John DormeIs eight- eenth century philosophy can he applied to our school activities. We, the students and faculty, functioning as unique indi- viduals, frequently forget to realize that we are a continent, a part of the main of Norwood High School. Do you remember . walking together in the halls, laugh- ing, discussing our classes, waiting in the lunch line, or yelling for the boys to win the game for their A lma Mater? Do you remember . . . teachers being people planning tests, guiding students in clubs, or pushing their cars out of the congested labyrinth loosely termed a parking lot? H'No man is an is land. ;, In1965- 1966 we worked together as a body. We were proud of our tradition and expectant of our future, for we were vitally involved with each other. What at it? Can you get me? active With jobs, studies, sports, honors for Alma Mater Pst! What did you get for problem five? An in-depth study of the anatomy of underclassmen revealed aspects of thought processes and physique. Freshmen were found to have broken bones from being trampled tn the halls, strained muscles from freshman sports and GAAH and red faces acquired by trips to the wrong gym. A sophomores brain contained miscel- laneous postulates and theorems, fragments of crepe from the Sophomore Dance, and concussions caused by misguided shots of the reserve basketball team. Among the unusual objects identified as part of a juntorls anatomy were a corsage pin from the Junior Prom, 51 well-chewed pencil from the PSAT, and several unused postcards from the Washington trip. Science now has a better understanding of these three tadpolehke stages in the development of mature, confident seniors. ATHLETICS .wx'r r, . - .' . I, How One: S. Taylor, M. Mundy, G. Parks, D. The winning season of the 1965 varsity Indians can be attributed to the capable leadership of CO-Captains Randy Reese and Jerry Borin, and the unity of the squad. From the ten games that were played, the teem won five, lost four, and tied one game with Mt. Healthy, a game which kept the Mt. Healthy squad from achiev- ing a first place position in the league. The last game of the season, Norwood vs. Ftnheytown, was played in the rain, but the Indians showed their spirit by being victorious, though mud-soaked, in a 14-0 score. In the locker room, however, the team was not so serious as on the field for this year, the squad held church serv- icesw with Reverend William Boqgess presiding. improvement was a. key word this year and, conse quently, movies were taken at the games to give the team a chance to see their mistakes and the mistakes of their oppoeition, Colleges also received these movies, which helped them choose those boys deserving scholarships. William Hotfeid, head coach, stated that the most ime portant teeter contributing to this year's success was togetherness. The Indians proved their togetherness by their victories and proved their appreciation of a great coach by presenting 1 r. BASKETBALL The 1965-1966 varsity basketball team, although end- ing the season with a record of five Wins and thirteen losses and a league record of four wins and seven losses, exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and im- measurable improvement. Battling a heighth weakness in the center and forward positions was one important negative factor contributing to the outcome of the sea- son. Thus, team assets had to stem from the qualities of urgent hustle and ardent desire. Builders of high scoring columns were Mike Calhoun, averaging 14.9 points, Allen Hill, averaging 11.4 points, and Doug Eustice, averaging 10.9 points. Starters Mike Calhoun, Paul Neppes, Allen Hill, Pat Hines, and Doug Eustice were frequently assisted by henchmen. Joe Morgenroth and lack Bouldin, while relying upon Mike McLain. Gary Tedford, Jim Coy, Dale Heineman, and Ierry Lancaster as relief men. Since four of the eight juniors earned varsity basket- ball letters and the reserve team proved its outstanding ability by winning the Hamilton County Suburban LeagueEastern Division championship, Coach Gardner feels that, with a little more team height, 1966-1967 can be a rewarding year for the varsity squad. Mr. Thomas Cahill, teacher of the theory of newspaper publication to juniors in Iournalism I, chooses the most outstanding students for the honor of becoming staff members for the next year. In each of the twenty-five issues of the Mirror. articles are in- cluded concerning all facets of school life, and vibrant editorials spark pensive minds to consider issues ex- tending beyond the walls of N.H.S. Mirror subscribers have made a wise investment in a paper that is able to meet the high standards set year after year. 78 mm, :4 l - t' w News Bureau; F. McCarthy,- kneeling, L. Hm. N. Endless hours Of work confront Senior Editors, who have to organize each section of the book to comply with the underlying theme. Junior members of the staff, besides publishing the Tele-Talkl submit articles which, after careful re- vision, become major portions of the literary aspect of the SILHOUBTTE. However, the planning and molding of the structure of the book began long before September. Meetings were held in the summer where the staff suggested, discussed, and decided What would be done the fol- lowing year. Miss Smith, adviser, guided the staff from making serious mistakes during the first stages of the book', and during the year Mr. Kaschak supervised the businese end of the publication of the yearbook. Only because of the teamwork of the 1966 SILHOUETTE staff could the finished product hit the presses. Row One: M. Nunn, Club Editor; K, Hayes, CwFacully and Senior Portrait Edttor. Row Two: 1'. This illustrious Class, led by their fearless REL. tPresident tor Litel Randy Reese, is made up of students With individual talents and abilities that com- bine to produce an outstanding unit' excelling in scholarship, athletics, and the humanities. Seniors know that brain work is lubricated by elbow grease and concentration. Underclassmen sat up and took notice at the National Honor Society assembly when six senior homerooms were credited with the highest semester grade point average in the school. Forty-eight members of the class of '66 have been inducted into National Honor Society. The first winning football season in five years is a real trophy for the varsity squad of '66. Seniors also initiated the first successful senior section for special occasions at athletic events Senior members of the wrestling team made a fine performance, and two senior SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: I, Hood, Secretary; R. Reese, President; 5. Watson, Vice President; R. Smith, Treasurer. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1966 NZ cross country runners were consistently in the top thirty runners of Hamilton County competition. rl'he sensational sixtytsixers were the first group ever to have a special class to study the humanities compre- hensively. In drama, seniors evinced remarkable ability in the hilarious production You Can't Take It With You and dominated the cast of Brigadoon. Seniors contribute ed their melodic do, re, mi, to choir, glee club, en- semble, band, orchestra, piano playing, the girls' trio, the junior-senior talent show, and other musical groups. Artists. photographers, and writers of the senior class have given the Mirror. the SILHOUETTE. and The Look' ing Glass a special sparkle, creativity, and quality. The truly unifying factor in the Class of '66 is its ability to work like a machine, with each part function- ing in its place, to create a product of excellence. Underclassmen will please note this example as a pattern for successive classes. 66 motto-The Best Things Come in Small Packages.
