■I Narwssd, HA 0 ' llWWiiWW WMW 1 : ■ - -■ ? ' v TIOT TffPff M D -NOI ■.LIBRARY i I NORWOOD SE M fO RT MTGhT STlHQOL - NORWOOD MASSACHUSI Dedication Within the past ten years, five issues of T OT including the present one, have been dedicated in sorrow and in respect to the graduates of Norwood Senior High School who have fought and died that others might live. We feel that the poem written by Stephanie Bonica of the Class of 1945 expresses most beautifully the sentiments we cherish toward our young warriors. And so with her permission we are reprinting here her poem. DELIVER US As God looks down upon our town today, He sees a loneliness about the square; For many a boy He once saw here has left To join a host of others over there. He sees today, as yesterday He saw, The changes that are wrought in towns by war; For Norwood ' s spirit, stressing freedom ' s worth, Encompasses the corners of the earth. In oceans, jungles, foxholes — everywhere God looks — He finds a bit of Norwood there, Portrayed by boys who not so long ago Walked down these very corridors we know, Joined in a true companionship - The mirth of high school days, Initialed books, tradition made. In countless different ways They left their mark within these walls to stay. Now we would in our TIOT tribute pay To you who sail the seas and search the sky — You graduates of Norwood High who march and fight. A simple tribute — as to God we send Our prayers — that soon the present war will end, Letting a blessed, lasting peace descend Upon a world that ' s missed the little things Too long. We pray That youth, with all the life and joy it brings To towns, in triumph may return. We pray That Norwood will come back again to stay. Graduates of 1951: Once again it is my privilege to addre ss a brief message to you, the members of our graduating class. Let me first congratulate you on reaching this important milestone in your lives. It is a happy occasion for you, for your parents, and for your friends. As you move on now toward adulthood at this most critical period in the life of our nation, remember, if you will, that your most precious heritage as an American citizen is the opportunity to live in a free, democratic society — a society dedicated to the brotherhood of man and the fatherhood of God. With each succeeding milestone may you grow in your appreciation of the profound significance of that heritage. CHARLES A. HAYDEN, Principal fOfifUJORD How, fellow braves, squaws and papooses! As you can see, we have decorated the Tiot in the traditional war paint of blue and white. Tiot, my fellow tribesmen, when translated into the language of the paleface simply means Norwood. On the following pages we have recalled the heap big happenings of all the tribe from papocse to chief-- of tribal dances, of the warrior councils, of pow-wows, and of skirmishes with ether tribes. So read on, fellow aborigines, and keep in mind — a remembrance a day keeps the medicine man away. L. W. A_j X , uj Urtife fa OFFICERS AS SOPHOMORES Seated: Lynch, Peckham Standing: Tomm, McGowan, Priday, Glaser, Bilotta HISIORy - SOPHOfTlORE yfflR Papeese September 8, 1948 . . . The awaited moment arrived at long last! Elation tinged with timidity characterized our arrival. What ecstasy! No more silent passing under watchful eyes, just free untrammeled ambling from class to class, merrily buzzing all the while! What bliss we felt in mingling with the B.T.O. ' s, those heroes whom we worshipped from afar, Arta Gulla, Johnny Poce, Pete Lasinskas, Al Butters, etc. What fun it was to take our rightful places in the assembly hall and in the grandstand ; to gather in the locker rooms and share the latest gossip. What tragedy to be absent, for although make-up was bad enough, worse still we hated to miss out on the grapevine news. Came election day and the leaders of the papoose class turned out to be Billy Lynch, president; Wally Peckham, in charge of vice; Bevie Tomm, secretary; Palma Bilotta and Teddy McGowan, treasurers; and Ann Priday and Donny Glaser, A. A. representatives. Then our class party — what a potpourri (polite for Mulligan stew) that was — peanut races, suitcase races, a quiz program and what-have-you! Putting on a Christmas pageant, however, helped to inflate our deflated egos. Next we plunged into basketball and hockey enthusiasm, when our studies didn ' t interfere too seriously with our pleasures, that is. Soon our flagging attention was drawn from the classroom to the bustling diamond and the tennis court activity. Before we had re- covered from spring fever, graduation music filled the halls and soon with a tear and a smile we were bidding adieu to our Senior friends and thus ended a happy, exciting year. I 116 } EH(DO - BKMW - MM MMM OFFICERS AS JUNIORS Rear Row: Alty, Lynch, Lane, Babinski Rear: Mahony, Hardy HisTORy - jumofi ytaR Braves September, 1949 . . . With nonchalance and a studied ennui we returned to the hill, eager withal to meet our friends again. With sardonic smiles we watched the new Sophomores being misdirected even as we had been, and we rejoiced in their bewilderment. Soon we settled into the groove of school life with the ease born of assurance. We cheered for the Senior stars, Mai, Joe McCue, Dick Jordano and our own Billy Lynch, Pete