SECOND TIME AROUND In September, 1968, the Class of 1971 returned as Soph- omores to N.H.S. with nonchalant ease, proudly aware of the fact that they were no longer the youngest class on the Hill. They were prepared to face the new and greater responsibilities and challenges which confronted them. The outcome of the election of class officers was, for the most part, the same as last year ' s. The exceptions were the election of Ellen Donovan as Secretary and Eileen Crook as Girls ' A. A. Representative. Those who were re-elected were: Paul Hartnett, President; Steve Kennedy, Vice-President; Joyce Gallagher, Girls ' Treasurer; Cameron Kelley, Boys ' Treasurer; and Patrick McQuillan, Boys ' A. A. Representa- tive. The Sophomore Party, the first social event, was extreme- ly successful. The theme was Purple Haze and the music was provided by the popular Backstreet Journal. It was held in the girls ' gymnasium which was smashingly decorat- ed by over one hundred Sophomore students. It was a very exciting and satisfying evening. Outstanding members of the Class were: Eileen Crook, who was the only Sophomore selected to the varsity cheer- leading squad; Paul Hartnett, who showed his tremendous athletic ability while competing on the varsity football and basketball teams; the football team was also well-supported by sophomores Robert Dickenson, and Pat McQuillan and the basketball team by Joseph Porcello and Richard Soper. Philip Nolfi, John Clifford and Robert Thornton helped to carry the hockey team through another fantastically success- ful season. With the knowledge and experience gained during the first two years at Norwood Senior High, the distinguished Class of ' 71 was ready to return to the Hill as upperclass- men. 1971 OFFICERS AS JUNIORS Standing: Kelley, Macauley, Pucci, McQuillan, Assad. Sitting: Kennedy, Donovan. ONWARD, UPWARD, AND ALMOST THERE! The gap was closing and our goal was in sight! The un- daunted class of ' 71 had embarked on its next to last scho- lastic year. The election of officers was our first major concern. After a very heated campaign, Steve Kennedy narrowly defeated veteran Paul Hartnett for the Presidency, in an election in which every member of our class anxiously awaited the re- sults. Other new officers were Vice-President, Chris Macau- ley; Girls ' Treasurer, Chris Pucci; and Girls ' A. A. Representa- tive, Hellas Assad. Those who were re-elected were: Secre- tary, Ellen Donovan; Boys ' A. A. Representative, Pat McQuil- lan. There were many Junior boys who played well for the varsity athletic teams. Bob Thornton, Phil Nolfi, and Jackie Clifford contributed to the success of the hockey team. Joe Porcello, Rick Soper, Chris Macauley, Joe Johnson, and Captain Paul Hartnett were the backbone of the basketball team. Pat McQuillan, Cameron Kelley, Paul Hartnett, and Bob Dickenson were among the outstanding football players. Continually displaying their energy and talents were the Junior cheerleaders: Eileen Crook and Mary Rizzo, the latter in her first year on the squad. Twenty-five juniors qualified for the National Honor Socie- ty. Two juniors were chosen as semifinalists in the Foreign Exchange Program, Patty Maclnnis and Nancy Blaisdell. Patty finally won the opportunity to spend the summer in Bel- gium. Spring heralded the arrival of the annual Junior Prom which was held at the Motel 1 28, on May 8th and proved to be very successful. Finally a year filled with hard work, merriment, and sur- prises came to an end. A Yer, oj, Ffosfc OUR SENK P HISlORV In September we seniors returned to N.H.S., knowing that it would not be for a long time, but a good time. We were also ready to accept the fact that we, as seniors, would be the lead- ers of the student body. But first we had to elect the leaders of our class. The election of the same slate of officers as last year confirmed our choices as juniors. We voted Steve Kennedy, President; Chris Macaulay, Vice-President; Ellen Donovan, Sec- retary; Cameron Kelley and Chris Pucci, Treasurers; and Pat McQuillan and Hellas Assad A. A. Representatives. Gonzalo Ostria, our exchange student from Bolivia, has cer- tainly been a great addition to our class. His candidness and 114 matter of fact attitude showed that he had no difficulties in adjusting to our language and way of life. Gonzo stayed with Patty Rizzo ' s family while he was in Norwood. In October, we continued the tradition of previous classes by conquering Blue Hill and hanging the banner at the top. We then presented the 3rd annual Senior Auction, an event at which many seniors were auctioned off to underclassmen. They had to carry their books, buy their lunches, and take their masters to the dance that night. There was more money earned, and more excitement generated in this year ' s auction than ever before. On December 4th and 5th, our Senior Play, You Can ' t Take It With You, was presented under the direction of Mr. Alan Wagg. Many seniors participated in this production. The lead- ing performers were Billy Stevens, Guy Cisternelli, Nancy Davis, Peter Farioli, Cheryl McQuire, Betty