Donald Gately, Class of '49, and Cpl. Robert Cutler, Class of '50. It is difficult to express how we feel about these boys whose lives were sacrificed for us and for their country. Because we realize fully the inadequacy of anything we might say of Donald Gately and Robert Cutler, we say of them only, Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine. Cpl. Robert Cutler Cpl. Robert Cutler was born on October 24, 1933. He attended school in Norwood, where he participated in athletics for four years and was a member of the senior play cast in his last year, He was graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School in June, 1950. Cutler joined the army on July 5, 1950 and went to Fort Dix, New Jersey, for his basic train- ing. Later he took a twelve weeks' engineering course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, before being shipped to Fort Lawvton, Washington and thence to Korea, On May 18, 1951, Cutler was declared missing in action and on December 31, 1953 he was de- clared dead. Cutler received the Purple Heart and the Korean Medal, which were awarded to him posthumously. Pfc. Donald Gately Pfc. Donald W. Gately was- born in Norfolk on- May 25, 1931. He attended Norfolk High School where he was active in athletics and where he captained the basketball :team during his senior year. On July 25, 1949, Ga-tely was inducted into the army a-nd went to Fort Dix, New Jersey, for his basic training. The twenty-one years that you have spent at Norwood and the four years at Norwood-Norfolk Central represent much more than a quarter century of work well done. Indeed, the loyal service that you have given to the school children and to the people of your community cannot be easily expressed in a few words. You have worked diligently to instill in us a spirit of sports- manship and of cooperation while always exhibiting these qualities yourself, you have worked many extra hours helping us to make our extra curricular activities successful, you have been an inspiration to all of us. For these reasons we are honored to be able to pay tribute to you this year. 8 92211 O I4 Q' 1 K L S M 2 1 Q J -I IEE' C Q w fo 540000 . , K-XOXOOX' 'W 4 so In years to come, as our memories grow dim, may our Keysfoner remind us of our faculty, teachers and principals, who have all had a part in molding our lives. BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to Right: lst Row: William Salisbury, Mrs. Melissa Carroll-Sup-erintendentg Kinsman Wright-Presi- dent, Mrs. Blanche Palmer-Clerk, John Lynch. 2nd Row: Howard Hall, Donald Bixby, George Dailey, Kenneth MacDonald, Russell Colbert Kenyon Jones. We, the Board of Education, congratulate the Class of 1954 upon the attainment of one of its goals, graduation. Graduation from high school marks the beginning of a new stage in your life and education. New experiences, new opportunities, and new accomplishments await those of you who strive for them. A full and inter- esting life lies ahead ot you in this modern world of ours. It is our hope that you will make the most of the advantages that you have had and that each and every one of you will have cl full .and success- ful life in whatever field of endeavor you choose. 11 lt has been many years since a graduating class has been able to face a future that appears as bright and filled with opportunity as the one that our graduates face at present. You, the graduates of 1954, are members of a vast group of young people who have taken the opportunity to better prepare yourselves for the future by completing your secon- dary education. You have had the many opportunities and ad- vantages of a new building, new courses, and an enriched program. Larger graduating classes of better prepared students give evidence of the adaptability of the program to the needs and abilities of the students. We are proud to be a part of an educational system that constantly strives to meet the needs of our community. Graduates of Norwood-Norfolk Central School may take much pride and satisfaction of accomplishment in. having suc- cessfully completed twelve years of schooling. l hope that many of you will avail yourselves of the opportunities that higher education offers. l am happy to have this opportunity to congratulate the members of the Class of 1954. RICHARD W. HANN, Supervising Principal Senior Class of 1954, you have great opportunities before you. You have available to you the facilities of many institu- tions for further training, if that is what you desire. If your interest is such that you should seek employment, that also should be available in this area with its expected de- velopments. Congratulations, Class of 1954, and may you make the most of your individual opportunities. FRANCIS W. P 2 G A -7 llggll Ng v- R QOX' iftiifos L O We, the Class