H0599 O 1 lllll 2 FOREWORD We the class of 7957 leave the Keystoner as a brief reminder of the many events which occurred during our stay within the halls of our Alma Mater. Our attendance has meant social functions, athletic events, and friendships. Text- books, instructors, midterms, finals, and regents have left many personal impressions on us. In this edition of the Keystonef , we will bring to light only too few of these events. 2 , MISS .HELEN CALNON The student body, faculty, and administration of NNCS were greatly grived upon learning of the death of Miss Helen Calnon. Miss Calnon was born in Potsdam on August 2, 1899. She attended Potsdam High School and was graduated from Potsdam State Normal School in 1922. Her next four years were spent in teaching in a rural school. ln 1927 she came to the Norfolk High School and remained in this system until her untimely death on October 8, 1956. She planned to retire in June of 1957 after having completed thirty-five years in the teaching profession. We use well the word untimely, .because the death of anyone who had so much to contribute and who gave so willingly of that much, as Miss Calnon did, is always untimely. We realize, now more even than we did dur- ing her years with us, iust how much she inspired us to achieve worthwhile obiectives and how hard she worked to guide us toward that achievement. CQ' 4 ,din emurmm RICHARD J. O'CONNOR The entire body of Norwood-Norfolk Central School was shocked by the sudden and untimely death by the car accident of Richard O'Connor on November 1, 1956. He was born in Ogdensburg, New York, on Novem- ber 22, 1936, and attended Norwood-Norfolk Central Schools. He was graduated on June 26, 1956. With his death we all lost a truly fine person. IN RECOGNITION In the spring of '56, our feelings of respect were fully expressed when Miss Ella and Miss Marian were honored by the student body at an assembly. The tremendous silence and then ap- plause could only reflect the great admiration we have had for these two teachers. There was great sadness on the faces of all students who had had them and knew what great teachers they were losing. It is a tribute to Miss Ella's many years of ex- perience that the students have always accepted her advice without questioning. Through her per- severance and many hours of hard work, the eighth graders became full-fledged freshmen. Training given by her has been invaluable not only for our high school years but for the many years to come. All our lives we shall remember Miss Ella, not only as an inspiration to our work, but as a true friend. 2iW if ibmiuisfrafiou LO Y CEN ,gg 90500 O l 'l f llll 2 ' We fhe Seniors wish fo fhank our principals and faculfy for fheir guidance fhroughouf all our school years. Martin, Kenyon Jones, William- Salisbury, Howard Hall, Russell Colbert John Lynch, Shirley Orologio, Blanche Martin, Clerk. The Board of Education welcomes this opportunity to congratulate the graduates of 1957. Soon the affairs of Qur country - yes, even world affairs, will be handed to you and your fellow graduates. Graduation from high school is an important step in your life and demon- strates your worthiness of such trust. You have evinced a willingness to work and, a desire for better preparation for those years allotted tolyou. Again we congratulate you and ask God's blessings on each of you all through life. 7 SENIORS 1957 You are ioining this June a group of young people who have been in high school for four years. They, like yourselves, have been prepar- ing themselves for life. They also have been assisted by parents and teachers in their develop- ment. I hope that this foundation has been good and that you are equipped to face the problems of life. Congratulations and best wishes for the future. FRANCIS W. KELLY 8 To the members of the graduating class of 1957, I should like to turn on the amber light of caution, for a brief moment, on the highway of your lives. As you pause, I would ask that you weigh very carefully the decisions that you have made, or are making, during this your graduation time. Whether it is college, technical training, the armed forces, or immediate employment, consider care- fully which course is best for you. Very often much time and effort are wasted by a hasty approach to a decision that will affect you the rest of your lives. So consider once more that important decision which you have made, and then look up, for the light has changed and you are on your way. l know that you areprepared to carry out your plans to their final completion. My congratulations to you, the graduating class of 1957, on this your graduation day. RICHARD W. HOCKEY With the end of the T956-57 season, Norwood-Norfolk has completely proved its ability to stay with the best. Throughout the 8-game league schedule, our team was beaten by tour teams, which netted a third place final position in Class B competition being surpassed only by Potsdam, Canton and Massena lClass Al. The Class B competitions: League, Lake Placid lnvi- tational Tournament, and Clarkson College Tournament were all won by Canton's powerful team. Credit for the fine season's work should be evenly divided among all of the squad. The team, in most games, was a well-balanced unit, with individualism giv- ing way to team-play. A little extra credit, however, must be given to Jim Frego's exceptional defensive play, to Don LaBarge's handling ability, and to the fine work of the other first and second string' forwards, all of whom contributed greatly to a successful season. Next year's team will sorely miss Don LaBarge's pre- sence in the front line, but with a few additions from the Freshman class, we should be able to come up with another successful season. To Mr. Spotswood goes our deepest appreciation for coaching the boys. He proved to be a very enthusiastic leader and deserves to be credited very highly. 45 Left to Right: VARSITY BASKETBALL Kneeling: Ronald Dufore, Manager, Coach Baxter, Weldon Barkley, Manager. The music department of the NNCS, though it embodies many separate organizations, is divided into two main categories--instrumental and vocal. The instrumental section boasts a fine senior band of over 40 members, who have distinguished them- selves in years past with A-ratings at the annual May Festival in Potsdam. They present a very colorful ap- pearance in their yellow and gold .uniforms, and the music they render is not only the finest in band repertoire, but is performed with finesse and spirit. The Junior Band is, in essence, a laboratory organization, the place where youngsters learn the intricacies of musical instruments and become adept at playing several. Their improvement is most noticeable during this apprenticeship period. y No one needs an introduction to the Knights of Rhythm, that really fine dance band that has caused such a sensation in the North country! We are indeed fortunate to have such a fine group in our midst. We must not neglect to mention the personality behind this fine instrumental program, for without Mr. Donovan's iGeorge!i musicianship and leadership, it never would have attained the acclaim that it now enioys. Now let's take a glance at the vocal department. They represent a newer group, but have won many honors in 'heir short life-time. The Symphonic Choir is a mixed group of over fifty voices who sing the high- est calibre of music attainable in a grade of difficulty comparable with any University or College. They have won A-ratings at the Potsdam May Festival, as have the Junior High Glee Club. These seventh and eighth graders sing high school level music with such fine tone and interpretation that they have called forth many compliments-from other schools and teachers. The Girls' Glee Club is open to all girls who like to get together to sing for fun. There is little-empha- sis on performance or technique. Last but not least is that small but very popular group who call them- selves the t Bei-Aires . These fourteen select voices perform modern classics with a flair and showmanship that keeps their date book well filled during the year. The operetta Springtime, which was presented this year by the entire vocal department, was enthusi- astically received by a large audience. lt proved to be most beneficial to cast and chorus alike. It gives their red-headed vocal director, Esther Scott iEssiei a great deal of real satisfaction to work with such a grand group of young people. lt is the fond hope of both teachers that this department will always function with as much spirit as it has in the past. 58 x L f ,., v.-. ' l LOVE LUCY I Love Lucy, a comedy in three acts, was presented by the Senior class of '57 on Nov. 5 and 6. An uproarious conclusion topped off a developing central plot. The cast, headed by Harriet Wright and Peter Nblnar, had an enchanting time preparing the play.