Mcintosh, and Bob Doucette. This was, without a doubt, one of the most successful productions ever at Norwood High. This year ' s HILLTOPPER has certainly made its impression on the school. It has been known for its somewhat controversial ar- ticles. Editors-in-Chief were Mary Pat Curran and Eileen McA- voy. Mr. Davis contributed his time, talents and energies while serving as faculty advisor. The Student Council was ably led by President, David Boch; Vice- r resident, Mike Lowey; Secretary, Hellas Assad; and Trea-  ort lanice McDermott. Their major successes were the Senior Auction, the Globe Santa drive, and the Student Council Carni- val. This has undoubtedly been the most successful and reward- ing year for the senior athletes. The football team, captained by Chris Macaulay and Pat McQuillan, and supported by Bob Dickenson, Cameron Kelley, Pc i Hartnett, Jimmy Murphy, Mike Piccirili, Scott Hutchens, and Scott Williams, posted a re- spectable record. The triumph over Dedham on Thanksgiving was the highlight of the season. Our basketball team had its most successful season ever, posting a 14-4 record and finishing third. This was good enough to qualify for the Tech Tourney in which the team reached the uarter-finals. The top seniors on the team were Co-Capts. Paul Hartnett and Joe Porcello; Joe Johnson, Rick Soper, Chris Macaulay, and last but not least, Dick Erdman. Mr. Nolet, who was voted the most outstanding coach in the league, was one of the determining factors in the team ' s suc- cess. He was able to withstand all the crazy antics of this year ' s team, which he termed his insanest squad ever. The hockey team reached a new plateau this season, displaying an unblemished 16-0-2 first place record. This is the first time a Norwood team has finished its regular season ' s play undefeated. Tri-Capts. Bob Thornton, Phil Nolfi, and Jack Clif- ford led fellow seniors Bob Rosata, Ted Curtis, Bill Sullivan and John Lawrie throughout its fantastic season. Also selected as most outstqnding coach was Mr. Wheeler to whom we are all grateful for his never give up attitude. In the tourney Nor- wood had a 4-1 record, their only loss being to Arlington in the Final by a score of 3-0. This year ' s wrestling team rose to due prominence as it fin- ished the season as co-champs in its league. Gary Sheehan, John Reynolds, and John Moynihan were Tri-Capts. under coaches Compagnone and Hexter. Gordon Smith won the State Championship for his performance in the State Meet. All of these teams were supported by senior cheerleaders, Mary Rizzo, Chris Pucci, and Capt. Eileen Crook. The cheer- leaders also won the annual Bay State League Cheering Com- petition at Needham for the first time ever. On May 29th, the Marriott Hotel came alive with the excite- ment of the much-awaited Senior Prom. It was a fitting close to a year of many and great social events. June ' s here and our high school days are over. But most of us will agree that they were days we will never forget. Days of learning, days of fun; days of success, days of failure; days of triumph, days of defeat; and most important of all June 6th, 1971, Graduation Day. This year marked the first time in years that the en- tering class arrived as sophomores. Al- though we were a year older and should have been a bit wiser, we had a great deal of difficulty in finding classrooms and cor- rect stairways, a fact which was quite evi- dent to our sympathetic (?) upperclassmen. Our first important event as sophomores found us electing the following class offi- cers: President, Roger MaCleod; Vice-Presi- dent, Dave Ahearn; Treasurers, Kathy Ryan and Richard Kennedy; Secretary, Nancy Kelley; Girls ' A. A., Ellen Lovell; Boys ' A. A., Mark Sias. The sophomore class was well-supported when Ellen Lovell, Daryl Dennison, and Jane Hartnett were chosen for the cheer- leading squad. The class of 73 had much to cheer about when the varsity foot- ball team included sophomores Roger Ma- Cleod, Billy Benson, Keith Rogers, Mike Roberts and Steven Brennan. Mark Hersey and John Glynn were sophomores who met the requirements for the N. H. S. basketball team. Our first year at N. H. S. was an exciting and unforgettable experience. We think the class of 1 973 made quite an impact on the school in 1970-1971, and we look for- ward with anticipation to our Junior Year. PATTY PHALEN Class of 1973 COM lt JuitUVtS L. to R.: Kenneth Cavanaugh, Gary Donovan, Janice Bacon, Gail Flaherty, Mary McTernan, George Abraham, and Barry Sullivan. Once again on an early September day we, the Class of 1972, entered Norwood High School with a new confi- dence and ease to fulfill our roles as upperclassmen. The election of our class officers was our first major con- cern for this year. Newly elected were Barry Sullivan, Presi- dent; George Abraham, Vice-President; Kenneth Cava- naugh, Boys ' A. A. Representative. Re-elected were Gail Flaherty, Secretary; Janice Bacon and Gary Donovan, Trea- surers; and Mary McTernan, Girls ' A. A. Representative. Many juniors participated in both Varsity and Junior Varsi- ty sports. The teams