Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1965 volume:

W0 roads diverged in a yellow woodq And sorry I could not travel both And he one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; T hough as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step-had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! H Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come hack. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and l- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. SILHOUETTE In a Hurry 0i red-inked copy and grease-marked pictures the 1965 SILHOUETTE left room 10415 in mid-March. The finished product of chaotic photo days, hurried copy, and top secret plans is now open to inspection, praise, and criticism. Having squeezed out an extra dollar from the student body, the staff hopes the subscribers are satisfled with the return On their investment. The black and white printing and engraving is accented by the full page color picture, a major item in the budget. In an effort to raise the quality of the SILHOUETTE, the size was increased to that common to other high schools. Traditions were made and broken as the staff substituted 3 faculty selection of Most Outstanding Seniors for the classas choice of Senior Superlatives, Through the institution of directories for the faculty and the Class of 1965, these sections were covered more fully. Both Miss Shirley Smith, publications advisor, and George Kaschak, business adviser, allowed the staff much free rein in preparing and editing the annual. Student effort created the 1965 SILHOUETTE to preserve student memories. Left to Right: E. Burks, Index Editor: A. Gray, Club Editor; J, Hamilton, Sports Edi- tor. Rh Chambers, Co-Edimr in Chief; B. The responsibility of the Mirror staff, composed of twenty members advised hy Thomas Cahill, is to publish twenty-flve issues, including two eight-page editions at Christmas and graduation. Work on the Mirror begins in the summer when the new staff meets to plan its first disorganized issue. After a few experimental editions the new staff becomes the veteran staff which produces the firstvclass paper that Norwood High School deserves. Although not so much in the public eye as the editorial staff, the Ml'fi'OTSS business staff is a very important part of the school paper organization. It is responsible for the writ' ing and soliciting of ads which, along with the proceeds from a dance in the fall and the annual Ice Cream Social, finance the Mirror. Smnding: M. Pierre, a cat, and his mouse wife reside with their Mats and Kice 0n the fourth floor of N.H.S. Whenever a door opens by itself7 Pierre or Gertrude is paying an invisible visit. Money saved by the hard-working French Club members supports one unfortunate seven-year-old girl in Boulogne and an Algerian refugeek family of four in the south of France: Profits from the sale of schoot stationery and the Mardi Gras Dance are spent to benefit these charges: never French Club. LATIN CLUBS A comprehensive study of Latin declensions, conjugations, grammar, plus a study of Roman civilization, confronts the first-year Latin student. The second year brings an awareness of Roman history and cultural heritage through the reading of Commentaries on the Gallic Wars by Julius Caesar and various ancient myths and fablesV A dance, the :zlndian Stomp:D and plans for a banquet for Latin students and alumni have highlighted the activity of the 1965 Norwood Romans. HENRY NEWBOLT FOOTBALL Co-Captains Mike Mastin and Bill Schlie led the hard-hit- ting tribe through a season sparked by two victories. Despite a driving rain storm the tribe scalped Deer Park 16 to 12 in the second game of the year. A team effort char- acterized the Indians? destruction of Harrison by a score of 36 to 0 Norwood contested each of the eight games which were lost; however, a failure to come up with crucial plays re' sulted in the defeats. The season finale saw 17 seniors play their last high school game. A spirited icletis try harder,, attitude was evidenced by I1964- gridiron Indians. The team, although it compiled a dis- mal record, always made a determined effort to win. Post-season recognition came to several of the Indian war- riors. And deservedly so, think the seniors. Reflecting this class arrogance is the go-getiveness that has pervaded all its ac- tivities. A smashing shamrock sale paved the way for their profitable HMoonlight and Rose? Junior Prom. As juniors, they dragged the senior class of 1964- through the mud in a tug-o-war. Turning up everywhere, seniors sparked somewhat lifeless organizations. Seniors provided Norwood with a first-Class Mirror, and a larger SILHOUETTE. Growing up with the musicals, this yearas seniors have provided the leads for all three productions. As varsity mainstays, the Class of 1965 led the charging Indians. Senior girls scored high in table decor- ations produced by all-night kleenex pufhng bees. Co-ops in 321 contributed the Schools highest grade average. Perhaps the class was tops because of its leaders, probably because their followers were also leaders. But from this impressive class the four officers above were elected after hectic hut uproarious campaigns, 3 first for Norwood class elections. The senior class of 1965, produced by the post war boom of 1946 and 194-7, added over 330 names to the rolls of Norwood alumni. Any member of this class who has proudly displayed the 1965 on his ring or the numerals On his shoulder can stand up and be counted as a member of the largest class ever to walk out of the commencement ceremonies of Norwood High SchooL 101 ALBERT SCOTT ADAMSON,JR. But the 1965 SILHOUETTE staff decided to honor instead those seniors who have accomplished much by using their own talents and skills. Not many students use all of their ability, though many try. These pages recognize six seniors, chosen. by a faculty committee, who have given their all to better themselves, their class, their school, and their community. CHRIS SHERMAN TOM SCOTT BETH ZIMMERMAN 131 SENIOR CLASS PLAY After six weeks of strenuous rehearsing the cast of the Senior Class Play should have felt confident on the big night. They werenjt. Would the audience appreciate their efforts, or would their eHorts be worth appreciating? The players, fears, though natural, proved unfounded. The audience went wild. ,e E The huntress. The critique. Powerful emotions. I32 Physchomotor drama. A tired but satisfied cast and crew. SIX STITCHES FOR EGO I33 Three seniors9 time, talent enrich Norwood. Several members of the Class of 1965 have contributed greatly to various aspects of student life. Because their talents have brought honor to the school, they are recog- nized here. Some of Pat Lynch's achievements at the easel received three of the five regional Hallmark Awards pre- sented for the best art work in various helds. Who in Not- wood High School has not thrilled to hear Cindy Costello perform at the piano? Without Betty Merandafs leadership qualities many successful school events such as the Junior Senior Talent Show of 1965, Oklahoma.', and Six Stitches for Ego might have Houndered.
