The National Honor Society co-sponsored the Regional Leadership Con- ference with Holliston High School this year. Held at Bridgewater State College on November 1 5th, more than 300 students from twenty-eight high schools attended. Representing Norwood in making seminar presentations were Thomas J. Mac Donough and Roderick Smith from the Public Schools, and Dr. Robert Wainer. In pursuing the traditional activities, the Honor Society ran a peer tutoring service which provides assistance to international students as well. Over 5000 Bay State League Hockey Programs were distributed in five towns. $ 1 200.00 was raised from the Phone-a-thon for the American Heart Association. The annual banquet was held at Nick ' s Restaurant on April 6th. Ij ■?% i 1 w ? STUDENT ADVISORS TO SCHOOL COMMITTEE Patrice Wynne. Catherine Doe, Jon Aspell. S 7 EXCHANGE STUDENT, I have been here for one year as an exchange student — and this has been one of the best experiences of my life. I live with my brother and his wife — they are the best host family anyone could dream of! I have learned so many different things here. Mostly all the differences between the U.S. and Norway. All the people are so friendly. I would like to thank some of the teachers and friends for all the support they gave me when I needed it most. Other differences are the food and prices. It ' s really strange I haven ' t gained any weight after all the cheeseburgers I ate here. A cheeseburger at McDonald ' s in Norway is about $2.50. Living in another country as an exchange student has been my dream for the longest time — and it finally became true. I want to end this by thanking you all for making my dream as wonderful as it ever could be. I once visited that school and attended several classes. As I walked through the school, I couldn ' t help but notice the woman who simply could not stop moving around. She danced, and she jumped, and she flailed her arms around while yelling through the hallway. The bell is going to ring; get to homeroom, people. Struggling through my first morning, I encountered a teacher who just could not remember whether or not he had said, Good Morning. In another class the teacher was very interested in having us see The Big Picture. At lunch I noticed a man walking around, as if looking for something, I wondered if perhaps it was for the glasses on his forehead. During the afternoon, I met a teacher who must have thought the entire class was blind. He kept asking, You see? You see? I also encountered a teacher who just could not stop giggling, maybe he thought the man across the hall in the yellow checkered pants was amusing. Or maybe he too found the assignment given by the English teacher to write a twenty line poem on the dumpster experience, amusing. Perhaps it was simply the language barrier, or perhaps I was just not used to their strange customs, but to me it seemed that these teachers had some very strange habits. I ■jj j wondered to myself if anyone else noticed these things, or if it was just me. And so that day, in the high school very far away, ended, and I have lived happily ever after. 1 50 Erin McTernan, Senior When I hear them mocking theirs And wishing theirs were gone, I can only sit and stare And wonder what went wrong. When I tell them this and more, They laugh and view me sadly. They don ' t know that, if given the chance, I would take theirs gladly. If they realize what they have, I hope they hold strong. For when I did (and far too late), All I heard was, She ' s gone. Patrice Wynne, junior Too often I let a word slip; Quickly responding, I will quip In an angry temperament, like a fire is hot, An unjust phrase, a prejudiced thought That I wish I could retract. Oh please, God, let me take it back. Let deeper thoughts reveal The things I truly feel, Rather than these shallow lyrics Emerging from my insensitive lips Like a wild brier among cherry rose hips. But with more profound cogitation, I come upon an unhappy contemplation: Are these superficial conclusions of mine Just passing beliefs, lasting a short time, Or are they really an enduring part Of my moral code — a disturbing thought. Jumping at the chance you brother or sister goes out so you can ear apart their room to find their piggy banks? Well, congratulations, you ' re finally a senior. The cost of being a senior has always been high, and it only gets worse as the year goes on. It all starts in September when everyone signs up for the dreaded SAT ' s. This is only the beginning of the college money we hand out. College application fees have to be paid, trips to colleges have to be financed, and Achievement Tests m be done also. Then, just when you think you ' re going to be able to save some money, the Semi comes. There are dresses and suits to be bought, flowers and boutonnieres to be ordered, and tickets to be purchased. By the time the Semi is over, the Christmas season is upon us and there ' s still no money to spend. You manage to scrape by by giving presents from Stop Shop and hopi no one will notice. Winter falls upon us, and we ' re all dreaming of our Spring Breaks in Florida the Bahamas, or Bermuda. We ' re also dreaming of how we can convince our parents to lend us the money for this educational experience. We arrive back tan and penniless only to shovel out more money to look acceptable on that special night: the Senior Prom. Finally graduation arrives. Your senior year is over. You look back on all the good times you had and don ' t even think about how much money was spent, how many dresses were bought that were worn only once, how many shoes were lost at proms, how many times you went ou to eat and bought for everyone. Isn ' t that what being a senior is all about? Susan Tomasello, senior FACULTY BACK TO THE FUTURE Mr. Bill Lyons has been an English teacher for nine years. He attended Stoughton High and was the president of student council, a Jr. class officer and was involved in Basketball, Football, Tennis, and Cross-Country Track. Mr. Lyons claimed to have been an average student in school. There was one thing specifically about High School I wish was different, states Mr. Lyons. I became very interested in certain topics and I would appreciated more class time to study it in detail. There are 4 main reasons why Mr. Lyons enjoys teaching. 1 — I have always enjoyed working with kids. 2 — My mom was a teacher. 