will always guide us in our future lives. In the days to come we hope to prove ourselves worthy of the title ' a graduate of Notre Dame Academy of 62'.
