At first nothing seemed changed. The dress was a little ditierenty the girls wore an occasional jerkin and open shirt collar above their pastel sweaters, remaining true to the Norwood Fashion of the Hour Ca perenniall. Our Men About 2 the Corridors broke out in a bright rash ot plaid shirts. Girls copied mocassins of their boy friends, but not the yellow leath- er clodhoppers. The summer clean-up partly cancelled our September de- pression at thoughts of the 7:00 alarm, work, seventh bell, book reports, and tour walls. New paint brightened the classrooms. glllwueffe IQLH 726iwOO9, Ohio, Koa Even the teachers looked heal threr And there were some new ones Two teachers were added to the cooperattve stat-f, a new de partment begun thls year Twen ty two students enrolled for corn mercral educatton on the coop erattve basls, and twenty one 1n the ollstrlbutlve trades All at tended classes ln the mornlng and worked ln the afternoon not more than ttfteen hours a week recelvtng the mtnrmum rate of pay Some served as se retartes ttle clerks consptometer opera tors bookkeepers and general OHICQ workers Qthers served ln retall stores as sal s clerks wrap BOARD OF EDUCATION 'L 06 Education . . . pers stock boys, and cashlers Mlss Kehm headed the GL11d ance and Placement Bureau Thts bureau helps frt Norwood young people from l8 to 25 1nto lndustry Thls lS a valuable ex perlence for students ln learnmg to adtust to the demands of mod ern bustness A complete mtellr gence and achlevement testmg program wtth emphas1s on grad uattng sentors IS part of he work ot thts bureau The College Club for undergraduates 1S another proJect to acguatnt students w1th the regulrements ot varlous colleges and to plot an adequate tour year program The Adult Edu atton program M M kW d O h 1 ABSENT FROM PICTURE N R lph Th y T gal oueffe IQLH 1 I 1 - ' . . . . Mostly they have been too busy this year to let us practice our wiles on them. This year they added Home Visitation to their regular duties. Our Home Room teachers called on our parents. 'We scrambled, while they talked about our pres- ent school program and future plans. This project to bring parents a better knowledge and under- standing of current public edu- cation problems in Norwood was approved by Superintendent H. S. Bates and the Board of Edu- cation. Qur faculty also carried out a self-evaluation program throughout the year, similar to the Qhio Education Association plan for the rating of secondary schools. l94l also ended the four-year increment period for the faculty. minisffzafi n 'L Jmmastfzafofzs HAIOID S BATF5 1 111 S 10111 lx A 'W e read and hear much about Total Defense The march of events leads us to think of this expression in terms of preserv ing our form of government against invading ldealogies The indivldual needs to think of to tal defense in the light of him self to set goals of self reallza tion securing the arts of conver sation healthful living enioying life giving responsible directlon to his own securing some mea sure of economic SHI iency through learmng the values of hone t endeavor Finally he must strive to become a good citizen in its broadest meaning Total Defense for the 1nd1v1d ual obviously becomes oar best defense for national life Harold S Bans 6 If M HANN4 nc'1I L M15 We still live in a democracy We still enioy the blessings of our democratic life Our Amen can educational system was built for democracy and has be come 1ts chief servant lf we be lieve that tne success of our present mode of life depends up on a continuance of an educa tronal system which means tree dom of opportunity for all then we must lend our whole hearted support to enlarging and strengthening the p r o g r a m Young men and young Women in our schools parents teachers should ever seek to preserve for hildren of th e future those democratic principles Whlch meant so much to the founders of our educational system H Ill Hun nu 0 Cl ' ' , NX ' I , f, ,f . . Twelve Lower students were elected to membership, forming the first active Norwood chapter. The group aims to promote projects in the school upholding the four cardinal principals of the society, leadership, character, service, and scholarship, such as award- ing of banners to ninth grade homerooms with the highest scholarship average. Members are selected by the faculty from the upper fifteen 18 oburri , I, O'Eriou, I. Frankcnbergcr, P. Gaible, S.
