TIOT 1974 NOR WOOD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL NORWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS VOLUME 36 Con ten ts peabody sports activities seniors Dedica tion As the class of 1974 approaches graduation, we find we are missing a member of our class. Mary T. Reagan entered Norwood High in 1971 and was elected Sophomore Class Treasurer. Born in California, one of eight children, Mary moved to Norwood and entered second grade at the Cleveland School. She attended Junior High South and continued on through her junior year at Norwood High. Mary was a favorite among her classmates and friends. Soft- spoken, with a beautiful smile, she possessed an inner sensitivity which brought out her artistic abilities. Her favorite hobbies were music and art. Mary and her family sang as a group and led the congregation at Sunday morning church services. Chosen as one of the selected students for Studio Art in her junior year, Mary planned to further her education in art after graduation. She was a member of Norwood Pulse and a former Norwood Debonnaire. What more can we say? I guess just thank you, Mary, for your friendship. We miss you. Love, the class of 1974 Mary Theresa Reagan When I must leave you for a little while, Please do not grieve and shed wild tears And hug your sorrow to you through the years But start out bravely with a gallant smile; And for my sake and in my name Live on and do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness on empty days But fill each waking hour in useful ways, Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near And never never be afraid to die For I am waiting for you in the sky! Days of Future Passed Recalling our days gone by . . . we look to Ihe future, what does the future hold, that the past has proclaimed? the past had its future . . . and the future has had its past! when we entered norwood high everyone was just a face in the crowd, gradually we formed friendships, and the faces became familiar. we were constantly moving , r w% ' k we planned our actions carefully, striving to do our best. each year offered a different challenge which we faced and conquered. as time went on, we learned to be individuals . . . 10 V each searching for his own style. at times we needed to be alone to gather our thoughts. 11 our social life increased as the years went by. we recognized our need for friendships. IWlltIK ' 13 our three years revolved around studying, socializing, and finding ourselves. norwood high became a separate world within another. ; mrMJt . .1 u- fi T u Dr. Philip O. Girls ' Ice Hockey I ' he Norwood High Girls ' Ice Hockey Team began its third season this year under the direction of Mr. Bob Chf- ford and Mr. Peter Mollo. Since so many attended tryouts (close to 100), it was necessary to split the girls into two segments — a traveling team, who played other town teams, and a second team, who scrimmaged and worked on their hockey playing. Both teams practiced at Westwood Ice Arena on Tuesday afternoons. Such hard work and dedication should be commended, as the Girls paid for their own ice and found their own transportation and equip- ment. Also, the coaches gave up much of their spare time to run a team that would otherwise be non- existent. What about the name of the team? It seems that it will just be carried on from last year and will be kept under cover. For a while, anyway. In P. It broadens students ' abilities and interests and prepares them for a continuation of their education in the scientific field. History Departm en t The History Department gives students an opportu- nity to observe the vast world around them. The huge selection of courses offered by the department, not only gives students a deeper understanding of other civilizations, but also gives students a greater understanding of themselves. 131 Business Department The Business Department prepares students for secretarial and business careers. It gives students the necessary skills for succeeding in these fields in the future. 132 Ma th em a tics Departm en t The Math Department is an integral part of the Norwood High School scene. Courses are varied in content and rel- ate to our computer. This year Norwood High had a Math teacher, Mrs. Jones, from England. Mr. Buscone, a Nor- wood High Teacher, taught in Great Britain in an exchange program. Most students feel that the NHS Math Department is an essential doorway to an interesting future. 