ORLANDO SCAFATI Mr. Orlando ScafatI retired this year after twenty-two years of service in the Norwood School System. When Coach ScafatI arrived in 1946 to coach three of the varsity teams for boys, the athleti c curriculum was very limited. There were only five varsity sports for boys, and two for girls. Mr. ScafatI, as athletic director, enlarged the program in his quest for good sportsmanship among Norwood hiigh students. Thanks to Mr. Scafati, boys can now participate in fourteen varsity sports, while the girls ' program has Increased to six. The Tlot staff and the Class of 1973 take great pleasure in dedicating this year ' s edition of the Tiot to Mr. Andy Scafati. 11 Dr. Philip O. Coakley Superintendent of Schools Mr. Umber+o C. And when ' er her sons are fighting, And would rather die than yield, You can hear the school that backs them up Go singing down the field. Oh Norwood, dear Norwood, we sing to you, We will be loyal to your flag of blue. And Norwood, dear Norwood, as years go by. Here is a cheer Rah! Rahl Here is a cheer Rah! Rah! Cheer for Norwood High. 122 ' .: ' . ' mm i s 123 Left to Right: Mike Caron, Dary, Den,bon, Ellen Lovell, Lauren Power. Richard Kennedy, Jimmy Nola OUR FINAL YEAR CLASS HISTORY Once again early In September we returned to the Hill, but this time we felt somehow different. This, our senior year, was the last time the class of 73 would return to NhHS. We prepared well in advance for this year ' s success by electing In June of our junior year capable class officers: President, Richard Kennedy; Vice President, Daryl Denison; Treasurers, Lauren Power and Jim Nolan; Secretary, Nancy Kelley; and A. A, Representatives, Ellen Lovell. and Mike Caron. These class leaders, assisted by our able Student Council President, Dave Ahearn, conducted many successful events, including a delightful semi-formal at the beautiful Blue Hills Country Club. The fun-filled Senior Auction was enjoyed by all who participated. And who was that lucky junior girl who bought as her slave our foreign exchange stu- dent, Lueder Bauschulte? The many varied talents of Pdm Rodgers were displayed In the hilarious Up the Down Staircase, our Senior Play. Duke Manfro, Debbie Ceglla and John Blanchard, were also fea- tured. The cast was ably directed by Mrs. Buscone and was enjoyed by all who saw it. 124 Our athletic teams were winners — well, that is, more or less! Stimulated by a rugged practice schedule our football team, under the direction of Coach Doherty, jumped into its tough schedule. Unfortunately, it wasn ' t a winning season, but the thrilling tie I 6 to 16 with rival Walpole and the tri- umph over Dedham on Thanksgiving Day were high spots for all of us. Our praises to captains Mike Roberts and Keith Rogers and all the senior members of the squad for a job well done. We were extremely fortunate during the winter season when three Norwood teams were fighting for championships in the Bay State League. Our youthful basketball squad, cap- tained by Brian Brown and Mark Hersey, fought down to the wire and barely missed qualifying for the State Tourney. hHaving graduated most of our State Championship team of 1972, the hockey team ' s future was a big question mark. After a faltering start, the team began to work together and a fantastic effort rewarded this real team with second place In our competitive league and a qualifying berth in the State Tourney. The captains, Kevin hlurley, Mark Balerna, and Paul O ' Day, led this determined team. Not to be outdone, the wrestling team, captained by Frank Civatoni, took second place in both the Bay State League and the Regional Tournament. Few will ever forget May 18th, the night of the long awaited Senior Prom. The Chateau de Ville was the setting for our biggest social event of the year. Perhaps a wonderful omen for us, the class of 1973, was that peace was finally acquired when this year was still brand new. We shall be the first class in eight years to graduate into a peaceful world. We have made some happy history here at Norwood High. May our class members continue to be happy and keep this peace. Patricia Phalen, Class hHistorian. 