of '54, have been ex- tremely fortunate in having at our disposal an excellently equipped gymnasium at NNCS. Our physical education teachers have been able to offer a varied sports program during this year with the result that each and every one of us who was interested has been able to find a place for him- self in some phase of our athletic pro- gram. We can't all be on the varsity, but we have all had the opportunity of participating in sports and of shar- ing in the rewards that such par- ticipation inevitably brings. tif! W BASKETBALL Our fifth season of basketball was not a complete success in games won and lost. The team won four and lost twelve games. The greatest handicap was the lack of height. Charles Robare was the team's high scorer with 211 points. Chester Hosmer was next highest scorer wi-th 163 points, TEAM RECORD N NCS 53 OFA NNCS Canton NNCS 47 Potsdam N NCS Massena NNCS 44 Massena N NCS Saranac Lake NNCS 58 Saranac Lake NNCS Malone NNCS 46 Malone N NCS Tupper Lake NNCS 48 Gouverneur NNCS Cant-on N NCS 36 Tupper Lake NN CS Gouverneur NNCS 62 Potsdam NN CS OFA Left to Right: N n lst Row: John Bartlett, Philip Dailey, Charles Robare, Ch-ester Hosmer, Cecil Sawyer, Silas Warriner. 2nd Row: Mr. Stephenson, Coachg Kenneth Dallos, Mgr,g Thomas McGee, Robert Burns, John Shepard, Ronald Bosjolie, James Myers, Joseph Mariano, Mgr.g William Rood, Mgr. 49 BASKETBALL This year's Junior Varsity squad also went through a tough ye-ar. VARSITY HOCKEY The current hockey season began slowly as the team struggled for its first taste of victory. ln league contests, defeats were suffered at the hands of Massena and Fort Covington, along with defeats in non-league contests, to Massena and Potsdam. The climax of the season came when we entered the Clarkson tournament as an underdog, had to play three games within 20 hours to remain in the tournament, but succeeded in outscoring all three opposing teams, Saranac Lake, Fort Cofington and Watertown, by the respective scores of 4-2, 3-l, and 3-2, to win the highly coveted Clarkson trophy. l CLARKSON CLASS B TROPHY Left to Right: Phil Lynch and Ronald Spencer, Co-Captains of 1954 Hockey Team. 52 CROSS COUNTRY Left to Right: Richard Wood, John Steinbarge, Cecil Saw- yer, Richard King, Ronald Bosjolie, Robert Chapin, Gerald LaComb, Donald Chapin, Mr. Kitney, Coach. He's dreamed of peddling through town, getting fond gazes from the girls, and boastfully shouting, Look, no hands! But he still can't persuade Mama and Papa to jar down -to get him one. So, when Pop is called away for a week-long business trip, Mom is persuaded to go with him for sort of a second honeymoon, and the house is left in charge of sisters Connie and Betty Lou, Wilbur gets his idea. He'll make his own money and buy his own bicycle. He'll open up a boarding house right here. Wilbur knows there's a frightful housing shortage, he knows people need places to sleep, and he knows for a whole week he can really clean up and just be rolling in bicycles. So into the paper goes the ad, and that night the whole Maxwell house is crawling with people. First comes Lucy Burns, a sort of walking encyclopedia, then Mrs. Mott, who never says a word all through the play, just comes in, sits down, gets up, and walks out. Then come Ninety-Volt J ones, a beat-up pug, and his wrestling wife, Ruby, they're followed by Mr. Potter, an insurance salesman, and next come Limpy Mc- Guire and his wife, Nora. Now, every room in the house is full, Wi1bur's doing a bang-up business, and then it happens. Mama and Papa Maxwell, at two o'clock the next morning, come dragging home-Papa forgot his brief case. From there on out, it's one mess after another. Papa has an important business conference the next morning, but he has to sleep on the floor, he can't get in to shave, and he can't even read his own paper. Finally, it's discovered somebody in the house is a bank robber, and poor Papa is mistakenly carted off to the clink. What a mess now! But it's all finally straightened out and Wilbur has his bicycle. g vo TEN PER CENT TOMMIE 8th Grade Play Left to Right: lst Row: Linda Mosher, Cynthia Paige, Pearl Ramsey, Sally Connelly, Patri- cia Blanchard, Polly Mellon, Karen Porter. 2nd Row: Richard Matthews, Ronald Richardson, Robert Murray, Mr. Ki-tney, Miss Marion Cranston, Wendell Pettys, Robert Doran, Joseph Sabad, Robert Richards, FRESHMAN BROADCAST tRcdio Free Europej Left to Right: lst Row: Judy Mellon, Sandra Mackey, Constance Wickwire, Mr. Hoffman, Muriel Goodrich, Miss Ever-ett, Alice Davey, Charles Belgarde, Dawn Rich- ards, Donna Cutler. 2nd Row: Mary Gladys Paige, Ronald La- Rue, Joan Christian, James Murray, Joseph McKenna. 71 SENIOR PLAY STAGE CREW Left to Right: lst, Row: Mary Pircsuk, Jessie Grant. 2nd Row: Dawn Colbert, Charles Papp Arloene Brothers.
