We realize that these days were perhaps some of our happiest, and so the staff of this year ' s Tiot has labored hard to make this book one that will bring back fond recollections in the years to come. We sincerely hope that it meets with your approval and also that it matches the high standard set by the Norwood High yearbooks in the past. M.J. From the motherly women who made us feel at home in the primary grades, to the realistic professeurs in the high school who instructed us on a more adult level, never have so few done so much for so many, to paraphrase a famous oration. It is to all these meritorious teachers then, that we wish to dedicate this record of our high school days to show our grati- tude, esteem, and honor. They are infinitely deserving of all three. Wake Our 2)eU SOPHOMORE YEAR In September of 1951, a melange of stu- dents from the Junior High School and Saint Catherine ' s School came together for the first time to form the Sophomore class of Norwood High School. In the manner characteristic of Sopho- mores, we began our first year at the School on the Hill with intermingled joy and anxiety, excitement and bewilderment. We were awe-stricken by the confident and accomplished Seniors, and we hoped that we might follow their precedent in schol- astic, athletic and social prowess. Our activities as a class began with the election of officers in October of that year. The leaders whom we chose to pilot us through this most important year were: Donald Tanneyhill, president; Gerald NcNeil, vice-president; Irene Falconer, sec- retary; Peter Folan and Marilyn Aspro, treasurers; Porta Sideropoulos and Paul Eckhardt, A. A. representatives. The next few months were spent in learning to work together and to become acquainted with our new teachers and new environment. The various committees for the Soph- omore party co-operated to plan a most enjoyable evening with dancing, refresh- ments and entertainment. Shortly after that we collaborated to produce an appropriate and pleasant Christmas Assembly. Members of our class became active in Student Coun- cil, in athletics and on committees, and by the end of our first year at Norwood High we began to feel that we were constituents in good standing. [20] % unction as WlicUte Wen JUNIOR YEAR In September of our second year at High School, our confidence and assurance had increased and we were no longer so un- certain or so spell-bound by the haughty seniors. Our class officers during the year 1952-53 were: John Doyle, preside nt; Marlene Johnston, vice-president; Irene Falconer, secretary; Georgia Georges and Rocco Pen- nachio, treasurers; Porta Sideropoulos and Paul Eckhardt, A.A. representatives. As the year progressed we became aware of the athletic capabilities of several of our classmates. Players like John Doyle, Paul Eckhardt and Patrick Lydon gave us high hopes for a senior year of outstanding athletic accomplishments. However, all our attainments were not athletic, for our Junior Prom, with its colorful Mardi Gras theme, was one of the gayest and loveliest ever held at Norwood High. Three outstanding Junior boys, Donald McComb, John Schuller and Gerald Pike, admirably represented Norwood at Boys ' State, and we were proud to send Elizabeth Dunn as our delegate to Girls ' State. John Doyle won the Harvard Book Award. The latter part of our Junior Year was spent in making preparations for our Sen- ior year. We elected Marlene Johnston and Richard Saunders editors-in-chief of the Tiot, and we chose a bevy of attractive and vivacious girls as our cheerleaders, and we formed our traffic squad. As June of 1953 drew nigh, we reviewed with pride and pleasure our two years on the Hill, and impatiently awaited what we were sure would be the best year of all. Vl e Dominate the S choiadtic S5c cene SENIOR YEAR October of 1953 witnessed the last elections of officers for the class of 1954. Chosen to lead us in this year of years were: Dominic Fruci, president; Georgia Georges, vice-president; Sylvia Berglund, secretary; Barbara Sanborn and Francis Meissner, treasurers; Paul Eckhardt and Porta Sideropoulos, A. A. representatives. John Doyle and Paul Eckhardt led our football team through a very creditable season which culminated in a victory over Dedham at the annual Thanksgiving day game. Not only on the gridiron but in hockey, baseball, basketball and track, our teams showed the ability and sportsman- ship that are a tradition with the Blue and White. Our cheerleaders, Captain Marilyn Aspro, Beverly Cofsky, Irene Falconer, Carol Murphy, Barbara Sanborn, Porta Sideropoulos and Marcia Pelletier won our praise and approbation with their attrac- tive appearance, energetic support, and their ingenuity in devising original cheers. We selected as our class play the comedy Men are Like Street-cars. Under the pro- ficient direction of Mr. John J. Flaherty, such outstanding performers as Richard Saunders, Harriet Gullich, Judith Horgan, Donald McComb and Sylvia Berglun suc- ceeded in producing a thoroughly delight- ful program. Our second theatrical adventure was the performance of our Operetta, Harmony Hall. Mr. Fleck directed the music, Miss Gow coached the dramatics and Miss Kiley taught the dancing for this amusing and tuneful musicale. Several of our operetta [24] SENIOR YEAR (Continued) stars were: Gerald McNeil, Harriet Gul- lich, Donald McComb, Irene Falconer, Donald Tanneyhill, Irene Ostrom and Pa- tricia McCready, John Schuller and Milton Towne. As the year drew to a close, we plunged ourselves into the task of planning our Senior Prom. Our hours of toil were re- warded, for we will alway remember with nostalgia the beautiful music, lovely deco- rations and the genuine fun that marked the outstanding social event of the year. We cannot write a history of our class without including a note of thanks to Mr. Hayden, our patient and firm guide, to Miss Coughlin, our chief senior adviser, and to all the teachers who have contrib- uted to our enlightenment and enjoyment during our three years at the School on the Hill. A special word of congratulation goes to all our yearbook editors: Richard Saunders and Marlene Johnston, editors-in-chief; Mary Yelapi and Edmund Wenstrom, ad- vertising managers; Anne Thompson and Milton Towne, circulation editors; Alice Byrne and Richard Hohmann, our art editors; and to Mrs. Riley, their adviser. We also feel that Gerald McNeil deserves a special word of commendation for his outstanding job as president of the Student Council, and Miss Hubbard for her work as adviser. Now, after three years of living and learning at Norwood High, we have only a few days left in our belov ed School on the Hill. We await our forthcoming grad- uation with the pleasantest of memories, the sweet sorrow of leaving our alma mater, and the confidence to face the future. M.M. It was a beautiful day, and games, boat rides, and a cook-out were the featured events. In October, elections presented a serious part of our program. They were held ac- cording to tradition. Posters, slogans, and speeches added to the enthusiasm of the campaigners. Parents ' Night was held in November this year, instead of in March. This en- abled parents, teachers, and students to become better acquainted earlier in the year. Our Thanksgiving dinner brought us to the end of November and turned our at- tention in the direction of Christmas. A great deal of work and interest was put into our annual Christmas Sale which was held in the form of a bazaar, in the cafe- teria. Our Christmas Program opened with a famous Christmas Opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors. The play was followed by the long-awaited banquet (a delicious tur- key dinner) served by the teachers. The White Elephant Sale took place in January, and our next project, the Prom in February, highlighted our social year. The theme of the dance was the Snow- flake and the programs, decorations, and refreshments featured the idea. In April, everyone had a barrel of fun at the jolly square dancing frolic. In June, juniors held the Step Party for us. Although we were very happy, we felt rather sad to leave our. school and the teachers who meant so much to us. The boys in the vocational group of the class of 1954 will look back over the three years they have been classmates and realize that such a pattern in their development has been experienced. Probably the most noteworthy single aspect of this class is the fact that they represent the largest graduating group in the history of the vocational school. It is quite significant that on this tenth anniversary year we should have ten boys ready to take their place in the world of work as trained craftsmen. With a major portion of their final year already in the record book, prospects for the future of these vocational boys of the class of 1954 are bright indeed. C.H.W. Jimmy Campbell, Robert McGloin, Kenny Wor- ster and Brian Dunn starred in basketball. Richard Walker added much to our hockey team ' s fame, and our Junior star, Mike Graney, was missed greatly on the ice. On February 19, 1954 we held our annual Junior Prom which was a great success. Filled with anxiety and excitement, we spent the first day of school in a state of great confusion; we were very often lost, trampled on. and peevishly called Little Sophies. But alter adjusting ourselves to our new faculty, the upper classmen, and a drastically short lunch period, we settled 9 l down with the anticipation of having a prosperous year. The election of our class officers: John Anderson, President; Kathleen McGuff, Vice-President; Jean Schaier, Secretary; Diane Laakso, Girls ' Treasurer; Paul But- ters, Boys ' Treasurer; Marilyn Hutchings and Gerald Armstrong, A.A. Representa- tives, proved to be our first major accomp- lishment of the year. Under the guidance of our ad- visers the dancing, entertainment and refreshments of the Soph- omore Party were enjoyed im- mensely by all who attended. The party presented the first real opportunity for a class get- together and it was a great success. Just before Christmas we pre- sented the Annual Sophomore Assembly. The program con- sisted of Bible readings, Yule- tide songs, poems of good will and a traditional Christmas story. This year Ann Foley, a junior, has been our local correspondent. Helene Marcoux, also a junior, reports on N.H.S. activity to Terry Thomas , High School columnist of the BOSTON TRAVELER, and news and pictures appear in that paper periodically. Pictures for release to local and city papers are on occasion posed, snapped, developed and printed by members of the Norwood High School Photography Club. Edward Lane, a senior