Flood, Minky , Bibsie, Bartucca and Travers. We ' ll never forget Eddie Hynes ' 102-yard dash for a touchdown in North Quincy. With what zest we perused the football programs to see who made the headlines! We re-elected Billy Lynch ,to lead our class, with Stan Babinski as vice-president; Betty Mahony, secretary; Charlotte Hardy and Amos Groh, comptrollers; Helen Alty and Pete Lane, A. A. Members. Our classmates SameskL Maduskuieand Cushman starred in basketball, and Don Glaser and Willie Wall scintil- lated on the ice. The celestial atmosphere which we created for our Stardust Junior Party made this a memorable soiree in high school history. At assembly Madman caused the sensation of the year with his grand salaam and Amos had to pay his debt. Betty Mahony and Leonard White were chosen chief-editors of the Yearbook. We proudly played host on Class Day as we wished our brethren Godspeed. Another year had melted away. {18 } nl2£2I T «£a r mm mmv SENIOR OFFICERS Estey, Glaser, Abel, Bartucca, Alty, Lynch, Cushman SeilOR HISTORy Mugwumps September, 1950 . . . Oh, fateful year! Back we came again with swagger and boast to take over as head men. Frank Bartucca was made head chieftain; Billy Lynch, his stand-in; Jane Ellen Estey, scribe; Marion Abel and Dan Cushman, wampum collectors; Helen Alty and Don Glaser, mem- bers of the A. A. Council. As new traffic officers we ruled the roost. We even had gun-men on the squad - page Bibsie and Jackie Folan! Incidently their water pistols are resting in the office unless Mr. O ' Donnell ' s wastebasket has got them. Our football team, under co-captains Minky and Pete showed good ability and fine spirit. They made quite a comeback from ' 50 ' s record. The whole school turned out to cheer them on and the colorful, lively help of the senior cheerleaders, Helen Alty, Marion Abel, Shirley Bowles, Pat Redihan, Charlotte Hardy, Jane Ellen Estey and junior Milda Elias inspired them to greater efforts. Those weeks when everyone looked so sharp for the class pictures caused more than one of us to stop and take another look at some of our colleagues. Sue Atkins starred in an unforgettable performance in, A Date with Judy, ably supported by such accomplished Thespians as Jackie Folan, Esther Boone, Elaine Falls, Tom Bowler, Lorraine Tulis and others. In January the high school gym was turned into royal headquarters as Madman Hinds and Pat Redihan became the royalties of 1951. As a terpsichorean artist Madman is less agile than in bowing to the ground. Throughout the year the Tiot staff labored in a mad scramble to produce the best yearbook ever. The Tiot room was always a turmoil of activity. What catastrophies we endured! But neither rain nor snow nor even Red Bailey stopped us for long. Norwood ' s 1951 season was an excellent one in basket- 420 } ball with the whole team making superhuman baskets. Captain Cushman, Maduskuie, Flood, Sameski, Meears and White upheld the Senior banner gallantly. Our nice Senior icemen, two of whom made All-Star team, Donny Glaser and Stan Babinski, turned night into day (and occa- sionally vice versa) in their zeal to improve their technique. WHDH came to N.H.S. when Bob Clayton arrived at the school as our guest to conduct our song poll. Palma ' s reaction to Stardust caused much comment. Tears, no less. Go West, young man, became the slogan of the day when the Norwood High gym turned into a dude ranch and Meet Arizona was presented as the annual spring operetta. Strains of western music must be still echoing around the hill. The gala Senior Prom was a dream come true but presaged all too vividly that our high school days were approaching La Fin. Soon we were beginning practice for our Com- mencement and learning to march without putting out someone ' s eye with our mortar boards. Banquet loomed ahead and then the day which we had alternately longed for and dreaded - Graduation! Some of us will go on to higher learning but for more, this signifies No more school days, no more books, no more teachers ' cross-eyed looks. For all of us the future seems uncertain but we shall try to face our destiny bravely with the hope that in this troubled world we shall, with the preparation which our teachers have worked so hard to give us, be equipped to fulfill our obligations and be worthy of the trust that is ours. j.E.E. After wel- coming our new students, we let our pent-up energies loose in the woods of Medfield. Then we settled down to a laborious routine in our trades. Campaigning! Soap box speeches in- troduced us to the candidates running for Student Co-operative offices. A catastrophe! All officers elected were seniors. Where will next year ' s experienced leaders come from? To display their abilities, our new officers broke up our strict routine with an hilarious Hallowe ' en Party. Trying to put us in the proper mood, a tunnel of spooks was provided by our teachers. Boy! Did they take advantage of us! Later, our girls and boys (all eight of them) exhumed their long forgotten treasures to make our White Elephant Sale a success. Trash or treasure — everything sold. The next job we plunged into with typical Peabody zeal was making our Christmas Sale a lucrative and attractive event. To com- plete the holiday season a Nativity Pageant and Christmas