133 Home Economics and Industrial Arts Departments .Frequently, one smells the tempting aromas near room 14. This is the result of the Home Economics Department, where students learn the arts of cook- ing, sewing and other skills which characterize homemak- ing. Nearby, the steady hum of the industrial arts machines fills the air. Here the skills of wood- working, metal working, print- ing, and mechanical drawing are taught. 134 Music and Art Departments The Music Department offers a wide variety of courses which extend from band and chorus to music theory. Music provides an interesting and rewarding experience for students. Further down the hall, one can observe the creation of all forms of art, from clay figures to silk screening. The courses offered by the Art Department give students a deep insight into the world of art. 135 Physical Education Department The Physical Education Department offered a new aspect of gym, not seen during any other year. The system of co- ed electives every four weeks enhanced the format of the department. It was a new experiment which proved to be quite satisfactory. STUDENT COUNCIL 1973-74 Under the guidance of Mr. Usevich, the council was highly democratic and progressive. This year Elections were held in simulated polls at the school, and members to the council were voted from each class, rather than from individual homerooms. The council concerned itself with the idea of unity. It was active in community affairs with the senior citizens, with other councils from various schools, and with the people and students of Norwood in general. The student council sponsored its annual Senior Auction and, as a new activity, The Clipper Wheelchair Basketball Game. Norwood Caps were also made available to the school ' s population as another fund raising event. A new idea and purpose was established for the future councils. The fine leadership of President, Kevin Glynn; Vice President, Dale Ecklholm; Treasurer, Marie Gross; and Secretary, Maggie Gross yielded a productive year. 152 SENIOR REPRESENTATIVES ROW 1: E. The development of the characters by the inspired cast was parallel with professional dramatics and a rarity in the annals of Norwood theater. The performances were applauded with enthusiasm, and one performance, in particular, conducted in behalf of our senior citi- zens was sincerely enjoyed by both audience and cast. BRAVO! G. MUSTANGS HAVE EXCEPTIONAL SEASON The Norwood Mustangs, under head Coach John Duffy Doherty, ended an exceptional season with a 5-4 record. The Mustangs started out strong as they went undefeated in their first three games. With the combined efforts of Coaches Doherty, and Levin, the offense scored a total of 129 points for the season. Under the direction of Mr. Jack Bones Martinelli and Coach Crimmens, the defense gained two big shutouts over two previously undefeated teams, Needham and North. We lost to the four top teams by a total of 10 points. Needless to say, this fine record could never have been accomplished without the great leadership of co-captains, Dave Saad and Johnny O Oldham. Next year ' s team promises to be one of the top contenders in the Bay State League with many return- ing veterans. The graduating seniors wish them the best of luck. 177 Hudda, Coach Doherty, Johnny O. All-Star Mike Brennan Carl, Coach Martinelli, and Nick. The tough 178 Paul, Carl, Micca, Nicky, Ginter. Captains Kathy Smelstor and Janet Lanzoni led the team in spirit, which showed as the girls gave their all in every game. Under the superb coaching of Mrs. Dapsauski and Mrs. Feldman, the girls had a 0-5-3 record. Leaving the team this year will be the majority of this year ' s varsity team, including: Anne Morse, Kathy Judge, Betsy Shelton, Alice Kelly, Sue Allen, Kathy Smelstor, Sue West, Sue McSweeney, Janet Lanzoni, Doreen Auciello and Joanne Skowronski. Their record of 5-9-2, however, did not reflect upon the ability of the team as the Mustangs held their own with the best teams in the tough Bay State League. Seven of their defeats were one goal decisions. The Seniors led the team well with Dan Carey, Greg Walker, Bill Doucette, Mike Denzer, John Orfanides, and Jack Girvan doing well. After a very disappointing season last year, the girls came back with true Norwood form. The final record was 5-4, putting the team in fourth place in the Bay State