125 i H I STUDENT LIFE J u N O R S 128 129 SOPHOMORES For the sophomores September of 1972 marked the beginning ot an excit- ing year at Norwood High. To start off the year we held our class elections. The results were: Larry Brown, President; Steve Savage, Vice- President; Carolyn Saad, Secretary; Kathy McQuire, Girls ' Treasurer; Paul Eysie, Boys ' Treasurer; Paula Spierdo- wis. Girls A. A. Representative and Tommy Aligieri, Boys ' A. A. Represent- ative. As far as sports are concerned, we had a very good year. The football sea- son, under the direction of Mr. Whitty and Mr. Carroll was memorable. The captains of the football team were Daryl Stampfl and Billy Breene. The basketball team, under Mr. Immonen, also did very well with the help of cap- tain, Terry Johnson. Sophomores Billy Flaherty and Dennis King had an out- standing year for the varsity hockey team. The first year at Norwood hiigh for the class of ' 75 was both enjoyable and rewarding. Carolyn Saad, Secretary Class of ' 75 Standing: Kathy McQuire, Larry Brown, Paula Spierdowis, Carolyn Saad. Seated: Steve Savage, Tom Aligi eri, Paul Esyie. 130 JUNIORS The class of 1974 entered Norwood High In September to accept our new role as juniors. The election of class officers had been carried out in the spring of our Sophomore year. As a result, Secretary, Mary Anello; Boys ' Treasurer, Bill Doucette; and Girls ' A. A. Lynn Schiano were re-elected. In addition, newly elected officers were chosen, among them, Danny Donovan, President; Mike Collins, Vice President; Joan hiarwood, Girls ' Treasurer; and Paul Glynn, Boys ' A. A. Our class was well represented by both boys and girls who participated In varsity and junior varsity sports. The varsity teams were faithfully cheered by veteran cheerleaders Jean Carchedi and Lynn Schiano, and by newcomers Betty Russell and Ellen McTernan. In addition, a J. V. cheering squad was formed by members of the sophomore and junior classes under the leadership of Captain Nancy Brown. On October 25th our class sponsored a rock concert, which was open to the entire student body. This concert pro- vided us with the necessary funds for the highpoint of our junior year, the prom. On March 30th at the Blue Hills Country Club, our Junior Prom was held. Due to the generous efforts of our friend and advisor, Mr. Usevlch, it proved to be a memorable occasion for all who attended. In all, our Junior year at Norwood High School proved to be as exciting as we had hoped it would be. Though we are sorry to see it come to an end, we eagerly anticipate our senior year at the school on the hill . ' 152 AFS STUDENTS WHAT CAN I TELL YOU? i like America! I like Boston! I like Norwood and its people, and I like Norwood High School as far as a scholar nnay say so. I feel really at home here. You might ask what is different from where I came. I could name thousands of things; but, in the end, I would summa- rize people and life as basically the same. I hate to compare where I came from with where I am now, because my values are no measurement. I have seen many places: Boston, Washington D.C., Hartford, Salem, Newport, Plymouth and others. I have learned a lot: opin- ions about Vietnam, Europe, Germany, and current affairs. I lived an American life. All this and more I will take home, and it probably will last until I come back; and I will, you can be sure of that. Lijeder Bauschulte Although I knew Malaysia to be quite small, suddenly it was a whole new world opening up for me to see. I knew it would be one of the greatest experi- ences of my life. I ' ll never forget finding out that my host family did not speak English; and due to the rural area, it was doubtful that anyone would. I had to learn MY MALAYSIA Malay very quickly. I ' ll always remember: my first bowl of Malayan rice with curry fish; the large amounts of fresh fruit juice; shopping in the open market, bargaining with the merchants; or being stared at for my unusual and rare facial colormg. My overwhelming anticipation throughout an eighty-four mile taxi ride to my host family, standing with suit- cases in hand rehearsing over and over again Sclarat Pagi. (Good Morning) However, the old line still holds true, There ' s no place like home! I even looked forward to Norwood High reopening after attending uniformly regimented school life in Malaysia. STUDENT COUNCIL 1972-1973 This year was a new one for the Student Council. Members were voted at-iarge from each class, rather than representing