She was an alert, capable, and co-operative leader, understanding of our bewilderment and uncertainty, and sympathetic with our ambitious if somewhat hazy ideas. The readers of this dedication cannot possibly tealize how deep was our sorrow at her untimely death, or how much she meant to all of us. As a class, we have endeavored in her memory to maintain a one hundred per cent record in class dues, and we have founded a library of moving pictures in her name. Now, as we are about to leave the school where she taught so long and so well, we pay our final tribute to her in this, our most cherished accomplishment, the 1950 Tiot. She has gone from us forever, She has moved a little nearer To the Master of all Music. CHARLES A. HAYDEN Principal members of the Class of 1950: Congratulations on this happy occasion of your graduation. You have indeed been an excellent class — outstanding in scholarship — outstanding, too, in your service to the school. You leave us now with our best wishes and with the assurance of a most sincere and continuing concern for your success. In the years ahead, may you ever reflect credit on your homes, your churches, and your school. May the harmony and happy notes of Orpheus, which you have so appropriately chosen to typify your days at Norwood Senior High School, find continuing expression for each one of you in happy, well-adjusted, righteous, unselfish, and community-minded lives. It is for this end that society educates its youth. CHARLES A. HAYDEN, Principal fOREWORD Say It With Music It was with some trepidation and a feeling of audacity that we departed this year from the time-hallowed custom of keeping our yearbook in the school colors. We wished our theme to be a rhapsody in rhythm; a song was to be our banner, and music with her silver sound was to permeate our masterpiece, and so we decided that a clear singing red and silver would be appropriate colors. We hope you approve. But how the subject-theme may gang Let time and chance determine Perhaps it may turn out a sang Perhaps turn out a sermon. R. B. Meade HISTOfiy Of TIOT Many moons ago, when the redman ruled this region, he gave it the name of Tiot, meaning enclosure of waters, in the language of the Neponsets, a branch of the Algonquin tribe. A glance at the map shows how appropriate this picturesque name is, for Norwood is bounded on the north by the Planting Field Brook and Purgatory Brook, on the South by Trap- hole Brook and the Neponset River, on the east by the Neponset River, and on the west by Hawes Brook and Germany Brook. For some years now the name Tiot has been used as the title of the Norwood High School yearbook. The sanctum sanctorum upstairs over the school library, where the yearbook staff labors is known as the Tiot Room. If there are times when Riot Room might seem more appropriate, then we ask you to remember that our main compensation for hours of labor is the fun we have along the way, and in the end we hope that you regard the finished product as the chef d ' oeuvre that we so fondly consider it. ■■■II II n 1950 S0PH0m0R€ CLASS OfflCffiS Standing: Maroney, Feaver, Pearson, J ordano, Weisul Seated: Malacaria, Stepanovich When We Were Sweet Sixteen Remember . . . In September, to start the year off with a bang, we had our annual School Picnic at Rocky Woods Reservation, where we played baseball, ran relay races, and took a long hike to work up an appetite, which of course, some of us probably did not have to stimulate at all. In October, the Hallowe ' en Party was a gala occasion. We had quite a novel time. The entertainment featured Eunice Taylor as a fortune teller, Catherine Scully as her pet black cat, and Miss Pacheco as a colorful gypsy. Each department presented a short skit. The most original, that of the Dressmaking Depart- ment, received first prize. In November, our traditional White Elephant Sale was held, at which time every- one had a chance to purchase interesting and unusual articles. The sale, sponsored by the Student Co-operative Association, was very suc cessful. A delicious Thanksgiving dinner followed. With the co-operation of one and all, in December we tackled our next job, the Christ- mas Tea and Sale, when we all had a chance to display our handiwork for sale. One of the biggest highlights of the year was the technicolor motion pictures which were taken of all the departments in the school, showing the activities of a regular school day Of course, this wasn ' t any Hollywood produc- tion, but at least we felt we were stars. Next, in March, we had our Parents ' Night. A group of the girls volunteered to sing as a chorus under the direction of Miss Riley. That night, in seeing the Peabody motion pictures, our parents probably saw us for the first time as glamorous and practical workers. April brought with it our annual spring Prom. Open House was held in May and was attended by the general public. As usual, it was a big success. Here we are at last, in June, with our Step Party and Class Day exercises