Our school inspired us to higher levels of educationg our teachers brought the education within our reach: and our classmates provided friendship. lllllllllllllllllllll Ml Time is a sort of river of passing events and strong is its currents: no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away Meditations lV,4-3 Table of In Recognidon In hdernoriarn Administration Seniors Underclassmen Activities Sports hdusic Advertisers Senior Activities Contents Pages 5 6 9 21 47 59 69 81 89 110 In Recognition fkfjar, f -A , We, the graduating class of 1962, take great pride in recognizing Mrs. Marjorie Walsh in our year- book. If someone were asked to describe Mrs. Walsh in one sentence, we know exactly what he would say, To know her is to love her. , When we remember sitting in Mrs. Walsh's class, we know we learned more than just the lesson of the day. We learned that a sense of humor was just as important as those famous dates: we laughed at ourselves and our mistakes. Mrs. Walsh's sense of humor cannot be described with words, but we all remember an example of it. Who can forget the year she sat on the stage and pounded the bongo drums for our Sophomore Assembly? Ma Walsh, as she has, been lovingly called by many of her students, shall always remain in our memories as not only a teacher, but as a very good friend, She gave many students the incentive to improve themselves, and when they needed help they knew exactly where to go. There is a light shining from within her that can inspire a smile on the loneliest face. And, if anyone were ever to listen to the Alma Mater, he might believe that certain lines referred only to our Mrs. Walsh: Though we may journey far away, our thoughts will turn to thee. The work and frm that we have shared, The friendships we hold dear Will linger in our memories And keep thee always near. In Memoriom RUSSELL COLBERT On August 6, 1961, Norwood lost a well-known and respected man, Russell E. Colbert. Mr. Colbert spent many years of hard work on the Norwood-Norfolk Board of Education. He was known throughout Northern New York for his dedicated work to help the families inthe area. Also Mr. Colbert was an active member in his church, What Cheer F8LMA Lodge, and the local Teamsters Union. Such a sincere, devoted person will be remembered by everyone who knew him. In Memoriam L fig DR. JAMES P. SMITH Beloved physician, benefactor, friend. He has fulfilled the Oath of Hippocrates, Now, if I carry out this oath, and break it not, mayl gain forever reputation among all men for my life, and for my art. His integrity, his kindness, his keen sense of humor and his high moral courage earned the respect and love of all who knew him. His exemplary life was given in un- selfish devotion to this community, its schools and its interests, and his passing, like the falling of the giant tree leaves a lonesome place against the sky. 7 In Memoriam TERRY MOSHH2 The entire student body and faculty were shocked and grieved at hearing of the sudden and untimely death of Terry Mosher, Terry died in a drowning accident on May 27, 1961. Terry was born in Norfolk, New York, on November 30, 1938. to Mr. and Mrs. Patrick T. Mosher, He was very active in school sports, participating in swimming, baseball and hockey. He graduated in June of 1956. With his death we lost a truly fine person. MICHAEL HEALY LEONARD Michael Healy Leonard, son of Hilda and William Leonard, was born on May 3, 1940. Mike was a 1957 graduate of NNCS. During his high school days Mike was on the hockey team for three years. The tragic accident that took his life occured on March 20, 1961. At that time Mike was a senior at St. Michael's College at Winooski. Vermont, and would have graduated in the upper-third of his class in June, He was planning to continue the study of law at Georgetown University, where he had recently been accepted, Mike was a sincere person and student, The distressing news of his untimely death was a shock to all of his NNCS classmates and was received with heartfelt sympathy from everyone at the Norwood- Nor folk Central School. MELISSA CARROLL IV . f Q, Supenntende nt QQ, 4' 0 Cer fp J- Message From Our Boord President I believel can do no better in my message than these two quotations. One is by ,Tames Baldwin in the New York Times Book Review of January 14th, 1962. I have taken the liberty to change a word here and there to make it pertain more directly to you, rather than paraphrase it. You are the generation that must throw everything into the endeavor to remake America into what we say we want it to be. Without this endeavor, we will perish. However immoral or subversive this may sound to some, it is you who must always remember that morality, if it is to remain or become morality, must be perpetually examined, cracked, changed, made new, You must remember, however power ful the many who would rather forget, that life is the only touchstone and that life is dangerous, and that without thejoyful acceptance of this danger, there can never be any safety for anyone, ever, anywhere. Not everything that is faced can be changed: but nothing can be changed until it is faced. The principal fact that we must now face is that the time has now come for us to turn our backs forever on the big two-hearted river. The 2nd quotation is by President Kennedy in his introduction to To Turn The Tide by John F. Kennedy, edited by .Tohn W. Gardner. In 1961 the American people awakened as never before to the sober realization of the perils that beset our nation. Early complaints about the harsh sound of candor in the place of complacency gave way to a grim determination to do whatever had to be done to preserve both peace and freedom. There has also been a growing recognition that we must fit our power to our responsi- bilities, and that those tasks which are within our hopes and hopefully within our power cannot all be 'finished in the first hundred days nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet.' But we have begun. Neither wind nor tide is always with us. Our course on a dark and stormy sea cannot always be clear. But we have set sail-and the horizon, however cloudy, is also full of hope. Henry Vinicor, M, D, Board of Education DR. HENRY VINICOR, PRESIDENT MR. RICHARD W. HANN Supervising Principal My best wishes and congratulations to the class of 1962. Your class is entering a fast changing world in which it is impossible for us as a nation to stand still. Each of you must contribute your best so that the free world may survive. 3. Francis W. .Kelly Business and industry in the past twenty- five years have been keenly aware of the vast changes that have taken place in our society. They have also demonstrated that they have learned to accommodate themselves to this rapid, almost incredible, change, As high school students or graduates, you must be sure that your educational preparation takes into account what has happened and will happen in our country by the time you become a more dominant part of our society. Education becomes more demanding, more complex, more necessary, and more rewarding with each passing day. As seniors you have taken a much smaller step in your total education than you would have if you had been graduating in 1900. Perhaps the greatest need in the world todayis for a more highly educated citizenry. I therefore hope that you recognize that this small step is the beginning of a long walk toward the fulfillment of your greatestlcapacity for education and achievement. ,Law Richard W. Hann MR. We may consider ourselves very lucky to have had her with us this year. We learned a lot about her country and about her. We grew to know her as a very sweet and sensitive girl with an overwhelming desire to please. She learned quickly and soon became as adept in using gee, ok and come on as any student from the U,S.A, She has added to our fun and memories in countless ways as our first exchange student. The coach and the boys on the squad worked very hard winning eight games and losing only five during the regular season. Although the team lost the final game of the sectiona1P1ay-off champion- ship to Massena, they should be commended for having a verygood season. We can only hope that the 1962 squad can establish as good a record as their predecessors. Best of luck to the 1962 squad from the Key- stoner Staff. Junior Varsity Baseball -1960 - 61 A ads, ..