were led by many outstanding juniors: in football, Barry Sullivan, Joe Annello; in hockey, Peter Brown, Mike Martin; in basketball, Bob Magee, Mark Line- hon; in field hockey, Betty Carlson; and in girls ' basketball, Joan Phalen. The Varsity cheerleaders, Mary McTernan, Joanne Thom- as, Marie DeRoma, Kathy Patsos, Janice Bacon and Paula Parise, with their enthusiasm and support cheered the teams into victory and success. Finally spring arrived and brought with it the long-awaited Junior Prom. It succeeded in fulfilling everyone ' s anticipated excitement of the night. As our third year came to a close, we all looked forward with mixed emotions to our final but very important year at the school on the Hill. Eagfosk D tfcmfi cfc The English Department offers a wide variety of courses which are planned to devel- op and increase power in the use of language skills, to provide an introduction to and a basic understanding of our literary heritage, and to enrich and enlarge personal hori- zons. This year an elective program was introduced into the curriculum, allowing the stu- dents to chose courses which suit his individual needs. The Reading Department offers two programs to the student — Study Skills, a course designed to build up the underclassman ' s basic reading skills; and Developmen- tal Reading, which is to strengthen these skills in those upperclassmen who need such help. Art Design and the Art Major Program offer courses which involve the development of basic skills of art as it influences our lives. Our extensive Music Department involves a large number of Nor- wood students in both vocal and instrumental programs. The music groups have won many honors for the school in various competitions. 128 For the second year, the Math Department has a computer terminal under the au- thority of Mr. Buscone to help with Math projects. The Department has an outstanding faculty to help the students in their efforts to pass and prepare themselves for their fu- ture in college and life. The Science Department continues to grow annually with increased laboratory facili- ties and ever-increasing faculty interests. The students ' abilities are widened by the large selection of courses offered. Business V dMxA The aim in business education is to teach skills that will en- able young citizens to earn a living and to contribute to their general knowledge and well-being for the rest of their lives. All students have the opportunity to select subject matter to pro- vide for their individual needs so that they may achieve satis- faction in a life work and in developing responsible citizenship. Our History Program is designed to develop well-in- formed citizens by providing more depth and continuity in subject areas and more variety in course selection. Required for all students is United States History, .which should prove beneficial as a guidepost for our students ' utilization of the eighteen-year-old vote. 131 Industrial Arts Education is designed to provide an opportunity for each student to acquire basic knowl- edge in the fundamental principles and techniques used in industry. Physical! Education The Physical Education Program is an integral part of the high school education and has been expanding rapidly in recent years. We aim to develop correct atti- tudes towards play, and to set up proper standards of sportsmanship. Wo h6 EcOHOfcuCS The Home Economics Department offers high school girls an op- portunity to develop themselves as responsible individuals through class experience which can be put into practice in their daily living. The girls are taught the techniques of sewing. The fundamentals of good nutrition and planning meals are also taught. • $ Pa J. ' -.; . ■P ABOCY NvwoU Wtgfc s safe sckod, tta Utomq 0. Peafcoiy l MRS. Peabody School automatically become members of the Student Cooperative Association. Elected offi cers, homeroom representatives and alternates, and two faculty advisors encourage the acceptance of responsibilities and privilege and stimulate the fine spirit of pride of accomplishment and achievement that prevails throughout the school. The fall Student Mixer timed for Halloween with all its gaiety and goblins was a huge success, with students and faculty enterim into the full spirit of the occasion. Operation Santa Claus is another Student Co-op project where students remember children less fortunate. With their love thi students take gifts to the needy and hospitalized. Full-course Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with complete festive detail am programs are sponsored by the students. As special business needs arise, the students tackle each problem with diligence. Parking permits, pant-suit uniforms, and Henry O. Peabody jackets have all been adopted under the year ' s new business. The Awards Program at the closing of the school year honors those graduating and those winning special awards and scholai ships. To round off the year ' s activities, the Student Co-op busses the entire school population to a nearby park for a day of fun the sun. Elected officers for the year 1970-71 