typewriting student, pre- pares the news for release to the papers. The pages of our local newspaper are the sole means of telling our school ' s story to many Norwoodites. Many hours of scientific research were put into each publication. These geniuses also informed the school and town about who had the most beautiful eyes and the nicest figure , etc. in N.H.S. Our aims are those of all F.T.A. clubs: To learn about the opportunities in teaching. To cultivate the qualities essential in a good teacher. To aid in attracting the best quali- fied young persons into the teaching profession. Our membership on January first was twenty-one. We are inviting several soph- omores each month to join us and to re- place us when we graduate. Meetings have been held semi- monthly. Dues are $.50 a year. Our activities this year have been varied and interesting: Discussions have been held on legislation pertaining to Education, and we have written letters to our representatives re- garding proposed legislation. Seniors have observed and worked on the various levels in the Elementary Schools. Some members have learned to keep registers and have prepared monthly and yearly reports unaided. We have attended conventions and con- tributed to programs of groups interested in the recruitment of teachers. We J urdue the C luslve j iaSnin Norwood opened the season by conquer- ing a hopeful Needham, 6 to 0, after two years of defeat at their hands. Dom Fruci scatted by the opposing defense for the sole score. Needham had us on our knees and was in scoring position, but our tough defense under Co-Captain Paul Eckhardt held fast. Belmont visited Norwood to receive a shellacking . Junior Class President Brian Dunn scored twice, Dom Fruci broke through again, and Boogs Connolly snared a pass from Co-Captain Bozo Doyle, and Hutch Ristom kicked one extra point. Arthur White broke through the Belmont offense to give us a safety and we had a total score of 27 to 0. Milton arrived in our home territory to give us our third straight victory, 12 to 6, with Tom Mackie and Boogs Connolly scoring. We next came out on the bottom of a touch-and-go game with Braintree, 20 to 14. Bozo Doyle, at the helm, passed to Gerry McNeil and handed off to Brian Dunn to supply our goals. Ristom kicked the two conversions. Against Wellesley, we returned to the win column by subduing them 13 to 6. Bozo Doyle starred again as he passed to Connolly for one tally, and sneaked over the goal line for number two. After a game cancelled with Reading because of bad weather, we travelled to Natick and were promptly walloped to the tune of 39 to 7. Costello scored our only touchdown on a guard-around play, and Ristom converted. We were in excellent condition for Ded- ham on a cool and clear Thankgiving morn. Once rolling , we couldn ' t be stopped, and snowplowed Dedham 27 to 2. Connolly, Fruci, Renzi, and McNeil all scored and Ristom kicked three extra points with his golden toe, giving us a fine end to a fine season. P-A.J. The spectacular double-over- time game with Needham removed any doubt from our minds— Packy Lydon and Bozo Doyle. A great addition to the team was the perky consolidator from the Junior Class, Baldy McGloin. The season was marked by more spirit and enthusiasm and better turnouts than last year. Our altitudinous Richard Saum Saum- siegle, tallest man in the league, sparked the team as high scorer with 23 points to the greatest victory of the year, 83-60, over our losing rivals from Dedham. This great game, which put us a little closer to going to the Tech Tournament, ended our season with a record of 9 wins and 5 losses. Although we missed out on the Tech Tournament, we sent Baldy, ' ' Packy, Saum, and Bozo to play for the All- Stars. Saumsiegle was the high scorer in his game. Thus ended the Seniors ' basket- ball years at Norwood High. R.L.S. ' 54 [112J t p The Other Teams Prettier Rear: King, Hertel, Freda, Stitt, Paine. Front: McComb, Weisul (captain), Hunt. Nevertheless, our boys valiantly fought on and slowly crept up on our opponents, so that the final score, a loss of 12 to 9, was at least a respectable showing. In the Walpole game which followed, Snuffy Bowles held our opponents blank for five innings. When relieved by Brissette, who was followed by Boogs Connolly, Walpole got in some runs, but largely due to the hitting of Dom Renzi, we emerged as victors with a close score of 8-7. Bob Brissette pitched his first full game against Milton and won 7-4. McGloin ' s home run was a feature of this game. Against Framingham we had a field day. Everybody shared in the hits, and Snuffy fanned twenty-three men to win a 14-1 out and out victory. Needham, however, jaroved to be a horse of another color, and upset our apple-cart 8-6 in a game which we had been hopeful, if not confident, of winning. As this book goes to press, we are less than half-way through our schedule, and Co-captain John Bozo Doyle leads the team with a batting average of over .400. The playing of the Junior triumvirate, Graney, McGloin, and Renzi has been out- standing. Co-captain Bowles, assisted by capable catcher McColgan, has been a tower of strength. With their constantly improving playing, and if not deserted by that elusive Lady Luck, Norwood High School should place high in the Bay State League this year. P.A.J.
