Oo 1949 C o ' Administration Faculty Seniors Peabody Undergraduates Activities Sports Sponsors Advertisements During our three years on the Hill, our class has achieved a brilliant record equaled by few and surpassed by none. Accordingly, as the last year of our golden harvest grew ripe for the reaping, it came time for us to summarize the wonderful times we had at old Norwood High. With this thought in mind the editors and all those connected with the yearbook set forth with a will to produce a golden monument to the Forty-niners who succeeded in filling their hearts and minds with golden thoughts of friend- ship and knowledge. And so we, the class of ' 49, present the fruits of our labors with the hope and wish that it will recall to all the golden memories of our life on the Hill, when we were just beginning to stake out our claims in life as alumni of Norwood High School. — M. They have made their lives an untiring quest, seeking all that is fine and good for us, sharing our successes and failures, en- couraging us in our efforts, consistently keeping their faith in us. However concealed our appreciation may have been, we are not oblivious to their inexhaustible and unselfish endeavors. In this successful achieving of our first major milestone on the golden road to knowledge, we realize that we are not alone but are joined by our beloved mothers and fathers. Therefore, to them, we gratefully and proudly pay tribute in this dedication. To the Graduates of 1949: Congratulations and best wishes to you twentieth century forty-niners on the happy occasion of your high school graduation. During the years ahead may you strive constantly to live righteous, purposeful, well-adjusted and civic-minded lives, for this is the aim of modern democratic education. Let this be the precious gold which is your constant quest. CHARLES A. HAYDEN, Principal SSan flDimniSTRATion Miss Ruth M. Gow Dean of Girls Head of Mathematics Department Mr. Martin M. It ' s off to work we go, might well have been the refrain of the ' 49ers as we began our march, that Septem- ber morning in 1946 toward Norwood High, confident of finding gold in that thar hill. Life moved quietly for us the first few weeks, for we were still awed by the Seniors who, much to our chagrin, ignored us entirely, and the Juniors who devoted altogether too much attention to us. Having no big wheels among us at the time, we set about electing some. We chose as our chief prospector, Al Butters; his stand-in, Charlie Fisher; our recorder, Betty Pierpont; our official bankers, Margie William- son and Mike Cloherty; and our delegates to the A. A. Council, Ann Welsh and Arthur Gulla. Thus organized, we looked about for new fields of endeavor. As the date of the Sophomore Party was not too far off, we de- termined to plan something different for our initial social event — the result, The Club ' 49, complete even to the dazzling floor show. The bemustached singing waiters with their barbershop harmonizing provided the high- light of the evening. No less applauded were songs by our perennial favorites, Anna Ippoliti and Ginny Hood. A spectacular chorus enter- tained with selections, the lyrics of which were the brainchildren of our more talented class- mates. At this point, we must pause to express our appreciation to our class advisors, Miss Gow and Mr. O ' Donnell, for their part in the success of our first party, which we will long remember. Another proud moment that year was our first public appearance, with the school as a whole, at the Class of ' 47 ' s Torchlight Parade on the eve of the Norwood-Dedham football game. Armed with picks and shovels, we marched the streets of Norwood, making up in enthusiasm for what Prof. Dethier might have thought we lacked in quality of voice. Needless to say, between times and following our tradition, we plied our trade. Zealously some of us dug Latin roots in Mrs. Riley ' s room, while others panned Mr. Dunn ' s jokes for their often subtle point. Many the gold nuggets of wisdom we found between Mr. Levanitis ' parallelograms, and often we tapped the depths of Shakespeare in our English classes. The winter and spring terms of our Sophomore year found members of our class making a strike in a new field, that of athletics, and such names as Gulla, Lasinskas, Vietze, Poce, Michienzi, and Klinzman crept into foot- ball, baseball, basketball, and hockey headlines. We were well on our way, we hoped, to claim- ing a few niches in Norwood ' s Hall of Fame. During this time, too, we felt a kindred spirit toward Mr. Scafati, Mr. Levanitis, and Mr. O ' Donnell, who were sharing their first year at Norwood High with us. All too soon our Sophomore year drew to an end, and we watched the departure of the Class of ' 47 with mingled feelings of regret and excitement. Neophytes no longer, we looked forward enthusiastically to our Junior year at the School on the Hill. Not to be remiss in our duty, we turned our attention, first of all, to another group of minors, the Class of 1950, misguiding them with all the zest