were: President, Louise Harding; Vice President, Diane Hawley; Secretary, Joyce Ebert; Tree surer, Elaine Califano. THE HENRY O. PEABODY PRESS CLUB Front Row: L. We began our year by holding the dynamic Senior Auction, which was followed by a most successful dance. During the fall and winter seasons, we enthusiastically donated to two very worthy causes: Globe Santa and the newly instituted Pulse Organization. The Student Council worked harmoniously with the faculty during the 1 970-71 school year. Student Council members served, along with teachers, on the newly formed curriculum, school plant, and scheduling committees. Members also attend- ed a convention where they discussed the effectiveness of an Open Campus system. The spring season heralded the second successful carnival, an activity proving to be financially rewarding, as well as an enjoyable venture. All in all, the Student Council had a most productive year under the leadership of the following officers: President, David Boch; Vice-President, Mike Lowey; Secretary, Hellas Assad; and Treasurer, Janice McDermott. ..« ??! - ' • :.., COUNCIL LEADERS: David Boch, president; Mr. Usevich, advisor; Hellas Assad, secretary; Michael Lowey, vice-president. The Hilltopper decided to continue to patronize Mr. Clifford Pearl ' s Print Shop. Mr. Pearl turned out several fine printing jobs at little or no cost to the paper. A new idea was put into practice this year with a separate Literary Supplement being produced, in addition to the regular issues. The faculty advisor, Mr. Paul Wilgoren, was aided by a fine staff of edi- tors: Beverly Adamonis, Edward Mistier, and Miles Bowen, along with student advisor Sheila Rodman. The Hilltopper staff, headed by our dedicated faculty advisor, Mr. Peter Davis, consisted of Eileen McAvoy and Mary Pat Curran as Co-Editors-in-chief; Sheila Rodman and Margorie Greene at News and Features; Beverly Adamonis, Literary; Chris Eibye, Art; while Joseph Fenton and Michael Ryan took over the Fun Page. The main objective of this year ' s staff was to put out a newspaper which would be read and enjoyed by the Student Body. Judging from sales, the objective was fulfilled. After accompanying the football team last fall, the musicians began to prepare for their winter Holiday ' s concert. GREATER BOSTON YOUTH WIND ENSEMBLE Jess Chesebrough W 9 £P0EIS ■FwrffcoE It has been said that the harder one works, the luckier one gets. This was not the case in regard to the Norwood High Football Team and its season. Without fear of contradiction, it can be said that no other team in the league worked harder preparing for the season than Norwood did. Beginning in March, most of the team worked on their own in a voluntary weight training program. This was a week of physical anguish as the team worked approximately six hours a day in four sessions with the morning session beginning at 6:30 a.m. It was also a time when sixty people were fused together as a team with a single purpose. That purpose was to win the Bay State Title, one that we fell far short of. The loss to Braintree in our opening game was a great disappointment to the whole team and seemed to set the stage for the dismal season that lay ahead. It was a season of almosts for the Norwood club. Overall, the team suffered six defeats with victories over Framingham South, Needham and Dedham being our only consolation. It was a season that defied analysis by all con- cerned. All the coaches and players deserved a better fate. Those who were on the team were proud of it and proud of being a part of it. The members of the Class of 1 971 would like to ex- press their thanks to Mr. Gulla and his assistants for their efforts and to wish the Class of 1 972 a better fate than was ours. : Courtesy of Warren J. Coach Ken Nolet was blessed with each of these, but no recipe will mix without a great chef. Sixteen basketball players will agree, in unison, that there isn ' t a greater connoisseur of basketball knowledge than the Norwood men- tor. Norwood finished third in the Bay State League with a very respectful and impressive 14-4 record. They were led by two very capable young men. Co-captains Paul Hartnett and Joe Porcello were probably the most competitive ballplayers in the league. Hart- nett, known for his defense, was a fairly accurate shooter from the outside and seldom made mistakes. Undoubtedly there will be better guards than Norwood ' s Joe Porcello, but his ability of the game will never be outshone. For possibly five years the school has not seen such an offensive threat as all-star Joe Johnson. This kid has the moves to make it big. Unheralded perfectly describes Chris Macauley and all-star Rick Soper. Macauley is a ruffian on the court and his tenacious play has earned the respect of his opponents. Under pressure, Rick Soper is one of the best shooters in the loop, if not the best. His shooting delicacy and polished form are incomparable. Senior Dick Erdman was always ready to enter any game, any situation, game after game, whenever his teammates were in foul trouble, and he did exceptionally well. Ed