individual homerooms as in previous years. Mr. Usevich continued his fine leadership as advisor with a new system of open meetings being initiated. Each meeting was rotated to a different period during the year, allowing interested students to participate in student government. The problems faced by our Council were many, including the unpopular corridor situation and the continued problem of student parking. Ted Curtin and hiilary Sallet, our representatives on the School Committee, did an outstanding job of voicing the student viewpoint. The Student Council again held the Senior Auction in the boys ' gym, annually one of the most successful functions held at Norwood hiigh. All those who attended had a great evening and day of fun. The Council ended its fine year under the leadership of President, Dave Ahearn; Vice President, Dale Eckholm; Treasurer, Trisha Herlihy; and Secretary, Carol Ann Deneno. The concert band and chorus performed an enjoyable Christ- mas concert, and the band, after a three week summer tour of Europe, has almost doubled in size. This year for the first time, the Madrigal Singers accompanied the band on an exchange concert to hlam- ilton, Ontario, Canada. For the first time also, Norwood hHigh had a representative to the All Eastern Chorus. Pamela Rodgers was selected to the chorus, which is com- prised of high school vocalists from the East coast. This year held a lot of firsts for the music department here. As in the past, the various music ensembles remained active in performing for the community and will continue to do so in the future. Music is one of the universal languages and forces which have brought many people together. This is one of its major functions at Norwood hHIgh. STAGEBAND OFFICERS B. Fox, J. Coccia, P. Paquette, R. Nine places on the varsity were taken by seniors, who led the teann to a 14-1 record and a second place finish in the Bay State League, the only loss being to champion Dedham. The seniors were led by Captain Frank Ciavattone, who went undefeated through the season and veterans. Rick Campbell, Rick Rahn, and Paul Lazzaro. Mike McCarthy, Pat McDonough, and Jack Ferrari stepped up from the J.V. ' s, but the amazing story was the first year heroics of Gary Lee and Keith Rogers. Both boys came up with many clutch performances in their very first year of competitions. Juniors Chuck Hopkins and Carl Puzin showed great promise for next year, along with sensa- tional sophomore Sam David, who was undefeated in his weight class. The efforts given by these representatives of the class of 73 during this season will remain as an example for future wrestling teams at Norwood hiigh. W. Mahn Row I: S. Costello, S. Tosto, R. This year ' s squad however, pulled through with a respectable 5-8 record, despite plaguing injuries and illnesses. The team was ably led by seniors Bruce Boyd, Dan Burns, Randy Corwin, Terry Coverstone, and Gary Davis. Coach Allen Car- ver should be commended for the fine job he has done at Norwood High in the wake of his recent retirement from coaching. The team would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Carver for his efforts. Good luck to next year ' s coach and team. Dan Burns IS8EN Terry Coverstone 201 GIRLS ' BASKETBALL The 1972-73 Girls ' Basketball Team may have had a losing season, buf they won all their games in spirit, led by their talented coach, Mr. Giles Parker. This was the first season for the Nor- wood Jolly Squad who cheered the Mustang Five at all those close games. The Mustangs were led by co-cap- tains, Patti Phalen and Cindy Stewart. Top scorers for the season were Cindy Stewart, and junior Kathy Smelstor. An outstanding sophomore, Leslie Rossi, and a veteran senior, Kathy MacD- onald, completed the starting line-up. Sophomore Pam Floyd also did a fine job in the rebounding department this season. Completing the roster were jollies senior May Croft and juniors, Janet Lanzoni and Sue McSweeney, and the back-up duo, senior Carol lacono and Joanne Skowronski. Congratulations to Miss Kathy Burt and her J.V. team who had an 8-1 record. Our thanks to our managers, Diane Mastandrea and Peggy Linehan, who kept things in order. Coach Ken Nolet ' s hoopsters finished with an 11-7 record, only two games behind the first place club in the Bay State League. Twc