in sight and, wonder of wonders, graduation directly ahead. We can now look forward to employ- ment in our field of training and to joining the new Alumnae Association which offers us a splendid opportunity for continuing our rela- tionship with our fellow graduates and with the School. E. T. Peabody Prizes Opposite: Doris Clancy — best-dressed — best-looking Priscilla Fournier — best student — most likely to succeed Mary Hennessey, ace accomplisher Eunice Taylor, most popular ?00M 12 S 200ft -106 ROOM 13 JUNIOR JUVENILES 51 Rear Row: Alty, Lynch, Lane, Babinski Front Row: Mahony, Hardy Looking back on this past year, we, the Junior Class, feel that much has been accom- plished in creating a real school spirit which every class strives to attain. At the beginning of the school year, we elected the following officers: William Lynch, president; Stanley Babinski. vice president; Elizabeth Mahony, secretary; Charlotte Hardy, girls ' treasurer; Ronald Groh, boys ' treasurer; Helen Alty, girls ' A. A.; Robert Lane, boys ' A. A. The biggest event of the year, from our somewhat prejudiced viewpoint, was the Junior Party. This high spot, which took the place of our Junior Prom, was one of the most outstanding parties in the history of our school, due to the fact that the gym was never more ar- tistically decorated, and, incidentally, how nice- ly we succeeded in subduing the lights and yet not running afoul of the law. To have more representation in our class government, we started a Junior Council which we hope will be continued in the same spirit of co-operation with which it was begun. Vice President William O ' Toole has substituted for Joe Peattie as Student Council Chairman very successfully and Betty Mahony has been most efficient as Corresponding Secretary of the Council as well as a reporter for ' ' Hilltop High- lights. We certainly did not lack in athletic ability for in our Hall of Fame can be found inscribed the names of Glaser, Babinski, Hinds, Wall, Lynch, Lane, Flood, Bartucca, Minke- vitch, Maduskie, Sameski, Cushman, and Hynes. Eddie ' s famous 102 yard dash for a touchdown at the Quincy stadium set a record there. Eddie was never known to move so fast before or since. We are looking forward with keen an- ticipation to becoming the reigning class of N. H. S. and we hope to follow as successfully as possible in the footsteps of the class of 1950. M.J.B. •{63 } fsUU i I (C ( (C ' iS . 4 ' SOPHOMORE SAPLINGS THE WHOLE DECK Top to Bottom: Bernier, Connelly, Elias, Vescio, Travers, Sykes, Paquette And now we belong to the School on the Hill. Since last September her colors have been our colors, her triumphs ours, her sorrows we have shared. We have gone the traditional way of all Sophomores and, because man ' s ingenuity takes us ever onward, we have encountered a new and difficult problem along the way. It is the academic field that we have found it necessary to travel a little farther than our predecessors. The specific problem lies in that openly despised part of learning known as homework. In the years just past, the stu- dents successfully mastered the art of follow- ing a major league baseball game with their ears, while they followed Pythagoras with their eyes. Sciencehasputitup to us to find a way to both listen to and watch Milton Berle, while we draw the inner mechanism of the Anura. We can only hope that our report cards will show that we have met and conquered this challenge. Our official business has been ably trans- acted under the direction of our president, Joseph Paquette. Kenny Sykes is our vice president; Sally Bernier, girls ' treasurer; Edda Connelly, boys ' treasurer; Milda Elias and Teddy Travers, A. A. representatives. At the Sophomore Party, we all enjoyed the dancing and the real talent shown by our own entertainers. Donny Grummet ' s songs were delivered with professional smoothness and Wanda Wojdag ' s performance was highly amusing. For the Christmas Assembly, our class staged the musical pageant, Songs of Christ- mas under the direction of MR. FLAHERTY. JO-ANNE BULLOCK was beautiful as the Vitgin Mother and KENNY SYKES made a handsome (if improbable) St. Joseph, while PAUL FOSTER, PHIL RILEY, and EDDIE PADDEN were three kings in our deck. It looked for a time as though all four of these actors (?) and JOE PAQUETTE, who played the inn-keeper, might have to attend class in all their hirsute glory because their luxuriant beards just wouldn ' t come off. We have entered whole-heartedly into sports and among our colleagues who have won fame are RAY HALL, JACK KAVOLIS, TEDDY TRAVERS, KENNY SYKES, and DONNY CRUMMET. We are well represent- ed in the school orchestra and band also. Because we all like to be pioneers, we can boast that Sophomores, for the first time, have taken over as Chairmen of Assembly Pro- grams along with their elder brothers and sis- ters. These four intrepid souls are Barbara Deeb, Milda Elias, Frances Healy, and Philip Riley. May we in our next two years find other ways to add