Coughlin, Cameron Kelley, Pat Kewriga, and Pat McQuillan were the nomads of the bench. These students of the game practice, and practice, and practice. These athletes rarely play and they may be students, but by no means are they novice basketball players. Leaping is Jim McHugh ' s forte. This lefty didn ' t see much action but was an asset to his team. Next year ' s outcome will rest on the shoulders of dynamic Bob McGhee, Mark Line- han, Bob Bernstein and sophomore John Glynn. It ' s been a banner year for the Mustangs, qualifying for the Tech Tourney and reach- ing the quarter-finals. Picked by the coaches throughout the league to be a mediocre team, the Mustangs fought all obstacles and showed no mercy to their opponents. Mr. Nolet and his ballplayers must be commended for a job well done. They ' ve made our school proud, which is part of the Norwood tradition. T meron Kelley Coach Mr. Nolet, co-capts. BocjS ' QwU Te a w F astas QmwL mj League This year the Norwood High School Boys ' swim team finished second with a 7-1 record in the Greater Boston Division Two League. Norwood ' s first dual meet of the season was against Boston Technical High School, a meet won by a narrow margin of 3 points, 50-47. The next meet was with South Boston High. Norwood beat them for the first time in four years. Final score: 58-36. Norwood ' s third meet, the highlight of the season, was against Needham High. This meet proved to be Norwood ' s toughest, and they just couldn ' t overcome the strong Needham team. At the end of the meet, the score was 49-48, Needham. After their narrow defeat, Norwood rebounded and went on to beat Melrose 54-34, and trounced arch rival, Xaverian, 62-32. In regional and state competition Norwood ' s swimmers, David Boch, David Carlson, Gary Horsman, and Mike McAuliffe performed very well. In the state meet, Captain D. Boch placed 8th in the 400-yard and 13th in the 100-yard Butterfly. Senior David Carlson placed 1 3th in the 50-yard Free Style. The two Juniors, Gary Horsman and Mike McAuliffe, also swam well. After a successful 1 971 season, the prospects look good for Norwood ' s team next year. The team only loses five seniors: D. Boch, D. Carlson, B. Marsh, our diver; B. Doucette, and Philip St. Cyr. Each event requires an extreme mastery in tim- ing, coordination, and inner strength. Com- petitors are mainly judged by the precise- ness and grace with which they perform. If all judges followed this line of ruling, in- stead of judging difficulty, Norwood would have had a more victorious season. The un- derclassmen showed a tremendous amount of promise, and they will make up for the loss of this season ' s fabulous seniors next year. Sta- tistics told the tale at the finish, 98 goals for, with only 1 2 against. In the cage for the Mustangs was Junior Bill Pieri who com- piled a .67 goals against average. He was ably backed up by Junior Lou Parker, who saw action in a few games, and Sopho- more Fred Carbone. The shots on net totals show the fine defense led by senior tri-capt. Bob Thornton who was voted, deservedly, the league ' s MVP and also selected to the first all-star team. Seniors Ted Curtis and John Lawrie played consistently well all season and were a great asset to the team. Junior Pete Brown converted back to his familiar defense spot. Pete was a second team all- star at his defensive position. Other defensemen who should see action in the future are Junior Al Skene and Sophomores, Bob Lawrie and Kev Hurley. Goals win games, and Senior left wing Phil Nolfi got 31 to eclipse the record of the great. Richie Hebner. Tri-capt. Nolfi ended up second in the scoring race behind Mike Martin. Phil was a unanimous choice for all-star and will no doubtedly go down as one of Norwood ' s greatest. Senior center Jack Clifford, tri-capt., and wing Bob Rosata came through with many key goals and assists over the year to make themselves invaluable to the Wheelermen. Senior Bill Sul- livan really came through in the specialties department as he killed many penalties with his hustle in the corners. Mike Martin and Bill Clifford completed the Nolfi line. They were by far the highest scoring trio in the league. Martin led all scorers with 52 points, and Cliffor d ended up in the top ten, also. Martin was named to the first all-star team. Junior Eddie King was the centerman on the J. Clifford-Rosa- ta line and set up his two wings all year long for key goals, as well as chipping in with many himself. Juniors Don Reddick and Bill Denehy saw action on the third line as did sophomore Mark Balerna. Junior Gary Donovan had to leave the team halfway through the year due to an injury. Coaches Wheeler and Arvidson have to be given a lot of credit as they led the team through the first undefeated year in 30 years. They were instrumental in each victory by getting the team to a mental and physical peak before each game. Enter- ing the tourney, the Mustangs were seeded high and represent- ed their school in its utmost hockey tradition. Ted Curtis CT HOCKEY TEAM Row h M. Martin, B. Clifford, J. Clifford, B. Rosata, P.