League. It was a record breaking season, also. The previous record of 5-0 was smashed to pieces when Norwood beat Ded- ham 68.8-56. The team was led by three seniors: Kathy Judge, Linda Lucchini, and Pat O ' Neil. Coaches, Mrs. Feldmann and Miss Locke, should be commended for making this team what it was. Its 8-1 record was attributed to the hard work and determination of the team, as well as to the never-ending efforts of head Coach Martinelli and Assistant Coach Rukstalis. This year the team finished second in the Bay State League with its only defeat being against first place finisher Needham. The season was highlighted by big wins over Natick, Braintree, and Dedham, and by great individual per- formances. Senior Tom Mahan captured the Class B Hurdle Championship and also set the school record in high jump. The relay team, consisting of Greg Nel- son, Don Walsh, Joe Andrea, and Tom Mahan, turned in the league ' s best time this year against Needham. Senior Co-Captain Bruce Hadley, through hard work, holds the school record in the two mile. Other hard working seniors included: Jack Hohman, Mike Trovato, Frank Giampietro, Bob Chambers, Ted Davenport, Roger Eysie, John Curtin, Joe Cataffe, Mike Driscoll, and Co-Captain Kevin Dold. Next year ' s team, despite the loss of 14 seniors, should be a top contender. Best of luck to them and their coaches: K. Led by their coach, Mr. Parker, the girls did an outstanding job, ending their season in 4th place with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses. The Mustangs were led by captain and high scorer Kathy Smelster. The line- up was completed by three juniors: Dianne Erickson, Leslie Rossi, and Kim Lindgren; and one sophomore, Leslie White. Completing the roster were sen- iors, Joann Skowronski and Sue McSweeney; juniors, Karen Anderson, Cathy Wong, Jean Ellis, and Pam Floyd; and sophomore, Joan Trainer. The girls ended their season with a tough loss to Wellesley which kept them out of the tourney. Congratulations to J.V. coach Kathy Burt who led the J.V. Team to a record of 5 wins and 4 losses. Basketball Has Excellent Season The ' 73- ' 74 Norwood High Basketball team, Coached by Ken Nolet, had one of its finest seasons ever as they fin- ished the year with an excellent 13-5 record. This was good enough for third place in the Bay State League and a state tourney berth. Inconsistency plagued the mustangs through the early sea- son as they struggled to a mediocre 5-4 record at the mid- season point. After some strategic coaching moves by Coach Nolet, the mustangs ripped off an eight game win- ning streak, losing only its final game to league champion Dedham. The team was led by captain, Jim Crook, who was an all star and also the Bay State League scoring champion. He was joined in the starting lineup by seniors, Kevin Glynn, Nick Fanandakis, Gary Olshan, and all star junior, Larry Brown. Juniors Tim Collins and Steve Savage played a great deal and sparked the team to many victories. Sen- iors, Jim Savage, Peter Hartshorn, Paul Glynn, Tom White, and P. J. McSweeny also contributed greatly to the team. The Mustang Hoopsters Represented Norwood well in the tourney, although they bowed out to a powerful Needham team 49-41. Norwood played with the spirit and hustle which typified them all season long and which should continue into the 1974-75 season. Gary Olshan 206 Bench Captains: P. J. The squad captured sec- ond place in the Bay State League. Hustle was the Mustang ' s motto as they were the fastest skating team in the league. The State Tournament was, as usual, exciting. The team won the 1st round, 6-3 vs. Quincy, and bombed Beverly 11-1 with nine players figuring in the scoring department. The Quarter final was a heartbreaker against arch-rival Arlington, as Nor- wood clearly outplayed them in every aspect of the game, except scoring, and lost 3-1. Four players were selected to the BSL All Stars: Capt. Greg Walker, Assistant Capt. Mike Smith, Frank Baglione, and Bill Flaherty. Other performers were Seniors, Roger Battles, Dan Bayer, Mike Denzer, and John Quigley; Juniors consisted of Dennis King, Jim Grimm, Jeff Tenney, Ken Muse, John Riley, and Kevin Hawley. Sophomore surprises were goalie Mike Gulla, and third liner Billy Clark. Seniors Manny Collins and Gary Shaw worked especially hard for the Mustangs. Recognition should also be given to manager John Hayes who was invaluable to the team.