taught us by our predecessors. Something new was added to our class this year in the person of Pluto, the crow — Kenny Halstead ' s pet — which, not to be outdone by Mary ' s little lamb, followed him to school each day and, to boot, showed a sur- prising yen for athletics by his attendance at all the local football games. With a new set of officers chosen: John Poce, president; Charlie Fisher, vice-president; Betty Pierpont, secretary; Margie Williamson and Bob Ivatts, treasurers; and Sally Assim and Arthur Turner, A. A. Council representa- tives, our activities for the year got under way. Our list of distinguished persons began to lengthen. In addition to our conttibutions to the sports world of last year who still con- tinued to be big names to contend with in athletics, we were beginning to branch out in other fields. Earle Legge represented us at a meeting of the New England Student Govern- ment Associarion at Milton Academy. To Paul Nichols went second honors in the Cham- ber of Commerce Essay Contest. In addition Arthur Vietze was named to the Bay State All- Star Hockey Team. Other celebs were Dotty McComb and Diane Weisul who made their radio premieres on the New England Junior Town Meeting of the Air. February brought the date of the most important event on our social calendar, our Junior Prom; and along with it came six-foot drifts of snow. Undaunted, we dug our way toward the school with real vigor, and were rewarded for our efforts when we stepped into a garden of roses and danced to the strains of Vin Pierce ' s music. Spring literally came along with a song that year, as the corridors echoed with voices of Prof. Dethier ' s newly-formed Boys ' Glee Club. Businesslike sounds ema- nated from another room as the Debating Club argued the pros and cons of timely topics. May found some of us with bad cases of spring-fever, while others were completely up in the air, striving for pilots ' licenses at the local airport. In the interlude that pteceded the term tests, another highlight of the year took place — Norwood Night at Pops in Symphony Hall. Not too long afterwards, as all good things must, another happy year drew to a close. Now came the time for our hail and farewell to the Seniors; so we set about pre- paring for Class Day, a day that will always be one of our happy memories. JUNIOR PROM FEBRUARY 16.1948 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS (Left to right): Eklund, Gulla, Pierpont, Fisher, Turner, Davis, Ippoliti GOLD PflnnCRS Our return to school in the fall of 1948 for our Senior year began on a note of sadness, for during the summet we had lost, by death, one of our most able and energetic teachers, Miss Margaret Nicholson. Miss Nicholson ' s classes remain in our minds as a bright inter- lude in the daily routine. Hers was the happy faculty of being able to translate study into pleasure, and thus did she build her own memorial in the fact that she lives in the hearts of us all. Several other changes in the faculty of the English Department marked the early part of this year. Miss Elizabeth James, who en- deared herself to all who came into contact with her as head of the English Department, retired after twenty-five years of inestimable service. Miss Elizabeth O ' Sullivan was made head of this department. Miss Catherine Cole- man joined the staff and has proven indispens- able as a dramatic coach. Mr. John J. Flaherty succeeded Miss Nicholson, and also took charge of the Hilltop Highlights. As the fall season got underway, we re- solved to make this a boom year. With this in mind we chose Charlie Fisher as our leader; his assistant, Arthur Turner; our scribe, Betty Pierpont; comptrollers, Anna Ippoliti and Everett Davis; and A. A. representatives, Shir- ley Eklund and Arthur Gulla. Determined to strive for pay dirt in every field of endeavor, we buried ourselves in our books — for all of two weeks. Then began a whirlwind of activity. With Pete Lasinskas and Al Butters as co-captains, the football season got off to a good start, to finish on Thanksgiving with a record number of victories, and a new hero, Arthur Gulla, who made the All- Star team for the year. The yearbook staff published six football program issues which were in reality miniature newspapers and the money earned became the nucleus of the yearbook treasury. During this season, too, two of our brave knights, Paul LeBlanc and Tommy Collins, invaded the cheerleader field which for some years had been a No Man ' s Land. The donation by Sansone Motors of a Plymouth car with dual controls to be used to instruct our youth in the proper manipulation of a motor vehicle on the highway was the most startling innovation of the year. This {18} venture called for an intrepid instructor in- deed, one ready to sacrifice life and limb for his school. With Mr. Fisher in charge, if not at the wheel, the project got underway. Many a timid Senior encouraged by cries from his classmates to put a nickel in it, and many a jackrabbit jumper among us, who for weeks scattered the pedestrians in