In This edition we will focus aifenfion on a few of fhe many acfivifies we have enjoyed. ll , 2 IN RECOGNITION MISS MERCEDES SULLIV'AN We, the Seniors of Norwood-Norfolk Central School, are happy to recognize in the year of our commencement-Miss Mercedes Sullivan. A graduate of St. Lawrence University, Miss Sullivan ioined the faculty of Norfolk High School as a teacher of English in September, 1947. Many of us did not know her until we moved into the present Junior-Senior High School in 1953. Suffice it to say that, even though we did not have her immediately as an instructor in the in- trjicacies of English grammar, literature, book re- pbrts, and so forth, we were keenly aware of her plesence as a petite person with a strong per- sonality. I She is, foremost, a strict disciplinarian, yet she m nages to assuage our dented feelings with that gli t of humor which is forever lurking in the back ofl er snapping black eyes. I Miss Sullivan is an asset to our faculty, and we wo ld like to have her remain there so that other stu ents in the future may know her as we have kn wn her-a true friend. 0 4 C lv FNIW4 ss It L f iw: 6 Tafrfe ob nvifuifm -Aesemlal Lim Adminisfrafion Seniors - - Classes Afhlefics Music Acfivifies Adverfisers - 6- 'I 3 15-36 37-48 50-58 60-63 65-8 1 82 5 R- A an - : E J, f-C K F, i ng xx ill ii?-i l ' - -1 - il f ff f - Fl- W CND 90 O F l - -yi 2 , ADMINISTRATION We, the Seniors of 1958, exfend our sincere apprecia- fifon and grafiiude fo the adminisfrafion and faculfy who have guided us fhroughouf our school years. 6 BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to Right: Seated: Blanche Martin, Clerk, Dr. Donald Bixby, President, Mr. John Lynch. Standing: Dr. Henry Vinicor, Dr. C, P. Martin, Mr. William Salisbury. Missing: Mr. Kenyon Jones, Mr. Howard Hall, Mr. Russell Colbert, Mrs. Shirley Orologio. Again I consider it a privilege and pleasure to congratulate you, the graduates of 1958. l sincerely trust that the years up to now have been most pleasant and that they will not be easily forgotten. May the teachings of your home, church, school and community be of invaluable service to you in the years to come. I trust that the blessings of the Almighty may go with you as you leave this school and make use of the teachings of the past few years. I urge each of you to always give your best, whether in the field of further education or in other worthwhile endeavors. D. BIXBY 7 Recently my attention was drawn to two adA vertisements carried in a leading industrial publi- cation. The first was a welcome to industry to locate in a certain state and referred to it as The Land of Opportunity. The second was afslogan used by a large industrial firm which stated, Pro- gress is our most important product. I believe you, our graduates, might apply these few very important words to yourselves as you end your high school days. You have made progress on the way to greater opportunity, but you have iust nicely started. Progress should be continuous in your lives because by it, in what- ever area or areas you may choose, opportunity unlimited is yours. Study, work, and make the most of your resources, and I am sure that your lives will be rich and gratifying. I congratulate the class of 'I958 on your suc- cessful completion of high school. R. W. HANN MR. RICHARD W. HANN Seniors of 1958, upon graduation you will find that training institutions, colleges and employers are a great deal more selective than they were in previous years. It will be necessary for you to be much more alert, aggressive and ambitious than graduates of the last few years. The vacancies will go to those of you who will step forward and take responsibility. Best wishes and congratulations to the class of 1958. J. W. KELLY 8 MR. FRANCIS W. KELLY I I I I I , I I I I I I I I I COMMERCIAL AND SOCIAL STUDIES to Right: Mr. Albert Deitz, Mr. Douglas Cropper. HOCKEY The hockey team concluded a successful season with the posting of a 7 win, 6 loss and 1 tie record. All three of the trophy contests: the B-division of the league, the Lake Placid Tourna- ment, and the Clarkson College Tournament were lost by one goal margins-in tact, of the 6 losses, 4 were lost by one goal, with probably the most disappointing moment coming with Alexandria Bay's only, and winning, goal in the Clarkson Tournament finals, coming with but 38 seconds of the game left to play. Next year's team will sorely miss the services of Captain Jim Frego, Willie Wilson and Dick Roady but a strong nucleus of returning veterans will remain, to give us a good start on what we hope will turn out to be a championship team. 5I Left to Rig ht: VARSITY BASKETBALL Kneeling: Coach Baxter, Capt. THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT The music department plays a very important role at NNCS. It is composed of two main divisions-the instrumental section and the vocal section. Ranking high in prominence in the instrumental section is the Senior High Band, composed of over 40 members. It performs with spirit, the bright green and gold uniforms making an impressive sight for all, it has won high ratings during past years in the Spring Festival at Potsdam. Stu- dents spend an apprenticeship in the Junior High Band, while they are members of this group, they acquire skill in playing several different instruments. Last, but not least in his section is the school dance band, the Knights of Rhythm . This group holds a busy schedule playing for various schools around the North Country. All of the instrumental groups are under the direction of Mr. iGeorgei Donovan, who deserves a lot of credit for his fine work. The Symphonic Choir of NNCS has won a great deal of recognition in recent years. It is composed of over 50 mixed voices, and it sings music compared to that sung by college choirs. It, too, has received high ratings at the annual Spring Festival at Potsdam along with the Junior High Glee Club, which must also be recognized for its outstanding work. The Girls' Glee Club is a comparatively small group which meets once each week to sing iust for fun. Lately, the vocal section has been presenting an operetta each year as another of its activities. This provides a great deal ofenioyment for the members of the Cast and chorus as well as the audience. We could never overlook the Bel-Aires, another distinctive group of our school. This is a small but very select group of students who sing popuar music for clubs and other organizations around the area. Esther iEssieD Scott is the director of all the vocal groups, and she also deserves a great deal of recog- nition for her outstanding work with the music students. Newly organized this year is the High-Fi Record Club under the supervision of Mrs. Scott and Mr. Stewart. The members of this group, the same ones that are in the Bel-Aires, meet every two weeks and listen to recordings of standard classics, as well as fine music of a more unusual nature. 63 CHAI..
