I 132 HIS TOR Y DEPAR TMENT A journey through many different worlds — this is the History Department. From Western Civilization to Contemporary Problems, NHS students meet a variety of people, places, and cultures; and experience the aspirations and motivations of people, past and present. jf BUSINESS DEPARTMENT Through the instruction of typing, short- hand, bookkeeping and other skills, the Business Department teaches many useful techniques. These courses are not only for those who wish to enter the business world, but are also useful to other stu- dents. A, S , D, F, J, K, L, ; these are the keys to open many doors. J - 134 MATH DEPARTMENT The Math Department at Norwood High is interesting and informative. The knowledge of mathematical skills is not only useful in technical work, but lends itself to practical information also. 135 PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Physical education is an important part of each student ' s high school educa- tion. Here at Norwood High the opportunities to discover one ' s abilities are never ending. This department aims for the development of correct attitudes toward play. It sets up proper standards of sportsmanship. HOME ECONOMICS AND INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENTS The Home Economics and Industrial Arts programs at Norwood High School are more than just eating, sewing pretty clothes, and making clocks. They develop skills which often lead the student to a lifetime vocation. However, the learning is also combined with fun, as the student is in direct contact with others, often having to work on the same projects. 137 ART AND MUSIC DEPARTMENTS The humanities at Norwood High are constantly expand- ing and broadening the horizons for the students. The Art Department is arranged so that all students of mixed abilities and talents can apply themselves to a variety of creative experiences. The Music Department, as always, invites stu- dents to participate in both vocal and instrumental programs. 138 PEABODY CHRISTMAS PARTY Dec. 12, 1975 139 A Day at Peabody 140 141 Jit vV 142 Juniors 143 Sophomores 144 145 Coming together is a beginning, Working together is success . . . The girls competed in a new league and did well, considering that they had lost fifteen fine senior swimmers. The team ' s new coach was Mrs. Sharon Eagan; she felt that the girls were excep- tionally talented and that the sophomores and juniors will be a team to be reckoned with in the future. It was a tough session with only five seasoned seniors, but we feel that the good sportsmanship qualities displayed will be something to inherit. Our scoring was sad, but our spirit unbeatable. Co-Captains Kristen Larsen and Casey Horsman, with their constant optimism, made the team think they were going to be state champs. To filter it all down, we had a splash of a time. CROSS COUNTRY FINISHES SECOND IN LEA G UE This year ' s cross-country team had a very good season. The team had a 5-3-1 record and, more importantly, finished second in the League Meet. In the Division One State Championship Meet, the Mustangs finished in fifth place out of over 30 teams. The Mustangs were a good mixture of depth and talent. In Senior Captain Rich Hilchey, the Mustangs had an excellent leader who was also a superb runner. Rich ' s season was climaxed with his seventh place finish in the Division One State Championship Race, an amazing feat when one considers the fact that over 1 50 people run in the race. Mike Bruce, one of the best sophomore runners in the state, came in 10th place in the Division One Championship Race. Steve Jackson, an outstanding junior, was plagued by injuries through- out the season. Despite the injuries, Steve was a constant threat for the Mustangs. Steve Swee- ney, a sophomore, Bill Napolitano, a junior, and Scott Brown, a senior, gave Norwood great depth in the four, five, and six spots. The seventh position on the varsity team never belonged to anyone for long, as people were always getting injured. Dave Cronin ran varsity four times, but his season ended prematurely due to a leg injury. George Connolly, Frank Carchedi, and John Kelliher all ran varsity for one race. The work of Coach Mike Scanlon has greatly benefited the Mustangs. In a few short years, Coach Scanlon has brought Norwood into the limelight as a genuine distance power. 195 Soccer Compiles Best Record Yet In 1 975, under the leadership of Coach Giles Parker, the Mustang Soc- cer Team closed out a successful sea- son, finishing with a 6-8-4 record, the best in the team ' s short history. This record can be attributed to the team ' s powerful defense and the bril- liant performance of goaltender Alan Micale. The Mustang scoring drive was sparked by Greg Sullivan and Tom San Giacomo. With about half of this year ' s squad returning next year, the team is expected to be a strong contender for the Bay State League title. Coach Parker and Captains J. Donnelly and A. The Dedham meet was the one where the boys tried their very hardest. This year ' s Captain, Brian Hoffman, along with Coach Doucette, psyched up the team and added moral support. They bounced back from a disap- pointing loss to Framingham South, beat a good Braintree team, and gave League Champ Needham its toughest meet of the year. Outstanding performances were given by the team ' s leading scorers, George Connolly and Captains Rich Hilchey and Jim O ' Neil. Another bright spot for this season and for seasons to come is Mike Bruce, who ran the best mile time in the league. Girls ' Gymnastics Hampered by Injuries The Norwood High Girls ' gymnastics team led by Coach Kathy Feldmann, Assistant Coach Chris Wyman, and Co-cap- tains, Nora Kenny and Debbie Tessitore, finished the season with a 1-7 record. The team ' s record, however, was not a true showing of their potential. The team could have gone 7- 2, but lack of experience and an unusual number of injuries hampered the team ' s winnings. Senior Mary Ann Lore stayed clear of injury and did a fine job competing on both floor and bars. Junior Tricia Green- wood also had a fine year, competing in all four events and placing fifth in the Bay State Conference meet on the balance beam. Girls 9 Basketball The 1975-1976 Norwood High School Mustang Girls ' Basketball Team finished its season with a 1 3-5 record. This year ' s 1 8 game schedule proved especially challenging for the girls as they met each team twice. Coached by Mr. Parker and led by all-star co-captains, Joan Trainor and Leslie White, the Mustangs worked hard throughout the entire season and, as a result, comprised the best overall record in N.H.S. history. The team made some other outstanding achievements over the season, such as defeating a strong Wellesley team for the first time ever and scoring 75 points against Framingham North. Not only that, but the J.V. team, coached by Miss Burt, captured the Bay State League Title with an incredible 17-1 record. It is plain to see that ' 76 was a great year for girls ' basketball at N.H.S. The class of ' 76 is represented on this year ' s squad by seniors: Anne Benson, Joan Trainor, and Leslie White. The team would like to sin- cerely thank all those who attended the games and supported the team, with special thanks to manager Tricia Kenny. J.V. ' S KNEELING: C. Bomber, P. Bossio. Although the team did not get off to a good start, the Mustangs managed to put it all together with the help of captains Billy Walker, Joe Dicalogero, and Brian Green- wood. Rounding out the starting line-up were Chris Collins and John Grim. Also seeing action were J. Harshman, K. Kelly, M. Wilson, P. Taube, and B. Pugh. The team was led by Captain Mike Gulla and assistant captains Jeff Lane and Dave Johnson. Although the team finished in second place in the Bay State League, the Mustangs tied and beat league champion Dedham. In addition to the Bay State League Season, the Don Wheeler coached team qualified for the state tourna- ment. This year is ihe 1 2th time in the past fourteen years that the Norwood team has qualified for the tourney. In the first round of the tourney the Mustangs destroyed Suburban League champion Brookline 9-1 . The next stop for the stangs was the Boston Garden vs. the no. 1 team in the state, Winthrop. After 3 periods and 2 scoreless overtime periods, a Winthrop forward broke free and scored the goal of his life.