lustre to out laurels. E. W. Commencing its ninth year, the Student Council determined that it would again excel in all of its undertakings, and that it would have a banner year of achievement under the able leadership of: Joseph Peattie, President; William O ' Toole, Vice President; Anne Bunker, Recording Secretary; Betty Mahony, Corresponding Secretary; Frank Cofsky, Treasurer; and an Execu- tive Board consisting of Jean Charron (Chairman), Betty Glynn, Jeannette Montisano, Daniel Cushman, Peter Flood, and Frank Malacaria. Miss Hubbard continued on as faculty adviser. The membership of the Assembly Committee was increased in order to secure more ideas and suggestions in respect to the programs and to give a greater number of students the opportunity of conducting the assembly meetings. A successful cheering section was organized by Jean Charron to attend the football games and give moral support to our eleven. Carol Jostin was appointed chairman of a library committee which is making long strides toward the ultimate goal of redecorating the library and replenishing the bookshelves. The annual Football Dance held under the joint auspices of the Council and the Senior class was a financial and social success enjoyed by all. The Student Council was honored by being asked to join the Norwood Community Council whose purpose is to work for the welfare of the community. The council again undertook the expense of decorating the school for the Christ- mas season, to the enjoyment of all. The Gracious Living class was most helpful in this enter- prise and candy-canes and silver-speckled bows brightened the corridors. A beautiful tree stood in the main entrance hall. A set of portable shades was purchased in order to secure the best conditions under which to show moving pictures. The purchasing of a camera and other photography equipment gave impetus to a Photography Club begun under the guidance of Mr. Sullivan. Members of the club take pic- tures of sports events, assemblies, and social functions. Continuing the tradition instituted last year of sharing the profits of the King and Queen Dance, the Heart Hop proceeds were equally divided between the Student Council and the Senior Class. Interested in community activities, the Council generously donated to the March of Dimes and sponsored a Red Cross Drive. Sincere appreciation is expressed to Miss Hubbard, our faculty adviser, who has spent many hours helping us to plan and carry out our activities, and to the students and teachers whose co-operation has made our functions so successful. Under the gifted, guiding hand of Professor Jean Dethier, this hard-working and inspired group each year continues to delight audiences both of fellow students and of members of the community. Their numerous presentations in our own assemblies, at other schools, at the Chamber of Commerce banquet, at the Senior Play, and at graduation exercises offer proof positive of their excellent training, and convinces us all that Confucius was so right when he said Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without. •{86 } FOOTBALL Back Row: D. The pigskin didn ' t quite bounce in the right direction for the Blue and White this season, but their record of one victory against eight losses does not tell the story of the efforts and abilities of the players and coaches. A green squad had to be ripened from the seeds of a few veterans of previous campaigns. Injuries were the main problem for the coaches to overcome. They hit so hard that linemen were shifted to the backfield, ends were shifted to center, and it was like a game of cards, there was so much shuffling of the deck. Quarterback Frankie Malacaria broke his collarbone early in the season, removing the only experienced backfield man for the remainder of the schedule. This left the field-general job up to Joe McCue, who did a grand job. Pete Flood, a scrappy halfback, and Billy Lynch, a stalwart center, were also forced to the sidelines because of injuries. Dick Jordano then took over double duty at tackle and fullback, while Wally Gotovich was switched from guard to take over the work-horse duties at halfback. There follows a brief account of each game more or less as the local scribes re- ported them. Norwood Humbled by Needham in First Outing. Making but two first downs during the entire contest, committing three fumbles, all of which were recovered by the opposition, and having three forward passes intercepted, the Norwood High gridsters gave their followers little to cheer about as they dropped the opener to Needham, 19-0. Norwood Eleven Remains Scoreless as Framingham Chalks Up 12-0 Victory. Fumbles led to Nor- wood ' s downfall, two of which resulted in Framingham scores. In comparison to their previous outing Norwood looked like a new club, especially in their passing and running game. Much Improved Local Eleven Bows to Belmont in Home Opener, 6-0. A greatly improved Norwood High football team played its best game of the season in the home opener, but was unable to ward off a Belmont surge in the final stanza when the visitors marched fifty yards down the field to score a lone touchdown. Gotovich Sparks Norwood to First Grid Win, 19-13, Against North Attleboro. Wally Gotovich and Joe McCue teamed up to break the losing streak by taking turns reeling off yardage on passing and running. Wally scored twice while Joe tallied the other marker. 