Party were held. This was the only time the faculty served the students — as waitresses. Ah! That was the life — did we sit back and take our ease! Blue Moon was the theme of our April Prom, but there was nothing blue about the dance. At this spectacular event, Miss Peabody was chosen and royally reigned as queen of the ball. Stroke of 1 1 :30 and couples slowly and reluctantly departed into the darkness. In June, on the lawn of the Henry O. Peabody School, the undergraduates gave a buffet luncheon for the departing Seniors. Re- gretfully, we left our teachers and books behind as with hope in our hearts, we started on the long hard road ahead. Our class has been well represented at all of the school ' s social affairs, and we like to feel that we contributed our share to their success. Our own Junior Party was well Corcoran captained an enthusiastic girls ' basketball squad. ' 52 also boasts an unusually large num- ber of students who score high in the academic line. There are rumors that some report cards have scarcely seen beyond the first letter of the alphabet. Realizing that it takes every card in the deck to play a game, and that sometimes a deuce tops an ace, we cherish each and every member of our class. As we strive together to bring glory to Norwood High, may we always keep the game fair and square. E. D. In the minds of some they were a challenge and others anticipated either one revelry or only one catastrophe after another. After we got into the spirit of things, we pro- ceeded with caution but enthusiasm and we went over the top in the annual A. A. drive. Our Sophomore Party was one of un- excelled merit and everyone present enjoyed the dances of Nancy McCarthy, the songs of Lorraine Boyden and Alma McLean, and the showmanship of Harry Vasey. Our Sophomore Christmas Assembly presented a large cast of shepherds, Wise Men and others not so wise. Fred Parkinson por- trayed St. Joseph, Lois Garner was the Virgin Mary, and Manuel Dias, William Burke, and Robert DeVito played the Wise Men. To Miss Gow, our chief adviser, must go the major part of the credit for this superlative performance. Under the leadership of our president, Fred Parkinson; vice-president, Dick Bunker; secretary, Janice Greenwood; girls ' treasurer, Joyce King; boys ' treasurer, Gene Thayer; girls ' A. As members of the council we have made an effort to continue the fine record of previous councils. Our delegates to the Norwood Community Councils have participated in all the meet- ings, thereby strengthening our position in the community. Council president, Stanley Babinski, is a representative to the newly organized Parent Teacher Student Association. Several of our members were delegates to the conference of the Eastern Massachu- setts Division of Student Councils which was held in Dedham. The National Conference of Student Councils was held at Wellesley, Massachusetts in June, and William Frates was elected to attend this important conference which lasted four days. One of the aims of this year ' s council was to support all student activities. A new Athletic Association was formed and the Student Council relinquished its annual football dance so that the A. A. might sponsor this activity. A new committee was formed to assist the Junior Red Cross n its drive for funds, and the results were most successful. Our new Bulletin Board Committee has been responsible for the attractive display in the main corridor of our school. The highlight of the year was our traditional King and Queen Dance— The Royalties of ' 51 — which was both a social and financial success. C. Our total yardage was 556 to 296 yards totalled by all opponents. Nine games in all were played. Although gaining 137 yards on the ground, Norwood ' s football team took the first game on the chin, with Needham landing the knockout blow by a score of 14 to 0. Four interceptions by Needham backs stopped each Norwood thrust into enemy territory. Playing host to Framingham High School, it was a joyous Norwood team that left the field after beating their guests 12 to 7, thus registering their first win of the season. Traveling to Belmont, Norwood met one of the biggest lines in school circles. This was a see-saw battle with Norwood coming through in the clutch. Twice Belmont threatened to break up the game with a touchdown, but each time their backs were thrown for a loss by oncharging Norwood line men. Taking on undefeated North Attleboro as their next opponent, the team from the school on the hill, proceeded to pound the enemy into submission by a 13 to score. Not once did North Attleboro get past our twenty yard line, as Norwood chalked up twelve first downs to North ' s two. Pete Lane ' s passing was outstanding. Showing a display of reverses and double reverses, North Quincy jumped to an early lead, dampening Norwood ' s homecoming, 13 to 6. The play of the game, as far as Norwood fans were concerned, occurred in the third period when George Fitzgerald snatched a North Quincy pass on the twenty yard line and raced eighty yards behind great blocking for Norwood ' s score. Traveling next to the South Shore to meet undefeated Braintree High, Norwood gave them stiff compe- tition as the six first downs for each side will testify. Salvy DeRose played great