all directions, overcame his qualms with the result that we can report innumerable successes in this field. October found Diane Weisul and John Poce on their way toward Northfield and Mt. Herman to represent the school at the New England Student Government Association meeting. An unexpected vacation added to our Thanksgiving pleasure when repair work on the school boilers necessitated closing the school for a week. Short-lived, however, was our joy when we learned that future vacations were to be shortened to make up the time. That sanctum sanctorum known as the Tiot Room hummed with activity throughout the year, long after the building was otherwise deserted and even during vacation days as the indefatigable editors with their adviser, Mrs. Riley, planned and executed layouts to make our 1949 Tiot a thing of beauty and a joy forever. December brought rehearsals for our Senior Play The Fighting Littles, an hilarious comedy, well suited to the histrionic abilities of the cast. It proved to be one of the high spots of the year. The joint efforts of the Student Council and the Senior Class resulted in another winter social event — the Snow-Ball — the feature of which was the choice of Al Butters and Shirley Eklund as king and queen of Norwood High. About this time, too, Miss Jane O ' Sul- livan, our pretty and popular school nurse, resigned to be married, and her duties were taken over by Miss Margaret Ryan. And as another year draws to a close, in retrospect we see how greatly we are indebted to our principal, Mr. Hayden, to our chief class advisers, Miss Gow, Mr. Gormley, and Mr. Learnard, and to Mrs. Riley, who worked un- tiringly to make our Yearbook an outstanding one, and to all our teachers for the part they played in shaping the success of our three happy years at Norwood High. To them goes our sincere and profound appreciation with the assurance that through their help and guidance we, the 49 ' ers, have found the gold we sought in that thar Hill. M. H. The thought of graduation was to keep us going at full speed. Instead of our traditional Welcome Tea, we held our annual school picnic for our sisters and brothers (three of the latter, believe it or not). After this we settled down and worked hard at learning our trades. The Hallowe ' en Party, and the White Elephant Auction afforded a bright moment in an otherwise strict routine. Then — happy catastrophe! The boilers broke down and we had six days in which to rest up for our Thanksgiving dinner. We tackled our next job with the en- thusiasm that only Peabody students know. It was our Christmas Sale, and everyone had a chance to display her talents at handicraft, sewing, and cooking. The annual Christmas Pageant and Party followed to complete the holiday season. After another period of deep application, we found ourselves preparing for the Valentine Formal. Then March was here with Parents ' Night and our amusing one-act play, The Goose Hangs High. It was with pride that we displayed our school accomplishments to our parents. The end of our journey approached, but not before our Step Party and Class Day exer- cises were held. Our year had gone by and it was with mingled feelings of anticipation and regret that we saw June 14 roll around. We had fun while we worked, but this era in our lives was ended and we faced life ' s next adventure with courage and confidence. I.J., A. D., A. T. â– . â– ' Pcrbodu PROiri BUSINESS DEPARTMENT The Business Department of the School continues to provide voca- tionally trained and skilled girls for selective employers. Graduates from this department have developed, to a high degree, poise and confidence which are so essential to the high school graduate entering the field of business for the first time. ART DEPARTMENT The latest innovation in the Art Department is instruction in the art of weaving. Weaving is a fascinat- ing and interesting project which the girls enjoy. Many different patterns are woven into designs which make the material attractive and original. TEA ROOM The Tea Room affords the student practice in the preparation of foods, stressing high standards and efficient service. BEAUTY CULTURE DEPARTMENT Beauty Culture has become a major profession in the world today. The cosmetician becomes well skilled in her trade at the Henry O. Peabody School and is able to maintain a high standard in this field. DRESSMAKING DEPARTMENT Dressmaking is a trade which possesses many advantages. The tailored coats which the girls have de- signed and made are a few of the many beautiful things that can be created and accomplished. BAKERY DEPARTMENT The Bakery Department pre- pares the student for all types of bakery work, mixing, baking and decorating, and in all of the duties of a pastry cook either for an institution or a tea room. UNDER G R ADS Q n JUNIOR OFFICERS Seated: Maroney, Falconer, Donahue Standing: Piraino, Stepanovitch, Sparrow HflLf-Ulfty HOUSE With our initial struggle over we found ourselves midway in our endeavor toward graduation. We immediately put our best foot forward