losses at the end of the season kept the Mustangs out of the State tournament. Nine seniors were on the 72- 73 Mustang squad. Co-captain guards, Mark Hersey and Brian Brown, and all star forward Jack Glynn, all seniors, started every game and played a big part in the Mustang ' s drive for the title. First player off the bench for Coach Nolet was senior forward, Steve Brennan. Other seniors on the team were Roger MacLeod, Bob DePietro, John White, John Gillis, and Jim Nolan. Junior Jim Crook and sopho- more Tim Collins were starters this past season. Jim Crook, cap- tain of the 73-74 squad, and Tim Collins, sophomore of the year in the BSL, should form a great nucleus for next season ' s club. D AL • , SOPHOMORE TEAM HOCKEY The 1972-73 Norwood High Hockey Team compiled a 13-2-2 record in the Bay State League which earned them second place. This was a disappointment to both the coaches and the players because Norwood ' s record during the latter part of the season was a very respectable I 1-0-2. Defensive lapses and lack of scoring plagued the Mustangs through the first seven games. However, during the second half, Norwood gained confidence and playing experience. Unexpected performers who played extremely well were seniors Mike Costello, Ed McQuaid, and Nick Patsos; juniors Mike Smith, Manny Collins, and Roger Battles; and sophomores Billy Flaherty and Dennis King. Greg Walker led the team in scoring with 26 points which earned him a spot on the BSL All-Stars with teammates Mike Costello and Bob Lawrie. Performing well for the Mustangs were goaltenders Fred Carbone and Manny Collins; seniors Paul O ' Day, Mark Balerna, and Captain Kevin Hurley; and junior Peter Thomas. Some fine hustle was also turned in by juniors Frank Baglione and Danny Bayer who should be stellar performers next year. Paul O ' Day Row I: R. Lawrie, M. Denzer, R. Battles, M, Collins, F. Elected officers, home- room representatives and alternates, and two faculty advisors stimulate the spirit of pride and achievement through their accept- ance of student body responsibilities, creative planning of school functions, and mature response to special school needs. The autumn Harvest Fair was a tremendous success this year as a fund-raising event, as well as a catalyst of school spirit and fellowship. Baked goods, balloons, antiques, boutique items, and clothes galore were welcomed and appreciated by the many community members who enjoyed the sunny day with us. Operation Santa Glaus is a Student Representative Organization project where students remember children less fortunate by giving gifts and contributions to the needy and hospitalized. Also during the holidays, full course dinners with the complete festive charm and program were sponsored for Thanksgiving and Christmas. With the funds earned from the Harvest Fair, the students and faculty enjoyed a wonderful evening of dinner and a perform- ance of Funny Girl at the Ghateau de Ville. The evening was indeed one to remember and treasure. The Awards Program at the closing of the school year honors those graduating and those winning special awards and scholar- ships. Elected officers for the year 1972-1973 were: President, Paul Gullivan; Secretary, Janice Davis; Treasurer, Joanne Olsen. 228 DECA MEETING Louise Davitt, Treasurer; Deborah Durling, Vice President and Fund Raising Chairman; James Meau, President; Mrs. Elizabeth K. Under the expertise coaching of teachers Mr. Clifford, Mr. Donahue, and Mr. Mollo, the team practiced for long and exhausting hours. Backbreaking pond shoveling and 6:00 A.M. Sunday morning practices are just a few of the sacrifices the dedicated girls made, but their efforts paid off against such renowned teams as the Pembroke Pandas of Brown University and the Massport Jets. Team members were Tri-Captains Anne Clifford, Mary Ellen D ' Espinosa, and Janet Polovitch; seniors Chris Anderson, Joan Callahan, Joyce Coccia, Patty Curran, Daryl Denison, Trisha Herlihy, Karen Krohto, Barbara Lightizer, Anne Zamboni MacPhee, Annemarie Millin, Rosemary O ' Brien, Jody Phalen, Kathie Roche, Sue Sprague, Cindy Stewart, Deb- bie Tatro and Martha Tully; junior Pam Clifford; sophomores Karen Anderson, Jean D ' Espinosa, Sandy Krohto, Mary Lawrle, and Sue Skene and managers Debbie St. Cyr and Danni Brown. 77A ' ■ ' :J 4 A y v ■I!