offensive ball in the last quarter, catching two passes from Co-Captain Pete Flood for a total of nineteen yards and setting up Norwood ' s only tally by his running. In a hard-fought game that saw St. John ' s jump to a 14 to lead, Norwood stubbornly submitted by a 21 to 14 score. Norwood ' s scoring was done by DeRose and Sykes. Gaining only sixty-five yards on the ground against Milton, Norwood took to the air, but not even six completions out of nine attempts were enough to stem the tide, and once more the Blue and White was the victim — this time by a 21 to 6 score. In the traditional Turkey Day Classic with Dedham, Norwood struck early, as Salvy DeRose tallied on a looping pass from Co-Captain Pete Flood. A thirty-five yard pass from Flood to Tom Maduskuie set up the score. In a sudden reversal of form, however, the Shiretowners proceeded to pound the middle of Norwood ' s line, and when the mud stopped flying, Dedham emerged the victor by a 31 to 6 score. Thus ended a season which saw Norwood win two victories, suffer six losses, and tie one opponent. L. W HOCKEy TEMII First Row: Wheatley, Coach Hagblom, Tomershea, Donohue, Co-Captain Glaser, Co-Captain Wall, Babinski Second Row: Kane, Walker, Seastrand, McCarthy, Geraghty, Mullane, Wheeler Gay Blades When the hockey season came around, we didn ' t know how the team would shape up because we had lost most of our veterans through graduation. Mr. William Hagblom, who has done such a wonderful job of coach- ing the last three years, tried out different com- binations and finally came up with this start- ing team: Connie Seastrand, Co-Captain Don Glaser, and Jackie Kavolius as the forward line, with Co-Captain Bill Wall and Stan Babinski on defense, and Stan Tomershea starting in the goal. Norwood bowed 3-1 to Waltham in the opening game of the season. Co-Captain Don Glaser scored Norwood ' s goal with assists from Connie Seastrand and Jackie Kavolius. B.C. High swamped the blue and white 6-1. Don Glaser assisted Babinski on Nor- wood ' s lone tally. Framingham took the third game 3-1, with Co-Captain Don Glaser scoring Nor- wood ' s only goal. Norwood bounced back after three losses to down Watertown 2-0, McCarthy and Glaser accounting for the two goals. Stan Tomershea played a good game in the nets and earned his shut-out. Wellesley downed the blue and white 4-2, with reliable Co-Captains Don Glaser and Bill Wall both scoring unassisted. In the sixth game Norwood and Need- ham tied 3-3, with Norwood ' s goals coming from Kavolius, McCarthy and Babinski. Norwood, unable to click in passing, was downed by Walpole 4-0. In the opening play-off game Norwood beat Needham by a score of 4-2. Framingham topped us by a heart- breaking score of 1-0. Bill Wall played one of the best defensive games of the season. We took second place honors in the second division by beating Watertown 4-3. Coach Hagblom was sidelined by illness and was unable to see the boys come through, with Don Wheeler putting in the final goal when but one second was left to play. Thanks to wonderful coaching and hard playing, three of the boys gained All- Star berths — Don Glaser, who was third highest scorer in the league, Connie Seastrand, fighting all the way, and Stan Babinski who played a dependable defensive game throughout the season. Milton barely squeezed by Dedham in the closing games to take the crown. Natick was a close third with 10 and 4 record and Needham and Norwood placed fourth, each with seven wins and seven losses. From the point of view of the record books, this has been Norwood ' s worst bas- ketball season in five years. Everyone who watched the team in action, however, will agree that the boys had plenty of height, fight, class, and spirit. Another favorable observation for the team is the fact that they outscored their opponents for the year by 17 points. Big Danny Cushman, the captain of the squad, did a brilliant job at center and scored a total of 165 points this season. Mike Sameski and Ray Hall were the two best guards that Norwood has seen for some time and Tommy Maduskie, between his ailments, did Hoopsters a bang-up job at forward. All four were chosen to represent Norwood on the All-Star team. Live-Wire Pete Flood did more than his share, also. (Last comment by editor.) The only active senior players on the squad are John Meears, Pete Lane, and Joe Minkevitch. The juniors, one and all, are fine ball players and a great deal is to be expected of them next year. Coach Scafati has been build- ing this team since last year and it is shaping into one of the best teams in Norwood ' s history of baseball. The keystone corner is expertly de- fended by Ace Carchedi and Bill Frates. Salvi DeRose guards third with his life, and Buddy King ' s catching is something to see. When Dick Bunker isn ' t pitching his heart out, he ' s playing first base like a veteran. Whatever Dick ' s job in the field is, he is always hitting— pretty good for a sophomore, huh? The team has a lot of good old- f ashioned spirit. It seems that when one hits, they all hit. This was proven in our triumphant 12-3 victory over Sanford and Company at Dedham. With six games remaining in the schedule, Norwood can still cause considerable trouble for the other teams in the League. Let ' s hope so.