102 Yard Jaunt by Hynes Averts Shutout Against North Quincy Raiders. Eddie Hynes, the speedy Norwood left halfback, raced 102 yards for Norwood ' s only score in the Quincy Stadium. In doing so he set a record at the stadium and kept Norwood from being shut out. Final score — North Quincy 32, Norwood 6. Rindge Tech in 33-0 Grid Romp Over Norwood Eleven. Rindge clicked early in the first period for three touchdowns after which Norwood steadily grew stronger. In the final stanza the Blue and White led by Gotovich and Jordano seemed to come to life, but didn ' t quite have the scoring punch. Undefeated Natick Hands Norwood Season ' s Worst Grid Setback, 34-0. The Natick horde had little trouble, as was predicted, in handing Norwood High its worst defeat of the season. Locals Suffer Seventh Setback as Milton Romps On Holiday, 28-0. A powerful Milton football team invaded the Norwood field on Armistice Day afternoon and hung up 28 points to whitewash the local eleven. 12-0 Turkey Day Loss to Dedham Drops Curtain on Dismal Season. Norwood had a slight edge over the Shire-Towners in the first half, which went scoreless. But in the third period a Dedham punt touched a Nor- woodite and was recovered by Dedham. This led to a score and a turn in the tide. The fourth period was re- petitious of the third, during which Jordano and McCue were exceptionally good for Norwood. Thus ends the sad saga of our football hopes and efforts, but hats off to our team and Coach Andy Scafati for the fine display of sportsmanship and spirit throughout a heart-breaking season. F. Mr. Wil- liam Hagblom had a very successful season as coach and we welcomed him back this year with enthusiasm. Due to the greater interest aroused, we had more fans in the Arena than ever before. Our starting team consisted of Co-Cap- tain Ishky Barrett, Don Glaser, and Russ Pothier playing the forward positions, and Co-Captain Joe McCue and Willie Wall on defense, with Bill Rogers at the goal. The second line, which showed a lot of fight in the later games, consisted of Connie Seastrand, Jack Kavolis, Dick Monahan, and a steady alternate on defense, Stan Babinski. Norwood opened the season with Bos- ton College High which was chosen by many newspapers as a favorite to take the league. Due to good spirit and snappy play, we sprang a surprise with a 2-0 win. The next game with Framingham we lost 4-3, but it was a personal triumph for Don Glaser who scored our three goals. The game with Watertown ended in a 1-1 tie. Ishky Barrett played a great de- fensive game. Then came the heartbreaker — we lost the Wellesley game 1-0, although Bill A round Rogers played a great game in the nets. On New Years ' Eve we played Needham and they beat us 3-2, although it was a very well played game by all our boys. Then came the game we all waited for — with Walpole. Due to over- anxiousness, our playing failed to synchronize and we lost 6-1. We played Waltham in the last game before the playoffs, and we electrified the crowd by tying our opponents 1-1 in the closing minutes. Joe McCue played one of his best games on defensive. The playoffs started with Norwood in the second division. We started off by beating Framingham 6-0, with our first linemen each getting two goals. The Watertown game we also took 6-0, with Russ Pothier scoring four goals. {Editor ' s Comment: Russ Pothier ap- peared on television with Bump Hadley as Athlete of the Week due to this feat.) The last game of the season was played with B. C. High and it ended in a 1-1 tie. So after a rocky start, we finished leading the second division and due to super coaching and flashy playing, we placed four men on the Bay State All-Star Team: Joe McCue, Russ Pothier, Don Glaser, and Ishky Barrett. Our boys dropped the first two games to Needham and Natick respectively, due largely to inexperience. However, with the expert coaching of Coach Scafati, they were able to win the next 9 out of 10 games. Milton was the cause of our downfall, spoiling a possible 10 game winning streak. Predominant throughout this whole series of 14 games was our captain, Walter Shackley, who amassed a total of 235 points, a neat average of 16.7 per game, topping last year ' s star Art Gulla by 2.6. The five starters were: Walter Shackley, Thomas Maduskie and Mike Sameski as forwards, and Oliver Mahn and Dick Jordano at guard. Our school was very well represented at the Bay State All-Star Game. Shackley, Maduskie, Jordano and Cushman took part. Shackley was the hero of this contest, with nine points credited to his skill. The All- Stars won from the Champions of Milton High, 32-29.