3 — Teaching is a glamourous profession that affords me the wonderful lifestyle that I now live. And most important, 4 — Every day I laugh! When little Billy Lyons was a young lad he said he wanted to be a professional Basketball player — and during offseason, a stuntman in the ' Dukes of Hazzard ' or HeMans Assistant. Mrs. Patricia Tilley has been teaching English her whole life. She attended Norwood High, although she hesitates to reveal such information now. While in high school, Mrs. Tilley played softball, basketball (she was the center), and was on Student Council. She also enjoyed singing in the shower as a teenager. She categorizes herself as a superior (average) and well liked student. When asked what influenced her to become a teacher, Mrs. Tilley automatically responded, lack of guidance. Mrs. Tilley ' s dream as a child was to become either an oceanographer or a beach-bum. Ms. Jean Brady has been teaching English for 1 5 years. She attended Melrose High School. During her H.S. years she was in the Honor Society, Yearbook Staff, Prom Committee, Glee Club ( by accident ), and was also a Cheerleader. I became a teacher because I always liked school, teenagers and learning. When Jeanie Brady was a little girl she imagined herself as either an airline stewardess or a teacher. She dropped the stewardess idea when she later found out she didn ' t like to fly. Mrs. Patricia E. Ingraham has been teaching English forever. She attended Lisbon High, home of Stephen King, in Lisbon, ME. As a student, she participated in many activities. She played the clarinet, managed the softball team, acted in the senior play, and was a cheerleader. Mrs. Ingraham classified herself as a good student. I was the studious type and well organized, but a bit of a nerd. I also talked too much. Mrs. Ingraham was greatly influenced by her Sr. H.S. English teacher who was quite dashing, very exciting, and owned lots of shoes. As a young child Mrs. Ingraham ' s dream was to write Nancy Drew Mystery Stories when she grew up. Mr. Walter Peterson, an English and U.S. History teacher, has been teaching for 29 years. He attended Needham High and worked his way up to Dartmouth College. In high school, Mr. Peterson played the trombone, he classified himself as a very good, well liked student. Although Mr. Peterson originally majored in Civil Engineering in college for 2 l h yrs., it was his Sr. H.S. English teacher who influenced him to teach. He states, I like teaching a lot — I wouldn ' t want to get out. Mr. Peterson ' s childhood fantasy was to become a submarine captain. 151 CONTRO VERSY 1988-1989 school year was certainly a controversial one, both locally and nation- ally. The main spark that kept the local fires burning was the school newspaper THE HILLTOPPER — run by Mr. Lyons. In its first consistent year of publication, the paper managed to stir up some heated lunchroom conversations; but more im- portantly, it was a source through which all classes were free to voice their opinions. One issue that we all followed closely was the decision concerning our senior prom. Throughout THE HILLTOPPER, the un- derclassmen gave their thoughts on the matter, and the seniors were given the chance to let faculty and administration know they planned on salvaging the class of 89 ' s reputation through well-written ar- ticles by Suzanne Decareau, David Provencher, Jeff Donahue, Ethan Flaherty, and others. Prom Faces Cancellation NORWOOD — School officials are threatening to cancel the senior prom be- cause students got drunk at a dance in November, but parents want to know why they weren ' t consulted first. Stories printed in area papers and the Boston Globe over the weekend said the prom had been called off. This morning, school officials said they had threatened to call off the prom unless class members can come up with a self-polici ng plan, but no official decision has been made. We told them we are not going to have a prom the way we had this (November) dance. We want assurances from the stu- dents this wouldn ' t happen again. If we don ' t get assurances, we ' re not going to 152 support it, high school Principal John Piccirilli said this morning. Four students were suspended, one alumnus was ejected and another was arrested because of drunken rowdiness during a semiformal senior dance at- tended by 325 people at a hotel ball- room on Nov. 1 0. We want some ideas. It ' s their dance. Let them be responsible for it. Parking Pandemonium (as usual) Besides the prom controversy, the pa- per was also battleground for the park- ing lot dilemma. This was an especially tight year for parking spaces due to the lack of the formerly free spaces in the faculty lot. With all the new Junior High faculty using these spaces, students are left no choice but to get to school early or park a block or two away. Juniors and Seniors posed their views; however, no solution was decided upon. Good Morning N.H.S.!! ' 89 was a year of firsts — Everyone was excited about the T.V. Communi- cations class ' morning news cast which, with its visual effects, livened up homer- ooms throughout the school. People ac- tually paid attention to the announce- ments. CLASS WARS With the addition of the Freshman class to the school building we started off the year a little too close for comfort, according to sophomores and freshmen (clap clap slap); However, many of the problems were just simple misunder- standings, and before long everyone ad- justed to their new surroundings. Hos- tile feelings gave way to old fashioned class rivalry and Dan Farren incited the competition for Pride Week (whic seniors won) with his article seniors w got it! SRS. - WE GOT IT As winter beckons, the time has com to praise our principal, bask in the glo: called Norwood, and rejoice, for we a. the Mustangs, Norwood Mustangs, there anything else? Because grades 9 and 10 are new N.H.S. and grade 1 1 has little, if an awareness or interest pertaining school events; I have taken the respo sibility upon myself, as Secretary of tl Senior Class, to inform the student boo of a particularly exciting event. The event I refer to is the secoi annual Mustang Pride Day, a merry c casion where all four grades compete decorating their class hall to see whu class has the most school spirit. This jolly festivity will take place Tuesday, November 22, and will judged by esteemed members of t Norwood community.