and with far more confidence in ourselves than in our baby year we tried our best to attain that height of perfection that we so sadly lacked in the preceding year. We were now the in-betweeners. Soon, after we had accustomed ourselves to the steady grind once more, the task of electing our officers came around. After a great deal of discussing and campaigning they were duly elected as follows: Margaret Falconer, president; Dorothy Stepanovitch, secretary; Patricia Maroney, girls ' treasurer; Paul Piraino, boys ' treasurer; Patricia Donahue, girls ' A. A.; Joseph Sparrow, boys ' A. A. Deeply saddened by the death of Miss Nicholson, our sophomore class adviser, we appointed a committee to draw plans for a memorial. This committee suggested starting a library of educational films for the English Department and this plan was unanimously ap- proved by the class. Before we realized it, the Junior Prom, the greatest event in the social season of our class, came around. After much discussion concerning decorations, orchestra, tickets, etc., the big night came and went with a bang. And now, as our Junior year is coming to an end we look forward with great anticipa- tion to the day when we will no longer be the in-betweeners but at last will hold the coveted place in assembly of the MIGHTY SENIORS. The transition was complete — pigtails to balle- rinas, shott pants to fuzzy cheeks, big wheels at last! Never once during the year, however, have we been allowed to forget that we are only sophomores. After a few weeks of mad scurrying and getting acquainted, we elected our class officers as follows: William Lynch, president; Walter Peckham, vice-president; Beverly Tomm, secretaty; Palma Bilotta, girls ' treasurer; Edward McGowan, boys ' treasurer; Ann Priday, girls ' A. A.; Donald Glaser, boys ' A. A. Our sophomore class party was very well attended and we were pleased to see so many of our upper classmen there. The whole affair was very enjoyable and successful. For our sophomore assembly at Christmas we launched the first stage production held in many a moon at N. H. S. This was a series of five tableaux depicting the Nativity scene. Mr. Lugton and his crew with great ingenuity and much hard work improvised a stage. Mr. Flaherty and Miss Coughlin felt that our production more than justified their hours of labor. All in all our members have contributed much in the line of sports and intra-mural activity to an extent that is gratifying to all of us, and we hope that at the end of the year as we become juniors (more hoping), it may be said of us, Well done, fifty-one! It is a growing organization and is continuing to broaden its scope of activities. This year we have made an increased effort to have the entire student body feel that they are a part of the Council and that our main purpose is to serve them. The Football Dance this year was the largest one ever held in the history of N. H. S. The profits of our Snow-Ball Dance were shared with the Senior Class. On May 28th the Council sponsored the annual Norwood High Night at Pops. Our community spirit was demonstrated by a donation to the Community Fund Drive, and the sending of Care Packages to Europe. It was requested that the Student Council assume the responsibility of distributing the individual school pictures. The profit from this activity was turned over to the Assembly Fund. George Kelter was appointed Chairman of the Assembly Committee and was assisted by Catherine Francesco, Betty Glynn, Bateman Irving, Earle Legge, Betty Mahoney, Janet Murphy and Eleanor Navickas. This group has done a fine piece of work in providing and arranging an excellent Assembly Program. In addition to conducting the Assembly Drive for Funds they have gained some fine publicity for the school by broadcasting over Station WHDH. The bronze memorial plaque which was the gift of the 1948 Council has been com- pleted and it is to be officially dedicated at our Memorial Day Exercises. Margaret Williamson and her committee are planning to revise our School Handbook. It is hoped that the Council will present each entering student with a copy of one next September. The Council has also considered the improvement of our School Library. Charles Fisher and his committee, Gerry Hale and Donald Glaser, are making plans to increase the volume of books and make other needed improvements, so that our school library may rank among the best in the state. The Home Room Representatives deserve much credit for their splendid co-operation in all Student Council activities. Under the able leadership of our Faculty Adviser, Miss Hubbard, we have shown what a progressive Student Council can accomplish. Let ' s hope that its good work will continue throughout the coming years. J. C. After having been duly elected by popular vote and approved by the faculty, the traffic officers proudly assumed the task of guiding the undergrads plus those Seniors who, de- spite their two years at Norwood High, were still unable to find their way around. We were no different than our predecessors. Although at first traffic was just an excuse to get out of class early and to enter late, it did not take us long to realize that it was an honor and a responsibility which required dignity and respect. By practicing as well as preaching the Golden Rule, the Traffic Squad has successfully performed its duties. 07} £ l £ c t i on commission Left to right: Sundquist, Voce, O ' Toole, Weisul, Lynch, Carlson, Welles D €B flTIHG CLUB Front Row: Hall, Lynch, Burke, Davis, Folan, Hyland, Cieri, Sullivan Second Row: Mr. Butler, Craddock, Cloherty, Bitar, Nichols, Cofsky, Atkins, Glynn, Feaver, Allen Third Row: Assim, Tobin, Weisul, Bergman, Chubet, Lamminen {78 PfiOJfCTIOfl CLUB Left to right: White, Garner, Kijanowski, Sundquist, Sandblom TICKET S€L LERS Front Row: Tomm, Bowles, Burke, Murphy, Hefferan, Hale, Weisul, Welch, Elias, Bilotta Second Row: Mr. Gormley, Glynn, Walsh, Vescio, Rizzo, Balfour, Coughlin, Keady, Eckhart, Michienzi, Natoli, Pieczonka, Bartucca, Sullivan Third Row: McGuff, Johnson, Ippoliti, Taylor, Sadoskis, Petrovski, Navickas, Johnson, Hood, Sullivan, Bouchard, Anderson I Sept. 18 — Norwood gains 6-6 Needham tie with rally. ART GULLA PICKED FOR Fred Foye, Boston Traveler ace sports writer, asked high school coaches all over the state who was the best back among the schoolboy ranks that they had seen in action this past football season. No less than seven coaches answered rhat question by naming Art Gulla as the best they had seen, and no less than sixteen others, when asked the same question, named Gulla as being one of the best. Gulla, who is seventeen years old, weighs one hundred and sixty pounds and is five feet, eight inches tall, loves to play football and has the ability to make a name for himself in the fast company in which he will find himself in college football ranks. The five starters were Art Gulla and Johnny Poce at the forward positions, Win Cush- man and Pete Lasinskas at the guard spots, and Art Turner at center. The season started in grand style as the team won the first six games, including a non- league contest with Northbridge. But from there on in the wins were slower and harder coming as the following tabulation all too clearly shows: Norwood 54 — Northbridge 44 Norwood 45 — Natick 38 Norwood 48 — Needham 39 Norwood 51 — Framingham 32 Norwood 49 — Wellesley 46 Norwood 58— Walpole 32 Norwood 31 — Dedham 46 Norwood 34 — Milton 64 Norwood 46 — Framingham 34 Norwood 39 — Needham 45 Norwood 44 — Wellesley 67 Norwood 45 — Walpole 29 Norwood 40 — Milton 57 Norwood 48 — Dedham 34 The big point-getter for the Blue and White was our aggressive forward, Art Gulla, who threw in 222 points during the season. A post-season addition in our league this year was the first annual All-Star Game. Art Gulla, Pete Lasinkas, Johnny Poce and Art Turner were selected to represent Norwood in the contest. A. For the first time in four years hockey became a major sport, thanks to the backing of Mr. Scafati and Mr. Hayden, both ardent fans. Our biggest break came with the appoint- ment of Mr. William Hagblom as hockey coach. We were one of the best coached teams in the league as shown by our spirit and style of play. The starting forwards were Bo Fisher, Joe McCue, and Co-Captain Art Vietze, with Co-Captain Bob Flaherty and Ray Amirault on defense. Deacon Lynch tended the nets with amazing steadiness. The second aggregation also played an important role in our games — Dave Burke, Russ Pothier, and Don Glaser in the line, Bob Ivatts and Earle Legge on defense. Norwood opened the season by defeating favored Framingham 2 to 0. Bo Fisher scored two goals. The next two games with Watertown and Wellesley were exciting contests with the Norwood team suffering its only two losses of the regular season. Norwood came fighting back to tie Needham 1 to 1 and then upset Walpole for the first time in Norwood ' s hockey history, 2 to 0. Art Vietze scored both goals. The last two games of the regular season ended in tie scores with Boston College High and Waltham. This completed the regular season and we found ourselves tied with Needham for a first division berth. In an extra game play-off we lost 3 to 1. In the second division play-offs we met Waltham, to 0; Boston College High, 3 to 2; and Watertown, 2 to 2. Thus closed one of the most successful seasons a Norwood hockey team has ever had. As a result of excellent coaching, four of our boys, Art Vietze, Joe McCue, Bo Fisher, and Bob Flaherty made the all-star team, and to show our appreciation for Mr. Hag- blom ' s services, the team presented him with a pen and pencil set before the final game. We, therefore, leave the following articles to those poor unfor- tunate groups of individuals who are chosen as the ill-fated recipients of our bequests. But once attained, it loses its meaning un- less new objectives are set up and a new climb begun. Your graduation is a currently satisfying experience, but soon you ' ll become restless for new challenges ahead. Achievement is good only when it stimulates further initiative.
